I am a 57 year old German and still love this song. I was brought up by my grandfather who was born 1912 and fought in WWII, not voluntarily. One day in France he and another soldier ventured out of the camp, without their weapons, to climb a mountain as they both were keen mountaineers. Halfway up the mountain they encountered members of the Maquis who could have easily (and understandably) killed my grandfather and his friend but they didn't. Instead, they were a group of like minded mountaineers and talked. I am forever grateful as otherwise I wouldn't be here...

@@itisonlyme1 Special Operations Executive - go read. What gives is the Lawyers have an idea war can be fought by Rules of Engagement. The Civvies, when push comes to shove, don't agree, as we've just seen in the National Service fiasco. They'll fight back, and that's where The Partisan comes in, particularly in the current imagery descended from the Russian Revolution inspiring Communist partisans ever since. Cohen talks about the Resistance, but there's Hemingway before him, any many many more going back to the 14th Century, struggling for human rights. You don't have to look far to see the same stylisation now. The resulting asymmetrical strife defeated the Red Cross Geneva Conventions after WW2, and is partly typified by the general political model of democracy now. Partisan, an adherent to a Party. That's very pertinent to the US now. Is Government by the People for the People a reality?

In loving memory of mister Henri Poirson , a french resistant I met twenty-five years ago . He was asked in 1942 by his boss to help some fugitives to go through the german lines , in the Vosges . Henri simply answered "Yes" , without consider risks for himself or his family . He was caught by the Nazis soon in the year 1944 and sent first to Natzweiler-Struthof , then Dachau . He survived because he had some friends (real life companions) who gave him some part of their poor eating... When Henri , who was really tall , came back home in his Vosgian village , his weight was less than 45 kg... The first time I met this gentle man at my job , I immediatly saw a tattoed number on one of his arms . Shy , I asked him what was that tattoo . So he explained me calmly what he did during Second World War . Since then , I really loved to talk with him ! He could speak about every subject with wisdom and humility . I miss him since the end of 2017 ... :'(

The Francs-Tireurs et Partisans Français[a] (FTPF), or commonly the Francs-Tireurs et Partisans (FTP), was an armed resistance organization created by leaders of the French Communist Party during World War II (1939-45). The communist party was neutral at first, following the Soviet Union's official view that the war was a struggle between imperialists, but when Germany invaded the Soviet Union in June 1941 changed to a policy of armed resistance against the German occupation of France. Three groups were formed, consisting of party members, young communists and foreign workers. Early in 1942 they were merged to form the FTP, which undertook sabotage and assassinations of the occupation. The FTP became the best organized and most effective of the French Resistance groups. In March 1944, before the Allied forces returned to Normandy, the FTP was theoretically merged with the other Resistance groups. In practice, it retained its independence until the end of the war.
This is a brilliant video creation; the emotion-charged lyrics, Leonard Cohen's enchanting voice, the masterful Spanish guitarist, is here enhanced by the editing and blending of multiple recorded clips taken of several performances, all in ghost-like black-and-white, shadowy style.

50 years ago and this was the 1st song by Leonard Cohen I had ever heard. I was a 14yo dating a 21yo guitarist named Ronny Anson who played lead for a local back up to the stars Miami rock band and well loved by The Ale House. The band was called the Stuck Zipper never did find out why. This talented musician and lover of all things musical made born in me a love for all things Cohen. You showed me how to follow each LC lyric to an unknown place and how the lick of a guitar, mandolin or fiddle would take me swirling into an out of body experience. You taught me that Mr Cohen should be followed for a lifetime for the gift to earth that he is. I am 65yo and still following. I remember all the lyrics to almost all of his songs, still, to date, my heart becomes saturated with an emotion I cannot name upon hearing any one of his songs , the hearing of all of his music you so eagerly shared has never left me, how well you taught me how to see by hearing, and for your owning every Leonard Cohen album yet published, low glow golden lighting in your room with Famous Blue Raincoat playing softly in the backgroimund and the chords twitching your long fingers and the lyrics dancing in your eyes, oh how I was mesmerized by his songs and your love for his genius and you. Thank you Ronnie Anson may your life have been filled with million acts of kindness.
My mothers’ parents were partisans both having escaped first from Falangist Spain then Vichy French concentration camps to join the maquis. As a child she sang me to sleep with songs from the resistance. Songs like this one.

I have loved Leonard and his songs since the 70s. I used to study listening to his music, it relaxed my mind. Today at 71yrs young, still listen to him, but the words have a lot more meaning than we realise. True legend and a genius of sorts.❤
There's something strong in his harmonies. They'v touch my soul all along my life as many souls all over the world. I'm from France and i knew my neibourgh since a long time until i discovered she was a fan of Leonard Cohen too. Here "Suzanne"'s song is even more popular than this song because there's something strong in the music and we feel some kind of strong poetry even if very few people understand the lyrics. I saw Leonard in the 80th at a bad punk festival were they shouted at him not even knowing who he was, he was really in a bad situation. He could stand on some us because he saw some of us who knew his songs. Kept him confident. Fortunatly he had his revival. And this live session is really amazing with these strong musicians.

