Ben is on the elite category of chess personalities who make me laugh out loud regularly. The line, "he didn't think much of me, because he knew me," was fantastic.
😂😂😂😂 The 1984 reference. Also acceptable is; “That game was so important that it even made the rain turn purple. And then a tiny genius made a big movie about it!”
I really appreciated the critical thinking exercise of trying to break down exactly *why the position is winning*. Rhetorical questions like this are really helpful for me as a newer player and I hadn't considered this frame of reference before. Thanks for the lecture and all of the educational content.
I played in the bill wright stl open last weekend. I was comfortable in all games but lost two. One was because I missed a move that gave decisive counterplay, and the other, i miscalculated a tactic in a crushing position….so I really needed to hear this advice. Thanks GM Ben
After all the videos and practice games and training, training, training, converting a won position is my weakest link. Thank you so much for doing this. It's crucial for people like me.
What I like about Ben is he might make a joke or two, you might even be the punchline in that joke, but he does take you by the hand and make crystal clear the aspect of chess he is teaching - he is a very good chess teacher. Another good thing generally about Ben's videos is you can watch them now, and then 6 months (or more) when you feel you have improved, you can watch them again and there will be nuances that perhaps you didn't catch the first time.
I started watching Ben back when i didnt know what an opening was lol now Im strong like tree and quick like rock! Ty GM Ben for all ur vids and time! Gl all my chess brothers/sisters
I think FM Peter Giannatos said about rooks and bishops of opposite colors endgames that, "It's bishop's of opposite color but rooks of the same color" I always think of this in those positions.
Bit of a pointless lecture here Ben. I'd say most of us here watching are already experts at converting winning positions into completely lost positions. I can even do it blindfolded.
Thanks Ben! The other day i was up +3.5 and i missed an super easy calculation/tactic and lost a piece. I was trying to force an attack instead of just simplify and continue the grind. I was under 10min in a 90+30sec game and my opponent was 600+ my rating. Terrible feeling.
At least, you had the increments. I hate losing against lower rated players because I don't handle the time pressure well at the end if there is no increment. So I try to avoid those time controls, but it is often hard to find an opponent who likes playing slow chess on the internet.
Spot on! In recent days I had three winning positions against guys rated 1500 (I'm barely 1200) and I didn't manage to win or even draw a single one of them...
In practice it is the point that you 'realize' that the game is at the place where you should be able to win it, because only then do you start the 'converting' process.

It is not easy. I often misevaluate a target position. I recently had a strong attack on the kingside and saw a way to transpose to a double rook endgame where my rooks were more active and I had a past pawn in the center and my opponent had a damaged pawn structure on the kingside. I thought I was clearly better, close to winning. (I eventually won, but only after my opponent blundered later in the endgame.) After the game, the machine tells me I had an advantage of +0.1, which is practically equal.
I cannot believe Gurevich didn't solve for that mate. I'm 1500 and was able to solve it without pausing the video in the time it took Ben to tell the story with Gurevich borrowing the sheet the problem was on. Is that Qh4# called the "turtle dove mate"?
I want to pick up that talk from 13:19 to 13:52. That would be a great video Idea: Pick up games from loosing and winning positions that got resigned by their player and convert them, because we are not as good in chess.

"what about the Nh3 smells" 46:28 haha
@Thoi maisnam Hahaha that bit made me laugh so much! By far the his best line ever lol
Ben was so good in 1992 that he could even beat Magnus Carlsen! Magnus was 2 years old at the time, but still.
Frankly, I'm surprised he didn't make that joke in this video ....or perhaps he has already.
Yes definitely still a challenge
He could beat him both in chess and in reality. Go Ben!

Professional version of GM Finegold is still very funny and instructive.

