We are terrible at listening to warnings about disaster.” In this powerful and prescient talk, Helena’s Sam Feinburg speaks to the threat of a catastrophic blackout, what each of us can do to protect our grid, and the quirk in the human mind that makes problems of this ilk - like pandemics or nuclear proliferation - so desperately hard to solve.
Sam is the Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer of Helena, a problem-solving institution that addresses urgent societal issues through for-profit, non-profit, and legislative action.
Helena's first project, "Factory in the Sky,” supported the construction of the first commercial carbon capture factory by the Swiss company Climeworks, which is now operating in 15 countries globally. Its second project, "Shield", catalyzed state and federal action to help protect the North American electrical grid from threats due to solar storms and cyber-attack, including a 2019 Presidential Executive Order. Its third, 'America in One Room', organized one of the largest political experiments in U.S. history in an effort to improve the way citizens evaluate candidates for public office, featured on the front page of the New York Times, and was hailed by US President Barack Obama.
Helena operates its projects with a small group of leaders it calls "Helena Members". They include Nobel Laureates, Academy Award winners, former CIA Directors, Olympic athletes, NGO leaders, technology entrepreneurs, explorers and more.
Outside of Helena, Sam serves as Social Entrepreneur in Residence at The Boston Consulting Group. In 2014, Sam won the World Schools Debating Championships as a member of the England Debate Team.

I grew up in rural GA on a farm. Did not have electricity as a child. Grew most of our own food and raised animals. Had Kerosene lamps, an outhouse, and used wood for fire. It was a beautiful existence. I just did not know it at the time.
We had power but the rest is the same. Also had a petrol pump to get the watr up from the river. Everything we ate was organic.From the milk to the lettuce. 🥰😋

Unfortunately most people do not have the resources or the skills to live off the grid the way our grandparents or great grandparents did. Preppers may survive the longest but I doubt it would be a beautiful experience given how much they would have lost.
Revisiting this essential TED talk and it's been almost a year since the February Texas grid failure. The event caused over 700 deaths and many many people were without water, heat and food for a week. BE PREPARED my fellow citizens.
I have a water source, a food source, and enough solar to get by. If I need wood for a fire the woods around me are full of it. Maybe these people learned a lesson. A portable gas heater can be purchased. Portable solar batteries and panels can too. Water comes from the tap.

Price Uhh, I'm pretty sure hospitals do need electricity to keep monitoring systems, etc running, people with pacemakers also need electricity (their blood flow is artificially kept at a constant rate via an electronic system), and all communication systems rely on electricity (without them no business would function properly and I don't need to say how important businesses are to civilization as a whole).

@@hearing4267 Hospitals have generators capable of supplying all the hospital's electrical needs. Regional blackouts are quite common so critical facilities always need backup generation. Even the communication system in the electric utility I retired from had propane generators on every important remote site.
Actually, the quote attributed to Einstein, but never found in text, was closer to: "There are two certainties in the universe. One is gravity and the other is human stupidity...and I'm not sure about gravity." However, either one works. lol

For three decades I have read and studied the potential risks and damage from a “hit” by a CME or a nuclear explosion causing a large EMP. This is the best, most informative, and level-headed presentation on EMP / fragility of our nation’s power grid that I have ever seen. Kudos! Members of Congress should be required to watch this presentation on a yearly basis.

What is "Dark Winter" and why should you care? Joe Biden did not coin the phrase, but he did reveal something very important, a clue - a secret.
"Dark Winter" is a government Bioterrorism Exercise that was held at Andrews Air Force Base on June 22-23, 2001. Dark Winter discusses a small pox pandemic that mirrors COV-19 to the tee including the following;
1.) Mass vaccination handled by the U.S. Army in the millions of doses.
2.) The strategic closure of all schools, business and non essential activities including limiting the amount of people at gatherings.

The real solution to most of these problems is decentralization.
Centralization is usually very efficient at doing or producing ONE thing, and very bad at doing everything else.
Moving to a decentralized model of energy production, storage, and distribution will increase the robustness of the system many times over, for a (relatively) small decrease in efficiency.

You cannot now divert, store or harness power from flowing water. Saving rainwater without a permit is now illegal even though the demented EPA mandates that local governments require rainwater conservation on new homes in drought areas, requiring you get a permit to harvest rainwater, now required, by paying for the required right to save rainwater for domestic use.
The Snail Darter is more important than you according to "OUR" EPA.
The Government now controls water, air and soon, sunlight.....They are not interested nor do remotely support decentralization.
And, in small capacity, we've been doing exactly that - solar energy on roofs, big-capacity batteries in basements. But it's not enough, not even close. And you know what the problem is, here - the more you decentralize, the less of a grip does the central network have. That's the point, but it also weakens and dilutes power & control - something those _in power & control today_ will absolutely work against.
This makes me think of Biden saying that we’re in for “a dark winter”.

I installed my own off grid power within months of watching this ted talk. If the system goes down I'll have more than enough power 24/7. Worse case I can boil water for cooking / washing.
If you lived in Zimbabwe you would have learned to get your power from the sun so we are ahead of the curve. Not that we have it all together but have learned to live without so many things the Western world feels are necessary every day life.

