      Best effort by the Popes to carry this one through the end🏆
      Still, I find it surprising that members of the band have hardly a clue to any of the lyrics. Weren’t these guys Pogues fans before they became the Popes or at least during that time.🤔

    I see lots of comments about how wasted Shane is and how he couldn't get through the song properly...but now he's passed on, and none of that matters a damn. He was a big boy who could do what he wanted, if that's who he was then I loved him for it then and I love him for it now.

    Sad to see Shane in this state, one of the most iconic singer songwriters of a generation. I first saw The Pogues in the early 80's. OK this video isn't The Pogues, but the is how we all know and love the man. The last time I saw Shane live was 2012 and he looked and sounded OK considering his demons and health. In that 20 years I must have seen them more than two dozen times, including when the late great Joe Stummer fronted the band and a stint by Spider Stacy, but The Pogues needed MaGowan.

    It's at this point that you know that something more profound, more tragic and desperate is happening with the guy at the mic. He's gone way beyond having a good time and getting wasted with the band... There's lonely, sad drunkenness, and the guy so desperately needed someone, anyone to just say ...stop. 'Stop, Shane, and I'll help you.' Those words could have changed his life forever, but he never seemed to ever hear them. May we all learn something about alcoholism, Shane, and ourselves from watching this mans desperation in public that he lived for so many years. Rest in Peace dear beautiful Shane. We will miss you forever and a day.

      @willferris366 Рік тому +2

      @@jacobfiil5918I absolutely agree..As I just said elsewhere here this band, knowing Shane's habits, should have been familiar enough with the songs to help him out more when he was trying and known the lyrics well enough to perform the songs after he had to leave.. I could have done better in that context just from being a singer and a fan of his writing .. these band members manage nothing but rattling out the notes.. I'm just nearly finished Richard Balls' biography of Shane.. In the light of that it's pretty amazing he even got on the stage over many of his years..I saw him and the Pogues during the late 80s and was never disappointed.. In any event the Pogues would have covered for him better than this..!

    Say what you want about Shane but %95 of the time he was totally professional on stage. He would intentionally wait for the encores to indulge in what have you….So the night before Shane bought some Dutch hash cakes but woke soo hungry he ate the whole thing and didn’t know where he was but only n waves. He said he’d never had something put him in outer space slumber soo hard before. He said he kept getting paranoid about forgetting his own lyrics. That he just wanted off that stage and go home. Instead of all those faces looking up at him. Shane loved weed his entire life and always hade the strongest dope I’ve ever had so this had to be really powerful. Dutch stuff. Love you and miss you comrade Shane OHooligan

      Well,word on the street at the time was,he drank some/to much tea infused with mushrooms. And got totally wasted at the instant he got on stage. I stated before I was there, 18 years old and a huge fan of the Pogues. In fact, it was Shane McGowan and the Popes who were on the venue listed. The band mates took over right away when Shane began slurring and forgot his lines. So there are a lot of stories of what happened that day.

I Love Greenland Whale Fisheries!!!
    But this? Even during the St. Patrick's Day concert from the '80's here on youtube, ...he still remember lyrics! Here? Good LORD, SHANE!!! Seriously, as a teen, I'd have thought what a cool dude Shane is - he doesn't give a shit!! He couldn't care less.

      How do figure? Because he's drunk as a monkey? These songs that he's "singing" are amazing songs! And he wrote most of them himself, but still can't remember any of the lyrics...This is a shameful embarrassment! Man...take a listen to the albums "Red Roses For Me" or "Rum Sodomy and the Lash"...or "If I Should Fall from Grace with God"! Their brilliant albums full of brilliant songs - energetic as all hell!! Bottled fire and brimstone, vulgar and traditional and beautiful and violent and horribly sad and terribly lovely at the same time!
      But this sir, this is NOT fucking great, I'm afraid.

    It’s like he’s so f*cked up that he thinks, in his own head, that he’s doing great….but at the same time, if he is or isn’t, he’s totally oblivious to it, or that there’s any problem….i never did much in the way of pills, or opiates, or narcotics, but I drank like a whale, & I’ve had moments, and I think I’ve been drunk and f*cked up enuf to comprehend this madness…..wow tho, Shane was f’n brilliant, and a trooper…..and yeah, like someone said, they must’ve had HEAVY contractual pressure for the popes to put him onstage like that, I mean, it was his band, I assume he was in total control, unlike the pogues where there was much more democratic opposition to Shane’s whims ….at times anyway.

    • @vincentvancraig

      Ok…I had to read thru the comments to get some inking of what he was on…..Dutch hash cakes, all eaten at once for breakfast? Liquor infused with mushrooms? …..and not pills, or whatever….both of those stories make sense also, of course…..good lord, poor guy, Jesus.

    I just put this on to remind myself of how absolutely and undoubtedly shite they were. My celtic supporting pals played their crap and got drunk, they never ever listened to them sober, ever, you still won't get anyone walking about with ghd pogues on in their earphones for example because they're shite- it's all about claiming you belong to Ireland and letting everyone hear it even though it is shite- the pogues themselves summed up in a sentence.