Can't believe I missed you while you were in groningen in 1992. Too bad I wasn't born for another 6 years!
Groeten uit Rotterdam!
Finally a lecture I'm good at. I have been converting winning positions to losing positions since before you were born.
One of Ben’s best lectures imo
Those lectures are awesome, you're too good in this format. Go Ben
Ben Finegold is the 🐐
Been following his chess since before the internet.
So every time I improve in chess and rewatch benji's videos .... it's like a whole new lecture. Thanks Ben .... it's a timeless lecture.
Love those lectures, hope they keep coming
No one watching is so accomplished that this lesson is not only valuable but essential. Thanks for sharing this Ben.

You should teach magnus how to convert losing positions into losses, he's always struggled with that
I thought I was old being in my 30s, and then I watch this video and remember that Ben was slaying at chess before I was even born.
Thanks Ben!
I started listening back a long time ago and just got back into Chess and I’ve only ever been able to learn from Ben!! Keep doing what your doing!!
This is one of my favorite lectures yet
I started watching Ben back when i didnt know what an opening was lol now Im strong like tree and quick like rock! Ty GM Ben for all ur vids and time! Gl all my chess brothers/sisters
Going from "a little fishy" to a little "fishy-Anand" was a great joke.
I think FM Peter Giannatos said about rooks and bishops of opposite colors endgames that, "It's bishop's of opposite color but rooks of the same color" I always think of this in those positions.
Loved it Ben! And the chess too! 😅
Keep it up!🎉
Great lecture. Thank you GM Finegold.
This was a really stellar video
Love it. Thanks Ben
Thanks Anonymous. You da real MVP
How does he not have more followers?
Ben is the BEST!
I guess this one was the most helpful for me. Thanks, Ben!
Just love your sage advice sprinkled with the humor because I don't play competitive chess. What a mensch!
Big fan of these lectures!
Ben is a great lecturer
Great lecture, beautiful games. That rook sacrifice was just plain wonderful, I would have never seen this (but maybe now I would!) Thank, Ben!
Bit of a pointless lecture here Ben. I'd say most of us here watching are already experts at converting winning positions into completely lost positions. I can even do it blindfolded.
Lmao
Duh. If you’re blindfolded, then only your opponent was **actually** watching the lecture. Explains the results.
Terrible
Very well said 👏 👍
Lol I read the First sentence and was confused at first.
very nice lecture, thank you!
Ben’s such a good teacher when he turns it on. More of this!
Nice lecture ,great games and stories. Thanks a lot Ben
thanks gm, very good lesson
26:54 "Always checkmate on f1".
Ben, I think you could shorten that rule to "Always checkmate".
Best endgame against bob fischer! Went Ben!
Best intro music of any chess channel. Good job!
Loving the tips and appreciate that I'm old enough to understand all your jokes.
Great stuff, much needed topic, fun as always
When you said "6 hour game" I realized I have to stop playing chess.
Yay more lectures!
Very funny and instructive.
I love the way you explain things Benjamin. 😉
"There's one game where both of us were winning, but not at the same time" made me spit out my coffee.
Brilliant!

Won't we all?

9.40: "most of you are American?" You underestimate your international audience Ben 🙃
UA-cam tells him what countries his viewers are from and in what proportion. Unless you are using a VPN or something

I'm Canadian so technically in the Americas...but not an American which makes no sense unless you are American

@@AndrewIsbell If it is indeed true that most viewers are American (I said "if"), I am shocked. This sounds unbelievably unlikely.
Chess in 4k resolution! That's what I'm here for :D
LOL 46:26 ok Ben finally got me with one of his dumb jokes. For some reason I died laughing at "and it smells!..."
Next video, "How to convert a losing position", please do it. 😃

Seriously considering doing a video on converting winning positions into losing positions.
Damn, looks like you never did
Another amazing win against Bobby Fischer. Wow!
Is it Ben? Instant like!

Love to see these types of games, Rook sacrifice on H8 is a nice touch.
He offered me a draw on move ten, and since he's German I said "nein!"
And he said "no, it's move ten"
And I said "are you inzehn??"

I'm curious how long it took him to notice these concepts during game play. Did he think for a solid 10 minutes?
Hi Ben I also need to convert my losing positions.
