We are a family of three (Wendy, Mauricio and Melina - Age 9), living in the suburbs of Washington DC (Vienna, VA) and getting our financial life in order! We earn a solid multi-6 figure income but in the past, we have struggled to pay for unexpected expenses and emergencies. We truly lived paycheck to paycheck even though we had a positive overall net worth because of our retirement savings.
In 2016 everything changed. We decided to get out financial act together and since that time we have gotten 1 full month ahead in our income (which means what we earn this month goes to pay next month's bills), paid off well over $200,000 worth of debt, started planning ahead and saving for big financial expenses (like summer camp, a new car, a down payment on a house to name just a few) and we are even paying CASH for my Mauricio's graduate school (he's changing careers and becoming an architect!).
We believe that there is no one size fits all plan for being successful with money so we are creating our own path. It is our theory that every family should evaluate their own financial struggles and determine the root cause of those issues. For us, those issues stemmed from committing to giving without looking at the impact on our own financial situation. We did not have debt because we bought fancy cars or clothes, we had debt because we chose to give away hundreds of thousands of dollars before we actually earned it. Now when we give, we give with cash that we have saved for the sole purpose of giving.
We understand the shame and guilt of having such a large income and not having enough cash to pay for an emergency...like when the transmission on the car goes out or there are large medical expenses. We have developed a plan that works for us and we are so proud of how far we have come since 2016!

Holy cow UA-cam, and ad after only one minute, are you kidding me?! I may have to put youtube red in my 2021 budget. LOL
My goal is not to get too stressed out next year. I feel like this year, my anxiety maxxed out. So 2021 I'm going to remember to breathe and let it go.
That may be the best goal yet!!!
Try Sara Beth yoga. It’s free on UA-cam.
My number one goal is to take care of my physical health in 2021... particularly my teeth (the dentist is very expensive!)
That is a great one! Dentists are horribly expensive!!!
Same! I have a chip that is hard to see but I plan to have it fixed when my ins kicks in Jan 1st.
I love your shawl. I think you will accomplish all your goals
AAWWW thanks. It is a super slouchy sweater vest that is open in the front...not sure what you call it. I got it at Cracker Barrel on their final clearance just before the pandemic started, of all places! Not gonna lie, it was a total impulse purchase! I don't regret it for a second! LOL
My main goal for 2021 is to definitely beef up our savings, the savings account really saved our butts this year and even though I've replenished everything we spent I dont want to get complacent and then have life smack us upside the head.
Love your goals! I have a bunch this coming year. Hopefully I can hit them! Number one is to have this baby and stay healthy.
Surviving pregnancy is a good goal. LOL. I hope you are doing well.
Hmmmmm..... my goal is to move and pay off debt from 2020 🙃
Great goals!!!
I’m here for your sparkling personality!
My goal is to create a solid income stream for myself and supporting my husband in creating his videography course.
Also, to birth this baby healthily in July 2021.
YYYEEEEAAAHHHHH!!!!!
One of my financial goals is to pay off my two smallest loans: about 13k.
Mine is to finish maxing my 2020 Roth, and then my 2021 Roth!🔥🔥
My goal is to get to know my self worth and to really take care of myself and not let me go
LOVE THAT!!!
I want to have 5K saved by mid-May. do daily singing exercises, daily Bible reading and lose my last 10 pounds I have to lose :)
Total of 5 goals: 1. Max out Roth IRA; 2. lose 25 lbs. (I lost the first 25 lbs this year); 3. Organize a majority of my house; 4. $4,000 in plant sales (in my backyard nursery); and, 5. pay my mortgage down to $110,000. All of these assume I have no help from my husband, which I never do.
My goal is to save up for a deck and sliding door for my house and then start paying off debt. I promised my husband in 2019 that in 2020 that we would get a deck and we did not do that, so we want to do that this year.
Main goal during 2021 is to get a permanent job - got laid off due to a reorg in May (yeah, and the covid-19 on top of that...). Have a temp job right now but I really would like to have a permanent one before 2021 runs out.
Becoming debt free!
Goal # 1 for 2021. I’m going to pick myself first. Whatever the situation, I chose me.
I LOVE that!!! Great goal!
Girl, you actually do have a sparkling personality 😂😁 I think my biggest goal is to read more books this year. My total goal is shamefully low, so I won’t say it, but it’s the goal I’ve been thinking about the most. I’d also like to continue losing weight, I’m starting to plateau so I gotta pick it up 😊 I haven’t figured out how much I want to save this year but that’s mostly bc my income changed, so once I find my footing with that I’ll pick a number. I’m excited for 2021!
Goal for paying down the mortgage cuz the house is the only debt. Have to work in the timeline, but a big push is planned in the new year. Thanks for the inspiration!!! :D
Good luck!!! You can do it!!
