I have fought off foreclosure five times. I found out my wife was having an affair a week after having my heart attack. I got fat, bald and my knees went bad. I have been on the brink of bankruptcy more times than I can count. Felt like a failure as a husband, a father, a friend and a man. Now I am back on my feet, had one of the best Christmases of my life and will be a Grandfather in March. Tom is right. You just got to hold on. It's hard but you can do it.
I’ve been through about everything you mentioned. Throw in a severe addiction to multiple substances. I’m really glad that you found your way through it. Tom Waits is the reason I am still here. I only had 2 albums in 1998, one Richie Sambora, one Tom Waits. Both cost half monthly income. I had no equipment to listen to these as I was homeless. Went to joint in old town, put the CD on and asked permission to wash my hair in that huge metal sink at the back. Then did the dishes for beer and some food. Survived the harsh winters.
Even going through hard times, you showed respect by earning your way while introducing some ppl to Tom Waits. Hope life is a going easier for you now. You hold on, k👍🏻

Praying to God I would not lose him, Tom helped me to hold on and gave me hope. I am forever grateful to this talented artist that helped give me the strength to keep going. ❤

Good for you! I have had bankruptcy once and three years ago my wife of 20 years left me at about the same time I was diagnosed with cancer of the mouth, which resulted in losing most of my lower jaw. Since then I have had a lung embolism, a collapsed lung, blood poisoning, and once my heart stopped beating for about two minutes. But somehow, something inside me said to Hold On. So now I am still here and maybe healthier than I have been in 20+ years. Great song.
This was the first song I heard when I left my abusive wife 2 years ago. My boys and I moved in with my mom and dad and we lost dad last year. Regretfully, this was the first song I heard from Tom Waits and I cried like a baby when he said "come on, Jim" because it felt like he was speaking right to me. Things are only getting better as time rolls on. And all you have to do is hold on.
My favorite Tom song. Featured on an episode of the Walking Dead. The blonde girl sings it a capella around the fire as the rest sit still and soak up the sentiment. Beautiful.
This man doesnt write songs, he writes stories. Stories from the heart and from the soul, more real than anything you will ever hear on the radio. I hope you live to be 100, Tom, and keep the music flowing.

Been listening to Tom Waits since I was 17 and I'm 25 now. I always dislike when older people think younger people can't like, enjoy, or understand something. Tom Waits is one of if not my favorite musician ever and he has brought me through many rough moments in my life
My first husband (now dead) turned me on to Tom. His name was Jim. Our relationship wasn’t headed where I was hoping - so after 6 yrs of dating I moved to California to pursue my passion. The line about “she went and took that California trip” - and the line about “don’t look back just come on Jim” - have always resonated. We eventually married - and divorced - and he passed passed shortly thereafter - listening to this song is tough. Bittersweet. More bitter than sweet. Makes me wonder if I should have held on longer than I did with his sobriety struggles. Went on to have a family after him. And amazing kids. My dream realized. But he was my soulmate. Tough to listen to Tom. He was my soulmate and without him I’d never have been introduced to Tom. This song is a tough one now though. Very evocative.
Я убежден, что настоящим поэтам текст диктует сам Господь Бог. И они поют непосредственно Тебе . братишки и Сестренки дождитесь рассвета . дальше все будет лучше. Берегите себя и ближних.
Tom Waits doesnt write music. He just takes a pen and his heart spills through the tip of it. The man has a gift that countless people would die for. I know I would. I could try to write a song...I could NOT try to write a song and just scribble; but nothing that comes from my pen or my piano or my guitar will EVER be as profound and REAL as the miraculous messages and tones that plume from this man....this gift from God to the human race.
You cant "share" Tom's songs, because your friends wont feel what you feel listening to it. Their own their own journey, which is why they may need to hear it. They wont get what you're going through, but his pain will help them get through their struggles. Which is why he MUST be shared
I was so happy when Beth Greene from TWD [The Walking Dead] (my fav character😊) sang this for her whole group when they were preparing for the war in Season 3, it was so nostalgic. Missing the old TWD when it was that deep and the characters were the original🥺🥹💓✨🌌

