I remember reading the Nintendo Power walkthrough and being fascinated, but never had a GBA. Then I got a DS, and begged my dad to take me to get Dual Strike. I was so enamored I saw units in my sleep for months afterwards.
Excited isn't a strong enough word.
Brings me so many memories.
The best birthday gift I picked. I would stay up very late playing the games in a cozy bed. I just adore this game. Its my favorite series.
We need to buy this so we can get Days of Ruin remake!
I also saw the tanks etc when I closed my eyes after a 8 hour gaming session. I fully replayed at least 10 times over the last 20 years
that Nintendo power is always what I think of too. was wondering what it was all about since it was on the cover. never ended up getting it, probably wont check it out now either since its just not my type of game, but cool to see itback since I still get nostalgia from it that way lol
11:02 - On that note. If we are able to get an "Advance Wars: Days of Ruin" remake; I'd like to see it get the Starcraft treatment. Where on top of the strategic gameplay, we get fully cinematic FMV's to tell the story.
Days of Ruin had a surprising heavy story, but it was held back by the limitations of the DS only allowing for still character portraits with text.
Facts
Days of Ruin was my favorite, music was banging too
BIG FACTS!
As long as it stays dark and serious. Days of Ruin is my favorite.
i still listen to the DoR OST all the time.
it goes really really REALLY hard yall. its legit one of the greatest of all time. full stop.
and the story is legitmately good. NOT great but very good. i got emotional more than once and its stuck with me.
its a little bit of a cliche post apocalyptic kind of thing but there are some surprises to be sure heh.
and a few of the more difficult battles will sear themselves into your memory just like weigraf from FFTactics.
getting gold ratings in every battle are some of the most challenging and satisfyibg gaming I have ever experienced.
so many 'strategy' games just fall into a simple cheese strat that renders the entire thing trivial. and only two ganes have never let up on the challenge, final fantasy tactics and advance wars, of which DoR IMO is its peak.
btw, PLEASE search the 'gametal hope never dies' vid right. now. and enjoy.
It's funny bringing X-COM up as a comparison because the creator of the original X-Com has cited Advance Wars as one of his favourite strategy series ever. A few years ago he said in an interview that he still carries around a Gameboy most of the time to play it everywhere he goes.
Hoping it sells well. Advance Wars deserves to thrive just like Fire Emblem
Not for full price. How is this full price but Metroid prime remake wasn't. Weird!
No one “deserves” anything. Advance Wars hasn’t released a game since 2008. You’re not gonna thrive unless you innovate and release new games.
It won’t sell unfortunately
@@Gamescommentary To be fair this is a remake from the ground up and it's 2 games. These aren't short games either it'll take the average person easily around 50+ hours to beat the 2 games and if you wan to 100% them close to a 100 hours.
I know right. I need my dual tag strike powers again. Really hope they make more of them.
I really hope that this sales well because I want to get remakes of Dual Strike and Days of Ruin
dual strike could be difficult to remake since it features dualscreen
I’ll go a step further. It’s time for the next Wars game. Just like the Return of Samus remake lead to Metroid: Dread, I’d like this remake to be the catalyst for the next wave.
Less likely to happen. I think they're more likely to make a new game before remaking either of those. A simple re-release on new hardware may happen, but I wouldn't hold my breath
I'd be hype if days of ruin gets a remake but it's grittier setting might stop it from being remade inorder for them to maintain the image of Advanced wars rn
Battle network collection and now advance wars collection. I feel like I'm in my teens again. I'm loving all these gba games we are getting again
Right? My 2 favorite series on the GBA. Got into both of them when I was in 4th or 5th grade.
Now all we need is Final Fantasy Tactics Advance 3!
@@Yahikkox dang that's a good idea
If the map designer has been shrunk to that degree, it's going to be a huge loss. I've been hoping to recreate some of the spectacular competitive maps over at Advance Wars by Web.
If i remember correctly on the original game, the designer had 3 option sizes to choose from. It'd be weird if they didn't keep them or even added a 4th even bigger option........
It's larger than they show here, by a lot
Zion, ive been watching your alls previous videos and I love your personality so much! It gives me faith in humanity that people can remain understanding and empathetic past childhood. Also your passion and excitement for Nintendo really shows.
I would love to see you talk about your “dream games”. Just twists on games we love that could be done better or different. I personally would love an open island Wii Sports Resort remake where you could walk around maka wuhu and actually walk to the events/stores where you can get new equipment and clothing. Just an idea I would love to hear your opinion on! I love your content, so either way thanks!
