Indonesia. Bangka. This small village in the forest in the early 80's. Nowhere on the map. I was around 11. I was played this Rod Stewart's song (and others too, course) on a tape player by my uncle, Kak Mawi (Uncle Mawi) for the first time. It's been years. And the song lingers in my head: 'Downtown Train'. Now when I want to remember and cherish that moment again, I got this. And I feel like going back in time...

I used to see this video on MTV or VH1- back on early 90s almost every morning before going to school with Subway to downtown in DC,.. what a memory.. love Sir Rod Stewart since I knew the song "I don't wanna talk about it" somewhere in my high school time.. Bless him,..
I'm not a big Rod Stewart fan, but I agree that his late '80s and early-'90s songs were exceptional. I appreciate his phrasing especially, particularly on this tune and "Rhythm of My Heart."
I fully agree with your comment.. I personally hated the "sandpaper noise" of Maggie May in 1972 and would turn the sound off my radio for 5 minutes whenever it came on . I can't get enough of this one .. His mid-to-late 80's music is beautiful and timeless.. more and better instrumentation helped grow him as an artist and convey the inner emotion of his singing... ..a high school classmate was at a concert in Texas last year and was posting video clips of it on his Facebook page...he was in the upper right seating area..
I'm a person up in age in a profession that every day I never know if that day I'll not not go home . I heard this Song with Mr Rod Stewart. It so reminds me of my younger years and makes my heart get full of beautiful memories of people who I grown to love and miss so very much . Love Them All .
When Bob Seger lived in LA, he became friends with Rod and he shared with him that he was going to publish this song but then Rod decided to publish it.
I moved to the States in the late 80's. This tune was one of the first ones I heard on a local radio back then, and I was immediately taken back by its mixture of melancholy and profoundness that just rises upwards. What a masterpiece! Still is, still feels good to hear this after all these years.
No matter how many years pass, this song remains my favourite. Not sure why but I love it. Reminds me of being a carefree teen when I first heard it in 1989. Oh to be young again.
All my Dreams, Mr. Stewart ........ and I'm 79 and just immersed in the beauty of your voice and words .......Thank you ... I hope you believe in your own Soul .... just how many billions of humans you have touched by your voice ............
Once upon a time, in a bustling city filled with music and magic, there lived a young musician named Rod Stewart. Rod had a passion for music that bubbled up from his soul, and he spent his days strumming his guitar and singing songs about love, adventure, and the wonders of the world. One sunny afternoon, as Rod wandered the streets of downtown, he stumbled upon an old, rusty train station. The station was a relic from another era, with vintage train cars and a nostalgic charm that drew Rod in like a magnet. As he approached, he heard the faint whistle of a train in the distance. Excitement surged through Rod's veins as he realized that this was no ordinary train. It was the Downtown Train, a magical locomotive that traveled through time and space, taking passengers on whimsical journeys to fantastical lands. Without hesitation, Rod boarded the train, his heart pounding with anticipation. Inside, he found a colorful array of passengers-a talking parrot with a penchant for pirate tales, a wise old wizard brewing potions in the dining car, and a group of singing mermaids in the pool car. As the train chugged along, Rod's guitar became his ticket to adventure. With each strum and each melody, the train would speed up, slow down, or change direction, whisking them off to new and exciting destinations. They traveled to the Wild West, where Rod had a showdown with a guitar-playing cowboy and won the heart of a fiery saloon singer. They journeyed to a mystical forest, where Rod played enchanting tunes that made the trees dance and the animals sing along. But the most magical moment came when the Downtown Train took them to the Land of Dreams. Here, Rod met a kind-hearted princess who had lost her smile. With his music and charm, Rod helped her rediscover joy and laughter, and in return, she gifted him a magical harmonica that could play any song from the heart. As the sun began to set on their adventure, Rod knew it was time to return home. The Downtown Train made its final stop back at the old station, and Rod stepped off, his heart full of memories and melodies. From that day on, whenever Rod Stewart strummed his guitar and sang about the Downtown Train, people would smile and remember the magical journey they had taken together, fueled by music, love, and a touch of whimsy.
Anyone going through a heartbreak or anything that's tearing you apart. Don't worry. Take it day by day. Keep on moving. You got this! The world is your oyster, and you're the pearl.
not as bad as I thought knowing that THIS is what nudged Tom Waits into the category of underappreciated most precious artists of all time. It angers me.... but such is life. Thank you Tom I love you
Back in the day when this came out it was so pertinent. But kids today see it as just another music video instead of the music and the meaning of the videos use to be. Top shelf. Always.
I love this song and the Tom Waits version. I strongly connect to the protagonist here. A lonely man who's admiring a woman from afar wondering if anything will happen between them. Will they ever develop a relationship or just see each other in passing on a Downtown Train.

