As someone who has been using the farmers dog for over a year and has had wonderful results and massive improvement in my dogs health and well being, this review is a bit frustrating. Dogs tend to wolf food down, meaning they just swallow as much as they can as fast as they can. For us humans it can seem like they are having problems when we hear them but most of the time it is fine. This is how dogs have always ate, he probably didn't eat that way before because he wasn't enjoying the dry dog food. Which brings me to my next point, dogs are supposed to be always hungry, and when your dog finally got real food instead of dried up balls of crap he was probably really loving eating again and wanting to eat all the time like a healthy dog would. I understand it is pricey but your other complaints made no sense to me.

It won't make sense to you because you're not in her shoes and honestly she could have described the story a lot better but if you don't get it you don't get it

And honestly you are wrong a dog isn't supposed to always be hungry and if your dog is always hungry you're doing a shit job as an owner
My dog does get full even on food he does like fact is a dog's stomach is not a bottomless pit... So him crying for more and more food it does mean that that is not feeling the dog up and something would need to be changed at that point because you don't want your dog going hungry
Kind of pisses me off that you practically just admitted you let your dog go hungry

Any time my dogs stomach gets upset I use homeopet digestive upset it’s amazing I get it from chewy it’s rare they get issues but I always have the drops on hand in case. Just if anyone needs help with that ever. Oh! Also for the teeth I use dentalife treats my rescue is old and had nasty teeth and it cleaned off all that plaque pretty quick too! Good luck!

I just cook all my Male German Shepherd’s meals, but I’m retired. I used to feed him raw but the vet said modern dogs don’t have the same digestive tract as they used to have in the wild so I started cooking it, but letting it cool to room temp, or feeding it cold from the fridge if I make it ahead. He had digestive issues since he was a puppy but we finally figured out a couple of things. We switched from all chicken gizzards to mostly chicken breast (I get the cheapest, but it’s still more expensive than gizzards). I always cut up the meat into bite size pieces (huge difference) and we cut out ice cream (we’d get him a Runza hamburger and a cup of ice cream when we’d travel). We switched to lactose free ice cream at home and now, when traveling we get him a Runza grilled chicken sandwich and no ice cream. We give him 1/2 a Metamucil cookie every few days. - the meals: 1). I cut up two chicken breasts, mixed two cans of veggies (rinsed to get some of the salt off) and 1/2 can of chicken gravy….and divide into two servings. 2) one chicken breasts cut up, 1/2 can veggies, 1/2 can pumpkin. We also give him our leftovers and we usually eat chicken and roasted veggies. We basically just give him human food and we don’t eat onions in anything. -- Anyway, all his digestive issues are gone now.

Switching food back and forth is the main reason for the diarrhea and stomach issues. You need to give it time for his digestive system to recover and adjust to the new food. I’m a veterinarian in the United States and I always tell the owners to transition food over several weeks to avoid digestive issues. You might want to try a probiotic to help with his digestive problems.

I had a similar experience. I put my 11 pound Yorkie/chihuahua mix around the same time, April 2020 for about 8 months. He barked at me for food constantly (working from home lol) he was already experiencing undiagnosed endocrine type issues, but I transitioned him to better food, because of the suspected health issues. He didn’t do well on it ULTIMATELY bc of those symptoms but first few months he lost a little bit of excess weight and was noticeably more energetic and willing to go for short walks. He is 14. I still give him fresh food but still let him have little amount of high quality kibble for snacking or as a topping bc he loves his crunchies lol

You add water to reconstitute it and they go crazy for it. So far so good. It’s been about a month. Anyway, it’s a lot easier than home cooked, they love it more, and not as pricey as farmers dog. I actually give my dog a mix of the farmers dog and Carna4 and it is such a smooth transition. You can tell she cares for her pup. My trusted vet recommends Purina & Royal Canin kibble & canned. I feed the higher end Purina. She recommends these two because she says they are the only dog food companies that do the necessary safety testing on their product and seem to use quality ingredients. After seeing many dog food recalls from different brands over the years these are the only dog foods I currently trust. I fed the BARF diet “Bones And Raw Food” for a period of time. Feeding raw meets & bones mostly chicken & turkey backs & necks some beef bones for bones, varied raw meets including liver, heart, organ meats or the “Awful” sparingly. The Barf diet did cause diarrhea often though my Lab/Rot mix liked the diet very much. He’ll eat some veggies especially with peanut butter on them. Fed in a Kong or stuffed toy keeps him busy indoors for awhile. After feeding BARF as a primary diet for awhile I started reducing raw meats not stopping completely & started cooking some of those meats just to done. He’ll do almost anything for cooked meat treats, chicken, beef, beef liver, turkey. He loves cooked liver treats. I give some raw meats mixed with kibble like 3/4 kibble & 1/4 raw in a serving. I’ll also mix canned Purina with kibble at about the same ratio. He will usually only eat what’s offered him till full. There’s almost alway a little kibble left in the bowl at the end of the two feedings a day. I feed approximately 4 cups a day total offered him in his bowl. He maintains a weight of about 90 pounds. I do feed the cooked meats as mostly snacks & he would probably eat as much of that as I’d give him. He has No more diarrhea. I would like to see a higher energy level. He’s 2 years old & maybe it’s his lab/rot mix why he seems to relax a lot in his favorite excavated hole under a tree or one of his 3 favorite in door spots. If he has a dog friend to play with he’ll play till he’s exhausted. Guess I’m just not as exciting. Don’t know if I’ve found the best nutritional diet but I don’t trust offering only processed kibble or canned.

