    This is the man to watch. My cord was also broken in the motor and I would not have a clue how to rectify without this video. Now have a new aerial that works. Brilliant Mike!

    So grateful for this video. It was "floppy" like you described and I cleaned out my (NA '93) spool, reassembled and it is working great right now. Now I have to figure out how to use the radio as it is not very intuitive! But it's getting reception and the antenna is going up/down per spec. Thanks so much--more than 10 years after you made video it saved my day.

    I was expecting to replace the entire motor, but your video showed me the problem is just a broken leader wire. Thanks for the info and I will order a new mast from your store.

    Hey great video. I had my antenna replaced a week ago on my 93. I didn't do the replacement. The problem is that the antenna will not go all the way down. It stops about 6 inches from being flush to the car. Thank you

    Hello Sir Stephen,
    When you turn the radio on and off do you hear a whriling sounds from the antenna motor. If not the antenna motor may not be wired up to the radio correctly. The antenna motor has two power leads, one is steady to run the motor the other is the signel from the radio to acctivate the motor. If you do hear sounds from the motor the antenna mast may be broken. Good luck with your mission.
    Mike.

    Mike, I followed you video and successfully changed the broken mast a few years back. Alas, it recently broke again thanks to my inability to fully turn my neck and i backed into (under actually) my brother's pickup! In removing the mast I cannot get the little sleeve off the old mast and it may be damaged anyway. Can I purchase a new sleeve from you? Thanks, and PLEASE keep up the great work. I cannot believe I have owned my '92 since '94. I'd like to have the car (as well as my life!) for another twenty years. Cheers

    Great video! I have a 2003 Miata. The "fishing cable" broke inside the metal tube that holds the electrical connector. Now I can't get the antenna and cable stub out of this tube . The shiny metal sleeve that holds the antenna seems sealed in the in the heavier metal piece.

    Hello,
    I am a proud owner of a Eunos Roadster 92, i will send you a photo. :)
    Your videos have saved me so much money, and in the process gave me a huge amount of confidence in fixing my own car.
    I have a few issues the first is my aerial is permanently up? im not sure if the whole unit is broke? Or if its just not connected up to my stereo as i fitted that myself too.
    it will go up and down a little at the top but no further.
    Any tips would great , thank you again.

    Excellent video! Quick question, any idea which way that washer on top of the reel goes back on?
    I had trouble getting my cover off earlier today, I forced it and the cover came off quickly and the washer went flying, so i didn't get a good look. It's not a flat washer and I'm not sure if the wide face sits against the reel (stopping it from spinning) or if it sits against the plastic cover. Any help would be much appreciated.

      Hello El Green Comet,
      When looking to reinstall a part that flies off, look for the rub marks as to the way it was placed.
      It is a Miata it will tell you how it goes back together. Good luck with your Miata Mission.

      Hello Sir Ken,
      Yes, that is correct. First turn on the radio to cycle the antenna up then have your assistant turn off the radio while you
      install the mast leader into the antenna assembly. Good luck with your Miata Mission.

    What causes the motor to stop? My antenna on a 2004 NB goes up all the way and retracts all the way down. But when it gets to the maximum retraction point you can hear the motor still running and clicking gears then it seems to time out after 20 seconds or so and stops. There does not appear to be any limit switches in the motor casing. How does it know when to stop? Does it sense a motor stall to shut off when going up or down? Thanks.

    • @michaelpaar6673
      @michaelpaar6673 Рік тому

      Hello,
      Thank you for your concerns. On the up it clutches out and breaks circuit. On the down it is timed. 20 seconds seems like to long.
      Maybe it is a fast retractor. We could call it the switch blade antenna. Mike, The King of Miatas.

    Hello Mike, my antenna just stopped going up and down. I first checked to see if I had pwr going to the antenna and I did. I removed the assembly to see if the motor was bad and did some resistance measurements between the ground pin and the other two pins and got "OL" on one side and 14.7k ohms on the other. What do you think could be the problem?

    • @MikesPlaceBiz
      @MikesPlaceBiz  7 років тому

      Hello Sir Manny, Thank you for your concerns. Now that antenna is out of Miata try to power it up with ground and power to see if you can get some life, sound or motion, If not the mast may be stuck. Good Luck with your Miata Mission. Mike. The King of Miatas.

    I got as far as opening the motor up and clearing out the fragments of the lead. I've removed the seal and collar that mount the assembly through the fender panel but the telescoping mast portion is stuck in the assembly. How does that come out, a vise and a strong tug?

    • @MikesPlaceBiz
      @MikesPlaceBiz  10 років тому

      Hello Sir Chris,
      Thank you for your stuck antenna concerns. Yes, a vise and good strong tug is a start. We heard of connecting a slide hammer. Best of luck with your stuck mast Mission.

    King of Miatas,
    I am trying to install a power antenna on my 96 which appears to have never had a power antenna. The electric connection is there in the trunk, but Mazda's site seems to say that I need a fuse block? Could you possibly explain any necessary extra processes to install a power antenna if your car didn't come with one? Thanks so much for all the videos.

    • @RetroGamerr1991
      @RetroGamerr1991 9 років тому

      There are two plugs actually. One attached to the metal bracket on the stock antenna and one along the wire harness farther back in the trunk. The one farther back is the unused plug for the power antenna and the one attached to the bracket of the stock antenna is where the fuse block goes. Two regular 10 amp fuses should work just fine.

      ***** I figured it out back a year ago when I wrote the comment. However, the antenna doesn't go down when I turn the radio off which I am pretty sure was the original intention. Right now it just goes up when I turn the car on and down when I turn it off. Any idea how to fix that?

    • @MikesPlaceBiz
      @MikesPlaceBiz  9 років тому

      Brendan Kruse Hello Sir Brendan,
      You may have a aftermarket radio and the trigger lead is connected to a power on tap not the trigger from the radio. A good stereo shop can help the wire codes so you can connect to the proper lead. Good Luck with your Miata Mission.
      The King of Miatas.
      Mike.

    dear miata king was trying to follow your instruction but the mazda replacement antnna mast I have will only feed up through the sleeve. I cannot push it in from the top as you show.
    I had the same problem getting the old broken mast out as well. it wouldnt pull out from the top, I had to remove the sleeve from the motor / gear cover.
    any suggestion on what im doing wrong?

    • @MikesPlaceBiz

      Hello Sir Tim,
      You may have the wrong year mast. There are two types, 1990 thru 1997 and the 1999 thru 2005.
      Take a look at your part numbers on the package. The King of Miatas. Mike.

    Hey Miata King! My Dad is installing a new 1993 Miata antenna mast, using your instructions.
    He is able to feed the leader into the retractor assembly.
    But when he turns the radio off, it pulls the leader in about 2 inches. Then the leader stops feeding- but the motor keeps running for 5-10 seconds, then shuts off.
    Why is it only taking in a few inches of leader?

    • @MikesPlaceBiz
      @MikesPlaceBiz  5 років тому

      Hello A G
      Sounds like you have a broken leader still in the motor assembly. You will need to take the motor out of the car and apart to fish out the broken leader. Check the video again. Good luck with your Miata Mission. The King of Miatas. Mike.

    Here is an idea or plan. Just get rid of the heavy motor set up and install a bullet antena, not only does it look great, it will save a tiny bit of weight and issues with bent rods.
    If you stay original don't forget to lube your rod now and again.
