By the way, I didn’t have a lot of commentary about Devin Townsend, but he’s been another big influence of mine since the Strapping Young Lad days. I could do a video on just him alone, in fact I just might.
PLEASE
I've been trying to gently suggest some Strapping Young Lad for a while!
Please, good sir! Would love to know some of your favorites from HevyDevy
Please do!
JUST DOOOOOO IT
I watched Dev do Deadhead from about 7 feet away a few years back. He was fighting a phlegm monster the whole set and somehow still managed to shove out that high note. His voice was pretty cooked for the rest of the tune, but it actually helped him sound better for the rest of the set.
WILL YOOOOU SAAAAAAAVVVVVEEEE MEEEEEEEEEEEE
Devin has a great voice, but I found it interesting that he doesn't actually like to sing and the way he practiced his screams was very unhealthy. He said he would scream until he tasted blood, let his voice heal for a couple of days and then he was able to sustain those screams longer. He also does not recommend going that route when learning to scream. Every time I've heard him, his voice sounds very healthy, so it was surprising to learn he taught himself in an unhealthy way. I guess the guy's superhuman.

@@bacicinvatteneaca Here's the interview, if you want to watch it. ua-cam.com/video/MeYVwu1qEh4/v-deo.html
Anthony, if not allowed, please delete this comment.
That's awesome! I saw him once and he was like 2 feet from me. It was one of the best shows of my life! I was honored to shake his hand. Hevy Devy is one of my favorite artists. I hope to see him again one day! :)
Seeing Devin Townsend in the video really warmed my heart, he is so talented and under rated! My favorite artist of all time deserves a little more spotlight! Thank you.
You're actually an incredible vocalist like DAMN DUDE. So good
Watching you point out basic vocal impossibilities is legit cool
Dev was one of the last shows I saw before the first Covid lockdown and he nailed that Deadhead note flawlessly. I had chills for basically his entire set.
Same... I saw him at the mid-UK election show at the Roundhouse. What a way to let go of all that could have been
Same. I think I saw him in Philly on the last show of the last US tour before the rest was cancelled. UnFUCKINGbelieveable as always.
@@leomulvihill1468 I was at that show too, but I also got to catch Spite at the Voltage Lounge two days later so Dev wasn't my last show
Devin townsend is a metal genius. So underrated. Also that deep purple vocal cover you were doing was amazing
I was doing work for Devin "back in the day" (late 90s, early 00s) and he really went through a transition from abusing his voice constantly to becoming disciplined and mindful of what he should and shouldn't do. He's got projection out of the ass, however he now respects where the line exists with his voice and works within that rather than blowing it out all of the time. Back when he was touring SYL in the City days through to chicken feather and Fizzy, he'd just crack the fuse every night, every song and just suffer. Man, no wonder one of his balls went full-on Tetsuo.
Devin is an insane vocalist
Angra - Speed , the final part - This is a Brazilian band, and the vocalist André Matos has without a doubt one of the best voices, if not the best, that we had here, and it would be amazing to see you singing to one of their songs.
There's something so sonically pleasing about the tone of Devin's high screams. It's like they cut right into your soul. So let's do some more of his high screams! Underrated song of his, but could you do the section at around 5:22, after the cool lead guitar section, in Planet Rain? From the sounds of it I don't think it's necessarily the pitch that's what sounds hard, but it's just the combination of intensity and melody. (Highly recommended listening to the cool lead guitar section too, starts around 4 mins in).
It's mostly the production. He has an incredible fry scream, together with TONS AND TONS of layers he puts in overdubs it's incredible
I dunno exactly why, but the scatting at the end of "The Sign" coupled with a slow zoom just tickled me. Joy.
This guy is effing great! Glad I went down that rabbit hole.
I see you have finally arrived. Heavy Devy has been expecting you.
The part in Drone Corpse Aviator by Archspire at 1:45. If you haven’t heard this band, they’re brilliant. They make actually memorable tech death, killer hooky parts. And their vocalist said he takes a ton of inspiration from tech n9ne :D
P.S. The part at the 3 minute marker is super sick too, but I thought I’d go easy on ya ;)
Yes please!!!
Listened to that album all day at work. It never fails to amaze me and crack me up all at the same time.
@@Powermad-bu4em it makes me laugh too, like that disbelief that a human being can write/play that, it’s wild😂
@@jacee8094
When Oli throws out one of his crazy hock-a-lugie things at the end of a line I lose my shit. He does it all so seamlessly.
