Devin Townsend's range and versatility are the first things that come to mind when you dig into his singing, but when you really start to study his approach, you realize that his airflow management is trick up his sleeve, or the man behind the curtain. His soaring aggressive singing is the end result of dialed in relationship between compression and support. NOT just a natural 'god-like' ability that only he really has. In this lesson, we analyze a commonly 'reacted to' video performance of "Kingdom" but we dive into the performance looking to learn, experiment with our own voices, and ultimately, get some takeaways from a true master! - Розваги

I’m bringing my laptop/logic and mic into the car literally everyday right now trying to record a cover of Soundgardens ThenDay I tried To Live and that chorus is insanely hard for me. It’s frustrating not being able to hit that high night while still sounding distorted. I’m going to skip today and practice w this video.
@@studiomacleod I'd invite you to consider letting your falsetto drive the ship with that note. You can put a lot of resistance against your falsetto to get a really powerful note. However...let it go up into your nasal cavity! If it's really high, the note won't have anywhere to go lol.

I saw DT live in February, and I honestly believe that because he cares so little about how he looks and sounds, he was able to bring out some incredible vocals from the beginning. You talk a lot about how we can’t be afraid to sound funny when learning and reinforcing our techniques and I think Devin knew that very early on.

That is 100% correct. I use to be scared to make crazy sounds with my voice but since I’ve stop giving a shit I can actually scream and it sound good. My range is limited but progress is progress!
Devins transitions between heavy and cleans are some of the best I’ve ever heard, definitely my favorite vocalist at the moment
Such great control singing when playing live as well compared to other vocalists when singing live who don't sound the same. Sounding out of breath at times. GREAT control of his voice when he sings.
I think that technique is why he can still scream and sing like this at age 51, but also Devin has the perfect storm of a tough-as-nails "voice box" and perfect nasal/oral resonance on those pitched fry screams. Its not fair. Hahaha

I remember during a clinic someone asked about his voice and Devin said this about his voice.
"I had a good choir teacher. I went to a guy in LA when I did the Steve Vai project. I went in and he said sing for me. I went WAHAHHAHAH. And he's like well your not going to be able to sustain that. Your voice is gunna be gone within a couple years. And it's now 25 years later, so..... *smiles* hooray! Don't eat tomatoes, unless it's on pizza, then eat tons of it."
Imagining the neighbors in their living room across the street just hearing "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA IIIIIIIII'M FIIIIIIIIIINEEEEEE!!!!"
Il be honest, i think your scream technique is different from Devins. When you force your distortion is sounds more like you're letting go, and letting your vocal chords disconnect intermittently. but i think devin does the opposite. he compresses them together so much that the vocal chords cant move. you can hear sometimes he accidentally creates a vocal whistle during his screams, and i think this is an indication of how hes getting that noise. You can hear in his really early stuff with Steve Vai that this whistle tone used to be even more prominent in his screams.
To summarize, i think you are getting a more open false chord scream by pushing to vocal break, while devin is not letting his vocals break, and compressing his vocal chords and forcing more fry overtones.
You might be right... I THINK though that its the same approach with just different machines... different voices do different things when pushed, pulled and exercised.

@MachineRite Maybe it's the same approach and technique but comes out sounding different when Chris does it because his vocal tract is a different shape than Devin's? As Chris says, he's not trying to emulate anyone (Devin in this case), rather borrow from their style and technique and make it his. I'm just spit-balling here of course...
True. Devin calls it a "castrated cat" sound lol. It's all air and resistance. He uses absolutely no true vocal in his screams (Devin). That's how his voice stays clean and without hurting. Adjusting the amount of resistance changes the pitch. But I think Chris is dead on with the explanation! The actual scream is pretty gentle in terms of the effort, but the volume is loud.
I agree with you mate. I think Devin uses more fry screaming than false chords.
His early work in Strapping was fair less educated than I believe it is now!