I remember riding with my Dad in his 1995 Del Sol with the top down while listening to Tom Waits - I was only 8 years old and we were both hungry for food, and Dad was also hungry for new cigars. It was always a Saturday, the day he had off from work back then, and we would find our way to Chick-fil-A, one of the newer fast food chains in our area that happened to nestle itself in a corner across the parking lot of Boda Pipes, a local cigar store. He would load Bone Machine into his CD player before we left and he would always make sure that our car rides together finished the entire CD, which was just short of an hour of drive time. My Dad loved listening to albums front to back, all the time. Never a song wasted. And now that I know how long it took to get to Chick-fil-A, Boda Pipes, and then back home, it was far short of the 53 minute runtime of that Tom Waits album. Tom Waits meant so much to him at that time that we absolutely had to share the drive and songs together until they were done. And boy oh boy did it wear off on me.
As rough as some of his work sounds, it's songs like this, soft broken little ballads sung from the heart that truly show you Tom's range. From crooner to caterwauler, bulldog to bawler, this man isn't great simply because of his unique voice. It's the soul of his lyrics and the pure, raw, honesty of his performances that truly distinguish him as a master of his craft.
This song is playing and it's the last day of 2020. Goodbye hellscape year. Hold on everyone. Bless you and let's do good for each other and move forward to a more compassionate time.
I am 24 years old, and I'm upset that before tonight I had no idea Tom Waits was anything but an actor. I'm mad at my momma. Why wasn't I raised right, listening to this man?
My son doesn't like Beatles even though I do like them, but he loves Tom Waits. I guess it's about personal taste. But I'm not going to hide that I'm so proud of him liking Waits over Beatles, mommy's boy. :)

I grew up listening to Tom Waits and man this guy is a genius from songwriting to composition, he is a master at his craft and and a true poet with his lyrics. Hold On is a song that I remember when I was growing up in the 1990s. Its a work of art. My dad is a huge fan of Tom and drew me to his music. I guess I was raised the right way.
It was the 70s. I was living near Chicago and seeing all the folk musicians like Steve Goodman and John Prine etc live and in person. Then a friend said we gotta see this Tom Waits guy. I think he was appearing at Biddy Mulligan's on the far north side. Standing in line to get in a scruffy skinny guy is stumbling around pushing his way in. He mumbled something about "where's the bathroom..." It was Tom Waits, already in character. Been a fan ever since!
I'm a Tom Waits fan of 25 years. I couldn't be more ecstatic to have heard this song on my favorite show. I'm glad more people get the opportunity to discover and enjoy the vast catalogue of music that this genius has created.
If you are going through a junk yard of a time in life, I always recommend Tom Waits - man is one of my biggest musical heroes - but also one of my biggest hero's
Hold on... Never give up... No matter what. This too will pass... and be replaced by other (though not necessarily the same, but still) great reasons for love, gratitude, faith and joy.
Dear sir I want to thank u for all ur amazing music my husband and I have been thru so much in the past 3 years but ur songs soothe our souls and make us smile thank u so much
“Charcoal eyes and Monroe hips” - taking that California trip has been my dream for more than a decade. I grew up totally obsessed with the US, and I think about it every day, how great it must be to live in LA, close to the ocean, in a Miami, Fort Lauderdale, New York City, strolling across Martha’s Vineyard, waking up under the West Virgina sun... maybe one day

All these years and I still find Tom saving me again and again. Whether it's after a bad breakup or my search for God and complete and utter surrender to that Force, Tom is always there. Thank you. ❣️❤️
Life is NOT a trinket like a dime store watch or a spoon ring. It's the only thing we cannot replace. Tom Waits comes gritty and hard with the truth. Overcoming resistance by holding on will add more value to a precious life. Gritty and hard have help pave the way for a smoother and softer existence.

Lyrics
They hung a sign up in our town
"If you live it up, you won't live it down"
So she left Monte Rio, son
Just like a bullet leaves a gun
With her charcoal eyes and Monroe hips
She went and took that California trip
Oh, the moon was gold, her hair like wind
Said, "don't look back, just come on, Jim"
Oh, you got to hold on, hold on
You gotta hold on
Take my hand, I'm standing right here, you gotta hold on
Well, he gave her a dimestore watch
And a ring made from a spoon
Everyone's looking for someone to blame
When you share my bed, you share my name
Well, go ahead and call the cops
You don't meet nice girls in coffee shops
She said, "baby, I still love you"
Sometimes there's nothin' left to do
Oh, but you got to hold on, hold on
Babe, you gotta hold on and take my hand
I'm standing right here, you gotta hold on
Well, God bless your crooked little heart
St. Louis got the best of me
I miss your broken China voice
How I wish you were still here with me
Oh, you build it up, you wreck it down
Then you burn your mansion to the ground
Oh, there's nothing left to keep you here
But when you're falling behind in this big blue world
Oh, you've got to hold on, hold on
Babe, you gotta hold on
Take my hand, I'm standing right here, you gotta hold on
Down by the Riverside motel
It's ten below and falling
By a ninety-nine cent store
She closed her eyes and started swaying
But it's so hard to dance that way
When it's cold and there's no music
Oh, your old hometown's so far away
But inside your head there's a record that's playing
A song called "Hold On", hold on
Babe, you gotta hold on
Take my hand, I'm standing right there, you gotta hold on
You gotta hold on, hold on
Babe, you gotta hold on
Take my hand, I'm standing right there, you gotta hold on
You gotta hold on, hold on
Babe, you gotta hold on
And take my hand, I'm standing right here, you gotta hold on
You gotta hold on, hold on
Babe, you gotta hold on
And take my hand, I'm standing right here, you gotta hold on
You gotta hold on
You gotta hold on
You gotta hold on
You gotta hold on
You gotta hold on, baby
You gotta hold on, girl
You gotta hold on
You gotta hold on

