Coronavirus: German study shows COVID-19 might not be fatal as previously thought

- Professor Hendrick Streeck, University of Bonn director of the Institute of Virology and Institute for HIV Research, joins 'Closing Bell' to discuss the university's antibody study and what it means for the coronavirus pandemic.
The world is reeling from the coronavirus pandemic, and some countries are reeling more than others.
But Germany seems to be taking the epidemic in its stride with a high number of cases but a low number of deaths, thanks to a number of factors.
In Europe, while Italy and Spain are the worst hit countries with over 100,000 cases each, as of Friday, Germany has recorded 84,794 confirmed cases but has witnessed just 1,107 deaths, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.
The low mortality rate in Germany, at just over 1%, is far below its neighboring European countries, and this has been put down to Germany’s decision to implement widespread testing of people suspected of having the virus, as opposed to Italy or the U.K.’s decision to only test symptomatic cases.
Karl Lauterbach, a professor of health economics and epidemiology at the University of Cologne, and a politician in the Social Democratic Party (SPD) of Germany, told CNBC that Germany’s less severe experience of the pandemic so far was down to a handful of factors.
“I think so far we’ve been lucky because we were hit by the wave of new infections later than many other European countries, for example Italy, Spain and France,” he told CNBC Thursday.

Well... I wouldn't recomment to trust any country. Scientific data shows that antibody tests react to immunity for other coronaviruses (the lovely flu is one of them). So their data is not consistent, because there is no a precise covid-19 antibody test available yet.

Remember Germany has less obesity than the US...and they have a great healthcare system, so of course it won't be as devastating.
I was in Germany in 2008-9 and they have a very moderate body fat -low teens and very consistent. The US has far more obese and severely obese people -so many more that I would bet that the US will have double to triple the mortality of young 20-50yrs olds.
Also, Germany reacted as soon as they got the information.
Also the super spreader events were groups of really fit young skiers. That brought fatality rate down. In the end worldwide the fatality rate will be .6% which is enough to overwhelm the healthcare system.

Gates never claimed to be a specialist. He certainly became an expert, as his philantrophic work allowed him to gather a lot of information on the subject, but his expertise is limited to listening to actual specialists and their evaluations.
So far nobody who claimed that Gates is somehow making money with diseases was able to point out where in the process money could be made, as Gates delivers vaccines to regions which are abandonned by the health industry due to their lack of funds. Not sure where you think he could magic up some money in that equation. But then again, I doubt you ever looked far enough into the issue to even wonder about that. Germany has high infection rate but they did a great job in control of fatality.
I live in one of the biggest cities of Germany (Hamburg) and for the past week and a half, there were remarkably few infections in Hamburg, only between 20 and 50 infections a day, which compared to the weeks before is ABSOLUTELY amazing. A couple of weeks ago, there were over 200 cases reported on the daily. Unfortunately, the government did loosen the restrictions slightly, which is why shops started opening again on Monday the 20th of April. Due to that, we will probably be seeing higher infection rates in Hamburg soon, because the people are now allowed to go into the shops again. But its still impressing that the reproduction rate in Hamburg recently was at 0,5 considering the fact that you might be able to make the virus extinct as soon as the reproduction rate is at 0,225.
They didn't really control fatality in the way I think you mean it. They just tested more, found out that more people had been exposed and self-resolved without needing hospitalization or succumbing. Therefore, the number of fatalities, compared to the actual number of people who contracted the virus, appears smaller.
For a simplified example, say 100 people initially are confirmed to have the virus, and 3 of them die. That's a 3% case fatality rate (CFR). But if you then do more testing, of the general population outside a hospital setting, and find there are actually 900 more people with antibodies (thus had the virus and recovered), then the CFR drops to 3 out of 1000, or 0.3%. This is typically what is seen once a pandemic subsides, and you are able to go back and determine the real numbers; the case fatality rate is always less than originally thought. Still represents way too many people.

Fatality rates calculated with known infections are meaningless if you have insufficient testing sample sizes.
What happens in Germany does not necessary go up for other countries. Germany did an excellent job in containing the virus. The kind off population and society is also an factor. In Italy it is normal to live with your parents and grandparents. There are way more older people as well then in Germany.
The death rate is much much higher then in Germany. The same goes for Spain. Health is also an factor. In the US on the moment children have a lower life expectancy then their parents. There are way more overweighted and obese people then in other countries. Their diet is bad and unhealthy.
There are also a lot off people with diabetes type 2. Even young children have it. The changes are big that a lot more people die from it then in Germany.
So there are a lot off factors that play a role. Germany is not a blue print for other countries but it is promising.

