You're so lucky to have such a supportive father Rhett. I brought my guitar to my parents house to play my songs for my mom when she was dying of cancer and my father said, "No one wants to hear that crap." to me. Never take his support for granted. 👨👦

The history of guitar teaching/infotainment on UA-cam would be a good subject for a documentary style video. As far as I know, Robert Renman (formerly Dolphinstreet, now Master Guitar Academy) was one of the first. His first lessons appeared in 2006. Justin Sandercoe, John Tuggle (Learning Guitar Now), StevieSnacks (my channel name before Texas Blues Alley), Marty Schwartz's old channel and Next Level Guitar started uploading in 2007. I
I went full-time on StevieSnacks in 2009, but it wasn't on UA-cam exclusively. Back then there wasn't enough traffic on UA-cam to make any serious money, so like most people from that era made my living authoring courses and using UA-cam to attract customers. I could be wrong, but I don't think very many guitar videos (in general) got enough traffic to make serious money until later.
When actual professionals who came FROM the music industry began using UA-cam (Tim Pierce, Rick, Rhett, Pete Thorn, etc...) the amount, quality, and subject matter of guitar videos changed a lot because you guys have the wealth of your experiences to draw on and share with the audience. And the production quality of everything has gotten so good, it really is a great time to be a guitar player, and fan.

To be honest... Rhett's videos are fine now, quite useful, actually--- but back in the day, maybe a couple years ago, they were art, some of the classiest stuff on UA-cam. Those reflect that interest in docs and filmmaking that he mentions. I really dug that stuff.

It reseamble so much to my dad (R.I.P.) - He was a singer, and I play guitar and bass.- and me, on his last years, when we have finally transsend the stage of father and son, to father and son but also, FRIENDS... I miss him SOO MUUUCH, we were on that point where you are SO open spoke and hearth, talkin´and shearing knowlege about music, car racing, girls, cinema, history, mytologies, EVERYTHING.
The satisfaction that produce when you REALLY connect with someone generations older than one, with the agrees and desagrees, but ALWAYS from the love, respect, and admiration... MEIN-GOT.

Around the 36 minute mark, you and Rick were talking about your motives being things you found fun, intriguing or interesting. I think that’s the essence of yours and his continuing success because the enjoyment you get from this stuff is so obviously visible, and it’s completely infectious. At whatever level we are, that passion is shared by all of us and connects us to you. You both have something to be really proud of and I’m sure I’m not overstepping by saying we are all extremely grateful for your pearls of wisdom and gems of knowledge. Thank you both.

i think a small improvement that I see many "youtube" stallwarts do that i like is they save any reminders to subscribe or adds about side financial generation efforts to near the END of the video ,,,after all if a newcommer to the channel sticks it out thru a video than they are most likely to subscribe ,,,,any sidetack to the subject of the video at the beginning (mentioning subscribing,patreon,,ect) ..is better not tossed in right off the bat...just my tiny opinion but its truely honest and i really appreciate those who do this
In theory, I completely agree with you. And I don't like being "sold" to all the time either. But, as a Live Streamer and video creator (nothing to do with music) on UA-cam, I can tell you from experience that what you said is simply not the case.

I've always thought it really conceited to ask you to "like" something that you haven't yet watched. How tf do I know if it's any good UNTIL I've watched it.

I picked up the guitar again, after a fifteen plus year hiatus, about six months later and the information I've received from you, Rick, Tim, Marty, Pete etc. has been invaluable (yet free, except Rick's book. Best tip I got from Tim when he was teaching Lesly Wests story on the Mississippi Queen tone. He nonchalantly mentioned his 4x12 cabinet was in a vault in the garage mic to his monitor . What a get tip to control the level of blistering sound .
I met a band Crack The Sky on tour in the 70s, they had their cabs in a mic'ed box off stage.

Rhett and Rick, thank you so much for sharing your experiences and journeys into the world of UA-cam. Hearing about how you both started into this whole video making business and what you had to do and learn to get where you are now is incredibly and insightful to newcomers wanting to jump into this game. I'm still a fledgling channel with just over 18 months of regular video uploads, and though I am tiny compared with both of your channels, I can absolutely relate and concur with what you need to be able to do to even have a chance of getting a channel off the ground today.
Like both of you, I come from a background of being a musician over many years, and like Rhett, I had zero experience of being a lecturer or teacher. I just wanted to write and record music and have an outlet for it. Along the way I realised how much the music business has changed, and that original recorded music alone (in most cases) is no longer enough, so to get anywhere these days you need to have an active presence on UA-cam. My journey has taken me to learn about camera/ photography, videography, lighting, video editing, presenting to a camera, sound engineering, graphic design, scripting, thumbnail creating, optimising videos for multiple social media platforms etc. etc. I've still got much to learn, and though I have learnt a lot so far, with this self produced video industry platform there will constantly be new things to learn and changes to adapt to.
A few years ago I never though that I'd be hosting my own UA-cam channel, but thanks to all the information and guides on UA-cam, and inspiration from the likes of channels such as yours, it gave me the push to give it a shot. Thank you both for your wonderfully informative and insightful videos!

Speaking to that shootout video you did with the UA pedals versus their real amp counterparts, it may not have been the way they wanted you to do that video. But it's the video that finally got me to subscribe to your channel. I absolutely loved it. And it put the Ruby '63 at the top of my wishlist, ahead of the actual Vox AC15 I've been shopping for.