I had no desire to get this when it was originally announced. Then the delays kept piling on and people talked about it and I started to be intrigued. I don't play strategy games. I played the original first game a bit but never cared to get into it. But I ended up grabbing it day one and can't put it down. Such a good buy. Love the newer graphics too. Feels like playing with toys lol
Do you know if it has a play and wait multiplayer? Like wargroove did?
(Where you take a turn then can leave and the other player can login and make their turn the next day. Kind of the chess by mail mode)
Game was so satisfyingly challenging on higher difficulties or against real people. So fun. I hope it sells amazing and we get a sequel!
days of ruin remake is likely not gonna happen since its such a MASSIVE shift in tone and style but barring something as amazing as that happening, i really hope advance wars is revived as a francise with original non remake titles
imagine the better of the AW and fire emblem francises FINALLY getting the support it deserves
god the GBA was so good!
its up there with the SNES and PS2 man
So exited to get back to Advance wars after so long!
can you replay missions in this reboot camp? my other reason to buy this is online play with a ladder, but it sounds like that might not happen...
I’ve had this pre-ordered for a long time. Great that I’ll finally get it.
what about custom map sizes, advance campaign, how does vs play work? do you pick whether you play aw1 style or aw2 style co stats because all we've seen is the neo tank button
also does aw1 sturm have a different sprite?
The art style is the same in both Campaigns from footage I have seen.
One reviewer said you can have 50 slots for Design Maps and default max size 30x20 (size can be changed).
@@RadioTails That's good, I was worried that they would keep the inferior gba/dual strike map maker, days of ruin had the best one
still hopibg for bigger map sizes
Would love to see the original Super Famicom Wars maps revamped as a DLC.
This should of been pixel art
To me I always liked these games better than fire emblem but was it just me or the first game was harder to find? I only ever played 2 and now that I’m older I can probably beat it now. The sandbox thing makes it feel like a war hammer Board game which actually is really really cool. Also I completely forgot about the last two advance wars games on the ds….wow I live under a rock.
The first one had the incredibly unfortunate timing of being released in America on September 10 2001, which actually made the game get delayed everywhere else until a bundle with 2. I'm sure Nintendo wasn't too keen on printing too many more after the first batch. Advance Wars really is a cursed franchise.
@@bloodbane93 oh yeah some games they didn’t market for too much either. I feel like I would have actually just had the game and probably a few others too if my family had bought me games more often. Like for example mega man battle network. I didn’t have the first one. I don’t know why I religiously watched the anime but didn’t know there was even a game until like a couple years later. Marketing is a big deal. And yeah 2001 was rough
We need to buy this so we can get Days of Ruin remake!
@@jaretco6423 probably the modern theme of the units.
So no public lobbies in multiplayer? Or quick matches? Or any other way to play against randoms? Just multiplayer with friends? To say I'm disappointed would be an understatement.
I'll still buy it and enjoy the singleplayer, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't excited about the concept of playing one of my favorite childhood games online. Such a shame.
Same, well said
There IS a way to play the old games online though afaik (on PC that is).
@@SicketMog Or AWBW.
Maybe they can give a future update on this?
@@JasonStephens7 I REALLY hope so
I played both Gba versions and even bought wars 1 with a gba sp a few years ago. Needless to say, I'm a fan. 60 bucks seems awfully steep though. I'm going to have to think about whether I'm willing to spend that.
Would have loved to see matchmaking with randoms online, if only in a casual sense but no doubt the community can help fill in the gap there. Really happy with what I've played of it so far and can't wait to dig into some community-led competition.
It would have been nice to get all 4 titles in a collection that would be worth the $60 price tag but I’m still happy they released this collection can’t wait to pick it up
I suspect the reason they did this was because Advance Wars 1+2 was the original domestic Japanese release. Advance Wars 1 and Advance Wars 2 were only released independently of each other in the US and Europe. Because of 9/11, Advance Wars 1 was not released by itself in Japan. Instead, about a year after Advance Wars 2 was released in the States, Nintendo released a compilation version of the two games together on a single GBA pak. This Re-Boot Camp is basically a remake of that particular version.
remember to 60 $ and no matchmaking
Everything you explained is the reason I love advance wars, I played the original gba version and I absolutely love it, what I love about it is that the countries I. The game are based on actual countries, every unit has its strengths and weaknesses and it really makes you strategize attack and defense at the same time and the different terrain types on the map, when I heard about the reboot finally being released, I used one of my vouchers for it because of how much fun I had playing the originals and love the overall gameplay
Based on actual countries?