@Ava369 I disagree, we are "blessed" with unreliable supply of necessities from inept parastatal utilities. So, businesses are started to fill the gap, the power goes off all the time, so you get a gas stove and some solar panels, and a water tank for the garden. Post office doesn't function, so people start using private courier companies etc... Most Western countries have harsher climates, but yet people lived there for hundreds or thousands of years without all the modern conveniences. I don't think climate has anything to do with it, I think you just make a plan for the situation you live in.
@@RareRosebud We have rolling blackouts all the time where I live, so now we have a gas stove so we can still cook, gas heater and wood burner for when it's cold. Rechargeable battery powered lamps, a UPS for the PC and router, good old fashioned candles. A generator for when it's off for a long time, to keep the fridge and freezer going. Lots of people have solar geysers for hot water, and water tanks in the garden just for rain water harvesting. Of course many of these things only work well for short blackouts, not the prolonged scenario he's describing, and this situation didn't happen overnight, so people had time to gradually buy things, or convert existing home infrastructure.
I’m glad for everything I’ve learned from my Amish neighbors. I can feed myself and many of my neighbors from my barn long enough to bring a newly planted crop to harvest.
And I have a great collection of mantle lamps, candle making supplies, and a well in the back yard if needed.
Nothing beats knowing how to do things, real things. Without electricity. Helps to have a couple acres of trees. But in the end, knowledge is power as it always has been.

@@paulriversred738 bcoz preppers know to only talk to others preppers. If everyone knew, they'd find half their neighbours and everyone else demanding they share what they have put by, probably at gun point or other lethal threat if the shtf.
Yes preppers on you tube are constantly warning of what they expect is going to happen. They cover everything from mayhem, pandemics, droughts, natural disasters, nuclear war, government over reach and more. What I didn't hear mention was those of Christians faith who are in their own way spiritual preppers. Many read the Holy Bible and see still more than what was spoken on this vid. It's not a matter of if but when everything hits the fan.
"Prepping" is essentially a way of extending your life by a short time after most others have died. Unless you can quickly learn how to live completely like our caveman ancestors did... You'll die too, it'll just take a little longer, months most likely. Eventually, the bullets, the dried food, toilet paper, and water are gone, and then the REAL fun begins.
Jack Phillips never went to sleep that night, the night before the collision he stayed up all night trying to fix the Marconi device even though the rules said he should have waited until New York. Can you imagine what would have happened if it hadn't been working when the Titanic hit? The lifeboats would have been left adrift and only would have been found by the Oceanic 29 days later most likely with zero survivors. The Marconi operators took shifts so Phillips probably had a couple of hours of sleep that day. Now he had to take care of the hundreds of messages that had piled up over the last few hours from passengers who wanted to send messages to their loved ones. Now you have to imagine that the place he was transmitting to was 600 miles away and the ship that was transmitting to him was less than 50 miles away (Some even say 5 miles but that is still an ongoing argument whether it was the mount temple or not) So now the Sleep deprived Phillips who was catching up on all the messages he hadn't sent during the 12 hours while the machine was broken had this other operator interrupting his transmission. Phillips replied with "Shut up old man! I am working Cape Race!" When the wireless operator on the Californian heard this, he shut down for the night.
Another piece of false information is that Philips did not get one minute of sleep until he died that night, he was still transmitting messages when the ship hit the iceberg, when the captain came in and told him to send distress calls to nearby ships, he did. Then when the Captain came in and relieved him from his post, he still continued transmitting distress calls, he didn't even put his life vest on. The chief wireless operator, Harold Bride had to put it on for him, they stayed in the wireless room (which was at the top of the ship) until water was flooding it, roughly 3 minutes before the ship disappeared beneath the water surface. Harold Survived but Phillips died heroically, both of them saved each and every soul onboard. Harold later named one of his sons Jack in honor of him. i lived in a canadian community growing up in the 80/90s that regularly lost power several times each winter, for hours usually, but often as much as a week each winter with a big storm. in the ‘old’ world of that era, phones generally still worked when the power went out, most people had a woodstove to heat their home and at least boil some water, we pulled out boardgames, lit candles and invited the neighbours over. we all had food in the cupboards from out ‘big trips’ to the urban centre two hours away, but the small town grocery store/pharmacy would open up a few hours on a generator, as the shopkeeper knew how to make change.. and still existed before urban box stores ran them out of business. point being, in the last 20 years we’ve lost even these basic capacities in our technologically improved dumbed down societies.

Before I retired, I was in a position that let me know that what he said is the absolute truth. He didn't mention that many Powerhouses are remotely controlled, often by one person who is monitoring two or more facilities. Most Powerhouse transformer switchyards are vulnerable to attack by any number of means. To use his analogy, the iceberg isn't over the horizon, it's within the fog bank we're about to enter. Actually the military, big business and government have known about this for years. National Geographic even published an edition about it. They have been quietly working on hardening the electrical grid, aircraft, communication system etc. against an EMP for several years. It might help to get them to move a little faster if you are pro-active and contact your state and federal officials and tell them you are aware of this problem and want action. Otherwise you can just stand around in the dark and berate yourself when it finally happens. Putting opaque walls around power substations so bad guys can't see them to shoot at them might help too.

Helpful idea** fasting, cut back on worldly material things and learn self obedience, submit to pray and patience. Learn to go without devices and electricity so if a a time comes one is with out their daily lifestyle, they can be mentally prepared.... I lived in a third world country for 8 years, it changed my life. It wasn't easy, but what I went through, it was a blessing, that experience humbled me in ways I never knew possible... Watching poor kids and families happy with 2 meals a day and never complaning, eating everything on their plates and helping their parents with house hold chores while going to school. Playing with their friends with the same set of clothes for days. Taped broken shoes. Having one school uniform for a year. No electricity for days, and when it does come on.... It's paradise 🤗 I thank God 🙏 for all the years he gave me to live with his creations...

I’ve been having similar dreams like this for about 2-3 years now. After the lights go out, I remember seeing holograms in the sky, and multiple ships that attempted to make a landing on earth.
If this happens, then my dreams are coming true and WTF. And if there is a blackout, we will see a lot that we never imagined.
One thing I remember was we were relieved. We watched a comedy show based in a hospital and I couldn't work out why we were all indoors. I wonder how many of us have had similar dreams?
