By the way, while many of think of this song as an Irish classic, a viewer pointed out it was actually written by Englishman Ewan MacColl. He had a connection with the Pogues - his daughter Kirsty sang on the band's classic Fairytale of New York. How's that for a bit of music trivia?

I'm so glad you did this song. I'd never heard of it and clicked on it just for hoots. I've since spent the last hour and a half falling in love with this song, listening to lots of versions here on UA-cam, reading Wikipedia about Ewan MacColl. It always amazes me when I discover something that's been out there as long as I have (the song and I were both born in 1949) and I don't discover it until I'm 71. Thank you, Mike.

Thanks mate. I’d love to, but there are too many other channels that do traditional mandolin tunes. I want to keep my channel to pop/rock songs. Having said that, the Dropkick Murphys are on my list.

This is a great video, i can do all the picking easily, but damn i struggle with the easy bit, the strumming, i cant for the life of me get the same sound as you, do you start on an up stroke? i cant work out whats going off....thanks for the video
Hey mate. Thanks for watching. Not sure which part you are asking about though. Do you mean strumming the main chords? I start those with a downstroke. I'd suggest practicing with a metronome. That will help. Cheers!