Obviously you consume media that doesn't air the daily reports. If you did watch the daily reports for yourself instead of letting others filter it for you, you would see that most of the time at the briefings is spent with the physicians and other experts from the task force speaking on the progress.

but as a journalist, I will tell you that the Gates Foundation is on the front lines around the world and was for HIV and SARS among others--and they have been for more than a decade. 1) 15% in the best infected region of Germany. Many hoped or indicated (e..g Oxford Univ. Study) that already 2/3 of populations infected and immune.

Still can be dangerous but most virologists have put Covid19 death rate near 2% which is six times higher. Remember this German study found that 14% of cases had antibodies that were not symptomatic.

As far as I've read, A & B are parent genetic sequences and C the daughter type and it keeps going on.
From sequencing the scientists can speculate how many positive cases identification have miss missed in contact tracing.
It also sheds light on the origins of the virus & possible modifications.
At least 7600 from people that were initially discovered positive in Wuhan belonged to group C.
Some interpret that as the virus may not have naturally initiated there and brought in by foreigners from groups A and B which have individuals from both USA & Australia among them.
Others interpret this as lab leaks or modifications of earlier grouped virus in an attempt to invent an HIV vaccine.
The data processing is raw but published awaiting peer review studies.
It's too early to tell but overall indicates the time of origin around Sept or earlier.

But you cannot compare this death rate with those of other countries. Death rate increases immensely when the health system is overwhelmed. I work on ICU in Germany, and we had critically ill CoVid patients. But because we had so much time (no regular surgery, ICU ward is half empty) we had plenty of time to care for these patients. This just doesn‘t happen if you don‘t have the resources.
Corona death rate is not so much about the virus, but about the health system.

Ok the fatality rate is very relevant. It's a marker of disease severity. Yes we ultimately care out healthcare systems ability to manage the the number of severe patients but a disease with a higher mortality rate is more likely to produce severe symptoms and land someone in a hospital. I'm not saying it's more important than incidince rate but it is still an import part of the discussion.
This is important to know how close we are to herd immunity. If close, then hospitals will not be overwhelmed

I wonder if the impact of the virus depends very much on the general overall fitness of the society, and environmental factors. The US for example seems to be experiencing somewhat higher mortality rates than other countries and they also have very high rates of obesity, hypertension, and diabetes. Further to this point millions of Americans don’t have access to adequate healthcare. The analysis of the data once this is over will be very interesting and telling.

They suspect the number of cases is much higher than has been reported because there is an unidentified population that has actually HAD Covid-19 and survived without medical intervention, which means the actual fatality rate is lower than previously thought. That doesn't mean return to work because we don't have 3 things we need: testing to determine immunity, a vaccine to help reduce severity, and any kind of effective treatment for those who are hit hard. We still can overwhelm our healthcare system and risk killing more people than we need to.
It means, if you multipliy deaths by 100...divided by 0.37...you get an estimate for the real number of infected.

A lot of the other leading virologists in Germany have criticized this study, including Christian Dorsten, who is the leading virologists on coronaviruses (in Germany at least). Questions where raised about his methodology and it remains to be seen if this study holds up after it has been peer-reviewed. But even if it does hold up we should keep in mind that this study is a case study for Heinsberg not representative for the rest of Germany let alone other parts of the world.

I like Drosten and have seen all his podcasts... but at the end hes also just a human being with thoughts and opinions and like every human being you can be wrong with smth. Thats not even a bad thing! I am glad to have him around but I am also glad hes not the only expert having around! Its the collectiv I am glad about to have and I can count on when it comes to things like that. And those people are btw the only people I trust on this, because they do this their whole life!
The important part is the ability of our healthcare systems to handle the mass casualties and as much testing as possible for antibodies. Having accurate data will help us make important decisions or at least condoning or rejecting those we're presented with.

In general I think Prof Streeck was providing good reasoning for the low mortality rate because they found through their antibody tests that there were an awful lot of infected people who didn't even know it because they didn't have any symptoms. Now more antibody testing needs to be done because this can focus in on hot spots and verify this study.
...there can't be a contradicting study, because this is just the first study. They were VERY clear about the fact that you can't jut take the number and assume that this is the lethality rate in the whole world...there are a lot of factors which play into it. The hygiene standards, how successful you managed to isolate the vulnerable (in Heinsberg extremely successful), density of population (we are talking about a rural area here). Basically this is most likely the best case scenario WITH a lot of distancing and hygiene in place.
