I built an AR15 chambered in 762x39. I did so much research for the build and it was really fun. My parts providers were: Duramag, Faxon, Black Rifle Arms, and Aero Precision. It turned out great. I only fire brass in it. I buy ammo in the 60 to 80 cent range which similar to my 556/223. Originally, my mindset was plink with cheap x39 steel, but turns out it is hard to cycle that stuff reliably in mid gas barrel. The Tula I found were underpowered compared to brass, so I got some short stroking and FTF. Also, my range said no steel. My 762x39 build was roughly $1200 and just as reliable as my 556/223 and 300b/o
I like that Sig made quite a few changes to the bolt with this rifle to increase reliability. They didn't just slightly modify an ar-15 or ar-10 bolt and just call it a day.
They increased the extraction reliability. Hammer, firing pin, and fire control group springs to effectively fire berdan primers. The hog out bolt with weaker support between the bolt lugs could prove to be problematic as 7.62x39 ARs prone to lug failures.
I went to their store in NH and asked them this exact question and they affirmed they reinforced it and proceeded to disassemble it and show me. After visiting their store I'm more of a fan boy now.
I agree. I’ve broken bolt lugs off AR bolt heads in 7.62x39. I’ll be pleasantly surprised if this platform doesn’t do the same thing since the bolt dimensions are the same
PSA all day! I have my 10" KS47 grouping 3/4 at 100yds. put an adjust able gas block on it and upgraded recoil spring for less than $150 and it a softer shooter than the Sig. Then dropped a roller cam pin from POF just $40 more and it's silky smooth.... And I still didn't pay more than $1,000. I'll take 2 KS47's to that fancy Sig. But I know Mac Loves some PSA so..... He'll be good with it.
I had a 762x39 AR15 and LUV’D IT. I will never go back in an AR platform, because the bolt face was destroyed after approximately 2k rounds. Same reason for not shooting 6.5 Grendel, the material holding the locking lugs I’d almost paper thin…. Not good.

Some people are just too lazy to do the research to make the gun run dependably for a self built x39 AR. Tim just addressed several main points that were eliminated in Sigs new gun. Dependable mags, triggers tht are able to handle hard primers, and bolt faces that were built around the caliber are a few. I've built a few and with attention to detail and the right parts, you can pull it off. Now, thts not me saying my builds "are just as good." I've got the other guns to run but I still have a little feeding issues and because the PWS never has issues thats what I tend to grab. MAC, I’d love to hear your take on Foxtrot Mike’s new FM-47. It’s essentially an AR-15 with an AK mag compatible AR lower and MP5-style charging handle.
Actually what will be ideal for military use is a new "6.8 Grendel" that utilizes the identical .277 Fury AP projectile. Hope to see it soon along with the new cartridges.
Why? Just look up individual videos for those rifles. The Galil is literally an AK. Bren is a FN SCAR knockoff. XCR is AK gas system and highly modified AK based bolt design. The CMMG is based on the AR10 bolt carrier group. And the PTR32 is roller delayed blowback.

The way I see it is the Spear LT and the Radler LT will be for special forces, which will leave the Sig Raptor and XM7 with smart optic for the frontline soldiers. Technologically speaking the split was inevitable considering the 55.6 just can’t handle the needs of these two specialized groups in the modern day. The 6.8 Fury and the 300 Blackout are by far the most appropriate calibers for the times.
Thanks for sharing and making these videos, always appreciate it. This rifle looks great. I think it is really important to note that the military contracts for modern (possibly AR-18) based rifles in 7.62x39 is not just limited to the middle east. The French GIGN use CZ BREN 806 (Bren 2) rifles in 7.62x39 for counter terrorism work, presumably because of the effectiveness of the cartridge and the ability to leave a foreign signature on target. I just thought this was important to note because a SPEAR LT in 7.62 is entirely viable for similar contracts in Europe or other western nations' militaries.