I did meet many Brooklyn girls ,,,went to their weddings and everything he's saying is 100% true. He is such a great singer as He's telling this story about the train, it makes me rethink what I lived through during though years . He is so accurate in how he describes everything about the downtown train. All I know is I survived it. I made it to and from Manhattan everyday on that E-Train. It's like a memory I'll never forget. I just love the way he sings this song as it's just so true!! Thanks, Ro 3:11 d 💖😘
Seeing your sweetheart boarding a train by herself at night, you worry, you want to protect her, you love her, and so you sing your heart out to her, hoping maybe she will hear you you.
Seen him many times. He has gotten better and better as time goes by. What's unique about Rod is his ability to find songs that fit him. A great entertainer.
This jewel of a record is simply the best ‘cover’ of any song from that entire era. The haunting lyrical genius of Tom Waits’ song, but completely reimagined by a certified legend, 18 years after Sir Rod’s iconic record ’Maggie May’. That is a career that just never seemed to end, & Rod has sounded technically excellent throughout his long career when other stars faltered. He practices & studies voice, he has always been a student of his art. Every second of this performance is charged with nearly unheard of power & romance. One of my top 40 records of all time. Gahhh!🫠

Wonderful people, wonderful living, the expansiveness of all of us traveling and finding soulmates around the world, the hope, the music, good food, it was the best time. Now we have spun off into a vacant galaxy of nothing. But thank Creator for internet, for cds, casettes, memories. I bought Rod's auto biography for my birthday, so that I would always be able to "hear his voice" no mater what happens in the world. * in those days you COULD take a downtown train. I took downtown trains in Montreal in the late 90s at night, thoughtnothing of it, pretty darn safe, and wonderful .
Very nice song.. I wa 20 when I listen to this song first time in 94.. I am 47 now and I it's always one of my favourites songs. Thanks Rod Stewart.
Thanks for liking and listening to my songs, Thanks for your love♥️ and moral support. I hope you have been well entertained over the years?
I was very well during this years and I thank you very much for your sublime sympathy. I also hope you have been very well too and I wish you all the best, Mr. Stewart.

Indonesia.
He was the soundtrack to my best years of my life. My mom loved him since 1971 when I discovered him, she was a fan of great soul singers like Otis Redding and Sam Cooke, once I played her Rods versions of their songs she said she liked Rods versions better!!! When he came out with those dreadful Great American Songbook albums, I thought she'd love them, she said 'I like his OLD STUFF better. She developed Alzheimers and only wanted to listen to Rod. She died at 92, listening to Rod till she took her last breath. Great LADY, great taste in music! Bless her!

Tom Waits is a ridiculously underrated songwriter
Sir Rod, one of the very best ever with a unique husky voice. New him in my secondary school days in the eastern region of Nigeria. I really love him.
Better version is Tom Waits
Does not get enough credit for Jersey girl.
Tom also wrote 'Old 55 The Eagles hit.
We don't give a feck to some Tom Waits. No feck all.
I always thought this was Rod Stewart’s greatest vocal performance. Absolutely fantastic and thank you Tom Waits for writing such an amazing song
And just like ALWAYS…EVERY single song by Rod is amazing. I’ve been a fan since the early 70’s. He’s one of a kind. The voice, the hair, the clothes ❤
Really? Have you heard "Do ya Think I'm Sexy"? The second-hand cringe is...well, cringey. lol

"You wave your hand and they scatter like crows
They have nothing that'll ever capture your heart
They're just thorns without the rose
Be careful of them in the dark"
I used to see this video on MTV or VH1- back on early 90s almost every morning before going to school with Subway to downtown in DC,.. what a memory.. love Sir Rod Stewart since I knew the song "I don't wanna talk about it" somewhere in my high school time.. Bless him,..
I thank Rod's best music came in the late eighties, it's timeless. Sounds just as good now as it did then, never gets old.

"covering" it's original song by Tom Waits
Such a soul touching beginning this classic has, just know the memories are going to tease you with periods of your youth. Great old tunes.
I so want to be back in my youth again listening to Rod when he was younger he was amazing then and he is now
This song was written by Tom Waits. For me the best Songwriter of all time. And a exzellent Cover from Rod Steward.
Rod Stewart is a amazing singer.
just love this wow
I moved to the States in the late 80's. This tune was one of the first ones I heard on a local radio back then, and I was immediately taken back by its mixture of melancholy and profoundness that just rises upwards. What a masterpiece! Still is, still feels good to hear this after all these years.
Yet another jewell in the crown for Rod Stewart his list of hits is endless and so is his voice
RELENTLESS
Thanks for posting and sharing this video for today’s generation and for all those who used to love your songs...

I live in the Bronx and always play this on Friday nights when I head downtown into Manhattan.
Love listening to the song while on the Express!
Thing is folks in Brooklyn take the R train north towards downtown Brooklyn, which is on the south/southeast side of Manhattan.
But instead of a cute blonde you sing this to the homeless hoard who have commandeered the NYC subway system
its sound very nice for doing so
That's cool!!

"Outside another yellow moon has punched a hole in the night time mist" That line really paints a picture with words.

For anyone who lived in America especially New York. This song and version can take you back. Wherever you are in the world. Absolutely beautiful
Memories. I was young and in pain. This song soothed me
Seen him many times.
Gahhh!🫠