I've been playing Advanced Wars Dual Strike on my DS Lite, it's a fantastic game and tricky to beat too. This remake looks amazing.
Dual Strike was my favorite as kid for sure. So cool having two co.
I played allot of advanced wars on and off since 2003-2004 my senoir year in high school with my bro on the Gameboy advance. It made school fun having a small handheld playing a great game with someone highly competitive. We're ready now with Kambi / Grit and Eagle / Sami.
Are these new levels or the same levels with new graphics?
Should've probably mention that for vehicles you also need to keep track off all vehicle's gasoline. Air and Sea in particular
Thanks for the review, I'll likely pick it up at some point. Any idea how it compares to Wargroove?
I tried wargroove and felt it was way too slow in comparison.
Advance wars is miles ahead.
Yes, this is the game Wargroove was measured against in the eyes of turn based strategy games. I don't think you'd regret picking it up.
Very different game, wargroove has only really each char has a different groove and otherwise every unit regardless of commander picked has the same stats, but advance wars has the entire army changes based on co picked and co powers are more op. Completely different feel then wargroove.
Also, the enemy generally out numbered you but they made the ai worse to compensate in advance wars, kinda a different feel when you have only half the units of the enemy co and have to win somehow. Esp on advance campaign where they dont even rate you on technique or power anymore cause they know you'll get destroyed, only your speed matters and the S rank req is very hard.
If you like wargroove you should also check out Triangle Strategy
I wonder if you can play with random people online or just friends? Also, I hope you can design bigger maps than what was shown in this video.
Friends only unfortunately
I guess friends only online but maybe they’ll change that with a future update?
@@vincentpreziuso3597 Oh that's so disappointing to hear. If I could play against randoms with my Advance Wars DS why not with this one? Sigh.
I think it’s probably due to having to rework some of the units as a balancing issue, but would’ve been cool
What time will it be released tmr?
I don’t know why but I’m oddly drawn to this game. Never played the original. Never even gave it a second thought when it was announced. But now seeing gameplay and various reviews I’ll probably pick it up.
Edit: I did actually pick it up and I love it!
great to hear! its weirdly addictive
first time playing it too, addicted af lol
The gba version has been one of my favorite game of all time for years, I put a lot of hours into it. Happy to say that the Switch version plays just as good as the originals.
@@huge_ballsyes I got advance wars and the second one around when they first came out and I was super addicted to those games. I feel like I might wait till I can pick this up for less money though
Welp this comment has officially pushed me into buying it
can you do one on the new rtype tactical thats coming out later this year please?
The fact that Metroid Prime Remastered with its full 3D environments and PBR runs at a rock solid 60fps (even if it’s “just” 900p), and yet with this, 5 little helicopters floating on some 2D sky has the framerate jumping all over the place is unforgivable. Especially with all the time they had during the massive delay.
Metroid is also half the price...
Wow, the new graphics are cool! Just replayed Advance Wars again recently. Perfect timing.
Sounds like bad timing. No real reason to play this remaster if you just played these games.
May want to put in a note: Online Play is friends onlys and 1v1. The "up to 4 player" mode is only local play.
It's a small negative but nothing will deter fans of the game.
My complaint is the slowness of when powers activate, and the voice acting is lackluster with only saying the first sentence or so rather than the entire dialogue.
My other major complaint is not being able to save in versus mode at all. Also can’t save in campaign whenever I want, so I have to only start at the beginning of a turn rather than anywhere anytime.
I'm just constantly mesmerised by how good the character animation looks.
What do you mean, they look awful! Like cheap vtuber models haha
Does it ...?
@@AsecasJavi yes
The animation looks better than the designs.
@@gigastrike2 The new graphics as a whole are obsiously questionnable but the CO designs and their animations are generally really good.
Whats about the Balancing of the COs?
Can you still block in a fighter plane with 4 tanks?
Idk why everyone is so harsh about the art. I've been excited for this ever since it's first announcement.
Same. I never played the originals but find the Re-Boot art style to be quite charming.
Watching this kind of artstyle is like fresh air for me since we only got realistic graphics and have no art nowdays
They could've just add pixel graphic option... I never played both original and the remake, but i find the pixel art more charming.
Because it shows on several levels that the artists don't understand the principles of art. Starting with wobbly Neotanks.
It’s a completely different tone to the original and people tend to like the thing they liked before.
