My son introduced me to him 23 years ago with “ The piano has been drinking” .. I’ve loved his music and his great humour ever since .. I’m 79 this year. ❤️Tom Waits
No matter who you are, you have faced loneliness, you have faced despair. Many people have reached the point of suicide, where they can't go on. Some have sadly crossed it. Some have been there and come back. Some have known people who went there and didn't. This music speaks to those of us who have been lonely, wounded dreamers, with a few drops of dream left, with a few drops of hope. And when you listen to this music, you know you are NOT alone.
Been there, thought about it, came back. It's words like yours vinn vass that can inspire to keep going. I'm still catching the downtown train, I just walk alone to get there. Cheers vinn vass.
Bought every record he's ever made, watched every movie he's been in! Saw him first in 1973 with a bass player, his piano and guitar and have seen every iteration of his stage show...I think about 12 times. Tom Waits is the absolute best. An American treasure.
Saw him at the Tomorrow Club in Youngstown OH, about 1979. I still remember that show. Great time. Tom Waits is an American icon. A diamond in the rough.
Possibly one of the best story tellers ever...along side Dylan & Springsteen in my opinion. 'Heart Attack & Vine' was the last album that I really loved - I wish he'd released a few more like that.
His wife has irish relatives so I'll say he,s part irish treasure where would we be without Tom Waits growling out words to make one weep, from an irish person
I have to say though, after listening to his music for a bit i was kind of underwhelmed by some of the movies he was in (EG 7 psychopaths was far less interesting then i would have imagined a movie with Tom Waits). The Jim Jarmusch movies with him were great though.
Rising from the Southern California dust, Waits spins tales of romance, failure and accepting the freedom of the road. The American Dream through his wonderfully altered eyes.
I still think that this is one of the greatest opening lines EVER "outside another yellow moon has punched a hole in the nighttime" I mean, awesome. And this was the song and video that introduced me to the music of TOM WAITS.I've been hooked ever since.
Really? I've made fun of the lyrics for years. I agree about the first line. But everything after that doesn't make sense. If the sun has risen before he slips out his window and down to the street then how does he see these people every night? Although I do still like this specific release over any other.
I hope you will always stay 17 dear friend. Everyone who listens to Tom Waits as long as we do (since 20, listening to him almost 40 years too) will be forever 17.

I forget where I saw this, but someone once wrote that the difference between this version and the Rod Stewart cover (which is great in its own right), is that Rod is singing from his terrace in his Uptown doorman building while drinking a glass of wine, and Tom is singing outside of his Downtown walk-up and drinking out of a paper bag. It's perfect.
I was fortunate enough to see Tom at the Paramount in Seattle in the 70's. I am 72 now (2021) and have loved his music since then. Tom and Bob Dylan are the only great poet musicians of my generation. Who would need more?

Nothin in the world quite like drinking in a dive bar on a rainy day listening to Tom Waits...one of life's greatest joys
ya got it
exactly
4 years sober and there are definitely things I miss. That is one of them
Wasted and wounded
Ain't what the moon did
Got what I paid for now
We all been there
Yes!!! Spent many a mights myself in local dive bars, Closing Time
This is the song for the lost and wounded who only have a glimmer of hope left. I don't need the video, just the song.
I wouldn't mind Tom Waits singing outside my window every time there's a full moon
🖤🖤🖤
It’s a fool moon
I'd set out a six pack for him
Yesss!
If he could still sing
the most beautiful song in the earth
lmao right.
70s Waits was magnificent, but 80s Waits is just a whole other level. One of the defining turning points of modern day music.
Indeed!
everybody should listen to at least one Tom Waits song a day. The rest of your day will be much better
Totally true
I don't always start my day with Tom Waits, but when I do it's because I've been drinking whiskey through sunrise.
Yeah, because it will make every other song you hear sound better.
I like chocolate Jesus! On a Sunday.
Tom Waits writes songs about wounded people with just a few drops of dream left.
Beautifully put man..beautifully put. I'm definitely one of those "wounded dreamers"...guess most of us are.
Ah, Tom - you either love him or your heart is a shriveled up old prune.

No wonder his songs stay in my soul.

My whole life I adore Leonard Cohen, His songs/poems touches your soul. But he left an other gift: I found Tom Waits because of him.
Leonard wrote a poem about Tom Waits when he saw him on stage. Enjoy:
DREAM BRIGHTON:
Tom Waits singing - I hear him
I’m in a theatre - I’ve given
a show to a large audience
My show went well - I can’t
see him - I’m in my dressing
room - but I can hear him -
his music begin - it is so
beautiful and original and
sophisticated - so much better
than mine - some mélange
of harshness and sweetness -
modern and sentimental all
at once - even Kitsch used
so skillfully - I wish I
could do that - then he
starts to sing - so great -
I go down to hear him -
expecting a great
adoring crowd - but
he’s singing in a half-full
small theatre - a kind
of afterthought of a
theatre - we leave together
he puts his arm around
my shoulder - he looks
good - a bit beat up -
a bit older - but in full
possession of himself
Leonard Cohen
Thanks!
Thanks a lot ☺
High praise indeed. Thanks so much ❤
Love Leonard Cohen..found him from Natural Born Killers

Thanx Tom !!!
What a wonderfully strange and talented man. I'm glad.
The redemptive power of art is for everyone, even those dont know that for a moment they belong to the masterpiece vignette of another.
Love this genius.
Great songwriting.
A truly original singer-songwriter.
simply exquisite!
I'm 66yrs.. And just listening to Tom. Nice video... I used to like Rods version.. But this is The Best.. ( I like.. Down Bound Train) by Bruce.. (My X Boss!) 🎸🎶🥁🇺🇸
I’ve been a music teacher my whole adult life . Questioning why on earth I did it. Then i listen to music like this again , and Bruce , and I try to keep going, trying to pass on something of the feeling when I hear this .
Saw this video in the 80's and fell in love....
Now 35 years later its still one of my all time favorites.
Raindogs is an amazing album by an amazing artist. Nuff said
The song and the video fit perfectly. When I listen to this song I often have to listen and watch the video multiple times because. It portrays a world I never want to leave with all the characters I relate with too. it just feels like home.
Master songwriter at the top of his game
Happy birthday Tom and thank you for keeping me alive for the last 25+ years man I love y’all
