The bottom line is that this is the perfect argument as to why you have to practice, practice, practice. Whichever weapons you are going to be using, those are the same rifles you need to take to the range. The more you target shoot with your weapons, the more confident you will be and the better shot you will be with those weapons.

Im using 15 grain 22’s and 8 grain 177’s. Zeroed in around 20

I always recommend .177 for air gun beginners, and long time shooters alike. The flatter trajectory is easier for beginners to deal with, less problems with over penetration on small game animals, and being able to use lighter pellets for better energy transfer. You folks across the pond have ft lb limits but here in the states, lots of folks think more is better. After shooting competitively and hunting with air guns for over 20 years, have come to the conclusion that .177 is the best caliber up to 20ft lbs. After that, accuracy decreases and nothing is gained. Anything over 20ft lbs in .22 tends to over penetrate, wasting energy, and pellet deformation is negligible with the heavier pellets. Unless you hare hunting larger animals than rabbits, .177 is the caliber to own. This test was rather crude and inconclusive. Would have been better to just shoot on paper at different distances with both calibers using similar guns and compared groups.

Absolutely think the .177 is a great caliber for springers and PCP air guns . Don’t underestimate its capabilities in both accuracy and at harvesting small game for the table . Even at sub 12 foot pounds of energy with Diabolo pellets it’s lethal . Today with the availability of slugs in countries with less restrictions in FPE , it’s a leap forward for this caliber .

  • @AirGunWeb

Hey there guys.. Having performed similar tests here in the US and having worked with several hundred airguns over the years, respectfully, I would say that the .22 is a better all around choice for small game, especially if wind is going to be an issue. The heavier pellet flies a bit more true over distance in my observations. One of the things that I've learned is how to properly maximize my scope's effectiveness by zeroing it at the optimal zero point based on actual velocity with my chosen pellet, whether in .177 or .22. This way, regardless of caliber, I can always aim dead center and know that I'm going to get a clean kill. I generally work things out on paper using Hawke's chairgun pro, and then I'll prove it out using knock down targets at 15, 25, and 35 yards. If I can aim dead center and activate all 3 without requiring hold over or under, then I'm good to go. One benefit that I have is that I'm shooting 12 FPE+ guns. If I can get a .22 from Air Arms (I already have a .177 and .25) and can set them to 12 FPE, maybe I can run some additional tests just to make sure that I'm correct that it works as well at low power as it does with higher powered airguns.
    With kindest regards,
    Rick at AirgunWeb

I assume this test is more geared towards those in the UK. Do you have any thoughts on 22 vs 25? I'm talking full power US spec guns with 30 to 40 fpe. I personally seem to have better luck with .22 but I prefer the knockdown power of a bigger pellet as I plan on going for medium game like coyotes and smaller hogs.

i dont know but that .22 at 30 miserable yards has droped like a whopper. honestly... i know a lot of people brag that .22 still carries most its energy at 20 - 30 yards but if it drops that much whats the use? instead buy a super magnum .177 and shoot heavy pellets and you'll have small point of impact for more penetration flatter trajectory heavy high fpe at high velocity.

    • @Physics072
      @Physics072 7 років тому +2

A .22 at 30 yards at 950 fps is going to hit 2x harder than a .177 at 30 yards with muzzle of 950fps.
.177 loose energy quicker so out at 30 yards they have slowed more and lost more energy. I think at 500 fps a .177 is a better choice due to its flatter trajectory.
I would choose what ever caliber you can shoot at 900 fps. Many go to a .22 but they drop fps to like 650. I'm talking about a gun powerful enough to shoot a .22 at 900+ which in USA is easy to find.

Try putting a laser on the rifle, on the bench, put a paper target at 35 yards withe the laser centered on the bull, without moving the rifle, mod the same at 25, and 15 yards. Then shoot the air rifle, the pellets should show dead on at 15, high at 25, and dead on again at 35, the paper should be thin enough to let thempelletsmpass with minimal deflection.
The key is making the laser align with the center of the target bulls so you know they are each at the same height.