I have it pre ordered, I'm excited. I wish though it went the hd pixel route like squareenix
Great review, we can't wait to dive into this one!
Nice ive been waiting for a review of this game!
Only a year and a half extra :p
@@rambo_andoyeah i cried when it got delayed 😭
Might be an outlier here but the plastic-ness of the units bother me. I guess in practice its more to resemble a toy like aesthetic. The character animated captains are fine but even then, if you look at the static menu illustration art there's something missing to me when it got remastered from its 2d original. The original art is just that good I guess. Maybe I wanted Advance Wars but with the Guilty Gear XRD or Strive 2d style treatment.
Yes, the original art style for the units was excellent, and it was a mis-step to change it, rather than clean it up for HD graphics. The COs look good though
I have this game preordered. I just wish we'd gotten a little taste of AW2 during some of these reviews.
There is an "embargo" (sort of) where developers asked reviewers do not share AW2 footage, so newcomers are not spoiled. I don't really think is necessary, but it's ok the devs push for that.
I hope they make DLC with new units. I miss a plane that I can use against ground and still be abel to put up a fight in the sky. The same about soldiers on the ground with stinger rocket against air units. More diverse naval units would be welcome to. And the antitank gun from Dual strike.
Did they fix the AI so it doesn't automatically know where your units are with fog of war on? In the original version, I would hide troops in the forest, and the AI always come up to their exact spots.
maan im soo hyped for and and wanna see what black hole team looks like in 2
Love the game , still have AW1 on GBA. The game is awesome, always been a fan of this game. The only problem is you can’t save a versus game for later , other than that it’s great.
can someone please confirm if you can play online up to 4 players or not
Pre-ordered this when it was first announced. I am so looking forward to its release.
I just really hope that the remade audio holds up to the original
I love the art style
I forgot about this game, but glad I did not miss it!! Def getting this
Radii, not radiuses.
Oh, and I'm excited to play these games again. Been around 20 years since I played them, guess it's about time to play them again.
If this does well, we might eventually see the same treatment for the other forgotten classics like Golden Sun, Sin and Punishment, and Custom Robo.
YESSS!!! Custom robo needs a comeback!
Custom Robo. YES PLEASE.
Custom and Chibi Robo, plz
Dang, I’ve never played these, but it reminds me a bit of a strategy war game on NES my brother & I used to play called Conflict. Advanced Wats is way more, well advanced, but it’s in that genre. I’ll have to get this once I’m done with Tears of the Kingdom.
OP says that they have a hard time finding something to complain about. Lol. Just look at online multiplayer. I promise it doesn't take very long to find.
10:59 YES! By the way, was it called Days of Ruin even in UK? I assumed it was Dark Conflict in every European country.
If they ever did a online mode they should do it where you can play with friends. And if they started a match and both can't continue because they have to go because you know how long battles are. They should have it save and remain where they both stopped. Like a save file online then when both jump back on they continue where they left off.
I'm going to buy and love this game, especially in multiplayer, but I still wish they made a new entry with this style of graphics.
It makes sense why they are treading back to their OG roots. They don’t know if this is going to sell past the OG fans of this, so they are reintroducing the franchise and if it’s popular, they’ll definitely make a newer entry
@@drakeboutte1466 You're probably right, but the switch is 6 years old now, any "new" Advance Wars game will be for the next console.
I think this was Nintendo testing to see if the developers of Shantae were up for developing an Advance Wars game. Cool cell shaded are style, similar to River City Girls.
Still hoping for a content update/DLC/expansion involving Dual Strike. Just give me the COs, units, and the dual CO mechanic.
Coming back to Nintendolife it's still the quality i am use to! Even if i really miss the "hello there lovely people" :)
Can't wait to pick up this game on Friday!
4:22 Bridges turn into choke points, not check points, right?
I can't wait. This is incredible. So excited!
Turtle approves of this review
Is the A I. Smarter or the same?
Not sure if I will have it physical or downloaded🤔
Yes there is a physical copy
Is there an option to turn the graphics back good?
DId they bother to balance the COs? I know too well that's they aren't balance at all in the original games
This series was my intro to turn based tactics games. I wasn't very good at RTS games, but having the ability to take my time started a fascination that grew into my addiction to XCOM2. (Just don't play the Switch version of XCOM2.)
What’s wrong with the switch version?