Visit all 8 of Virginia's counties that start with the letter "A": Accomack, Albemarle, Allegheny, Amelia, Amherst, Appomatox, Arlington & Augusta
Oooh...this is a fun goal!
I love this! just might have to do something like this myself!
This is an awesome goal!!!!
Complete our 6 month emergency fund
2021 Main Goals:.
1. Lose Weight
2. Finish paying off CC
(They are SMART I am just not writing those here)
Looking after my health, pay down debt, save for the future.
Down size into a 1 bedroom condo. And beef up my savings
Are you down sizing for any particular reason?
@@WendyValencia children are on their own and my 3 bedroom condo to big and to expensive with utilities and taxes.
I love hearing about other people's goals :D I shared a video this week about a silly way to open up your perspective before setting goals for the new year.
Still working on firming up my 2021 goals but they are falling into debt payoff/money, fitness and health.
My goal is to save for a down payment by the summer of 2021 and to have an emergency fund for 6 months worth of expenses by the end of 2021.
My number one goal is to save up for moving.
1) Earn business income 2) start regular strength training
Those are great! Strength training is so important for good health for life!
Sell our house, buy a new one, have a safe pregnancy. I didnt pause!
My goals are related to career and hobby projects...
Nice video, but are you aware of your audio issues? It’s quite distracting
Sorry, I tried out my mic way lower than normal so it would not be in the shot. Big mistake for a girl who talks with her hands!!!!
1. Pay off car 2. Pay off boat 3. Sell travel trailer 4. Active 40% savings rate at a minimum
WOAH! That is impressive!!!
@@WendyValencia We’ll see how far we get, car is almost paid off and boat is down to $22K, my medical policy at $1360 monthly ends in June so we may make it if we can stay focused. Phase for the year is results, not excuses, and I’m sticking to it!
Exercise
Max out emergency fund 😀
Get back to broke, aka out of the negative net worth.
I want to pay off $25k of debt for 2021!
My goals are to improve my health by dropping 10 lbs and getting a chip on a tooth fixed. Maybe some well checks.
This year I invested 25k in a Robinhood account and I planned to top that in 2021. I'm hoping to do a small amount of day trading.
I plan to repaint the inside of my home and do some landscaping.
My main goals in 2021 is to pay down $50K on my main home, reach $1mil in net worth and to read at least 24 books.
Tone up....break down and buy another car; i love my old one though :( and saving up for house in 6 years....YOU WILL KNOCK THAT DEBT OUT!!!!!
OOOOHHHH, long savings goall! Yeah!!! I feel ya on the car. We need to repair the transmission on our 2005 Expedition or get a new car too. I just don't want to spend that much on either one right now.
@@WendyValencia i have to fix the suspension ($1500) car is worth $900...2003 Honda Accord....being an adult is a trap smh lol
Being an adult is the dumbest thing I've ever done!!! LOL! Good luck on the car!
My number on goal is health and healing with some self care thrown in...all about looking after me and beating breast cancer and getting back to good health.
MERRY CHRISTMAS and thank you so much for all your videos..I love your sense of humour 💕❤️😜
Mine is simple FINANCIAL STABILITY..and though its achievable it certainly is a hard one now a days. Nevertheless, here i am at the starting line ready to go
Binge watched ALL of your videos yesterday and wanted to tell you how inspirational you are. I appreciate how real you have been throughout your journey. We have much smaller incomes and much less debt, but similar challenges along our journey. You've been so strong through everything, and I can't wait to see what else you share along the way. Thanks for being real!
Watching videos like this helps me to form my own goals! Next year is still so up in the air, I'm trying not to set any goals that will tax my mental health. I think an achievable goal is to upgrade my home office. The desk chair I was using "temporarily" starting back in April is not very comfortable!
My financial goal is to pay off my lowest student loan balance of $3080. I am only working but set to graduate this coming May. All the best with your goals!
My main goal in 2021 is to finish saving for a down payment for a house by my 25th birthday in march and buy a house in the summer. I also want to save at least 20% of my income for retirement.
Paying down debt and get more healthy in 2021. Loose 15 lbs and reduce debt by $10 - 12,000?
Like cookies... one for each hand! Very doable...
Money
My goal is to invest $40k! 😁
Yup. Healthier and 20 lbs in 6 months.
My number one goal is to purge and organize our home.
Save emergency fund and pay off debt
#1 goal - pay off my credit card debt
My number one goal is to pay down all of the credit cards on the business. I would like to pay them all off but I'm not sure about that so I will say I would like to pay down at least $10,000 next year on the credit cards
You can do it!!!!
Pay off 10,000 in credit cards and not spend any on them.
We had to cut ours up and not have them for about 10 years until we REALLY learned to manage our money
Work on debit and obtain my AIC designation
You can do it!!!!
