  • Come budget with me 2021 style (Which means budgeting to pay off debt)! Okay, our monthly family budget in excel (zero based budget - cause we only budget zero-based in the Valencia house), is pretty much the same excel budget we have been doing for years. LOL But every month in our monthly spending, there are always surprises...and March 2021 will be no different.

We are a family of three (Wendy, Mauricio and Melina - Age 9), living in the suburbs of Washington DC (Vienna, VA) and getting our financial life in order! We earn a solid multi-6 figure income but in the past, we have struggled to pay for unexpected expenses and emergencies. We truly lived paycheck to paycheck even though we had a positive overall net worth because of our retirement savings.
In 2016 everything changed. We decided to get out financial act together and since that time we have gotten 1 full month ahead in our income (which means what we earn this month goes to pay next month's bills), paid off well over $200,000 worth of debt, started planning ahead and saving for big financial expenses (like summer camp, a new car, a down payment on a house to name just a few) and we are even paying CASH for my Mauricio's graduate school (he's changing careers and becoming an architect!).
We believe that there is no one size fits all plan for being successful with money so we are creating our own path. It is our theory that every family should evaluate their own financial struggles and determine the root cause of those issues. For us, those issues stemmed from committing to giving without looking at the impact on our own financial situation. We did not have debt because we bought fancy cars or clothes, we had debt because we chose to give away hundreds of thousands of dollars before we actually earned it. Now when we give, we give with cash that we have saved for the sole purpose of giving.
We understand the shame and guilt of having such a large income and not having enough cash to pay for an emergency...like when the transmission on the car goes out or there are large medical expenses. We have developed a plan that works for us and we are so proud of how far we have come since 2016!

I use a CPA! Very worth it to prevent any errors or audits! I always recommend everyone use one for taxes! 💯

Sounds very stressful Wendy, I would take all the food help you can get! Congrats on the new job - as you say things will settle down. Good luck. I always pay an accountant to do my tax - much less stress AND they know what they are doing. Well done Mauricio.

So nice to see you! We always get our taxes done professionally. I don’t understand the ins and outs of the funds we own (retirement assets and inherited money), and I would have no idea how to claim the income or take any losses. Well worth the $650, although I cringe every year when we have to pay it.

Where does the debt stand right now? I have missed your videos! It's hard being a working momma! Your work/life balance is admirable!! I discovered your videos 2 or 3 years ago and your debt level inspired me to tackle my own, and now I am in such a different financial situation, so Thank You for that!!

I'm not sure why but your videos aren't showing up for me anymore when you post. This one just randomly showed up today. I fully don't understand these algorithms.

Make sure you are monitoring your child on Roblox- strangers can message your kids on there. We had to delete the app for safety reasons.

Hi just watch a linked video about how you got into debt and you mention paying a surgery for your sister in law I'm wondering if I can get more information on what kind of dr did she see for that because I feel I have the same or similar problem with my jaw and no dentist or dr has ever been able to help me with my pain please 🥺
Hope you can answer thanks 😊
