***** About Living Traditions Homestead *****
Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out new videos every week! We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.

Hello Sarah and Kevin. I raised hundreds of Standard Toulouse geese and had a large Sears red wood wet hatch incubator. My geese started laying in mid February at one year old. I put a magic marker dot on the first one and left the first one in the nest. Mine did lay in a cushy hay nest they rearranged. They lay every other day. Then I started collecting them in a cool place, covered by a damp towel. When I had enough, I wrote the date on the side of the eggs. 28 days for a hatch. I hand turned the eggs twice a day ( dates up > dates down, so I knew I had turned them. The goslings have an egg tooth and will start tapping on the large end on the 26th day. If I gently tap on the shell and say, "VEE!" They will answer and start tapping like crazy! Pretty cool. They will bond to you when hatched. Make sure you candle them up to two weeks. A bad egg can explode in the incubator. Best of luck. ~ Diane
Thank you SO much for sharing this information! I have Geese that should start laying soon. Wonderful information! GOD bless
@ritamcartt-korton283- You are welcome. I really enjoyed raising geese. Another tip. They do not see well after dark. Be sure to get them inside, as they will just plunk themselves down and be a target for predators. Mine mated for life and protected other goslings in the group. Have fun! ~ Diane
the country of Poland, deserve the Nobel peace prize for helping their neighbor. Glad you picked up chicks home safe!
So much fun watching the ducks and geese run with their wings flapping! I've missed that.
You should check out Cog hill farm and how he did his berry bushes on a trellis system and dedicated vines or shoots. It's awesome and the maintenance and harvesting is so easy.
Those little chicks are so cute. Kevin gave you a wonderful Valentine’s Day present.
I don't recommend weed fabric around grapes and berries. I did this in texas and regretted it because the grass grows right up through and the little sucker plants have a hard time growing. the grass won't hurt them; you can put a tin can around the base of the grapes if you want to weed eat around them for asthetics
I agree. Once the grapes become established and are tall enough, pasture the geese in them. Wait until the vines are thick enough the geese can't chew them to pieces.
I LOVE the look of the raised bed garden. Really beautiful!
A tin can? What a good idea!
@@darlajohnson2020may be a split section of 4" Pvc pipe would work too.
I would have a 3 foot break in the middle of the berry lines so that you don't have to walk all the way to the end to get to another row.... :)
Great idea!
The best thing we ever did was plant a row of blueberries over 30 years ago. We get tons and some for the neighbors. It was only 10 plants but they spread underground and sent up more shoots.
I had White Chinese geese years ago and they were never aggressive toward me but would chase my teenage sons. The gander was better about that after I gave him a soccer ball to play with. When they started laying eggs, it was always in the corner of their shelter and they covered them with bedding.
Consider growing some elderberries also
You guys are awesome week after week we share morning coffee time ❤
I can't wait for these babies to grow up and show off their goofy cuteness!!!
Kevin, I’m begging you lol , do an updated storm, shelter video 👍🏻
🌪 Tornadoes will be coming soon
As you know, ticks love berry bushes. Chickens like to eat ticks. Could you let your chickens into the orchard area occasionally to clean up the area or are there too many hawks and owls?
Adding straw will induce the geese to build a nest. They need lots of it to build it up nice and big. Shavings won't cut it for a goose nest.
Fun video to watch. I think we’re all starting to dream of spring. God Bless!
Either paint your fruit tree trunks white or put the white wrap around them. That will cool down the tree sap and keep them from flowering before it really gets warm. I don't know what type of paint but here in apple country in the Central Washington State we do this for our fruit trees.
Your little Waddlesville area is ADORABLE....! Your farm is SO PRODUCTIVE and SO ORGANIZED...! The new chicks are SO CUTE and a GOOD ADDITION to the farm...! I can't wait to see how your NEW GARDEN area works out ...! Thank YOU for letting us tag along with you today...! ❤🐔❤ Shelly
Great to see the upgrades and getting ready for spring.
Always seems to come like a speeding train , always gets there quicker than you think.
Always seems like gardening, you have everything planned out, then bang, your 2-3 weeks behind.
Anyway guys, looks like ya'll are getting things in hand, ready to go.
Kevin, chiggers love me as well. When I know I'm going to be at risk, the clothes I'm going to wear all get soaked or sprayed down heavy with Pine Sol, it really seems to help.
Good luck guys, keep an eye on the clock, it always runs faster when you get a little behind.
God bless ya'll and stay safe out there on the homestead. You don't need any delays.
I was told red raspberry and black berry bushes shouldn’t be near each other because of cross pollination
Great job everyone and the new Silkies are going to be a lot of fun to watch. Stay safe and hope the geese start laying eggs for you . Fred.