Not necessarily true for the rest of the world but brittish people made us belive it is the case.
The .22 isnt flying in a curve because "its flying slower" its flying in a curve because the scope/sights are zeroed differently. Neither does the .22 it drop faster it just drops earlier.
If you were put the rifles with barrels perfectly horizontal to the ground and drop a pellet from the same height as the muzzle at the same time a pellet leaves the barrel they would make contact with the ground at the same time. So the reason there is a "curve" is basically because you angle the rifle due to the zeroing of your sights. You are making the projectile arc, not the caliber.
Ita not just sematics - The difference is important because the pellet doesnt determine the speed, the gun does. So when Brittish shooters keep telling the rest of the world ".177 has a flatter trajectory" its not necessarily true at all. A .177 at 950 fps doesnt have a flatter trajectory than a .30 at 1000 fps for example. For pellets, speeds beyond that tend to decrease accuracy so alot of guns can potentially shoot faster but dont.

They are forgetting about the concussion radius. Even if the pellet does not strike the brain head on, there will still be a great amount of damage dealt to the brain (enough damage to kill it) when the pellet strikes near it. Kind of like splash damage or conchoidal fracture.

Looking for help here: I live in a densely populated residential neighborhood in SC, USA. Lots of land are on average about a 1/4 acre, some more some less, and generally lots are separated by wood fencing. That being said, in this neighborhood, some neighbors and I always have felt comfortable taking squirrel out, using 22 BB air rifles. We have all agreed that, so long as the BB’s are aimed above roof lines, no harm no foul. Unlikely that BB’s will fall hard and fast enough to hurt people or property , yeah? Then I recently bought a much more powerful break action .22 pellet air rifle, pushes the pellets several hundred mph faster muzzle velocity compared to the pump action BB gun. Is it still safe to discharge this air gun in the neighborhood, so long as the point of aim is above roof lines? I guess I need to research the legality of this in my town, but to my knowledge there isn’t a prohibition on discharging air rifle pellets in either the town or my home owners association. I’m simply wondering about the ballistic velocity and power of these pellets as they drop to the ground on a missed shot or after total penetration through a squirrel. I would never want to harm people or property. I don’t even know where to find this ballistic data for pellets.

Thanks for this. I wrote an article years ago about the dangers of firing AKs into the air with live rounds at terrorist funerals. My ballistician correspondents looked at the height the bullets would achieve and their momentum as they returned to Earth. They agreed that the modern .556 (a .20-cal round) would usually hurt while the old 7.62 (a .30-cal round) could injure. They agreed that the .22LR would not injure, though one of them pointed to a tragedy in the 1950s when a newspaper reported that a falling .22 bullet killed a child watching a football match after striking him in the head, and the coroner later observed that the child had an unusually soft skull. I couldn't find a reference for that article. Hope this helps. / Charlie

Two items - even a chalk disk probably has enough mass to deflect a .177 pellet traveling at 1000 feet per second. It doesn't take much. If I might suggest, instead of using chalk, try lining up paper targets instead. Once the shot is taken and holes are in the paper, line up the paper to demonstrate. While not as dramatic, it should be easier to demonstrate.
Second, I have a .22 air rifle. Since I'm not limited to 12 foot pounds, and my gun shoots at around 850 feet per second, would it have the same type of flat trajectory as the .177 you speak of?

    • @edgunwestLLC
      @edgunwestLLC 10 років тому +3

...does not apply to FAC guns. If your .22 is throwing a JSB 18.1 at 850 (rifle zeroed at 50 yards) you will have 5.48 inches of drop at 75 yards. Conversely, shooting a .177 8.44 JSB at the same speed, 850 will yield 6.56" of drop at 75 yards when the gun is zeroed at 50. The 18.1 has a better BC and it is most efficient from 830 to 890 FPS. I am still amazed at all the gents in the UK who bag a lot of game from a sub 12 foot pound gun.

kenny cadarett The difference is the power allowed in the US vs the UK. Air rifles are unlimited in the US, so the pellet speed is higher, and ft/lbs impact higher as well. Air rifles in the UK are limited to 12 foot pounds. The .177 pellet is lighter, so can be fired at a higher speed to achieve the 12 ft/lbs, and has a fairly flat trajectory. The .22 is a heavier pellet, so must be fired at a lower speed to stay under the 12 ft/lb legal max. The lower speed translates into more of an arching trajectory than the .177. Math and physics. I wish I understood both a little better.
The .22 in the US will have a flatter trajectory than the .22 in the UK because the US pellet is fired at a higher speed.