@@braves4life25 It has its issues but mainly the biggest issue with it is that it doesn't have mod support. The modding community has done wonders with XCOM EU/EW and XCOM 2. Hell, you don't even need to know much to mod the game yourself since almost all of the numerical values in the game (eg damage a weapon does, how accurate it is, etc) is in a plaintext format so you can edit a lot of the game with a program like the free and excellent Notepad++
Ironically, the Switch version is more optimized for Switch hardware than the PC version is for the Steam Deck. So, if you aren't into modding, the Switch version is better for portable gaming.
@braves4life25 Mod support is a big reason and it loads very slowly. More than that, the switch version has a short character draw distance. Ive had many times where the game seems to disagree where a downed soldier is as they despawn then respawn as I move the camera. Long range sniper tricks become unusable as the game doesn't acknowledge when I have a clear line of sight for my sniper half way across the map, because his target has despawned. I've used this tactic many times in the PC version as it makes the Killzone skill incredible.
2023 is truly a year for the old gen players!! from MMBN Collection, Advance Wars Reboot, to Suikoden Remaster are awesome!!
You think konami will throw us vandal hearts fans a bone?
I hope this is a great remake, i'm looking forward to playing it and i hope it's worth the wait, i understand they want to be sensitive and careful with everything going on but keeping us waiting this long was a weird move if the game was allegedly finished long before now
They didn’t wanna release like at the beginning of it which is understandable. (Funny they released it 1 year later)
It's this series' curse at this point. The original Advance Wars faced something similar.
Yeah, I'm thinking they used the extended time to polish it more. Then Ukraine happened. I hope Way Forward polished it up more instead of just letting it sit on the shelf.
I cannot wait to experience these beautiful games!
Wow a 9/10 is pretty generous considering the barebones online multiplayer and critiques of the art style. Many prefer the sprites on GBA.
9/10 is beyond reason. Should be much lower.
It is beautiful, the only issue I have is that you can't save versus missions
I thought about getting it. I loved it for Turbo Duo. Too bad it's for $60. If it was for $20 maybe I would have got it...
This game was probably the best purchase I made this year, I play on all platforms for this game GBA DS and now the switch and I'm addicted to it. I'm constantly making new maps to play with my buddies and I'm learning better ways to strategize. I really hope that it becomes an esports event
That's my problem with this remake, looks and sounds amazing but I played these games before. With so many new games to buy I can't justify a second go right now.
I use to love this game as a kid I wonder if I'll be any better at it as an adult lol
It is! As an adult, the real strategy starts to flow!
this games animations and style remind me of the recent shantae games and theyre gorgeously styled and animated
these characters' idle animataions even have such color and life to them i love them all.
I cant keep it down any longer...
WHERE IS MY DUAL STRIKE!? 😭
So can you play online with random or just friends
I believe it’s just friends
Preordered it physically. I can’t wait for it to get here!
is it two player ?
I am so pumped. Got my preordered and ready to hit the battlefield
I’ve never played an Advance Wars game or anything similar, but I might just have to check this remake out! It looks pretty fun! Thanks for the review, Nintendo Life!
Multiplayer matchmaking would make this a must buy for me.
I used to love the mini intro animation when every fight starts and the sounds.. in this new one it was a bit disappointing to see there is almost no sound to those intros.. it's a very subtle detail but I just to love that 😢
I might just try out the originals on my analogue pocket.
looks promising cool looking game
9/1🎉🎉🎉 pre-ordered last week ☺️
Strange the game is not available in Japan. I wanted to get it with TotK with a voucher but not in Japan it turns out:(
60$ tho? Chillll I’m a advance war fan but 60$ is steeeep
$60 is standard throughout the industry (it's actually creeping up to $70). Pretty much the only games going lower are indies. If it's too expensive, don't buy it. After all, there's still the originals and Advance Wars by Web. But these are two games with tons of replayability and two campaigns + extras. I don't know you, but I'm probably going to sink a ton of time into this one since I love these games so much. I think it's worth it.
mannn i remember, scootering miles away to the only mall in town to go buy this game for gba.
yes it is worth it. however i hope there are certain improvements
I loooove this game! 9/10 is fair enough. However, I wished they made some needed adjustments to the game in order to balance it. Like lowering the price of marine units, and I was disappointed the computer still hates and tries to kill all APC possible lol. Love this game though
So many great games coming out. I can’t keep up.
I missed out on these and enjoyed the DS games. I am going to have to pick this one up.
delaying it for so long and making it $60 is nintendo begging for it to fail, honestly, but it looks great and lovingly-crafted
you sound like $60 is a lot of money lol
