I like the fish bites on one hook and gulp bloodworms on the other. I highly favor the Gamakatsu top & bottom rig #238409. I fry them with Louisiana seasoned fish fry. However, I'll add some unsalted "season to taste" Louisiana mix to cut back on the saltiness. When does the season usually end for you, and have you tried North Jersey for them? Last couple of years haven't been too good for me and not sure why. I miss catching them in OC, but I'm MC and haven't traveled south as much, so mostly local fluking these days during the summer.
@@calicobox Sounds delicious, I like the idea about unsalted Louisiana mix! Sometimes too much salt can be overwhelming to the fish taste. I went out the other day for some kings but had no luck. I've caught them late in October though. To be honest, I've never tried going for them in northern jersey, only south. Worth a trip down south though during the summer to get on 'em! Thanks for your comment!
Nearly all the fishing videos on UA-cam just show guys catching fish after fish with little or no explanation of how they’re working the bait or lure. I really appreciate all the detail you put into your video. ⭐️
This year fluke fishing was slow at LBI. Getting lots of hits taking tail off gulp. Switched to light rod and tackle with fish bites. Had fun catching kings and spot on every cast.
This video on Kingfish is quite impressive. I occasionally catch them using blood worms. I reside north of your location in Great Kills, where the surf conditions are considerably calmer. Engaging in surf fishing with a lighter rod and reel enhances both the enjoyment and challenge of the experience. I appreciate the video. Thanks again! New friend
@@SaltySamFishing: went fishing this morning, got 2 big kings, one has 4 sand fleas in its stomach the other one has a tiny eel in its. Also got 2 tiny dogfish and 1 tiny fluke. I was using sand flea + fish bite, slow retreat to scout out where the kings were holding, will try again tomorrow.
Lately I’ve been catching kingfish as a by product of fluke fishing high low rig using the smallest size gulp white swimming mullet. The surf looked great for catching kingfish. Nice job!
Thanks for the information, I caught a few small ones in Edgewater, NJ a few years back. I was using earthworms. I am definitely interested in trying those fish bites. They may help keep bait on the hook with crab pulls. Lol
Love your videos. Very informative and well edited. Great job on the graphics by the way! I like to crab in NJ and I fish between pulling the traps. I'd like to up my game on fishing but can't seem to find many videos on back bay or marshland fishing. Places crabs like to hang out. Any chance of a video on something along those lines? Thanks and looking forward to more videos.
@@SaltySamFishing That would be great! I really have no idea what I'm doing or if there is even any fish to catch in those marshy canals. I usually just put some squid on a high/low rig and let it sit.
We live in MD and catch southern kingfish in DE, MD, and VA but really want to catch some northerns. Besdies LBI state park are there any decent public accessible beaches to try for them?
We target Gulf whiting (M. littoralis) here on the FL Gulf Coast. They get a bit larger than northern kingfish and fight well on light tackle. Like the kingfish, they are excellent table fare.
I got into catching whitting for the first time fishing off Spring Maid pier in Myrtel Beach last March. They are a hoot to catch. Just using a simple dropper rig with cut shrimp. I had no idea they came so far north.
I just tried Kingfish with my buddy as we got 2 at the absecon inlet. I let it sit in milk for 2 hours then cooked it up salt and pepper. Literally GREAT except the bones. 9/10. I just need to find the best spot for kingfish in NJ if you got recs
Are you catching fish on the bay side or the ocean side? Just curious. I've always wanted to fish in IBSP, but one, it's far from me, and two, I don't know much about the area, so it's a little daunting to try new spots.
Ocean side! It can be daunting for sure especially when looking at the open ocean. IBSP is a great place to fish. Since it's far from you, you can scout out spots ahead of time. On Google maps use the satellite mode and look for the darker water in between waves. Mark those spots on your phone and when you arrive try them out. Then using the method of moving up or down the beach, you're sure to get on some fish. Also check the tides ahead of time to see when high and low will be. You never know when you'll find your new favorite spot!
@@SaltySamFishing Love the videos man! I am a fellow New Jerseyan and am thinking of getting into surf fishing so I am just trying to enlighten myself. Your videos are super informative.
How do you prefer to catch Kingfish and what's your favorite way to cook them up? Let me know in the comments. Thanks for watching!

That’s cool to hear, glad to know they’re biting on Gulp too!
I catch a ton of them on chicken thigh cubes. I usually put the chicken with a squid strip and catch weakfish, seabass, and fluke.
Interesting, I’ll have to give that a shot!
Great video. I never knew Kingfish was whiteing. I ordered some merch and just received it. Very nice stuff and good quality.
Yup, just some regional terminology! Glad to hear the merch arrived and you are liking the quality. 👍
Well done! I got a few this weekend on LBI and also enjoyed a few blues off the beach working bunker pods.
I’ve heard some bluefish activity has picked up! Glad to hear you got on ‘em!
great video. what fish bite flavor where you using? or which ones do you recommend ?
The blood worm fish bites!
Really good video! The names of salt water fish confuse me with so many species with the same name Lol.