❤ I love baby chicks! They remind me of my childhood in Puerto Rico! Just the cutest things you can see!❤❤😊
My geese laid their eggs at all hours And they hid their nests, or tried to. At one point they were even laying along the edge of the water in our pond. And like others you have heard from, some of my geese began laying at around a year of age. I've had them lay in the Spring and all through the Summer. I have new geese now, (an Eagle took my female Toulouse 🥵) I have African Grey Geese now and they are young so it will be fun to see when they begin to lay. I got these geese as 2 week old goslings just before Thanksgiving last year, 2023, from a lady a few miles from me. She was shocked that her goose was laying in November.
Good afternoon from Ireland. Will you be growing your fruit on a fence the same way Jason from Cog Hill Farm? His do very well.
Cuteness overload baby chicks 🐤
Enjoyable video! Well done. The fruit trees look great.
Nice hawk flying by at the 50 sec mark !
I love watching new chicks settle in . We will be getting meat chicks soon, so excited
Love you guys so much!! It's always a joy to watch you out and about on your land showing us how things are going. Thank you
God bless
Thank you for straightening the sign on the gate! It was driving me nuts!🤣 God bless!
Me too! Lol
Didn't even notice. 😮
Thank you Kevin & Sarah. Prayers. God Bless you all in Love. Maranatha ! ( shared to f/b )
We notice in the first of the video you had an eagle in the background. Here they are hard on yard birds.
Sarah, I have one Crested Polish that I got from a neighbor last year. I named her Tina (Tina Turner) and I call her TT. She is The funniest chicken and is Always so happy to see me whenever I am outside.
Kevin what a great gift for your wife ❤😊❤
I’ve heard that you have to put raspberries and black berries 100 ft apart to prevent cross pollination. Might be worth checking out
No,just row apart is fine.
Just keep different varieties of raspberries apart because they will cross pollinate, red , black, and gold. Blackberries and raspberries don’t
I had heard that they don’t make good companions due to their different soil needs, thriving typically in different pH. Planted together in the same type soil, it wouldn’t surprise me if one grew better than the other.
Most breeds of geese start laying around 9 months starting in spring season. However, fertility rates in young geese tend to be low not much above 20% in their first year. Geese mature around two years old and from 2-4 years old are their best laying and fertility years. Laying and fertility drop off significantly after year 5 even though geese generally live 10-15 years and longer in some cases. Commercially we cull our flocks at the beginning of year 5 unless they are a rare species or a species that is difficult to reproduce. Good luck!
Kevin and Sarah thanks for sharing giving us the updates about some things happening on the farm 😞 continued prayers peace and blessings 🙏
My husband has Alpha Gal.. We have 1.2 acres and most of it is woods. Luckily he is not super reactive. As long as he stays away from the meat he is okay. He still eats cheese and is not fume reactive. Missouri and Kentucky are in the top 5 states with Alpha Gal victims.
They start laying around 9months old. From April until September. Give them more protein if they don’t start laying soon. May wanna worm them with daematcious earth food grade or Cayenne pepper. Best of luck!!
In two shots, there was a large hawk or eagle checking out waddlesville, you probably saw it, but might contribute to some of the noise.
Stefano Creatini did a video on youtube about a gentleman growing in the high desert of Colorado and he has amazing grapes, he says the plants, grape vines don't like the metal structures for support. He uses wooden structures for support. He says the metal gets hot and the plants vines do not like the hot metal. If you get time I would watch his video! "Permaculture garden in the high desert"
Thank you from The Netherlands
00:48 .... looks like a Bald Eagle flying from right to left on the screen?
Mine laid at a year old last year, so last year's should lay this year ...usually start mid February
We have 11 of the white Chinese. One male is 2 years old. Only survivor of 12 mixed types. Last spring we got 10 more of the white Chinese. They started laying about 3 weeks ago. getting 1-5 eggs per day.. Have not found any of them to be aggressive. They seam to be some what curious if you stay in the pen for a while. We have tried to pet them but they run off when we do, at least for now.
Get a couple of goats. They cut grass very well
Sheep more than goats.
I remember my Mom and stepdad planted 6 tame blackberry plants in a small bed about 15 feet long and provided a simple wire fence for them to climb and run. They tied the branches as they grew to the fence. The first year was ok productive and after pruning at the right time, the second year provided 26 gallons of blackberries! And they have exploded from there. Unless you plan to sell the berries, I would limit the plants. They are prolific. And I agree about the chiggers. The tame blackberries with their lack of thorns and open growing to not encourage chiggers, they are great! It's nice to pick gallons of the wonderful very big berries without scratching your skin raw from chiggers as a result.