I mean, anything by Archspire tbh. Ollie is fucking nuts.
Glad to see you uploading again Anthony! These are incredibly entertaining!
I'm glad you touched on how singers will sing things in a lower key or whatever when they're on tour. Matt Heafy has talked about this at length after he torched his voice in the early days of Trivium. Some vocalists like Sam Carter will actually scream parts of the song that he normally sings because screaming (when done properly) is actually a lot easier on your throat than belting is. Low growls, especially, in my experience, if you know how to do them you can pretty much keep one going perpetually and never feel it. It literally isn't actually even engaging your vocal cords.
Spencer Sotelo from Periphery does some insanely high and well controlled vocals from 5.08 to 5.38 in the song Satellites.
“Shades” or “Dead Rope Machine” by Rishloo. Wouldn’t say impossible, but less known and the last sections with them prolonged high notes are beyond beautiful.
Great choice!
I definitely second some Rishloo
Yay! You finally did "Child In Time"....and made it look easy. So jealous!
Watching you just crush that section of Hook gives me so much joy! Keep it up!
Devin's parts on Sex and Religion are insane. Still My Bleeding Heart has some absurd vocal stuff for example.
My fingers are numb, right now, yeah my fingers are numb...because I deprived my brain of oxygen
That part in "In my dreams with you" where he does that aaa ya ya ya ya ya ya ya.
Dude, you really brightened my day. I have struggled with "The Kill" in the original key for about 12 years now but as of now i am slowly but steady getting there. It would have killed me, if you'd just did that on the spot. Thanks for showing me, that yes, it's hard. I'll keep practicing :D
Huh.
I saw people talking about "The Kill" and I got really, really excited 'cos I thought they meant Napalm Death...
This was nice too though . . . I guess.
you referenced to 30 seconds the Mars?
That chorus and the bridge was the hardest one to sing in high notes.
I just recently did a deep dive into the music of Devin Townsend, so it was great to see him on the thumbnail for this video, and to see you do that high note justice in your own way!
Omg YES you did Hook again!!! Please do a full cover???? 👉👈🥺 Love seeing the love of the song and singer when you sing this song!
Devin is a beast and I really enjoy his work.
Another wonderful video, touching upon my fav songs, 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
My goodness, you are talented. Let's just binge your channel this week.
Honestly? I'm putting my vote in for either The Grudge by Tool, the famous scream that's like 25 seconds long, or the scream from Intro / Bombs Away by Foxy Shazam just for how raw it is.
He actually tried The Grudge in one of these videos
Eric Nally fell off so bad it's really unfortunate
One of the hardest and most beautiful scream I've heard on power metal are at the beggining of the song "Unicorn" of the band Altaria.
Actually it's 2 that put together sound incredible.
The first start at 0:07 and is very long with a constant vibrato. While the second start at 0:13 with lover volume but is one of the most piercing I've ever heard.
Good luck if you wanna try it 🤘
OMG, it is so refreshing to hear someone as eclectic as you are! I don't know anyone else that knows all these songs also lol.
It's crazy how easy and effortless you make this look. It would be forgiven to overlook the years of intense and exhaustive mastery of the techniques that make this possible.
John Popper is absolutely amazing! He comes to my home town every now and then to play at his friends bar here, who I believe he used to be in a band with. Anyways I taught myself how to play the harmonica, heavy metal style, because of his music! He is very easy to sing though compared to others.
It'd be awesome to hear you attempt Chino's (Deftones) hiss scream in songs like Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away) at 3:14, Fireal at 1:08, and Bender (Sevendust) at 3:20
Up!
Oh yeah sure, request the notes that caused the singer to blow his vocal cords out (deftones)
@@bumish pretty much 🥲
@@bumish Chino did and still does a variety of scream techniques, what makes you say that these are the specific ones that harmed his voice?
Yeees! I'm so glad you did the 'Words darker than their wings' one!
your passion makes me smile
A friend of mine got to open for Devin at a local bar like...7 or 8 years ago. Talked gear and songwriting, was so so cool. No idea how he landed the gig, there were far bigger metal bands in town, but it was an unforgettable experience.
Care to give your friend a name drop? :) Always looking for different metal!
Would be fun to see the second chorus from Suggestions by SOAD, where Serj jumps around his vocal range and different vocal registers
Watching you rock that riff from Hook was great.
