Best case, GCG sells wurm before going under, hopefully to a passionate group around the community. As far as i've heard the game does well enough on its own financially
That would be good *if* GCG does continue to struggle with monetization of it's other ventures. And while Wurm does have low overheads making it viable to keep running at profit we can only hope they don't kill the goose laying the golden eggs for them trying to get it to lay more.
"are proud to introduce an in-game shop, which you can access anywhere and at any time. " - a quote from Krister's post. When I read this my heart sank. It became immediately evident this guy doesn't understand the spirit of Wurm at all. Even if the game doesn't die, it certainly won't be what used to be. Great video by the way. I had no idea all this was going on. I haven't been very active with Wurm for quite some time.

Great Video - Alot of veterans have had alot of history with Wurm - I too put alot of time and effort into Wurm online working along side devs - remember the infant Wurm online and walking along side with Rolf and Notch (and Jake) and have a huge collection of old stories from per-Alpha, Alpha, Beta, gold, gold 2, "rapture", and gold 3, etc - It built a huge community that has tapered off due to the past decisions and changes so personally I do hope it brings some life in it
100% I think it's actually kind of hard to put into word how much these silly little pixels mean to folks who have been part of such a long ride. I really am hoping for the best possible outcomes from all of this!

I find myself looking back on the days when we didn't even have animations and think to myself, "Damn, those were the days..." Even when we've had vast amounts of QOL improvements in those upcoming years. The future is uncertain and frightening at times, but if life has taught me anything; its not about the reward at the end, its about the journey.
This hit my feed for some reason, but not too much of a surprise. I just got an email about "Wurm is back" on October 18. Up until then and again today, I hadn't given a thought to Wurm after around 2013. I just haven't had the time to dedicate to ANY MMO. I would like to get back into Wurm, but I just don't know... I don't even think ANYTHING I worked on still exists. That is how out of touch I am. I think I'll go look for recent videos and what people think in the last couple weeks.
this game has shot itself in the foot by having a weird paywall that locks most of the game behind level 20 with a monthly fee. Wurm Unlimited is a superior game for that reason alone. you can still play online with people.
I don't know if I agree that if that's the real issue. Plenty of games have monthly subscription payment models such as Runescape, WoW etc. All of which have achieved far greater success than Wurm.
The biggest problem I had with wurm (stopped playing) was because I can create a new account and spend 3 hours traveling trying to find a good spot to settle....only to find out that I cant place a deed down because of hostile creatures nearby.. Remove that limitation, allow players to drop a deed down regardless of the hostiles just dont let the guards (if any are bought) spawn until the hostiles are off the deed. Also when I was playing, most of the servers had an over abundance of creatures being bred on deeds... which in turn reduced the amount of wild that would/could spawn. Its not good to have a new player come in, get hit with an infestation of breeder lag. I'm sure I am not the only one but I play with the mindset of being self reliant. I'm impatient when it comes to waiting for people to get online so I can get a task done. Trade is good.... but only when it works out for both parties. Breeder greed never works out for both parties. If they could fix that without changing to core mechanics of the game. I'd probably come back. Until then I'll stick with my Wurm Unlimited server. Regardless I do hope that the game does get better for all you hard core players, but for casual players like myself...ehhh I doubt it will.. Things I will miss..... Working for prem ("you want dirt.....I'll get you dirt")... working for silver for prem ("you want even more dirt....ohhh I'll get you even more dirt") and working for silver for deed ("More flippin dirt?"). And selling referrals
I'm already comfy playing on WU instead, heard from an alliance mate about this but now I understand it better. Still sad to see WO go this route. I remember seeing some apocalypse sounding scenarios in the past, but not like this. My heart will always have room for WO (at least the nostalgia of it) so I still hope for the best
Its been a long time since I've first heard of Wurm, but it wasn't until this past week that I saw the video by Josh Strife Hayes that I actually got see what the game looked like. Now seeing this video gives me the sad sense that something that has been around for such a while may be coming to end that may not have otherwise occurred. It could be become "better"; however, with the concern being mentioned on the Cash Shop I don't have much confidence on "better" being the result. It will be interesting see how things progress or not, and look forward to seeing future videos about!
