  • We picked up this bottle during a run for a couple of Glenfiddich's. The color alone stood out to us and after Mark saw it, he said, "Grab it Drew". Pretty glad we did! We hope you enjoy the review.

    I bought a bottle of this and gave it to my dad's cardiologist as a thank you present. (Paid $115.) He postponed his vacation to check my dad out then realized dad needed a triple bypass. Dad had a very successful surgery and recovery and I'm beyond thankful. The Doc was blown away by the bottle. Bet he'd give it a 3.5 too! Slainte Y'all. Great review as always!

    Nice video you guys, got me to subscribe. I really enjoyed the 17yr balvenie sherry cask, I think I’ll have to pick up a bottle of the 15 now. I remember the 17yr sherry blended really well with their 21yr port wood and the mederia cask as well. Keep up the good work!

    I think most of us start off with Balvenie and this is certainly one of their high points, as long as you don’t get a refill barrel bottle.

    I have a bottle from cask # 7654 & it has some caramel green apple on the nose and palate. Had notes crossed from Tamdhu Batch 2 or 3 and a little Glenfiddich 18 along the way. Really liked it neat best because adding a little water made it nicer on the nose but it made the palate go down hill quick. Really liked this cask # because of the fiddich, Tamdhu, & caramel apple notes for sure!!

    Great review! I love this bottle. We did a first fill/second fill direct comparison once and let me tell you, it was damn close. We did give the edge to the darker liquid, but I have to say that David Stewart and Balvenie do a great job of picking the casks for this.

      Once did a blind taste of this with one of Balvenie's brand ambassadors and we simultaneously looked at each other with questioning looks. Then we looked at the culprit which was a 2nd fill bottle. We both picked out the differences between 1st & 2nd fill on first sip. Glad to hear that you didn't find much difference as it can be rather difficult to find the 1st fills (darker juice), in my experience.

    Cask 8986, bottle 131, picked up today, tasting right now. Love the color. I suspect this bottle may be from a first fill cask, since the color is rather dark and the sherry influence is strong. This is a really good whisky, especially if you like a sherry finish. About 2ml of water added to the dram hits a super sweet spot. I've got a little peppermint happening mid palate, as I type. I love the 21 Portwood, but it could be even more amazing if it were at a higher proof than its 43%. I also like the 12 year first fill. This whisky, at 47.8 proof hits the mark. And for 15 years, its drinks much more mature and full than expected. Salted caramel and burnt brown sugar and cocoa on the nose. Definitely not much fruit on the nose. On the palate it enters silently and then blooms into the flavors on the nose with added toffee, dark fruit, orange and spice. A long spicy finish with the oak and sherry lingering. A fair bit of Cognac character, which I like in a sherry finish. On the flip side, you won't get some of the phenolic complexity you have with something like Springbank 18. To me, its a very good buy. I'm going to pick up a second bottle tomorrow to tuck away! Using your scale, I'm with you at a 3.5/4.

    Sunday Evening Scotch hit it perfectly. You must look at the juice as some are 2nd fill. Looks like you guys got a first fill, lucky. @liquorhound mentioned to look at the color years ago.

      @@thomasbuck303 have you tried Auchentoshan? It's triple-distilled, like Bourbon and other American whiskies. I heard that they started that to make it resemble Irish, which is also triple-distilled. That was to accommodate the large Irish diaspora in the West of Scotland, which is who my people are. My parents' hometown is just over the hill from the distillery.

    @2:47 Andrew said "That's a full butt..." POW!!! I love this dram! As I stated on your Balvenie shootout livestream last month I prefer the Balvenie 15 single barrel over their 17yr Double Wood and the 21yr Portwood. Now, maybe I just happened to get the best cask (#2039) but what are the chances of that?! Plus Balvenie means quality to me, I'd be surprised if there's THAT much of a difference. I can get this all day for $120 here in NorCal, and at a local bar it's $16 a pour! Great review (Andrew your wrong😮) Cheers!!!

    I would give this one a solid 3. There are some cask variations for sure as I have had at least 3 bottles of this stuff. It doesn't beat Glendronach 15 in my mind, but I would have this over a MAC 18 any day of the week. I would love to compare it to the new Tamdhu 15 and the GlenAllichie 15 for sure. Balvenie has been getting a bit pricey these days and the dreaded tariffs do not help as this now a $150 in my area. It is readily available so they do have a good distribution network so there is that...

    With water the whisky became cloudy.....WHAT? it’s called “Scotch Mist” and results from being non-chilled filtered. This is exactly what you want from a quality non-chill filtered scotch. Looks like Scotch 4 Dummies fits.

    Did these guys get a bad bottle? This was the whisky I loved most of all the ones I tried over the last year. Maybe I was just in the mood for a richer, sherried dram, but I found this more elegant than the Glenlivet and Glenmorangie 18s. Other whiskies in the year's lineup include Macallan 12 sherry cask; Glenlivet 14 cognac cask and 15 French Limousin Oak; Glenmorangie 10, Lasanta 12, Quinta Ruban 14, and Nectar D'or 12; Highland Park 18; Glendronach 12; Cragganmore; Oban 14; Lagavulin 16; Balvenie Doublewood 12; Bunnahabhain 12, Bruichladdich. Just got another bottle. Hope it's as good as the last. Finally going to try the Caribbean Cask 14 as well.

    Most expensive 15 on the shelf? Is it twice as good as the Glendronach 12? $30 more than the 15 and Aberlour A’bunadh. Idk, I’ve been underwhelmed by other Balvenies. Not sure I’d be ready to spend $120 before tax on this one.

    • @anthonyodonnell8724
      @anthonyodonnell8724 3 роки тому +1

      Is anything TWICE as good as Glendronach 12? There are diminishing returns with rising prices. However, I'll say that I have a Glendronach 12 in the house, and as a comparison between sherry cask finished whiskies, I'd say the Balvenie 15 is far superior.
