My Dad once went to see the Pogues at the Apollo in Manchester. He wasn't very well at the time and was on heavy medication. He told me there was this warm up act that all jumped out of a fridge one by one... He thought they was amazing and couldn't stop dancing despite him not being very well. I said... Dad. . I think they were the Pogues.
2002, may have been at the same concert. It was extraordinary. We were near an Irish granny who brought her grandchildren to see this phenomenon. She set up a dancing set and we all joined in, an almost out of body experience. Shane didn’t seem to be too well that night but we so glad to be able to be part of it.
I like that song - Body Of An American - It starts like a lovely old traditional dance tune, then goes a bit mad and finishes gloriously in a fine piece of Irish music - Those memories of the great nights of my young life are rushing back to me in Camden Town - My friend at work told me all about this band called the Pogues - I went to their concerts in London and it was completely exhilarating - The crowd used to be hopping from the front to the back - Oh I loved Shane - I shed quite a few tears when I heard he had died for he was a one off musical genius.
What a fine bunch is well dressed, most respectful and honorable men and lady Caitlín O'Riordan in this band The Pogues were any mother would be very proud to call anyone one of those boys their son and Caitlín a daughter, I believe that the young people of today will learn a lot from those boys and lassie especially the lead singer. and the music, well is swings like heck and the people love it and so do I.
It's very sad when the music ends. Sadder still when the singer runs out of songs Shane McGowan cut his heart and bled out the most beautiful and haunting songs that touched us He will be missed
Oh no doubt! This performance as well as their St. Patrick's Day performance at the Town & Country back in the late 1980's. It's here on UA-cam in its full version and it's absolutely magnificent!! Shane was not of this planet!
Some angel forgot a Pogues cassette in my fathers van in 1987. I was 13. Still stirs up same great emotions. My kids sang this song before Mary had a little lamb
michael king, Yeah, a planet where they can’t sing, their front teeth are made of shoepeg corn, they can fly with their ears, and they just don’t care if their mommas couldn’t love them.

Defintely a Joe Strummer moment and Shane is Shane dont know if both "clashed " so good to hear no soft rock stuff, give me this energy anytime and the band dudes who take simple imstruments, aka a penny whistle and play with gusto and such expertise.
What a lineup!! I would love to have been there. It was only 4 years later when I first visited Ireland and I fell in love with it. Now I'm addicted to The Pogues.
Would be even better if it's possible to correct the video with the sound. Especially now Shane's gone & this is an important part of the history of the Pogues. RIP Shane. xx

This is when the Pogues (as a band) were at their best. A great capture, of a great moment, of a great band, at a legendary event. Proper punk rock Dubliners (even if the live sound man mixed Spider's whistle a bit loud? Lol !) :) U2 weren't too shabby coming on a bit later either?
Studying history of Ireland in the 1930s, blueshirts etc, come across Frank Ryan fighting on the popular front side and the Spanish civil war. And I go ahhhh so thats what shane was writing about back in the 80s in sickbed

Maybe he was more influenced by south of USA mandolin? His own musical heritage. Hard to know, in my opinion, and I am a great Pogues fan and also a mandolinist. Cheers !
One of the funniest concerts trying to get people working within a society that the 99 percent are either gone on drinking or the H addiction. But then to hear Bono saying "I'm gonna get a job in my home town mister". As if someone else was telling him to work somewhere else. Then he moves away after the gigantic earnings each year is mostly going to the Irish government. So much for home rule eh?