Josh's video about Wurm was a great representation of what Wurm is - especially for a new player. I really hope this all has a happy ending of sorts rather than a tragic tale of caution for other 3rd parties that aspire to running an MMO. Thanks for watching!
I'd say yes, it's free to try so you can easily see if it's your style with little commitment. There has of course been updates (positive and negative) since this video and if you're really curious you can find those in my playlist for Wurm News!
I am a long term veteran that has since moved to WU and has not played WO in a few years. I have not even played WU for the past 6 months (vet burnout break) lol, I just log on occasionally to keep my deed going. However, seeing this video title caused a reaction in me like someone had punched me in the gut and knocked the breath out of me. Wurm has always felt like a second home to me. It can be a love/hate relationship to be sure; but it is also the only game I never have, and never intended to, stop playing. And while I have moved from online to WU for several reasons, the deed I owned and loved is still there on WO and now owned by a friend. Also still there on WO are many other beloved locations, memories, and cherished friends. I guess I was suffering from the delusion that since this game has been around and a part of my life in one way or another for so long, it would always be there. A foolish delusion for sure since we all know this game has been on life support now for a very long time. And yet, the thought of someone finally pulling the plug on it makes me want to weep like it is a family member. While I sometimes regret leaving WO for WU and missing the new content and old friends, I am now grateful that I did and am established well in both places. I have even re-created some of my favorite parts of my old place on my new deed in WU. That being said, they aren't the same. As great and having WU is, it has always been a comfort to me to know that any time I chose to I could still log up WO and visit, or even return. I can only hope that if the new owners do decide they are done with WO they will resell it. And that it would happen before they change so much of what it is, it completely dies before it can be resold. Heck it isn't even that pricey for a video game these days really, it only sold for $350k last time. Maybe if worst comes to worst the community could figure out a way to crowd fund it and it would be the first player owned game.
The news since this video came out has certainly been mixed though sadly hasn't made Wurm's future any more certain. But thanks for watching and fingers crossed for all of us!
I highly recommend that you get on the forums or ask in kingdom chat if there are any deeds looking for citizens. Even if you want to maintain your own deed, it’s still good to have a larger active settlement nearby that you can trade with. If you do decide to go at it alone, then make sure you talk to them first before starting your deed. They may even show you to a nice piece of land. Being a part of a community in this game will give you a FAR better experience. Even if you’re just playing with a friend.
Depending on the server you chose to start on that sounds right for sure. Connecting with other players with the forums, official discord or ingame chat is the way to go to find yourself a populated village and server!
This has already been going on for years and years, and it started when Notch left the team in 2008. This is why he had a breakdown and left the team before he went to go come up with his "cave game". Too bad the forum site got "accidentally" wiped and the argument thread is lost. He got upset about the dragons being added to the game and the effect that their rare items had on real world trading and PVP. Ever since this time, PVP has been plagued with players who are only after making real life money. The most successful PVPers became those who used exploits and hacks in order to kill and raid as many players as possible to take their stuff so they could sell it for real world money. I think its funny all these veteran players coming out all of a sudden and claiming this problem is new when it has been going on for over a decade now. Making real world trading against the game rules was the best decision the development team ever made IMO, but it caused a large portion of the playerbase to leave and there is not much left. PVE has been chugging along, but its not the early 2000s anymore. There are more PVE sandbox games out there than I can count, and many of them have gameplay loops that challenge players in ways beyond it taking 5 hours a day to accomplish anything. If Notch stayed on the team, and the game continued to follow his vision, Wurm could be the most popular game of all time by now. I think the best thing that loyal members of the community can do right now is to band together and make an open source game that is like Wurm. If a clone of this game is made that has no microtransactions and no skill grinding, sign me up.