When the geese are close to laying even the females will lower their heads and walk toward you while hissing. The males, no matter how friendly they are to you now, will get aggressive. Hold your ground and walk toward them just talking to them. They will, hopefully, walk away. Watch your back though. Provide a nest of deep hay in their coop area. They will like a clean area for laying eggs, although their dirty feet will dirty the eggs. They bury their eggs under the hay so you’ll have to dig through the hay around the nest area.
Hello from Georgia. Those baby chick are so cute; can't wait to see them grow up. Thanks again for sharing your adventures with us; stay well.
can't hear him but can hear her better, just wanted you to know that. love watching.
I used to have Sebastapol geese and they liked to lay in the water. Don't forget to check the pool for goose eggs.
Two wild blackberry species. Native blackberries have thin and reddish stalks. Invasive Himalayan blackberries are the finger-thick, green stalks. Any other native raspberries are either first-year growth or second-year growth canes. One needs to understand one's canes and fruiting production on the canes - for annual pruning out the non-fruiting canes.
Easy to clip any length of wild raspberries and blackberries, and lay down in the ground (like sugar cane) 2-3 nodes. They will rapidly form their own rootings. There is no need for rootone hormones, as canes buried in the ground (even having a node and leaf near any wet surface ground will readily root themselves. One can easily start the cuttings in the growhouse with damp potting soil, and then transplant the largely-rooted canes into the vineyard.
Don't blame you for not wanting to pick wild berries with all of the ticks! Where we are in Oregon lyme disease is carried by ticks...a very serious infection as well.
...oh, and the baby chicks are adorable!😊
Those chicks are the cutest 🤩🤩
I live not too far from you in Illinois near St. Louis. Watching your video this morning, Saturday, when you posted it looking out my window with the 4 inches of snow we got yesterday I had to chuckle because I know that you are likely experiencing the same yo-yo weather we are. Yesterday morning it was nice and clear then the heavy snow came giving us about 4 inches of snow. Good thing you kept the baby chicks in the house for a few days. I always enjoy your videos. 💕💕
We love our raspberries. Fabulous fresh and then all winter from the freezer. Next time I will add some golden raspberries so I have berries later in the season also since they are fall bearing.
Our wild berries grow beautifully where I live and I love picking some every year. Last year I didn't get to them in time because not only are you at the mercy of mother nature but you are also at the mercy to all the birds. Lol. I'm hoping I can get to them this year before the birds have their feast.
I saw two hawks fly over Waddlesville on this episode, Might watch the silkies. just sayen.
Good Morning from snow covered east central Indiana, Brrr
Love the baby chick's. Soo cute
Good morning! You guys are taking advantage of the warm weather, and I took advantage of the cool weather to get my stuff done. It only took me a few years to learn that laziness leads to gardening in the heat. 😆 So, this year, I worked on my garden a little at a time, and got all of the heavy work done, before the spring heat sets in. I already have a few seeds in the ground, and the Lord has sent rain for us this weekend. So now, I can sit back, relax for a couple of days, and enjoy these fruits of my labor.
I agree, duck eggs over chicken eggs...love your shows!
We have American Buff Geese. Last year, our geese laid eggs at one year old. Now that they are older, we currently have 7 geese eggs in Feb. Hoping for goslings!
Geese are goog watchdogs when they got noisy and you checked for eggs possibly they noticed the raptor that showed up at .51 and 5.37 in the video , just if you missed it. Precautions to be taken.
So exciting to look forward to so much interesting new things.
One thing to know about blackberries and raspberries they will send out underground runners just like the wild ones do.
My son-in-law got a tick bite that caused him to be severly ill and he found out the hard way that not only is he allergic to red meat (including wild game) but also sea food....he has to carry an epi pen with him at all times in case he accidently eats something at a restaurant that is cross contaminated. that has happened several times and one time he almost died from the allergic reaction. So it is not something to be taken lightly....they live in Oklahoma and ticks are a huge problem there too...along with chiggers
I love Waddlesville!!!!
Raspberries need to be able to plow around them to control the spread of the runners. Our raspberries are all over our yard because we have no way to control them in our small yard. Just warning
Up here in Iowa,(council bluffs area)I drank buttermilk and I also eat alot of pickled foods( pickles, saurkraut), and I haven't had any issues with ticks or chiggers, maybe that will help?
The chick's are soon cuute!!!😊❤
I would love to watch you prune the trees
Wow those silkies are fast runners!
