What a cool project and a great gift for a 4 year old. Really enjoyed watching the skew work. Have decided that I really need to work on those skills and have been watching as many skew videos as I can find. The bandsaw breakage was guaranteed since you were both making a video and had a narrow time window to complete the project.
Perfect timing! My granddaughters asked for Harry Potter style wands just yesterday. The tip about not poking eyes out had slipped my mind so your comment has allowed me to make the appropriate design changes. Thanks again Richard.
How timely. I just came in to watch videos after breaking a blade. It was a very tired blade with a lot of hours on it, but still sharp. Was going to change it out for a fresh blade, but it broke on what was supposed to be the last cut. And, I was cutting wand blanks out of scraps. Sigh.
Hi Cindy - I was going to show the wand in action but these days it doesn't seem acceptable to feature small boys on UA-cam no matter how innocent the activity.
Interesting, having just broken my 6th band saw blade I was wondering what I was doing wrong or if I had a bad batch. Several have broken with little or no pressure on the blade. I have the same Laguna saw (with break 😊) and don’t think I have the tension too high. Any thoughts? Love seems your skew work.
Behold, the Wand of Dragons! That's lovely figured wood and a very lucky young wizard. Had you cut the teeth, what yould you have used? Any tips for bandsaw safety? Many thanks for another instructive and inspiring video.
My bandsaw-safety basics are: have as little blade exposed as possible; get my fingers behind the blade as soon as possible; use push sticks/blocks; never force the wood into the blade; use a sharp blade. That's absolute basics. I use blades until they break or are very near breaking when micro splits develop on the back of the blade. On reflecton I had time to pyro some teeth or chip carve but not the time to think about it. The wand is a hit with the wizard.
Richard, do you release the blade tension when not in use? But, then, it may always be in use. Have you tried the high ductile low tension blades from Timberwolf?
I've always kept the blade tensioned. I've always resharpened my bandsaw blades ua-cam.com/video/StWj3KaklHI/v-deo.html and used them until they break or lose their set. I'd not heard of Timberwolf
Taking it for what it’s meant to be; a safe toy a four year old who will have lots of fun playing something that was made by The Maestro Himself! Go out to the shop and turn something real quick for the Little One. I’m not going to over think it just like I won’t get overly critical of someone’s spelling. ( My spelling is terrible )
As a retired toymsker so great to see someone thinking of kids safety I hope many follow your example
Wow, I've been watching a lot of fancy wood turning with epoxy. But this is so much more intricate, its fascinating.
That is an adorable wand for a 4 year old👍🏻❤️

Three more skew videos coming shortly.

Thanks for the adequate warning. I handled that blade break quite well!
Beautiful tool work. A true master at work.
You are amazing at handcrafting this work 🙂🙂
I hope the recipient appreciates that the wand was made by a Woodturning Master Wizard!!
This guy looks EXACTLY like the guy in my woodturning book.
Same, in my book though he wears extremely short shorts and 80's sideburns
@@EasyEisfeldt oh they're shorts? I thought they were boxers 😆😆👍

What is the name of your book, please?
Very timely Richard. I cut down a lot of African Olive about 4 weeks ago that is just that size.
I Know what I am about to do this weekend!
An excellent wand for a young wizard. Thank you for sharing!
It was very well received and nobody is allowed to touch it.
@@RichardRaffanwoodturning That is excellent to hear.
Looks great, I might need to try this.
Yes, you could see where the blade was bobbing where a crack was growing. Still makes you jump when the blade lets go!
Usually there's a bit more warning.
Great Video Richard - i have two Harry Potter fans in my house who would love wands!
A great wand for the aspiring young wizard! How about making push stick next though?
Why?
Can u school us on band saw blades, how to sharpen And best multipurpose blade... Width and tooth configuration
I use 10mm and 20mm 3 tpi blades. I show how I sharpen them in ua-cam.com/video/StWj3KaklHI/v-deo.html.

Elegant.
Show us a picture of the Wizard!

@@RichardRaffanwoodturning Darn. I guess that's the world today. It's nice to see your videos! Well done as always!
Magic!!

Was the lathe running in reverse as the wand was roughed out
If it was the chisel wouldn't be cutting except my magic.
Love the turning and detail on the handle. But....a two headed wand? Not sure that's cocher...:)

I wish you hadn't taken this job that encourages the use of majic! At the age of 4!