That's so touching a story ,, so many ppl where so brave then ,if it where now ,,we r lost no heroes left that I can think of ,except those that r no longer with us Blessings to him and all the others ,I had uncles in WW2 and one was only 12 but big 4 age so he lied and joined after he ran away to go defeat Hitler ,, he was presumed dead ,my grandmother had second sight ,she calmly told to soldier that came out to tell her her son was dead, or mia, she told him ,he was gonna b home soon ,they thought she was crazy ,second sight and all but sure nuff about 6 weeks after he was found ,someone was caring for him ,, saved his life he was badly burned ,but grandma had a salve she made my wise granny ,, she was part native American and she told us things should not have known ,,but this was the story we heard most often,, ty 4 sharing and good to meet you my friend
Thanks for sharing this! However, I'm puzzled about the year of his passing - 2017?
I played this for my mum, she was in tears, I didn't mean for that reaction, but she lost 3 uncles fighting for the resistance, another uncle was awarded Legion deHoneurre, again for the resistance

The Partisan.
When they poured across the border
I was cautioned to surrender
This I could not do
I took my gun and vanished.
I have changed my name so often
I've lost my wife and children
But I have many friends
And some of them are with me
An old woman gave us shelter
Kept us hidden in the garret
Then the soldiers came
She died without a whisper
There were three of us this morning
I'm the only one this evening
But I must go on
The frontiers are my prison
Oh, the wind, the wind is blowing
Through the graves the wind is blowing
Freedom soon will come
Then we'll come from the shadows
Les Allemands étaient chez moi
Ils me dirent, "résigne toi"
Mais je n'ai pas peur
J'ai repris mon âme
J'ai changé cent fois de nom
J'ai perdu femme et enfants
Mais j'ai tant d'amis
J'ai la France entière
Un vieil homme dans un grenier
Pour la nuit nous a caché
Les Allemands l'ont pris

Thanks for the heroes of the French resistance. Several people of my family belonged to.

Songs like this one.
........
Spanish partisants? They were probably in CNT. Viva la anarchismo! Viva la CNT!
May God keep them all. Their bravery and sacrifice will never be forgotten
@@zwiazeksyndykalistowpolski9477 CNT no, cualquier español antifascista es un partisano, any Spanish antifascist is a partisan.
Viva la france love from ireland
Merci 👍
ET MOI JE L’ai DÉCOUVERT LORS DE SA MORT. COMME JE LE REGRETTE .
MAIS MAINTENANT Je Me RATTRAPE ET L’ÉCOUTE TRÈS SOUVENT C’EST UNE MERVEILLE UN BONHEUR D’ÉCOUTER UN TEL HOMME . 🕊❤️😂🙏🏽
I'm from France and i knew my neibourgh since a long time until i discovered she was
a fan of Leonard Cohen too.
Here "Suzanne"'s song is even more popular than this song because there's something strong
in the music and we feel some kind of strong poetry even if very few people understand the lyrics.
I saw Leonard in the 80th at a bad punk festival were they shouted at him not even knowing who he was,
he was really in a bad situation. He could stand on some us because he saw some of us who knew
his songs. Kept him confident.
Fortunatly he had his revival. And this live session is really amazing with these strong musicians.
Two years ago , I couldn't imagine my testimony about mister Henri Poirson would have such a huge echo throughout the world . This means an essential thing to me : there are still some people who know what are senses of humility , braveness , humanity . To those who kindly answered to my first comment , be sure you all gave me a wonderful ray of Light . And may this Light bless you all ! From France ,
Cette chanson ne peut etre que AMOUR ET PARTAGE ET ESPOIRS MERCI MONSIEUR COHEN 😍🇫🇷💓🌹💞✌️
Fabuleux, exceptionnel, n'a pris une ride. Quelle voix. Et cette mandoline qui répond. Inoui.
A suberb rendition of his classic song about the resistance. Love the band. That Spanish sounding guitar accompaniment is sublime.
Mandoline
@@pauljacquart5268
In fact it’s a Spanish Bandurria…
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bandurria
In the original recording from Leonard Cohen. The instrument is a mandoline
@@pauljacquart5268 interesting…but we were commenting on the arrangement in the video…as I presume you were when you said Mandolin…which it wasn’t
@@tsb3093 i was comparing the 2 videos but thank you for you remark
Cheers
From one very small village in Macedonia a small batallion of Macedonian Partisans fought off the Germans in WW2 to take back there village. My mum witnessed this as a small girl. This song does some justice to all of those who fought in WW2. God bless all those hero's who fought for there people so they may live a good life on this God given earth. Amen
*YES those fascist NAZI herds used TESTERE on the prisoners there is a photograph just before they hack off his head with tree cutting 3 yard saw & unfortunately its true

I suppose it is not a matter of nationality, but a question of dignity and of following a respectable behaviour, when the risks are so high, the engagement is total, it meets the definition of heroism : putting one's own life on the line to protect your peers.
Anna Marley composed this beautiful song and Leonard did this fantastic cover version.
Merci
This is one of the most beautiful things I've heard in a long, long time. I am simply enamored.