I've been able to get shades of Devin's compression based grit and screams through my own practice. The key seems to be keeping your throat very open, which you can see from how open and wide Devin gets his mouth in the performance. As insane as this song is, Deadhead has even more range and aggressive vocals from Devin. It really blows my mind what he does.
Exactly what another vocal coach said about Heavy Devy-His performance makes it look like he's doing stuff that's way more intense than it actually is.

Sorry, third comment 😂 I was originally introduced to Devin Townsend unknowingly as a kid listening to Steve Vai sex and religion album with my dad! And then I heard Deadhead about 5 years ago and realised it was the same singer. That Steve Vai album would be cool to break down if you haven't already 🙏🤘

In my local karaoke pub I love to sing harder metal songs with growling, death metal vocals. Sadly I haven't been able to achieve singing with vocal fry yet, but I think that your graphic descriptions are helping me little by little to achive that goal. Good stuff!
Fantastic video! Just one thing, in his screams he adds a layer of whistle overtone. If you notice he just doesn't give some of those notes with distortion, you can also hear a note above it an octave higher. This is called whistle screaming and he uses it a lot, especially for those insane screams in strapping young lad where he screams around c6 to c7. Your video still was very good, and as someone that can scream fairly well but is trying to get clean singing in order it has very good insights. Keep it up!

Very impressive work Chris, your analytical ear is fascinating and you're so adaptive. Would love to see you taking on Mike Pattons repertoire, since I consider him to be one of the most versatile and interesting vocalists.
Single best video on Devin's technique, thank you Chris! I've been racking my brains as I was convinced there was an element of well supported mixed voice (standing front row at a very small venue, his screams were roughly equal in volume to his singing) but other videos were contradicting that first intuition..
Listen to how loud his voice sounds even on the extremely light and airy head voice parts. That means the mic is gained up high, going into a lot of compression. You can scream and sing pretty gently and still have it sound equally as massive as the loud parts. Let the tech do it for you!
@@TheMalikTwins Of course, I'm a professionnal sound engineer and love my compression :) but I was talking about vocal technique here, specifically loud clean and loud screamed parts

Thank you! You said it well, I’m a guitarist but love vocalist but love the hard stuff. And watching other videos to analyze devin they don’t know. They just say hope he isn’t hurting himself or other. You can do it right. I love your vids because I’m a closet singer in my genre, but i know you can sing n scream n have no problem. I do it in jam now n never cough like other ppl who are singing in my place.

Yeah Devin a freak of nature. He has so much control throughout his entire range it ridiculous. Most singers have a comfort zone within their range I've noticed. Devin just is all over in every song nearly lol
Hey Chris, not into reaction videos usually, but I like your more active approach here very much. Now that you've made videos on two of my favorite singers Spencer and Devin, it would be great if you make one about Mikael Akerfeld of Opeth. I would like to learn more about screams and growls in the lower register. I feel that low tone is way harder because of the contrast of a low lyrinx position and the high closure/compression feeling.

I know you're doing a voice analysis but having the lyric's on screen or real close by will help you know & understand what he's singing. Also, you may notice he sings in 2 different tones @ times. It's because a female usually sings this song with him, hitting the higher but gentler notes.

Hi Chris! I think you're spot on with most of your explanation (and performance!), but later on (for the lyrics "I come undone" and for the chorus/heavier passages starting with "Now I see the way I'm headed'), I do believe that the technique you use is not Townsend's. I'm no expert, but I don't think it's down to two people having different anatomies; I think that, as other have said, roughly speaking, you might be more oriented towards letting your voice break, whereas Devin uses a more compressed fry scream. Something quite common in melodic death metal (for instance - or In Gojira), but somehow he manages to be particularly melodic. actually, Maybe you've even reevaluated yourself, now that a year has passed? ^^ It would be cool to see you delve into even more extreme metal territory, by the way! Anyways, great video as always!
My favorite artist not only musically but also personally wise. I recommend analyzing Deadhead Royal Albert Hall, that one is beyond incredible.

Chris, you're awesome! I would like to recommend a singer named Daniel Gildenlöw, from a band called Pain of Salvation. He's an incredible singer, with a very good vocal range. I think you would like to analyse him. I recommend the songs King of loss, Sisters and Iter Impius.
