Also, warming the tyres means using them more, which might not be as big a problem in 2004 with the long lasting Bridgestones, but today with the soft pirellis that means a lot. You might aswell not consume the tyres as much as you can, then only warm them up once you're about to get underway the next lap (drivers get a warning beforehand so they know when the safety car comes in).

Big part of tyre warming comes from brake heat radiation. If he works on the brakes he is warming up the tyres.
And it doesn't ruin the tyres by stressing them when weaving. It's actually a brilliant idea that I'm surprised nobody else in f1 only uses
