The gonk droids were sentient because they had built in non-destructive examination sensors in the face and were notorious for getting cranky if the outlets they had to plug into were dirty or even slightly broken. It was so bad some gonks would actually lock their legs down and shut off near said outlet until it was repaired
Sentience is a good way to give something a sense of self-preservation. If gonk droids were as important as stated in the video, then it makes sense that they were created sentient.
On a side note, they had a pair of legs for movement because they were to heavy for the average human to move. They had "sentience" or intelligence so that they could operate their legs. Why legs instead of tracks or wheels? Probably so they could maneuver over uneven terrain while not needing breaks or similar stopping features. Leg activation probably required less power consumption than wheels and breaks and tracks.
@@superdave8248 i love the fact someone rigged more arms and blasters to the gonk. A walking turret. All u need is a higher function AI that of r2 astro, or what class c3p0 is. I think 4or5. Rewrite some functions like cant kill organics, or rewrite organics are breach holes and needs to be fixed. Instead of an ark welder, blaster.

This is what I’m all about
I ascribe to this. Gonks understand their role and find satisfaction helping, especially being able to sit and chat with another droid while the other droid charges.
Lego Star Wars be like:

The GONK droid is one of the only original Kenner action figures that I still have from my childhood collection- I got it when it came out (yes, I’m old) and even though I lost almost my entire collection in a move several years ago, he was in a desk drawer and escaped the unintentional purge.

Undercutting and taking a monopoly on the marked would be an option here. You might lose some money but whey you controll the marked for power droid you can basicaly do what you want. Given the low law barriers in the galaxy put out a shadow update that requires the GONK to have maintanace more often

@@MrPr1nglz Solar generation *is* pretty efficient and becoming even more so but solar panels don't have legs or the ability to follow you around.
Actually it would be quite fun if someone made a walking gonk droid which would act as a powerbank and had expandable solar panels which could fit inside its body.

It's giving life to other things; up to and including other droids. Pretty sure plenty of us would be happy as a metaphorical GONK clam in such a scenario.
Yeah there's like different levels of droid in Star Wars, from simple mechanical arms like we have today, all the way up to full humanoid androids, with droids like R2-D2 and C-3PO being slightly lower. A gonk should be lower than that

Power droids will usually follow any command given to them by anyone. The children of Tatooine would often order them to walk off high ledges just to see how high they'd bounce.
2:00 Depends on how sapient you make the droid. If it is programmed with the temperament and mental capacity as a work dog... It is living it's best life being useful to its owner/pack.

In a tabletop game of Star Wars, set a few months after the battle of Endor, our group rigged up a few Power Droids, placed near a few power generators in a city, to blow up in order to assassinate a politician. We ended up taking a significant percentage of the city.
That's how you know it was a good plan.

we played SW the rpg for many years off and on. because I could, about 20yra ago I decided to play a GNK droid. I loved it. I was just a battery. I actually got a blaster cannon attached to me. I had no crisis I was a deadly sentient weapon. allowing me to hide easily
For real though, those ewoks can be very formidable opponents whether your playing SWBF2 2017 or 2004/5. Both are challenging but fun versions of hunt.
Just saying I literally pray to GNK, not even lying. He is the god above gods, the droid that created the very fiber of our beings today. So Support the GNK and the the cult of the power droids.

It would be really useful to have a walking battery. The battery looks very heavy. I choose to believe that the Gonk droids are a proud type of droid that felt very useful, being able to help others. Your view is very pessimistic.

I always thought of droids as the following: factory new droids are NOT "self-aware". However, they have such sophisticated software and hardware by our human, Terran standards that if you leave them alone for long enough, and with no memory wipes, they can become self-aware.
This has always been my understanding too

I had the kenner 'Power Droid' figure when I was a kid. I didnt have a lot of Star Wars stuff because it was expensive. The ones I got for birthdays and Christmas probably werent the ones on mine or every kids wish list, but it didn't matter. I also had a Tie Fighter, a Y-wing and a Kenner 'Hammerhead' figure and that was it. I played with them almost every day.
I have always wondered their purpose. Thank you for explaining it in good detail.

No crisis needed. Programming that gives them 'joy' to power things up would make them very happy to do their job. Also explains sentience- gives them the ability to seek out and recognize need for their service.

Imagine a GNK Power Droid, a BB unit droid and a BD unit droid working together.
Well, I made up 3 droid characters that I made up that are those types of droids.
First, I will start with my GNK droid OC.
His droid number/name is EG-70, or if you account to the fact that G is the 7th letter of the alphabet, his nickname is EGG , for like an egg, if he is cracked open, he will cause a major situation. Masculine Programing, a Tan Green color, and a speedy personality, EG-70 is ready to help recharge any of his fellow droids, and yes, he dose have a manipulator arm, but he also has a secret Scomp link so he can collect data and he also has a projector, but other then those two special features, he is just your regular GNK droid.
Next is my BB unit OC.
His droid number and name is CB-6C, and he is purple, White, and Black. Head Black and white, body is White and Purple, and he has a Flat Dome style of head. And he is real because I actually have him in real life. I got him from Droid Depot ( Built him their also ) at Galaxy’s Edge in Disneyland, Anaheim, California. I live in California so, Yea. CB-6C is a kind friendly droid with all the tools a BB unit has. Scomp Link, Flame Lighter, and a taser, and a grappling hook.
Finally, their is the BD unit OC. My newest OC and the one I just made up. Her name/number is BD-6, and she is the fastest of the three. Blue, white and Grey with two antenna on her right, your left, of her head above her vision sensor which is next to projector. BD-6 likes to pull funny jokes on the other two droids and is fast enough to get away. She has the basic tools a BD unit has.
That is all. Anyways, do you have Droid OC’s?

Making them droids makes perfect sense. That way you dont have to keep track of when to power what, it does that on its own. And the extra generstor space you would free up by removing the processor is negligable, just look how small the head of a b1 is, and now see how much dumber than even them a gonk droid is, the processor would be tiny.

As someone who worked on mobile power generators and starting units for aircraft, I see the GNK and PNK droids as the Star Wars equivalent of ground support equipment.