My daughter ordered some Polish chickens late last summer. They are very pretty, especially the roosters when grown and it may be because we handled them a lot while they were growing. but they are the calmest chickens in the lot. A head's up though, they are flyers and like to roost high. We have never clipped their wings so that probably would help but every night we have to remove the Polish off the 8 ft. gate and shoo or carry them to the chicken house. They go in easy enough, but it is a every night thing. I am sure you will enjoy your new chicks.
Good Morning from Mississippi
Was an interesting video to watch. Hope the Geese lay eggs soon for you. Greetings from South Africa. Hot and dry here middle of Summer. Autume starts 21st March which you call Fall. Hope you have a great week.
When you choose your blackberry plants, I grew them between two rows of t-posts 3’ wide with coated single-strand clothesline wire. They fruit on last years canes, so as the new cane grow, I loosely tie them with twine to one side. The following year I tie the new canes to the opposite side. After the berries are harvested, you will easily know which canes to cut back to the crown.
Raspberries are a little different and you will gain good insight from Stark Bro’s.
Been great watching y’all “grow” year after year!
I just love your channel and I have been here for a minute or two. (smile)
We are expecting a double batch of cicadas this year so you may want to think of some sort of protection for your young fruit trees.
How far is town? Perhaps you should get a little rake to find the eggs.
They are so precious!
Good morning from Missouri! Thanks for sharing your info and tricks of the trade. Blessings!
It is going to be in the 40’s and a couple days in the 50’s in the next 10 days here in north central South Dakota! We have had very unusual weather up here!
We have a 'return to Winter' over the next few days with temps dipping into the teens. Supposed to start warming up in 8 days
I've been using a binder clip to hold down the bug deflector shield on my vehicle where the adhesive came loose on one side. That thing was flapping against the hood at 75mph, and I needed to MacGyver a fix until I take it in to be reinstalled correctly. It's been working so far! I love a good and cheap solution; so I giggled seeing your binder clips!
Love your whole Waddlesville area. If the new raspberries and blackberries send up suckers like wild ones, you'll get way more free plants if you allow the room for them to do so. The best blueberry picking farm I've even seen was in Wisconsin at Rush River Produce, not far from the St. Croix river near Lake Pepin. If you ever get "home", try to visit and see their amazing set up. I remember paying per pound and they don't care if you eat blueberries the whole time either! They also grow some currents and have a picnic area if you pack a lunch. The clematis growing up the barns is gorgeous and flower beds with creative art is fun too. Get there early, they have limited parking. They water regularly, mulch, weed fabric and use predator bird calls on speaker to keep the smaller birds away. They have a website. I cant wait to see your project in full production mode! 💜
Your new babies are so cute. Can't wait to see them running around with the Silkies! Have an amazing weekend.
I just can't believe I've been following u guys for so long! I remember when u installed the chicken run years ago. It's been a great journey!! Ty for sharing
I had Tolouse, African, Emden cross trios & 1 lone Chinese lady & a Canadian drake who moved in... They were so sweet to me, laid heads against my leg or in my lap - didnt care for others & only aggressive to strangers. I ran them with my layer chicken (fancy colors) & ducks even my pot bellied pigs & wether goat in large area about like urs. Didn't have trouble with predators or snakes
It looks like you came up with a good solution to hold the weed cover on the raised beds. If you ever need to attach a cover to something that is thicker than the raised bed side, Amazon sells what they call towel holders to hold your towel to your beach chair. They work really well.
A+ Enjoyed the walk around / (!!) Stay out of the woods during Tick Season (!!) Good thing for everybody to be told about ....
Those chicks are so cute!!!
Awesome video and Kevin done good for valentine's day!
When I was a kid I had white crested black polish chikens and I found the rooster was very aggressive, perhaps too aggressive for some.
The geese are beautiful. Next time you process ducks can you bring us along? I’d love to learn.
Raspberries can be planted closer than 4 ft apart. They will spread quite a bit as the years go by.
Time sure does fly... four years ago you put up the double fence? I was watching well before that! I remember one of the first I watched was a potato harvest in raised beds on the former homestead. You considered the crop a failure.
My father was born and raised on 40 acres outside of Osceola, MO. He said they raised rocks! The story of how they delivered the cash crop of strawberries to the nearby small-town stores was an eye-opener. At the bottom of each hill, Grandpa had to turn the truck around to back up the hill... that was way before the days of fuel pumps!
The store owners would put out a sign for Fresh Strawberries, because the strawberries were stored in the cool basements.
Loved this episode.
Offer your geese several locations of hay piles to use as a nesting location. Including a spot in the overnight shelter.
Those chicks are so cute. Hope you get goose eggs soon
I wonder if wild birds 🦅 will fly in and eat up 🆙 all the berries and grapes 🍇 just a question we’ll good luck 🍀