      What they are saying is:
Flight time to target requires a constant predetermined amount of elevation. So if you shoot and it takes one second to hit you will have 32 feet of drop split between the rise and fall of the ark of the shoot.

I am only recently getting into high powered air guns from using an old pump-up bb-gun in my youth. So I got a question for the Britt's from "across the pond in the colonies": What exactly is a "12 pound gun"?
I have break-barrel .177 cal pellet rifle that is supposed to shoot at 1000 fps and nothing in the literature that came with it talks about "poundage". would you please be so kind to educate me?

    • @coreyshier7526

Corey Shier does it have to do with being a PCP rifle?

    • @rattytattyratnett
      @rattytattyratnett 8 років тому

+Corey Shier A foot pound is a measure of energy. The reason you will often see reference to 12 foot pounds is because in england firearms regulations state that you need a licence for a gun that produces over 12 foot pounds of energy.

    • @Romans--bo7br
      @Romans--bo7br 8 років тому +1

+Corey Shier..... Corey, they are only referring to the FPE (Foot Pounds of Energy) that the pellet is developing as it leaves the barrel, although "generally" measured at 3 - 4ft from the muzzle, with a Chronograph.. or "Chrony" as we call them.
The formula to figure out how much energy the pellet is generating, "looks" like this.... PW (pellet weight) X (Times) known FPS (feet per second) X FPS = ?? then "squared" by the known FPS again, = ??? Then Divided by the constant denominator of 450240 will = (equal) the FPE for that pellet in YOUR particular gun.
To illustrate an actual example, mathematically... we'll use a commonly used .22 cal. pellet weighing 14.3 gr. (grains) and we "Chronograph" it at (ie:) 765 FPS and we want to know how much energy the pellet is generating... it will look like this on your calculator..... 14.3 X 765 = 10939.5 X 765 = 836871.5 Divided by 450240 = 18.587 FPE. This formula also works for firearm projectiles, and slingshots as well.
Over in "jolly ole England".... the gov't there, in all their infinite "wisdom" has put a "noose" around the neck of air gun enthusiasts over there and they are Not allowed to have airguns capable of generating ANY amount of Energy over 12 FPE..... regardless of caliber, type of airgun power plant and pellets used..... and they actually have "airgun police" as it were... who will periodically "spot check" airguns to make sure they are in conformity with the law.(!!!) : (
These guns are also sometimes know as "sub FAC" guns... the FAC stands for "FireArms Certificate". Having said all that.... it IS "possible" to own an airgun (in the UK) that is capable of more power (FPE).... but, it is necessary to "jump through all the hoops" and obtain a FAC... Fire Arms Certificate, in order to own one... or, at least shoot it.
There are several other EU countries that are "sub 12 fpe" as well as England, as far as I've "heard"... Scotland being very strict (re: Stupid!!) as well..... with their airgun laws..... I think Draconian, would be a fitting term for ANY country with such ridiculous air gun laws.... but, it will probably come "here" some day as well.... enjoy the power while we can.

      2Stroke Diesel Power + More simple: KE = V^2 × M ÷ 450240.
Volocity (in feet per second) x volicity x Mass (in grains) ÷ 450240.
765 × 765 × 14.3 ÷ 450240 = 18.587 foot pounds of kenitic energy/fpe. ...and Thanks! for the specific info, it should be close to my .22 pellets in transit. And the reason the governments are banning all manor of projectile pushers is because it's part of the plan of Conquering them. As in ill-uminatti. As in 'the beast'. .177 can do that too, just depends on the shooter. I've shot coyotes with a 0.177 smooth bore 2 inch steel barrel at 395 fps at 100 yards. It won't kill but you can still hit your target if you properly adjust for drop due to velocity loss over distance. On the other hand, with a 16 inch 0.177 rifled steel barrel at 700-800 fps I've nailed game birds at 150 yards and a chunk of sheet metal at 200 yards. What I like about 0.177 is the accuracy and efficient energy transfer which means a lack of overpenetration yet it will kill vermint with ease within your eyesight view.

