Wood turning can be a dangerous hobby. My videos show my methods of turning and if you do not feel comfortable with my methods please do not copy them but rather use a method you feel comfortable using. Your safety is your responsibility as is the safety in your workshop. Enjoy the videos, hopefully something inspires you or helps you along the way. Irish woodturning is a craft that is dying out and should be preserved so that the tradition of Wood turning in Ireland stays alive and well.

That is beautiful Shay
Thank you Jane.

Thank you for the wand video. I especially appreciate your candor and caution when working with the material and your comfort/skill levels. Spot on. And I appreciate how you emphasized that using sandpaper was ok. I've heard others claim you should be skilled enough to do everything with minimal sanding...and that is just plain, not true. Your methods emphasize safety and flexibility in shaping the material. I really like that. Thank You.
I was taught to turn over thirty years ago by a retired master turner from the UK who had moved over here and I was lucky enough to have him as a neighbour. He was of the opinion , as am I that if new turners are not told that it is ok not to be perfect then the craft will surely die. In quite a few of my videos is say that it is fine if you need to start at 80 grit. It does not mean you are a bad turner, great finish cuts come with practice and most turners will get to the stage where their normal starting grit is 150 or 180. Young people coming into the craft need to know that excellence is attainable and they will eventually get there. Not to mention we can all have bad days where nothing goes right and again that is ok, just keep going.

@@BBTurning Thank you for the encouragement, sounds like you had a wise teacher.
Lovely Shay.
Thank Doug.
Shay
Very well done my friend
Cheers Barry.
Shay
Outstanding as usual shay, well done, if only you could use it to fix your health
Cheers Niall, yes if only mate.

Plenty of new ideas and tips here to try. I've been using a rotary tool while turning the piece to clean up and finish the ends of wands and honey dippers. Seems to work,,,, so far. Finishing the handle is a neat idea.
Thanks Brent.
Shay
nice job
Cheers Mark.
Shay
That is a great wand Shay. Need to make one myself of a similar design... hopefully I can get to use some elder I have obtained recently.
Ohh an elder wand, that should be cool Jiggsy mate.
Shay
@@BBTurning hopefully it seasons well, but should hopefully get 2 decent blanks from it.
Good luck with it Jiggsy mate.

I prefer cast iron for the bed of my lathes...more stable and stronger than aluminum(bauxite). Best you can afford...sound advice for all aspects of life. And your opinion about the Jacobs Chuck is right on. The Morse taper will hold and the grip becomes stronger when pressure is applied toward the spindle...that is what it is engineered to do. Side pressure will cause it to release. For reference, I am a Journeyman Machinist by trade, and your opinions are sound and correct, based on the technology and training I received before CNC's took over.
My last lathe had cast a cast iron bed and it was great, the stainless on this one is just easier to keep clean and i am all for easy 😁.

Hi Shay, Brilliant video on how to make a quick inexpensive wand.
I really liked your explanation about tool snobbery. I have a lot of Robert Sorby tools but also have Record, Ashley Isles, Axminster and Crown tools but when buying I bought the best I could for what I could afford, exactly as you mentioned. In fact most of my tools I have bought on eBay. Most needed a bit of TLC but once done they are good tools.
I bought a Continental SRG a few years ago at a big craft fair and wood turning exhibition and it dated back to WW2. It is stamped Sheffield Steel, Hut 2, 1943 and it works beautifully and still keeps and edge.
Great video Shay and look after yourself as you still sounded a bit chesty.
Cheers, Huw
Cheers Huw, yeah the chesty thing is from giving up smoking and eating a lot of sweets, my throat is very sticky if you get what I mean.

@@BBTurning 👍👍
Magical video as always (see what I did there!?!?!?!) and nice to see the cloth skew getting an honourable mention!
I must actually do a video with the skew at some stage.
Shay
all the don'ts you mention, yep I've done all of them.
I normally make wands from yew, they look great with the heart wood showing through.
even in the Harry potter world (i presume thats what you mean) wands can be many different lengths, dont limit yourself
A pleasure watching you work as always
Btw. You can't get a copyright strike for talking about something, only if you have uploaded someone's copyright material i.e. shown a clip or particularly if you play the music
While I agree with you re copyright strikes Ed the Author of said books is well known for being very tenacious about protecting her intellectual property. I heard one story where a turner in the UK had his wands on his regular market stall with a HP wands sign and he recieved a solictors letter to remove the sign and cease selling wands that are identified with the story. I was not going to take any chances. I know I was totally safe from a standard UA-cam copyright strike.
Shay
Great looking wand shay nicely done 👌 👍
Thanks William.
Shay
Are you self-imposing some rule / challenge that the wand has to be made from one contiguous piece of wood?
I typically use 2-3 different woods in a wand. HP universe wands have some magic stuff inside, so I typically put a tenon on the base of the shaft and and snug, over-length mortise in the grip to act as a hidden chamber. My son still hasn’t figured out that the shaft of his wand can be removed from the grip to expose a small chamber containing several Amethyst crystals.
The ones in the video are impulse buy wands Dave, done as quickly as possible so they sell at a price. The wands you describe I do for Wiccan clients who request them and they cost a lot more than these standard ones.
Shay
@@BBTurning I see. That makes great sense (and cents). Maybe I should start selling. 😅
(Googling Wicca wand consultants. 😂)
Thanks. Just subscribed. You remind me of Robbie the woodturner, If you don't mind me asking At what price do they sell well? I've seen any where from $40 to $100 plus on Etsy
Thank you. The wand in this video is an impulse buy wand, basically it is very quick to do so sells cheaply. I charge €15 for them and they sell very well.I wouldn't be looking at Etsy for price comparisons or to set prices. There are turnings on there that are not priced high enough to make the price of the blank back and there are also turnings on there what what turners refer to as "wood artists" and are so overpriced only a lunatic will buy them.
Shay.
1:30 I bet your favorite tool was several inches longer when you first bought it.
It was indeed Andy, i go through one of those 3/4 inch contenental gouges about every year and a 1 inch about every two years.
Shay
Hi Love the Wand. Can you please tell me what you used to finish the Wand?
I used Yorkshire Grit . I don't like wands to be super shiny so i didn't use a wax.
Shay
@@BBTurning Thank you.
@@murphchris5670 you are welcome.
Shay.
Can I come work at your shop? I can send you some pictures of my pieces!
I am afraid not. It is just me turning in my shed, no one else.
Shay
@@BBTurning Oh well! Worth a shot. But thank you very much for your videos they are very helpfull!
You are welcome.
Shay
How much would something like that wand likely fetch?
I sell standard wands like that for €15 on the stall Sherwood.
Shay.
@@BBTurning Thanks...I appreciate your getting back to me so quickly. You make beautiful things, good on you.
You are welcome Sherwood and thank you.
Shay.
How much do you sell them for?
€10 Ralph.

dull tools make horrible a noise
They do indeed Dennis.
