Quickly turning a Harry Potter wand

  • I offered to turn a couple wands for the local library for a Potter Party they're having this summer. Apparently where I figured a couple dozen kids, they're expecting hundreds, so had to pick up the pace on my turning. It's been taking 5-10 minutes per wand depending on the wood species, as some turn faster, easier, like this cherry, though filming slowed me down a touch on this one.
Cherry wood, turned on an old Oliver patternmakers lathe with a 2" roughing gouge and skew used for its pointy tip. Finished with a homemade friction polish. A roughing gouge usually isn't a primary shaping tool, but it's been working well with these wands and giving a good enough surface finish.
Also trying out a new wireless mic so I can talk over the lathe, little muffled sounding from the face shield, but working ok so far. Now if I can just remember not to block the camera...
