    Here's my tips:
    1. Don't plan to go too far every day. I ruined my bike packing trip by trying to fit in just over 100 miles each day. By the time camp was set up etc there was no time to do anything but eat and sleep.
    2. Bring a warmer sleeping bag, I got caught out but I DID have a space blanket which saved me from freezing
    3. Possibly get a bigger tent. I used a very small, lightweight 1 man tent.. it was a bit of a nightmare.

    Great tips! I always tell touring cyclists to pack half of what you think you need. Having extra space during your trip is perfect advice!

    I often do the water fillup at churches. More than that, I have also camped behind churches. Who's gonna kick you out? Once I found a church on my route that looked like a good choice, so I called the number and talked to a nice man. Asked him if there were water spigots outside. He said no, but they never lock the doors so just go in and help yourself! I slept there twice on a padded church bench!

    Great tips! Need to try the duct tape on inside of tyres as plagued with punctures on last trip. I also keep an eye out for cattle water troughs near an wild camping spot as any water is useful for example to find the puncture in my tube and also use it for boiling water for hot drinks.

    i used a rock that was "somewhat" shaped enough to grab into the crankbolt, but i don't see how a space blanket can not take up any space. I will try that out though.

    I don't know what puncture vines you run over in Europe, but in the states I can tell you that duct tape will definitely not stop our "goathead" thorns over here. Most bike packers have not discovered the pocket shower. They are really appreciated after a hot, long day in the saddle, where you can have your own private sweat removing shower without heading for a hotel.

    What shoes do you wear when off the bike? I’m on the lookout for something that is easy to pack into the saddle pack or handlebar bag

    • @KeepSmilingAdventures
      @KeepSmilingAdventures  2 роки тому +1

      I personally just wear whatever shoes I'm riding in. I think most people take sandals. But if i was going to carry a spare pair of shoes for off the bike id probably opt for a plimsole type of shoe.

    Lots of great ideas, my friend! As for duck tape, I wonder if gaf tape would work just as well. At home, somewhere in my garage, I have something like duct tape but it’s thicker and somewhat padded. I don’t remember what it is or what it’s for but I wonder if it would work inside tires for added protection.The only concern I would have with this, which probably isn’t much of a concern, yes it would add a little bit of weight, but maybe not significantly. I need to go find a roll of tape and see what kind of tape it is.

    I think the bike scootering or rolling technique is fairly obvious to most cyclists, or would become so when encountering a downhill. That said, I recall my teenage daughter's joy when I taught her how to scooter a few years ago - I didn't know that she didn't know it. I seem to recall doing it naturally as a child, however we played outside more back then, went off on adventures, lit fires etc.

    Once my left pedal just fall off my bike in the middle of what looks like a forest, apparently the quick release latch broke and the pedal just come loose. I guess they call it quick release for a purpose, it has tendency to release itself at most importunate moment.

    • @KeepSmilingAdventures
      @KeepSmilingAdventures  2 роки тому +1

      They don't stick very well at all, and don't last. They are more for a get you home solution not a full fix. Gluing patches on lasts way longer

    I don't understand the concept of "picking up extra spares" along the way. If it's something you're going to need, just put it in that extra space before you leave home, and then you don't have to compromise, buying a crappy jacket because it's all you can find along the way...

    • @KeepSmilingAdventures
      @KeepSmilingAdventures  2 роки тому

      It's not about compromising, it's about having room for things you might end up needing or wanting along the way. Didnt say dont take all the essential things.