Undoubtedly Wurm has had a long and troubled history but I don't agree that the challenge that faces Wurm in current day is the same as the ones it's faced in the past. Maybe in some ways it's influenced by them, but it is notably different.
Wurm and good game? What dimension are you living in? I wrote not a few weeks before that announcement that what i assume was going to happen was a slow death while the devs squeeze as much as they can from the players and i got laughed at and made fun of in pms even while i was showing prime examples of niche mmo's that it happened to but people refuse to believe it. Fast forward a few weeks and a post goes up that's full of cooperate speak that all boils down to "we are going to squeeze every penny we can from the players" after all they stated their goal is to increase silver purchase REGARDLESS of increase of premium membership or playercount so ya gcg will most likely grind wurm into the ground now that they are taking direct charge just like they did with other platforms of theirs. Their friday key humble wannabe is not giving out keys to people so that is as good as dead while still taking money from people, their other platforms lie dormant with nothing going on on them after gcg took direct control so do i see a bright future for wurm? No not really sadly enough heck i wish i had a few million dollars laying around id straight up buy up wurm and give it the funding it so desperately needs and talent to make the game grow again but alas.
I hope that you're wrong - killing the golden goose for GCG to try and get more from it would be throwing away such a precious and unique game. That said, it seems like a strong possibility but....hopefully not...
Personally I don't agree that it's a better experience, with the time that I give Wurm I'd hate for that to be at risk of being lost to the whims of an individual who may just shut down a server overnight. And hosting and playing my own seems great but then there's no other players hah
Absolutely yeah - if that's the case at least for me personally that would be a type of death not to mention likely shorten it's overall life span. But it would exist, at least for a time.
Wurm is definitely dying, no doubt about ii... it's just that Wurm has been dying for an awfully long time now. Rolf and Notch disagreed about the direction their game was taking, and they parted ways in order to each pursue their own vision. It's tempting to look no further than the $350,000 price tag on the most recent Wurm acquisition, compare it to the $2,500,000,000 for which MS bought Minecraft, and conclude that Notch was right and Rolf was wrong. It may also be tempting to invert that snobbery and argue that Minecraft is merely the dumbed down, mass market junk food version of Wurm. Personally I wish the two had been able to resolve their differences... but that's just me 🙂 ... we are where we are.
Yeah it's very telling the different paths they took after they spilt back in the day. When Horton first hooked me up with an alpha download of Minecraft from Notch back in the day. I spent 10mins in creative and didn't see the potential and said "Well this is pointless, ugly and will never go anywhere". Egg on my face now huh?
It seems reductive to claim that there are right and wrong parties here, and that it boils down to the subjective success of different projects by people with different visions for design. By all metrics, both developers and games have proven successful in their own right. Minecraft is a more casual, approachable game with more mass appeal. That much is true, but it doesn't take away from the fact that Wurm has also been appealing enough to its own audience that they've been able to maintain it for 2 decades. Very few games can be as successful as those like Minecraft, and I assume Rolf wouldn't necessarily have been been happy to achieve the same levels of success if it meant compromising his vision to do so.