Waits is an American treasure. I came to his music late, but I believe only those of us with a few years under our belts can appreciate him.
Thanks for your sincere compliment and love, I’m not complete without you as my Fan 🌹🎻 I have you to be most thankful for 🎻🎻🌹
I've been listening since my 20s and now am 60 .. it's the same appreciation ..I just have more understanding lol and can relate in a different way .. or .. you are probly correct ...
@joycepugh331 The comment right after yours is from a 20 year old - I glean from his brief comment his appreciation of Tom Waits would rival yours. ❤️
@@tomwaits264 So fake... 😂
Been listening to Tom Waits since I was 17 and I'm 25 now. I always dislike when older people think younger people can't like, enjoy, or understand something. Tom Waits is one of if not my favorite musician ever and he has brought me through many rough moments in my life
I am 70 now after listening to tom for years each song comes out fresh to my ears with my own interpretation pertaining to my life
One of the greatest songs ever written.
You must be high as fuck. This shit sucks
Hold on...is the one you can do... it's the reason for all living beings around the world 🌎🫶
1st time I've heard him. I think he's definitely got talent writing music. His voice is unique.
Very evocative.
was it sucide?
alcohol...it's silent suicide, whether intentional or a by-product. At least with those I've lost to it. 😔
this song saved my life
You get the feeling Tom writes these songs with no idea how much they mean to people....he doesnt know us but they hit the heart
Tom knows us. Just close your eyes next time you listen to any of his albums.
You gotta share! It’s a gift if one person discovers an artist they’ve never been exposed to. Share the love ❤
A broken heart isn't dead! It's just broken!!
It goes well with a bad liver.
This man is our brother. God love him.
I was so happy when Beth Greene from TWD [The Walking Dead] (my fav character😊) sang this for her whole group when they were preparing for the war in Season 3, it was so nostalgic. Missing the old TWD when it was that deep and the characters were the original🥺🥹💓✨🌌
My God, that was absolutely beautiful.
It's been almost 10 years. And this never ceases to remind me to hold on. It gets less painful, but still hurts. Tom, thanks for all you do.
You can say that again…
He have a soulful voice!
This is my favorite song 🎶 so tell me are you a fan of Tom?

Tom is my favorite poet.❤
What a brilliant artist. Wasn't just about the music. He is a "Showman"
The way Tom Waits connects with broken hearts is amazing.
Tom Waits is needed in the music industry
Ja, nur Geld....
This man's ability to both embrace and mock sadness should give us all hope.
본인만의 특유한 감성과 매우 독특한 구성. 저 시대에 저런 것을 떠올리다니 ... 거장임에 분명하다. 감사합니다.
I am ADDICTED to this song… so beautiful, he sings it so heartbroken. There's nothing better than listening Tom Waits in maximal volume on my balcony.
+longlivethedrama I am addicted to it too :-)
I played this son for my mom when she was in the hospital to this day iv never herd a song that has more meaning to me than tom waits hold on
It’s got me coming back here at least twice a week since 3 months ago when I heard it the first time, truly addicted this week.
Well, I'm now in love with you..so yeah...Gonna somehow have to explain this to my wife..
me to i have to old on
This song is playing and it's the last day of 2020. Goodbye hellscape year. Hold on everyone. Bless you and let's do good for each other and move forward to a more compassionate time.
Come on up to the house.
You bet! This will get better.thankyou for your positivity. We all need some of that. Goodbye nightmare year.hello better things to come.bless you.xxx
I am sorry to inform you that 2021 also sucked. Still glad that 2020 is over, though.
I am 24 years old, and I'm upset that before tonight I had no idea Tom Waits was anything but an actor. I'm mad at my momma. Why wasn't I raised right, listening to this man?
24 years old, Neil Young’s “Old Man” from the album Harvest might make a nice mixed drink with this song. Peace to you my friend.
I found him late myself, but every day since has been better
@@evanbaker4780 Well I'm not one much for drinking, but tonight is a Kentucky bourbon creme in a coffee kinda night, I think that'll suffice, no?
My son doesn't like Beatles even though I do like them, but he loves Tom Waits. I guess it's about personal taste. But I'm not going to hide that I'm so proud of him liking Waits over Beatles, mommy's boy. :)
I feel you, and i am 35 🤦🏼♂
My first vinyl in my vinyl collection was this album, i just wanted something i can touch. Tom is the best.
Oh man.. amazing way to start the collection. My favorite one in my collection is also his albume :)
This song got me through 2020 and all of its anguish and all of the passings of friends and family of late. Art is lifesaving.
You can say that again…
He have a soulful voice!