Anyone using the ak platform is probably considering upgrading to this I’d imagine to cut down on weight, ergonomics and customization. This is a game changer weapon in my opinion. Yes this platform has been done by other companies but this is like what POF did in revolutionizing the 308 ar10, now every company will make light weight ak 15s platforms now (16 inch), let the race begin. Also whoever creates the ak mag lower combo best will probably get a huge chunk of the market.

with 2 other large company's having made (CMMG, PSA) AR's that are reliable and take ak mags , combined with the availability/affordability of ak mags and the historical unreliability of 7.62x39 ar mags, Sig made a huge mistake by not spending a little bit to slightly redesign the lower to accept ak mags. I think that will severely hamper the sale of this rifle in 7.62x39
Yeah in that budget you could buy a PSA KS-47 with all the accessories in the world + mags + ammo. I feel like it only makes sense to have a 7.62x39 that takes actual AK mags.
@@Enjoyer.762 The 1st gens were baaad. They've improved them since. Enhanced pin, better trigger spring, and better magazine compatibility. The thing that sucks about straight AKs is modernizing them. Usually a pain in the butt and have to do a lot of bench work.
+1 And let's assume for a moment that it is trustworthy... why would anyone want a 7.62x39 rifle that can't take advantage of common, readily available AK magazines?
@@Cheeseybacun because there are people in this world who can actually afford 30 dollar mags, and also people who want firearms to progress beyond 1940s tech that artificially limits the rifle.
@@walker123qwe5 already met it. It's essentially a milled AK with some MLOK and a railed top cover. Milspec bren2s/ properly regulated bren2s blow it completely out of the water. The bren2 comes in at almost half the weight, the same effectiveness, better ergonomics, actual modularity, and is a more dynamically usable gun. Don't get me wrong the ACE is perfectly good. In fact, it's the best AK mag fed gun that's readily available. But modern designs bring way more to the table, and they shouldn't be using AK mags as AK mags would force them to sacrifice a ton of modularity. TL:DR version, AK mags in guns like galile ACE= perfectly good combination and a great option for those who want AK mags. AK mags in modern, modular guns like bren2, ACR, and MCX= bad combination.
I disagree. Been running several AK rifles and pistols for years and the worst con for the whole platform is weight. Everything from the full size rifles, pistols, and especially the magazines weigh too much in comparison to an AR. The magazines are also too big and bulky to carry. I prefer shooting 7.62x39 and 6.5 Grendel over 5.56 and 300 BO so if Sig offers the MCX in both 7.62x39 and 6.5 Grendel then I'm sold. I have a few 6.5 Grendel ARs and they've been nothing but reliable using the C- Products Duramag 6.5 Grendel mags. The E-Lander mags have also been 100% reliable. Most of my Grendels also have several thousand rounds through them without a a bolt breaking and zero stoppages. I don't find it hard to believe that Sig finally figured it out and the Spear lt will be reliable. Already ordered one and if it does shoot more accurately, is reliable, and light weight then I'm probably going to be selling off a lot of my AKs.
I gotta say I'm a bit bummed out about the bolt dimensions. Despite what Mac said about bolt design and quality of materials, even the best x39 bolt for the AR platform still breaks with less rounds through it than any 5.56 bolt. Especially the extractor, it is basically a must to have several with you cause it will break. Now idk this maybe different altogether I'll keep my ears open if it proves me wrong or not, we'll see.
