    Are there any maintenance hacks you use when you're bike packing? Let us know!

      Dental floss works better than a nylon thread.

    • @CrazyBikerGuy
      @CrazyBikerGuy 6 років тому

      Always have a needle and dental floss, cable ties preferably 3 long 2 med so you can cut then to size, spear tube if you running tubes like me (prefer a higher psi than a tubless offers for my wheels currently). Doesn't hurt to have a multi tool of you or even a swiss army knife (saved me loads of times).

      get a bike as simple as possible, good luck finding 650b tiers or tubes rim,, or bleed kit or 10-speed parts, derailleur , brake leavers-shifters , in a small town in the middle of nowhere go 26 , v brake, 3x8 speed,

    • @xtianeskay5166
      @xtianeskay5166 6 років тому +2

      I use a hub gear so all derailleur issues are not for me. I also use runflat tires, never punctured in over 38000km. Sometimes it is helpful to carry duct tape and metal wire when travelling.

      Dump tubeless for show-off on a bike parade of in your local bike park with lifts, sag car, ambient bike shops, etc. Use puncture protection liners and take a tire (not tube) patch with you - better take an extra folding tire.

    I rode 5500kms across Australia over 21 days as part of the 2018 Indian Pacific Wheel Race and not once did I clean my chain! I did apply a very high quality wax lube every day. I did not have any trouble with my chain or drive train during the entire ride. No other racers that I'm aware of cleaned their chain and I personally would not recommend getting involved with diesel under any circumstances. If your chain worries you on epic rides, just stop at a bike shop half way through your journey and get the chained replaced, quick and easy solution but not necessary.

    If the cut in a tire isn't too big you can apply a tube patch to the inside of the tire the way you would for a tube.

  • @laurelrunlaurelrun

    make sure you can get the tubeless lock ring unscrewed if you are planning on swapping it out for a tube in the case of a flat. I've seen several that needed pliers. another good reason to carry that little multi-tool.

  • @aquilesmasdmd

    GCN you need to check out the dynaplug system. I keep one in my saddle bag as I run tubeless tires. A friend turned me on to this. But it looks like a little silver pill and has all you need to plug a tubeless tire and cut the plug end. It’s fast and easy. This is perfect for bikepacking.

    Diesel evaporates really poorly, that's why all diesel pistols are usually grimy at all the gas stations. Now if you degrease with petrol - that evaporates very well! Still wouldn't recommend it, unless it's a special occasion like this.

    There is a great lube with a built in cleaner called ATB Lube .Cleans and lubes at the same time. (Absolutely The Best) . There are 3 weights for different purposes and times of year. i use the medium (red) ATB Lube after every ride and wipe it off with a clean rag. and I have never had a chain problem. I have never detected stretch or cassette wear. My chains last 3k-5k miles and they look and perform like they are new. I only replace them just so I can tell my friends, "I just changed my chain.".

    Most sealant won't seal anything above 40psi, as most have been designed for mountain bikes. That's fine for some kinds of tires people use for bike-packing but if you're using sealant for pressures over 40psi Orange Endurance Sealant is perfect.
    Also in very dry climates sealant can dry to a crust in literally weeks, so always add additional sealant if needed.

    Running tubeless on a touring setup seems like a pretty silly idea to me. Sure punctures are less likely on the whole, but mendability is definitely more of a consideration. I just run clinchers and carry spare tubes. Way easier.

    • @laurentp89

      @mramazingtroy 6 років тому +1

      Running a light weight tyre on a bike packing trip is more the issue. I think schwalbe now do tubeless in their marathon range. If it is as puncture resistant as their tube version this is a winner.

    In Morocco, they have a washing powder for clothes called "Tide" pronounced "Teed" (in both Moroccan and French). This stuff must be banned everywhere else because it is so strong. All of the small kiosks you see in any village sell this in small quantities and it will clean anything (and I mean anything). You can make up whatever concentration you wish for the job at hand with water. However, you will soon reduce the concentration you though appropriate. If you knock up a weak solution in a pan for instance, you can wash you clothes, your bike, your chain and your dirty hands with it. Also the small village kiosks sell individual sachets/ tubes of everything, so you can buy shampoo/ toothpaste etc as you go, by the wash. An hour by the river deals with it all. If you give one of the ladies at the river a few Dirhams they'll even smack your clothes on a rock for 30 minutes, they will never have been so clean! Ride on! Tim

    Duct tape! Back in the 90s I used to line the inside of my (of course clincher) MTB tyres with Duct tape (the real thing not cheap rip offs.../see the pun there...lol). The lining was super effective at keeping thorns off the tube, even barely stopped a nail mm before it punctured the tube. I suppose nowadays with modern tyres with the linings of e.g. Schwalbe this is not much of a gain, but....maybe a little bit more protection? (marginal gains in touring?)

