I don’t have anything to shop for but I have a Volkswagen cabrio that has been sitting in a garage which I don’t know for how long. I’d definitely give it a full restoration and engine swap it including transmission swap to a 2012 Honda Civic.
Yea, that’s why the best tuners like DeMan and Singer use the older version, their a thousand percent more appealing. That blue blob just looks like a pregnant Elephant ready to explode. Never mind the front end of new 911’s, they look like that frog face in Mandalorian series.
As an 84 Targa owner, this video makes me so happy to see these vintage cars being covered. It’s a blast to drive every time and is always a visceral driving feeling.
I currently own a 1960 Porsche 356 and I can confirm nothing beats the old Porsche driving experience. Even with basically no power it’s still smiles for miles! 🤩
I'm 51 and was 16 when the 1986 was new and have the pleasure of driving a few of the "old" air cooled models. Although not the fastest the old one is such a pure sports car driving experience because the feel, sound and yes the smell. Old one please!
The fact that you both like the older 911 based on how it connects with the road and gives you that classic coolness factor shows you guys are true car guys. Yes the new 911 performs better and is more convenient. But it also misses the point of having fun.
Hi from Singapore; great video as usual. I’ll take both please, but a 992 Targa is CAD 542,000 here before options and our form of road tax. Better get saving!
I will take the speed and looks imo of the new one over the old one. Auto targa top and being able to drive wherever whenever is better imo. But I have never really cared for old stuff anyway so what do I know
Oh heck -- no contest the 1986 any day ! Sorry the new Porsches may have more power and luxury -- but the new ones have zero personality and the classic style has been lost -- in fact almost all new cars look the same --- from 20 feet away, the new Porsche could be a Japanese sports car
Dad and I bought a 1980 911 SC. Bought it in pretty rough condition but put lots of hours into it and got it to sing. I miss that car so much, we sold it a couple years ago
Loved the new vs. old comparison! Hope you guys can make more videos like this in the future. Might suggest you guys try to say "the classic" or "the new one" more consistently though... It got a little confusing at times as you were saying "this one/that one", especially when the corresponding footage showed the two of you in the opposite cars to the audio. 😅
My uncle has an '89 Carrera and a '98 Targa--he just fixed up the Carrera after 25 years of it sitting in our driveway and man, does it command respect! Insanely cool car, even more so after all these years!
Oh heck -- no contest the 1986 any day ! Sorry the new Porsches may have more power and luxury -- but the new ones have zero personality and the classic style has been lost -- in fact almost all new cars look the same --- from 20 feet away, the new Porsche could be a Japanese sports car
A good friend of mine who is a 40 years older than me always talks about some of the cars he’s had. One he regrets selling was his 1970 Porsche 911 targa in signal orange, he bought it new. He said none of his friends could keep up with it on the twisty roads back then.
Before even starting this video I came to the conclusion that the 86 would be the more engaging and fun car. Analog cars are always more fun than digital cars. Two mint vintage 911s for the price of one new one is a no-brainer.
I agree with Yuri. I don't get the whole hype on air-cooled 911... doesn't do for me. though... I like the design of them how tiny they are. Great video boys!!
For a fair comparison, put a BMW 3 series from both ages next to each other, and a Mustang and a Golf, etc. ALL cars have got bigger (safety, HP, size inflation - you can get someone to buy a new Golf if it's a bit bigger than the old one, until the Golf is the size of a Passat and the Polo is the size of the Golf - rinse and repeat). The 992 is not really a big car (ran one on the roads of the UK and it's definitely wieldy on the bends).
when I was 7 years old I saw a G body targa and immediately fell in love. I have a boxster S 986 because its what I can afford right now. I frequently window shop for the 80's targa though. I would love to find one some day.
4:06 The sound on the air cooled 3.2 changes dramatically above 4000 RPM or so, and I’ve also noticed that it sounds a lot meaner under load vs. revving it in neutral. It’s like the exhaust note equivalent of a mullet - business cruising the streets, party on the on ramp.
Rode in a 500hp late 70s early 80s 911 that had sooooo much turbo lag. That was 22-24 years ago. I still remember at full boost in 2nd and 3rd gear it felt like the seat was going to break out of the floor because it accelerated so hard. I wasn't even 20 yet and I fell in love with old porsche 911s. Somehow I ended up daily driving an early 90s mercedes wagon and love it but I plan on buying an aircooled porsche soon, after now owning an old aircooled beetle and seeing how simple they are im on the hunt.
Cool video guys! I have a nice yellow 1977 Porsche and I love it. Sorry is not for sale. But if you want to see it or drive it you have to come to Minneapolis Minnesota.
Y'all ought to compare an early C3 Corvette, pre-smog controls, no power steering, no power brakes to a modern C8 version. You would absolutely fall in love with the sound of the 4 barrels opening up, especially if you get a big block, side pipe car! Cheers!
I’m sure someone else has said this, but the heat in the ‘86 comes off the exhaust (if it’s anything like my mom’s ‘75 914). There are basically air tubes around the manifolds, and a little fan pulls the hot air into the cabin when the heater is one.
my daily is an '87 944 Turbo and the most common question on the street is 'what year is that?' but my favorite was this guy who said '87? that was the year i was born. damn they made the coolest shit in 87'
Ignore the Conti wheel recommendations here folks. The Michelin Pilot Sport 4S are the go to 911 tires for everyday and some track. The grip is unreal ;). Otherwise, love the channel and content.
The Pipes were born in '86, I was 33 then. Time flies. Gloss black is the worst, dust and scratches galore. The '86 may not have the exhaust sound but the engine sound is classic, like a giant well-oiled sewing machine.
Don’t have a Porsche for sale but I do have a 1991 Mercedes 300D for sale. It does need a lot of work. It needs a whole new paint job, and it does have a blown head gasket. It still does run and drive too. I’m looking for 2k for it just to get rid of it
There's just something about the '64-89 911 that captured something perfect. So pure and raw but you can't stop progress. Going back to less will just cost you these days.
Hmmm… I have both except that my new 911 in not new anymore - 997.2 C4S cabriolet (manual) which I’ve owned for 10 years. Just can’t sell it. Superb, balanced car. Joy to drive. Ditto ++ my recently acquired 1986 3.2 Turbo body Targa. Learning to drive it properly. Stunning car.
35 yrs old is the PERFECT age guys. I'm totally jealous because at 35 I was living large too, but it was a different time. The '86 is nostalgia and the 2021 is the new ideal. Given my choice, I'd probably take the '86 as well because I always wanted one. Thanks for the video.
Well, if you can find and afford both, that’s the answer 😄 But though the Targa of old is the absolute reference, I personally wouldn’t say it looks better than the new one. The 992 is, in my humble opinion, elegance personified.

@@HiddenFiles thanks for getting the price!

They’re both so beautiful, but I’m gonna have to go with the old one. Just a pure legend and one of my favorite cars. (I’m a sucker for 80s/90s cars)
The sculpt of the old 911s are unbeatable imo. Just can't go with a new 911 just cause of the design.
Anyone saying they want the old one is just posing as a classic lover to seem cultured. We all know anyone sensible takes the new one
@@VaanRavi some people aren’t sensible. I know the new one is better in every way, but I just like the old one.

its still so cool though that Porsche dealers offer it as an upgrade for older models.

Yes, but only in Canadian dollars