John Popper will always be one of my favorite vocalists ever Blues traveler is so good
It would be perfect to see you perform some Periphery staff. Racecar or Blood Eagle especially
I saw Devin Townsend. I clicked
1st song: Child In Time - Deep Purple (I've been requesting this from the 1st impossible songs to sing)
2nd song - Words Darker Than Their Wings (also another song I've been requesting for ages)
Haven't finished the video yet, but it's already my favourite impossible songs to sing ❤
Saw SYL live when I was fifteen. Scared the absolute shit outta me. He is a terrifyingly insane dude to watch live. Absolutely brilliant
gotta love Twisted Sister, CLASSIC Rock Band. also it's funny how you joke around when you mess up so you dont get too frustrated, it's just fun watching you try to do this stuff and not lose your composure.
How could you miss out the best bit of all 30 Seconds To Mars songs when Jared just goes "IT'S MORBIN' TIME!"
It's a morbillion times better than anything else.
I have a request for you, if you’re up for it. “Shout” by Tears For Fears, but in the style of Type O Negative.
There was a conversation in the TON subreddit recently about the songs we fans wish they could have had a chance to cover before Peter Steele passed away. “Shout” by Tears For Fears was mentioned and among one of the most popular suggestions. It would have been absolutely perfect. Then I thought of you! I believe you’re one of the only people who could give us anything even close. 🤘
Jyrki 69 (The 69 Eyes and some other music groups) has a vocal range to cover Steele and he has covered some TON songs (the most famous is The 69 Cats - Black No. 1). So if Anthony does not cover that then I recommend suggesting that Jyrki would cover that. :)
Heavy Devy! 🤘
Dude your blues traveler was amazing
loved seeing you light up at the start of the blues traveler ''fast part''
Love to see you do Devin Townsend's "Kingdom" any of the long notes that go from growl low to opera high.
It's deceptive, because in spite of how much volume and projection Devin seems to be throwing out, it's all very relaxed and controlled. Mic technique plays a big part of that, knowing how to sound louder than you are singing and what comes out of the other end. Not his ass, mind. The speakers.
@@TristanJCumpole I'm aware of the techniques he's using as well as using different posture when using different singing and find it fascinating. I'm just curious if he can do it all too. 😅
I'm certain that Anthony has identified certain aspects of what Devin does and has build up a profile around that. At some point there are very specific anatomical characteristics (eg. Mercury) that can only be copied up to a certain point. What's cool about this is when a musician sees these things within themselves and lean into their own specificities and unique qualities. Sometimes it's good (ie. Mercury, Townsend, Dio, Dickinson, Halford, etc), sometimes it's just anus (Durst's whining bitch voice).
tool - the grudge (you'll know the scream when you hear it); or, if you want to see if you can sing it without destroying your voice - ticks & leeches
Yo, great effort on The Kill. That song is a beast to sing, especially the higher version. Love the stuff man, keep at it!
Grew up on Blues Traveler, they had such a fantastic sound. You had me singing along lol.
Anthony, please please please do Lorna Shore “To the Hellfire” breakdown. As soon as I saw people attempting it, I thought of you nailing it.
Oh hell yes. I've wanted you to do a segment on Devin Townsend forever. He is one of those people who is so talented, in so many different areas that it just makes you want to end it all. His performance of Kingdom on EMGtv is one of the best live performances ever. Or at least one of my favorite anyways.
the hook dude! amazing
I love watching these videos and then trying to sing them myself! Always fun to challenge and embarass myself! Keep on rockin' my dude 🤘
The chorus from "Sunshine" by AIC would be cool to hear. Or I suppose you could call it the outro of that that particular track. Maybe the chorus from "Confusion" as well or instead. Great vocals from Layne imo.
I’d like to see you do The Black Halo by Kamelot. His voice just..flows like a river. I’d love to hear your take on it.
Bury the light deep within: The part where it goes "I am the storm that is aproching, provoking black clouds and isolation"
Bro it would be sick if you did motionless in whites open verse challenge 👀👀
Ohhh that would be sick
Would love to hear you attempt the ending scream of Outsider by Veil of Maya, it begins at 3:45ish.
I’ve been waiting for this
Loved the Deep Purple!
Linkin Park - No Roads Left second chorus. I don't think it'll be super difficult, but I think it'd suit your voice a lot with a clean but lower key sound. (starts at 2:10 of the official audio, although perhaps also the pre-chorus too?)