How does a man who sounds like he smokes tires and drinks gasoline make such beautiful songs?
+Odin Tillgren Oh man, I was just thinking something very like that. Truth!
That is a brilliant line "he smokes tyres and drinks gasoline
Him and Leonard Cohen make that "I gargle shards of glass and bleach" voice work amazingly well.
great writer makes all the deference
lol and let's not forget bob dylan, joe cocker...it's the man behind da voice, every time. He gives me goosebumps. Every time
Uwielbiam Toma ,że jest prawdziwym facetem i nie udaje innego lepszego .❤
Meeting Tom Waits is on my bucket list. I would be so happy to just sit and have a cup of coffee with the man.
Heretic You should watch "Coffee & Cigarettes". There's a scene where Tom and Iggy Pop have coffee together.
That is a good show, I've seen it a couple times
It would probably be Irish coffee
I think he died. But I would like to meet him too
@@chriskirkland1816 He is alive.
Don’t forget about Kathleen Brennan
@@ryMorVEX I am going to be doing a radio Spotlight on Tom Waits and yes his wife Kathleen is a wonderful songwriter.
He mumbled something about "where's the bathroom..."
It was Tom Waits, already in character. Been a fan ever since!
I'm a Tom Waits fan of 25 years. I couldn't be more ecstatic to have heard this song on my favorite show. I'm glad more people get the opportunity to discover and enjoy the vast catalogue of music that this genius has created.
How can you not love Tom Waits?
The hidden treasures of music. Absolute masterpiece.
We were told music should be lilting and perfect but then Tom came along and taught us differently.
this was posted 15 years ago?!! only 9.4 million views....this is such an underrated song, I absolutely love the song and the video.
If you are going through a junk yard of a time in life, I always recommend Tom Waits - man is one of my biggest musical heroes - but also one of my biggest hero's
The fact he can still produce such amazing songs in his old age is beautiful.
Other musicians ain't touching him.
Our Tom is not OLD! He's better with age! Like a fine, fine wine!! Hope he lives for another 50 years!
This song is like 25 years old
I grew up totally obsessed with the US, and I think about it every day, how great it must be to live in LA, close to the ocean, in a Miami, Fort Lauderdale, New York City, strolling across Martha’s Vineyard, waking up under the West Virgina sun...
maybe one day
I grew up in Ft. Lauderdale, it’s a terrible place. Miami too.
Tim esita touches my heart all the time . He’s unique. Never old
You can say that again…

When Tom Waits sings his sad songs, they cut right to the heart. So many times I find myself crying,....
They say when we cry were talking to our soul...go figure
This man is a work of art
This song definitely helped me through some bad times. This whole album is quite under-rated truthfully.
I put my Playlist on mix and played it all night (couldn't sleep). This is one of the several beautiful songs that I discovered.
Waits is a truly unique musician and storyteller. I would love to see him in concert.
Me too !!! :-)
In the World of popular music , Tom Waits is right up there with the best . Tremendous wordsmith and performer .
If you live it up ,you wont live it down. Greatest
TOM IS WHAT KEEP'S ME ALIVE !!
So beautiful. His voice so fits the rhythm. Love this song.
Wow! One of the most beautiful and lyrical songs I have ever heard from Waits so far. "Holding On" on repeat!
Your's are beautiful as you look, Thank's for your sincere compliment, I would always give appreciation to my dedicated fan like you

If I had a dollar for each time a Tom Waits lyric or turn of phrase brought a tear to my eye...well....well sir, I'd have a lot of dollars. Well done, and thank you for posting.
One of the greatest of all times
If you live it up, you won't live it down is easily the greatest lyric ever.
All these years and I still find Tom saving me again and again. Whether it's after a bad breakup or my search for God and complete and utter surrender to that Force, Tom is always there. Thank you. ❣️❤️
Toms music and lyrics have always felt so nostalgic to me and like the songs were written directly to speak to me.
can never understand how our music went from this to whatever they make now. it’s incomparable
IT'S CALLED MONEY. VAST SUMS OF MONEY NAD NOTHING ELSE THAT MATTERS!
What you mean rap
@@SICPARVISMAGNA3018 no all music in general
Been a fan of Tom's since 1977 , it's been a beautiful, wonderful ride luved every minute ...
What an artist, poet a wind that breezes straight into one's soul. ❤️ Hold On.🌹