    Dear GCN tech, have you thought about a "tech I would like to see" section? For example I would think that by now we could have a bike computer integrated into the handle bars and stem. Plenty of room for a LED display and would increase the aero without increasing the weight.
    Also with so much charging required perhaps we could also get induction charging for the all the ANT Bluetooth gizmos.
    Given that seemingly every bike I see on the road now has a bike computer how about incorporating it into the bike from the get go. I mean would you buy a car without a speedo or sat nav???

      This channel has turned to marketing/info-tainment. No tourer in his right mind would ever run this equipment to remote places around the world. 2-3 days, sure. A few weeks plus? Never.

    • @mortenreippuertknudsen3576
      @mortenreippuertknudsen3576 6 років тому +2

      U can run that kind of equipment 2-3 weeks in europe, no problem - done it for 10 years.
      Just bring spokes, nipples, vavlecores, ducktape, zipties, chainlinks, brakepads, extra gear/brake wire, chainringbolt, regular patchkit, tirebot, etc.
      When i toured on 25mm veloflex i always brought an extra tyre. When i toured on tubulars i always brought an extra tub, glue, needle etc. Have toured for the past two years on 35mm Compass tubless tyres with a bit more punture and wear protection safer/faster gravelriding.
      I even bring a cassette lockring tool when i tour on Campagnolo cassettes which i did for 8 years.
      - last year i broke a spoke 25k from the nearest town on the seadykes of Grande Marie between Agde and Narbone. Tubeless seal was of course broken by a spoke penetrating the rimtape so i had a flat, unseated tyre, a broken rimtape and a wheel with a spoke missing. Didn’t have a lockring tool with me as i rode a Shimano XTR cassette that year :-( but as i stood there i figured that I’ve never brought a chainwip either…
      Ended up getting dirty when i emptied sealant from my tire as i put in a spare tube (latex with sealent), repaired the rim tape with duct tape so it wouldt tear the tube and straightenedt out the wheel so i thought i would be safe to coninue offroad until i could reach propper tarmac (this is where discbrakes comes in handy - your wheel does not need to dead straight, it just needs to be reasonably even tensioned).
      - in the next town i found a bike rental shop (on a sunday i france!) where i borrowed a chain wipp and a cassette lockring tool so i could replace the spoke and align the wheel properly… continued rideing that setup on allroad surafces for the remaning 20 days (and 8months later until i finaly found time to remove the latex tube and reseal the tubeless tyre - latex tube was off course imposible to remove in one piece with 8months old sealent between tyre end tube)
      a few days after i broke the spoke i realised i could just have removed cassette body and axle if needed (DT 180 hubs) and i never needed the lockring tool or the chain wipp - its just about being creative and thinking clearly.

      650b is just another name for 27.5". Not really difficult to find. Any tubeless setup is easily converted to tubed in 5 minutes. I wouldn't rely on the sealant alone, but there's a lot that fixes itself and a lot that can be fixed before that's needed.

    My Ultegra Di2 6800 is shifting flawlessly. On the small 34T ring it is totally silent. On the big 50T ring there is a very slight noise. It is the same regardless of the rear cog. Nothing is rubbing. Sound is there even after thorough clean and lube. Chain and cassette and rings are not worn. It is a subtle sound that seems to come from the back but I would like the big ring to be as silent as the small one. Is this normal? Is there a fix?

    • @neighborino
      @neighborino 6 років тому

      I have the same noise on my bike (same chain ring too). I've checked the front derailleur cage and the B Screw setting/upper jockey clearance. I've narrowed it down to a stretched chain (making contact noise as it meets the cassette), jockey wheels needing a clean (less likely as these are cleaned in situ on a weekly basis), or the chainring being spaced too far out creating too much of an extreme chain line angle. Hope this helps, good luck!

I want to get into road biking for training and to have fun (maybe get into triathalons later). I have a budget of about $3000 for equipment (i.e. bike, shoes, lycra, kit, etc.). Any suggestions for what type of bike I should get? I'm 5'10-177.8 cm and 135 lbs - 61.235 kilos if that helps

      Ivar Brouwer there'd only be a problem if you have caliper brakes. Or if the spoke got tangled.

      Alexander Sallons, thnx! I’m still using my cantilever crossbike for these kind of trips... not ideal in terms of breaking but otherwise it’s great!

      Ivar Brouwer make sure you are using straight pull spokes! Otherwise you need a chain whip...

      I carry a fibre-fix kevlar spoke that can replace any spoke length/position fairly easily and packs super small.
      You can also get lightweight cassette tools/wrench for touring from likes of Wolftooth Components. They are pricy though. I sometimes compromise with tools... ie. carry the most specialist bit you need and hope to borrow/hack the rest. Like, carry a cassette lockring tool and borrow a wrench off a local to turn it. For chainwhip, just use the chain on the bike.

      Vintage Max-icar hubs was desigh for tool less spoke replacement: velo-orange.blogspot.dk/2007/01/maxi-car-hubs.html For modern hubs plenty of hubs allows you to remove axel and body without removing the cassette. DTswiss and Ritchey comes to mind. I think i can even do it on my Campy record hubs.