@@walker123qwe5 totally, I wanted a 7.62x39 weapon for a long time. I started with an AR chambered in x39 though much more accurate than most AKs you have to deal with the breakages within the bolt. I looked at what AKs were out there and seeking to build one (i didn't know it was so involved at the time). Thought about going the kit route and sending to a builder, but almost everyone I spoke to about it said unless you want a collectors type or cloning an ak from a specific region it isn't worth the money. Then looked at pre-built ones like meridian, rd, kusa, psa etc and the word varies based on what company you're talking about either its way too expensive like RD and meridian (crazy wait time) and the psa is not up to snuff with the likes of a wasr for less. So logically I went Galil cause it offers everything I was looking for in an ak in terms of modularity and modernity while being priced about the same or less than the best AKs like Zastavas and Arsenals. Galil Ace is the answer and I love it.
from the video, not that he mentioned it, but it looks like the extractor was a different design then the 5.56, this along with the dual ejectors and gas control should theoretically make things much more reliable than typical hogged out 5.56 x39 bolts
I understand that ammo is not as cheep as it once was BUT I was wondering about the bravo company AR long term test, I ask this because you said you have shifted from "DI" AR's to the Sig Virtus/MCX. love your content I was just interested in this. Thank you for all these years of entertainment.
DI guns are still a great system. A bufferless system that actually works is obviously attractive for several reasons though. I know I won't be shifting away from DI guns until these MCX type guns have truly proven themselves over time
Unless CZ has a patent death grip on their x39 bren2 magwell, then I'm going to say no. Since their mags don't prevent you from using AR mags if you choose, then there's no reason not tuse them. They're a better design for x39, and they'd be a solid base mag for 6mm arc/6.5 Grendel. Before the AK cult jumps in, AK mags are fundamentally useless for modular/ modern firearms. Plus, if you can afford this rifle you can afford 30 dollar mags.
Dunno, PWS on #2 gas setting with the JP capture spring has about the smoothest recoil impulses in 762×39 that I have experienced. Suppresses nicely as well. The long stroke piston seems to have a great dwell time as well.
Don't forget the Sig556R flop... oh you mentioned it, good. Don't forget Robinson Armament's XCR that takes Duramag's. Also I cannot find any Duramag's for sale. Probably stick with CMMG Mutant or MK47 to use my large supply of cheap magazines.
Is the gas block located the same place as the 5.56 barrel? Will the handguard work on the 5.56 or will we have to get a different handguard for the 5.56 conversion? Thanks for the great review and the information given!
The handguard for the 16" version for both 7.62 and 5.56 are the same. However if you look at pictures for the SBR and Pistol versions the handguards for all 3 calibers are different. The gas port on the handguard are in different locations for the 7.62 and 5.56 version even though they're both 11" barrels. The 300 blackout has the shortest barrel so the handguard is obviously shorter than the other 2. I guess the adjustable gas block on the SBR/Pistol variants for 7.62 and 5.56 are in different locations for a reason.
7.62x39 bolt has to be hogged out and a known breakage item in other firearms that use a 5.56 size bolt. Lifespan on this one, especially considering SIGS history of "support"? and "quality"? DEF a cause for concern. Try to source a bolt for a Daewoo DR 300 lately?
How does the accuracy for the Spear LT compare between 5.56 version and the 7.62 version? Size groups. Especially when using better 7.62 such as golden tiger or barnaul. a side by side video would be great. I did hear your reference to 1.3" groups with barnaul.