Manowar - the end of Black Wind Fire and Steel. Good luck! 😌
SOLI DEO GLORIA Anthony. Keep killin’ it!
I've seen suggestion this on every video so far and it hasn't been done yet!
Satellites by Periphery!! Needs to be done!
Been asking for this for months now! Can't wait for the day this actually happens.
People hurt themselves trying to perform Devin Townsend lol
Proceed with caution
Dev's story: Got singing lessons and they said stop singing like this or you'll lose your voice in 6 months. 20 years later he's still here.
@@TenSecondSongs could you please try the song Given Up by Linkin Park. Please and thank you.
This is just a video of all my favourite music
4:46 Bruh... K.A.A.N. is legendary. I always try to turn people who have never heard of him onto his stuff.
Ours-"Broken" from the album "Precious". The vocal walk up on the bridge/build up. 3:05-3:35-ish. Would love to hear you tackle that. Gnecco hits some crazy notes in other songs too (including this one... Haha), but that's probably the wildest note at the top of that run.
Came to suggest Ours myself! Would recommend Red Colored Stars at around 2:30.
"Ours" people! I was gonna suggest "Fallen Souls." At 2:59, and then from 3:42 to the end of Fallen Souls is powerful. 🔥
Just do Corpus Christi Carol off of Grace by Jeff Buckley. But the Ours suggestions are pretty cool too.
I'd love to see you give Chester Bennington's parts in Linkin parks song "Qwerty" a go. Live in Tokyo is the best version, Highly recommend giving it a listen if you haven't heard it before.
Anthony! That Blues Traveler was wonderful.
Man Of The Year by Dance Gavin Dance at 2:30 is one of my favorite vocal sections of any song I've heard. I just love the intensity.
How is it possible to have never heard Child in Time, especially when you’re Anthony Vincent? 😮
lotta music out there, it's natural that some stuff goes unheard.
I'd love to see you try the chorus to "Gone Away" or "She's Got Issues" by The Offspring, I think Dexter Holland is such an underrated vocalist.
The way you sang Ace of Base made me want you to do the song a capella and even do all the instruments and backing vocals and see how it sounds.
Devin Townsend has been one of my biggest inspirations for a long, long time. Underrated king.
Aesthetic Perfection - Gods and gold or supernatural could be interesting. That artist has a pretty unique distortion sound that is probably hard to imitate (savely)
According to him though it doesn't strain his voice and he is doing it for years.
Do Kurt Cobains scream from scentless apprentice
I'd absolutely love a full cover of you singing Hook xD
Glad you had a go at Kaancepts, I've been commenting it for over a year, good stuff
Loved the skatting
Saw DTP at the RAH in 2015. Best live vocals I’ve ever heard
Okay, here are some of mine:
OTEP - Confrontation and Battle Ready
NItro. - OFR (chorus)
Vinnie Vincent Invasion - That Time of year (final smooth scream )
Geoff Castellucci - Blackbird
Within Temptation - It he Howling (soft bridge in a he middle)
Queensryche - I will Remember
Dude you're voice is soooooo powerful
I also love the fact that you control the use of your sinusus to almost nasal sing but not quite. You can hear it on the Smashing Pumpkins @ 8:53
keep up the good vids man.
for another video of this type : won't stand down (muse), Fra l'ombre e gl'orrori (Handel aria). tricky jumps !
The Ticks & Leeches scream, Maynard is dope.
When you started singing The Kill I started getting chills😅 Thanks for singing it!!
Seeing Child in Time instantly got me all giddy.
So talented man. Keep it up
Great stuff, man! Can you scream or have you ever screamed Filter's Hey Man Nice Shot? The chorus but mainly those last lines where he screams, "I WISH I WOULD'VE MET YOU"
Hey man hope your doing good seemed like you were a little off. Always good seeing your videos pop up keep doing you and all the best.
Persuader - Passion/Pain last chorus. Vocalist is incredible, and ending of this song is the masterpiece with such a high scream.
Dir en grey- dozing green ( ending scream)
Garentee you will struggle on this. Bonus points if you can do the live version
I was looking for someone to mention Kyo!
i'm so, so glad you got to know Child in Time, it really is the best Deep Purple song.
Best sung when drunk and in company of drunks.
5:05 made me lol for a good moment.
Awesome man you are good.