Everyone !!.... dump the .177 cal and get .20 cal. It's the best of both worlds.... it has the Fast and Flat trajectory of the .177 cal.. and the near identical impact and wound channel of the .22 cal..... "try it... you'll Love it !"
Yes... I realize that in the US (at least), Weihrauch is about the only manufacturer that you can get the .20 cal.... Virtually None of the "Mass Market" airgun manufacturers, at least none of the "American" branded guns (ie: Ruger, Winchester, Daisy, Crosman, Benjamin, etc, etc.).... nor Gamo or other "off shore" companies, are producing airguns barreled for .20 cal.... and That is a real travesty!!
If we all were email, call... Contact them... and start "hounding them"... to produce a .20 caliber... they just might. In this day and age where manufacturers like to market new products with... " YOU!!!... the customer, demanded it... and we're delivering it" type of rhetoric... it could become reality to have .20 cal airguns, become commonly available for everyone and at an affordable price... the same for the pellet ammo for them.... instead of only being able to acquire them through "high end" brands, like Weihrauch (who produces the high end "Beemans") and a few others.
Since I have owned my first .20 caliber.... I have had NO need for my .177 and .22 cal. air rifles anymore... because, the .20 cal Really is... " the best of both worlds".
The same for my modified Crosman 1377 and 1322 multi-pump pistols / carbine "rifles".... I modified one of my 1322's and replaced the barrel with a custom .20 cal barrel..... I rarely ever shoot the 1377 and 1322's anymore... especially for hunting.... my "1320" handles the squirrels, rabbits and other small game, real well.
Lets all get after the Mass Market airgun manufacturers, and "push them" for .20 and .25 caliber "On the Shelf", air rifles.... they WILL "listen"... if enough of us, "push" them for it.

Why don't you just use paper and put cross hairs on each paper the same height off the ground . start off by putting the paper target with a crosshair on it at the farthest distance first and work your way back Keep the crosshairs of the scope lined up with the cross hair on the paper . The pellet will make a nice clean hold in every paper so you can see where the pellet is hitting next to the crosshairs you don't need chalk that is a stupid way of doing it . With the paper and the crosshairs all lined up the the scopes crosshairs you can even measure how far away the pellet is from the crosshairs . Do your video again but this time with paper .

I know that you are trying to be informative but I have a problem with your video. Yes the .177 shoots flatter than a .22 when you are limited to 12 foot pounds. But for those of us who live in a less restricted country things are different. We can own airguns that shoot heavier .22 pellets a lot faster than you can. I did a little testing.
.177 gamo nitro piston will shoot
crossman destroyer ex 7.9 grain shot 950 fps (at about 4 ft away) 15.84
    foot-pounds
    crossman heavies 10.5 grain shot 791 fps 14,49 foot-pounds
    Hand N Rabit magnums at 15.74 grains shot 548 fps 10.5 foot-pounds
(performance really drops, I think that the tightness in the barrel is a factor here)
Yes the first two will be flat, the las t will be a lob.
    Whereas my marauder .22 shoots:
    cphp 14.3 at 790 fps 19.82 foot-pounds
    jsbs 18.3 at 722 fps 21.19 foot-pounds
jsbs 25.39 at 631 fps 22.45 foot-pounds (all perform similarly)
all of these will be flat
I just don't think .177 guns can produce enough air to propel heavy
pellets with speed. I also just chronied my .25 marauder:
    JSB's 25.39 grain at 829 fps. 38.75 foot-pounds. (I only have one weight
    at this caliber)
Same gun, different caliber, shoots the same weight pellet 200 fps
    faster! It will be flat.
I would need to test this but I bet my .25 marauder flys flatter than either other gun.
It would be nice to see someone shoot some .177's out of a PCP and
comment. It would be interesting to see what a .177 would shoot a 25
grain pellet at, my guess would be around 400 to 500 fps

Remember you do not want any gun to shoot at 1100 fps (Speed of sound) as the shockwave will make it tumble.
So you want 900-1000 range in speed or 1400 + fps in speed.
A .22 at 950 fps is going to dominate a .177 at 950 fps in everything.
But if you can only go 700 fps I would probably go with .177.
