My whole life I adore Leonard Cohen, His songs/poems touches your soul. But he left an other gift: I found Tom Waits because of him.
Leonard wrote a poem about Tom Waits when he saw him on stage. Enjoy:
    DREAM BRIGHTON:
Tom Waits singing - I hear him
    I’m in a theatre - I’ve given
a show to a large audience
    My show went well - I can’t
see him - I’m in my dressing
room - but I can hear him -
his music begin - it is so
    beautiful and original and
    sophisticated - so much better
    than mine - some mélange
    of harshness and sweetness -
    modern and sentimental all
at once - even Kitsch used
    so skillfully - I wish I
could do that - then he
starts to sing - so great -
I go down to hear him -
    expecting a great
    adoring crowd - but
    he’s singing in a half-full
    small theatre - a kind
    of afterthought of a
    theatre - we leave together
    he puts his arm around
    my shoulder - he looks
    good - a bit beat up -
a bit older - but in full
    possession of himself
    Leonard Cohen

I forget where I saw this, but someone once wrote that the difference between this version and the Rod Stewart cover (which is great in its own right), is that Rod is singing from his terrace in his Uptown doorman building while drinking a glass of wine, and Tom is singing outside of his Downtown walk-up and drinking out of a paper bag. It's perfect.

No matter who you are, you have faced loneliness, you have faced despair. Many people have reached the point of suicide, where they can't go on. Some have sadly crossed it. Some have been there and come back. Some have known people who went there and didn't. This music speaks to those of us who have been lonely, wounded dreamers, with a few drops of dream left, with a few drops of hope. And when you listen to this music, you know you are NOT alone.

I forget the category, but I bet a grand and the answer was about that famous Hopper painting, and me, flashing on Tom Waits, said "What is Nighthawks At The Diner?" Turns out that the actual question should have been "What is Night Hawks?" Waits misled me, and I still think he owes me that money.

Habiib Qawiy No, I would put it over Blue Valentines and probably small change but Mike Variations was his first album since Bone Machine and it sort of combined everything from his past works, took influence from his early stuff and then had songs that would remind you of Singapore or Union Square which were off this album. Both great albums though

passing time and changing lives. Time was when I identified with the wastrel troubadour obsessed with love down in the alley keeping the neighbourhood up. Now I feel more comfortable in the skin of Jake , the older guy who just wants to sleep . Noted for the record : Jake's wife doesn't close the window , she opens it . That speaks volumes to their relationship

    Outside another yellow moon
Punched a hole in the nighttime, yes
I climb through the window and down the street
I'm shining like a new dime
    The downtown trains are full
    With all those Brooklyn girls
They try so hard to break out of their little worlds
You wave your hand and they scatter like crows
They have nothing that will ever capture your heart
They're just thorns without the rose
Be careful of them in the dark
Oh if I was the one
You chose to be your only one
Oh baby can't you hear me now
    Will I see you tonight
    On a downtown train?
Every night its just the same
    You leave me lonely, now
I know your window and I know it's late
I know your stairs and your doorway
I walk down your street and past your gate
I stand by the light at the four way
You watch them as they fall
    They all have heart attacks
    They stay at the carnival
But they'll never win you back
    Will I see you tonight
    On a downtown train
Where every night is just the same
    Will I see you tonight
    On a downtown train
All of my dreams just fall like rain
    All on a downtown train