The Farmer's Dog began to offer a DIY Nutrient Mix with recipes (I think this past Spring) so that people could make their own, and I subscribed to it for my three little dogs. I think the recipes are pretty much the same as their subscription dog foods. I religiously followed their recipes, but one of my dogs began to throw up blood. The vet ran a bunch of tests, and the only thing she could find was that my dog has an amylase deficiency, and The Farmer's Dog recipes are really high in carbs. The vet thinks that she wasn't digesting the starches, and it resulted in a bacterial overgrowth in her intestinal tract that began to bleed. Even though we've stopped using The Farmer's Dog recipes, she's continued to have a sensitive stomach. So it might not have been bad batches, but rather how high their food is in carbs. I don't know for sure that is what happened with my dog, and there might have been some other issue. But even after I discontinued the DIY Nutrient Mix recipes from The Farmer's Dog, her digestive issues have continued, even with the addition of digestive enzymes that include amylase. My other two dogs are fine, as far as I can tell. And the one that threw up blood was fine until we started on the DIY Nutrient Mix recipes from The Farmer's Dog. She was two years old when this started.

Omg that is such a cute chi!!!!! I love him ❤️❤️❤️ I haven’t tried farmers dog yet but I’ve tried Ollie and Spot & Tango. One thing I’ve noticed is that most of these brands seem to underestimate daily calories. My assumption is that they’re trying to account for the fact that most people feed their dogs a lot of treats and scraps. But for owners that don’t do that, they might be under feeding their dogs with this brands. It sounds like that may be what happened with you!

Formula changes, gaining too much weight, not filling her up enough etc. Recently I had great success with Stella and Chewys and I was really happy, but I just found out they’ve entered Petco and so likely some formula changes will happen in order to fulfill supply :/ gonna try Primal next and I’ve also been using this Bixbi freeze dried food as well that is quite a bit cheaper. I rehydrate the Stella (in the future primal) to make wet food, and I feed the Bixbi pieces like kibble.

I’ve been doing a lot of research on dog food and I’m so frustrated because I bought the top brands of dog food that were recommended by the vet and then when I did some research and I was reading anything after the word salt is all fake fortified additives unfortunately kibble is cooked on such high temperatures. It actually cooks out all or most of the quality so they have to fortify it with vitamins. I kind a look at it is a box of Cheerios, I’m at the point where I have been using part kibble with some fresh meat and vegetables and fruit. I’ve also found some really good freeze dried and air dried dog food with very few ingredients and preservatives like front box. I’m trying to make my dogs, have a very strong stomach and be able to tolerate different foods and switch it up so I do soft and some things that are crunchy for their teeth. I hope this helps you.