Sad to see, I haven't played the game in years to be honest and had no idea it had finally sold to someone else. According to nordic9 "The purchase price is SEK 3.37M ($335k) of which SEK 1M paid in cash, SEK 500k to be paid October 31, 2019 and SEK 1.87M through newly issued shares in Game Chest ." I think people should consider this, 335k alone is quite a lot of money, I'm not entirely sure how they expected to recoup acquisition cost without gouging the players quite hard in the end. I mean Drongo says they are a esports gaming company that bought a game like Wurm, it doesn't make sense. Financially the choices the company make don't really make a whole lotta sense, unless wurm magically started making MORE money after all these years I just don't get it. I can't seem to find it but there used to be some tax documents on code club abs website, they seem to be all gone now. Iirc sometime around 2013-2014 which would have been one of the most popular times for the game sadly they didn't even make 100k in a year after costs. Again they paid far more than the games worth and now I figure they be wanting some of that back. Hope I'm wrong tbh such a sad thing to see wurm be mishandled. Last part, after playing the game for over 10+ years, hearing so many times the game simply didn't make enough money to support its self, let alone hire more devs and always being asked to volunteer for community things. Never getting payed I have to wonder a bit how wrong has it all actually been? Rolf walks away with something for what he created but what about all the people and volunteers along the way? Shoved to the way side as always lol. Shame but whatever its life
I think it is worth noting that Wurm has been running at a small net profit for quite some time now. The overall overheads to keep the game running are low allowing it to push along nicely. That said, when compared to the 3.2mSEK debt reductions and the 12mSEK capital raised at the start of 2023 Wurms small net profit starts to look like not enough, especially since GCG's other ventures have proven to be net losses or barely break even. Best possible scenario is that any parties who provided capital are aware they are in for the long haul and there isn't pressure on Krister as CEO in the short term to yield unrealistic returns.
Drongo you said nothing speculated about everything and did a drama lama for views post me thinks. We can look at this video of when Drongo made silly statements and assumptions about Wurm and nothing came of it. 15 year vet here so yeah...keep moving on buddy.
Enki was a headless head GM, I am not sorry to see him go. Wurm online had the most toxic staff I have ever seen in any online game.
I loved making giant dirt towers and ramps up mountains in wurm. Also trying to survive with a small mine and a 4 tile farm. Good times.
Ahhh the simple life - many fond memories too!
Thanks, glad you found it informative! Yes you are right that the idea of "convenience" is something that is somewhat foreign in the overall philosophy of Wurm historically speaking. I can see why they want to make the change, much less impulse buying when you have to walk 20mins to the nearest trader. I don't know if this change alone is bad for the game overall, my concern will be what the shop contains and how it's priced...

Wurm is addictive, I don't see how it could die unless the admins die first
... ah, new management :-|
Yeahhhhhh new management and wait until you see what they did in my latest video haha
This is why I just play Wurm unlimited 🤷🏻♂️
prolly wont die, but they could make things more pay to win and annoying
Absolutely yeah - if that's the case at least for me personally that would be a type of death not to mention likely shorten it's overall life span. But it would exist, at least for a time.
We have to make our own wurm
Lots of people have tried and failed but I'd love to see it.
@@BloodyDrongo No wonder, game is so rich with mechanics that developing this game alone will take years.
@@patek2385 Absolutely!

Damn that's a good long stint in WoW, appreciate you giving my video a watch though and leaving a comment even though you don't play!
Very few games can be as successful as those like Minecraft, and I assume Rolf wouldn't necessarily have been been happy to achieve the same levels of success if it meant compromising his vision to do so.
my poor max lvl char on calysto 😞
Great video Drongo! ❤

I play this ages ago
Not dying.
Do you still have this confidence after the new website reveal?
@@BloodyDrongo a website doesn't impact my ability to play the game

Lmaoooooooooooo
I loved wurm
Love...or loved....
Sounds like they got swindled hard, someone's head bout to roll 😂
Lvl 20 block, probably that
Great
Drongo you said nothing speculated about everything and did a drama lama for views post me thinks. We can look at this video of when Drongo made silly statements and assumptions about Wurm and nothing came of it. 15 year vet here so yeah...keep moving on buddy.
Thanks for the comment!
I joined a few weeks ago and love it.
Welcome in!
wish there was newer wurm of some kind, im itching for this game but not this game!
Sadly none quite match it even to this day - but...maybe one day.
yes this was interesting , I dont think wurm online will die...
Hopefully won't be the case! I do think it is possible that if it continues on into the long term it may never be quite the same again.