Would be nice to see that domestic production kick off. I’m not sure how much market exists for it and if it’ll ever really take off. One can hope but if the price isn’t close to the old stuff I could see it easily dying out as folks adopt other calibers that are more cost effective
Idk if I'm convinced yet I would like to see this revisited after a higher round count.
I agree. I’ve broken bolt lugs off AR bolt heads in 7.62x39. I’ll be pleasantly surprised if this platform doesn’t do the same thing since the bolt dimensions are the same
Give it time. Reports of them breaking will surface.

Mike, so you can just change the bolt and barrel on this gun, and change it from a 7.62x39 to a 5.56? That's freaking amazing.
The C Products mags are the best. The only bad thing with the 7.62x39 AR is that Lewis Machine & Tool quit making their enhanced bolts.
PSA all day! I have my 10" KS47 grouping 3/4 at 100yds. put an adjust able gas block on it and upgraded recoil spring for less than $150 and it a softer shooter than the Sig. I had a 762x39 AR15 and LUV’D IT. I will never go back in an AR platform, because the bolt face was destroyed after approximately 2k rounds. Same reason for not shooting 6.5 Grendel, the material holding the locking lugs I’d almost paper thin…. Not good.

It would be freakin sweet if they came out with a 6.5 Grendel or 6mm ARC version... So far the only AR type rifle I could get to run reliably in 7.62×39 is a PWS. I've had nothing but problems with the couple I built. But I'm liking this one also. Great video as always keepem coming brother!!!

Now, thts not me saying my builds "are just as good." I'm saying I found what works for me, and I've shared that knowledge with others and they've gotten the same results. This new Sig is the next level up for me. Can't wait to get my hands on it!!
@@ngaoutdoors4157 I was having lots of light primer strikes, ejection issues, and feeding issues. You can modify the firing pin to clear up the light primer strikes, you can do a little dremel work on the extractor to fix the ejection, and I'm pretty sure the feeding issues is magazine related but I wasn't willing to go buy a bunch of mags in hopes of finding a few that worked to get a reliable gun. I've got the other guns to run but I still have a little feeding issues and because the PWS never has issues thats what I tend to grab. But I have a couple 6.5 Grendels, 6mm ARCs, a 6.8SPC, a 224 Valkyrie and several 223/556 AR's that I've built myself and never had any issues as far as needing to modify things to get them to run reliably but for whatever reason the 7.62×39 is finicky or at least they use to be. The spear in 7.62x39 is one of the biggest rip offs out there. You might as well get an ar47 and save 2k bucks seeing as they both use flimsy little bored out bolts and crappy ar47 mags that are notorious for being unreliable. Yes even the duramags.
Don't know much about guns outside of what I learned in the military (was a paratrooper and unit armorer), but I went in to pick up a 7.62 AR for a SHTF rifle with stopping power.

If you can find an Olight Odin Turbo LEP, that' the light of lights for longer range intense beam. No problem identifying targets at 500m.
I just thought this was important to note because a SPEAR LT in 7.62 is entirely viable for similar contracts in Europe or other western nations' militaries.

with 2 other large company's having made (CMMG, PSA) AR's that are reliable and take ak mags , combined with the availability/affordability of ak mags and the historical unreliability of 7.62x39 ar mags, Sig made a huge mistake by not spending a little bit to slightly redesign the lower to accept ak mags.
Genuine question here, maybe I'm overlooking something, what do you lose in terms of modularity with AK magazines?
It does not use AK magazines; therefore, SIG did not get it right.
The weakness of this rifle will be in getting the magazines for it
I gotta say I'm a bit bummed out about the bolt dimensions.
If you hog out finished parts, this is common. If you engineer the parts from the get-go it is not as big a problem.
@@walker123qwe5 My 5.45x39 Galil ACE is pretty sweet. It would be one of my first choices for a 7.62x39 gun. It takes AK magazines.
from the video, not that he mentioned it, but it looks like the extractor was a different design then the 5.56, this along with the dual ejectors and gas control should theoretically make things much more reliable than typical hogged out 5.56 x39 bolts
SIG MCX>All others. I hope handguards are same for both calibers so no need to have 2 different handguards.
@@platinummarketingservices8448 Agreed!
I havent had any failures The new 7.62x39 ar duramags. Best in the business
Really? Their 5.45x39 AR magazines are inferior to the ASC's.
@@eloiseharbeson2483 yes, 7.62x39 ASC mags fail to feed the last 4-5 rounds 90 percent of the time.
Looking forward to getting mine in on Monday.
Ill be interested in a Sig Spear when its available for consumer purchase in 6.8X51
2000 rounds and counting...
Gun shoots so hot you don't see it cycle and almost not the shell ejecting.
Rough.
Question is will they make enough that everyone who wants one, can get one? I seriously doubt it.
the 7.62 spear is in stock in my area. the 300blk the one they can't keep in stock imo
How does the accuracy for the Spear LT compare between 5.56 version and the 7.62 version? Size groups. Especially when using better 7.62 such as golden tiger or barnaul. a side by side video would be great. I did hear your reference to 1.3" groups with barnaul.