@@mk-qr6si this is one of the recipes I use. It is basically 50% protein, 25% cards and 25% veggies. I found this on youtube:
Vet Approved homemade dog food recipe (This makes about 16 cups)
*I used a 10qt instant pot for this recipe
      Ingredients:
      -5-6 pounds of ground turkey
      -7.5 ounces of pumpkin puree
      -2T coconut oil
      -2 sweet potatoes
-1 1/2C brown rice or white rice
      -7oz of frozen spinach
      - 4 carrots chopped
      -12oz green beans
      -12oz peas
      -2C water
      - 1/3C of beef liver chopped
      -5t of calcium
      optional: 1/4t of turmeric powder
Wash all veggies if using fresh and chop into small chunks. Add sweet potatoes and frozen veggies to instant pot, then rice, frozen spinach, meat, pumpkin puree, water, beef liver, and then ground chicken. Add lid to instant pot and pressure cook for 25-35 minutes on high. When timer goes off let sit for 5 minutes and then do a manual release. use masher gadget to get everything mashed and well mixed! I then add 5t of calcium. It tells you on the back of the calcium bottle how much to add per pound! 5t works perfect for this recipe. Serve to dogs warm so please allow time for it to cool before serving it to your pup! This recipe will last 3-4 days in the fridge. I freeze extras and take out of freezer to thaw the night before as needed. My dogs eat this recipe cold but feel free to heat it up if needed.
Serving size guide for full day of eating : ( This is just a guide! Please consult with your dog's vet to make sure they are getting the perfect serving size)
      3-5 pounds: 1/4cup- 1/3cup
      5-10 pounds: 1/3 cup- 1/2 cup
      10-20 pounds: 1/2 cup- 3/4 cup
      20-30 pounds: 3/4 cup- 1 cup
      40-50 pounds: 1 1/2 cups- 2 cups
      50-60 pounds: 2 cups- 2 1/4 cups
      60-70 pounds: 2 1/4 cups- 2 1/2 cups
      70-80 pounds: 2 1/2 cups- 2 3/4 cups

My Golden Retriever was on kibble since he was a puppy, and we switched to the farmers dog when he was 3.5. Our reasons for changing was his consistent dermatitis, dandruff, pooping a lot and more. Farmers dog did help exponentially. However, it was expensive for his weight (nearly $220 a month). So I took an allergy test for him and identified what irritates his system and custom made his food at home. He gets to eat more, his temperament has improved, he poops less, lost 20lbs and has been great overall. It is tiring making his food, but it has a high reward and his food cost is less than $100 a month, even with inflation.

@@moniemone3518I would highly recommend doing the allergy test. From what I’ve heard and seen, a large portion of dogs allergies come from dog food (kibble). When the season changes, they can face seasonal allergies and their body tends to be put under more pressure causing more breakouts, etc. The allergy test can pinpoint a lot and help you as an owner help your dog out.

Sounds like when they changed the Canadian formula, they did some cost cutting and the new version wasn’t as substantial and filling. That’s why he was crying. Because it wasn’t filling him up. Maybe you could have adde some shredded human grade Turkey or ham to the food to make it more filling. The new formula was probably not the equivalent to humans eating Chinese food. You’re always hungry an hour later. However, I’m sure it was high quality because he loved it so much and because he got really sick when you tried to put him back on regular crappy toxic dog food.
Bottom line? Don’t do ONLY The Farmer’s Dog or ONLY a bland diet. Like I said before. Feed him The Farmer’s Dog but shred up some human grade Turkey or ham and add it to each bowel so it is more filling so he doesn’t feel like he’s starving. That way it won’t end up costing a fortune. That would be a win/win.

Kibble does not clean dogs teeth. You may want to I give your dog raw chicken wing (break/cut apart) once a week, brush his teeth every other night, and give chew bones/sticks. Small breed dogs are notorious for developing bad teeth. As for the food, it was so much happening in 2020, you may have gottten a bad batch, who knows. You may want to try a slow feeding bowl so he can’t gulp his food, that would help with better digestion. Dogs gobble their food and that cause digestion issues big time. Hope things are better since it has been a year ago. Hope this helps.

As in healthy, tasty etc. feeding your dog dry kibble just because of the tartar is very irresponsible because you should be brushing his teeth and taking him for a teeth cleaning once a year anyways. You can’t expect the kibble to do the job for you of cleaning his teeth.

Hands down, the current TV commercial for The Farmer's Dog contains the absolute nastiest audio I've ever heard...and it takes a LOT to disgust me. I've hunted my whole life...I can gut a deer with one hand and eat a bologna sandwich with the other. But, that commercial's soundtrack is HORRID (and I've been a multiple dog owner for most of my life as well). I hope that you can get the problems that your pooch has suffered/suffers ironed out. No dog deserves to have the food it eats cause stomach and/or digestive problems. It sounds to me that there's issues with their product that goes farther than just a dog's "weak stomach." Canines can damn near eat what a goat, or hog, has the ability to stomach. Good luck.

But presented any way other then kibble. Is going to jack the price, for advertising gimmick alone! If you want to feed your dog FRESH healthy food. DO YOUR HOMEWORK! And just buy food from grocery stores. You will be paying extra cash for the "fresh dog food" gimmick. Do some research. Learn the vitamins and protein levels your dog needs. Feeding fresh grocery store food. can be almost as cheap as feeding generic kibble. Just do your homework.