Rick, you probably don't remember this but I came up to you at Namm this year at the Abasi booth and told you briefly how much I appreciate your videos and that you helped inspire me to start my own channel.
It was exactly how Rhett said, I had spent thousands upon thousands of hours learning to 3D model, particularly Guitars. There was large gap on youtube for quality guitar design content, so I threw up a video "just for the hell of it" to see what would happen. Well that first video got a couple thousand views in the first month and I knew there was something there. So I've made about 40 videos since then, getting flooded with requests and talking to prominent luthiers all over the world. It's not just guitar playing that has benefited from the knowledge transfer content. The Luthier world is exploding due to CAD and CNC technology becoming widely available.
Once again, thank you both for the work you do. I really appreciate how much work goes your channel.
Its great to hear your backstory along with Rick's. BTW, if there were more people like Rick in the world with his dedication to doing the right thing like an obligation to teach interns etc, the world would be a much better place. As far as you go Rhett, we are all pulling for you to reach greatness. Just keep on learning and working hard. Sorry this is sounding like a pep talk but this video told a very personal story of your journey so far and it was really interesting.

Listing all those skills a musician now has to have; video editing, camera tech, color grading, channel optimizing, etc., … all that stuff IS the reason there will never be another Beatles or Stones, or Van Halens or Smashing Pumpkins…
They all came from an era where a musician could and DID spend ALL their time working on their instrument or their craft.
I remember sitting at lunch at Jim’s Grill with Billy Corgan and listening to him talk about growing up living in a apartment with his dad, and he said he had “no life”, he just spent all his time in his bedroom with his guitar, playing and learning ALL the time.
Or being at James Iha’s apartment and noticing that his idea of spending his free time was to sit down and learn EVERY guitar part on whatever new record had just come out that he liked and was listening to.
THIS is what it takes to get to those levels we all love so much and make all these videos about!
The distraction of all those other things musicians now need to learn just means they are never going to get to the higher levels of musicianship that we all love and consider “the standard”.
We talk about them, we make and watch these videos about them, but I don’t think we are realizing that the environment that allowed those people to come to exist.. that environment is gone now, and the chances that we get new musicians creating RECORDS that bring all the meaning to people, and that we listen to and talk about years later are approaching zero.

Interesting stuff Rhett (and Rick). it's a new world for musicians. more skill sets to master than just music. for us who enjoy learning it gives us a smorgasbord of teachers to choose from. with each bringing something to the mix.
The whole music industry has changed. I spent 25 years in recorded media retail. Now everything is digital. It think the evolution of all aspects in the industry had opened doors for musicians and other industry professionals.

BTW, "knowledge transfer"? This has been around for a *very long time*! I've been engaged in doing this for over 30 years and others had been doing that long before I started.
We described it as a means of being able to meet someone's training and development need:
1. Without having to be on the hook for the rigor and cost of providing a formal classroom experience for the learner
2. Having the flexibility to meet the learner's need where at whatever level of competency they'd already gained. In other words, it wasn't a singular pathway to follow. It was all about customizing the experience to meet the specific needs and competencies the person needed to gain, getting maximum use from the time and ability to directly engage the learner.
Great discussion and very practical about the hard yards (like being successful in any job) that you have to put in to make it work. I totally agree with Rhett points about being a fantastic resource for aspiring musicians and definitely wish it had existed when I started playing (a long time before the internet was mainstream!). Love the conversational format but with a topic and a point.
Very informative on where and what you can do with music and where the industry is going and headed thanks! I'm supposed to start college at full sail university for music science and audio engineering and this is good insight!

This is your BOOMER follower. Love both you and Rick. I have been writing and recording Since 1992. I just got your rhythms basics course, went thru it and need to do that again. I have All of Rick's courses but I mostly need the ear training. I have only been in one band, garage band with my brother and neighbor way back in late 60s early 70s. Had a horrible guitar teacher(myself) and no mentors. So thanks for all you do.

This video is incredibly interesting to me because as a student of art school in the very early 2000s I’ve always seen and understood that artists and musicians who do other things as well as there main thing were the people who actually can do things, not one trick ponies unless you are so incredibly phenomenal at one thing.

While getting a Masrer's in Christian Esucation we talked about teaching/education in two ways; mug-jug and experiential learning. In mug-jug the O'Dell is best described as pouring content into a learners head, in experiential learning the goal is to have the student get a hand/heart/head encounter with the content. Rhett, that's what I like about the vids that you and Rick do...you get an encounter with the content, by hearing and where applicable seeing what you are presenting. Knowledge transfer is good but put experiential in front of that, cause that is how both of you teach
This is where Rhett really shines for me. When he’s teaching about technology or what it takes to make UA-cam work his passion is off the charts. And I respect that Rick gave him the space to express his thoughts.
I love both of your channels. I find myself DOA with standard cable TV or to some extent streaming services like Netflix. Granted I'm music nut but still it's pure, it's fresh and interesting.
Pretty soon it'll be like serving on the Enterprise in Star Trek. To get on that ship, whether you're a cook or a captain, you have to be fluent in physics, advanced mathematics, know three languages, be a martial arts expert, etc. It's becoming that way for every profession. In the 90s if you were a software developer coming out of college and you knew what an 'Object' was you were hired on the spot...with a sign on bonus. Now you have to know three dev platforms, three or more dev languages, three cloud platforms, etc., just to get in the door. Oh...and an EXPERT at everything mentioned.
I will take mind enrichment(knowledge) over mindless entertainment. Learning skills, and sourcing information is a blessing thanks to channels like yours and Ricks. Just remember take breaks to avoid burnout. Peace.

That means he’s paying attention. When those of us with ADHD sit still and look steadily at the speaker, there’s a good chance that our focus is more on being still than on listening or even speaking. Pretty soon we’ll just be zoned out.
That was cool listening to you guys. But even cooler was watching the reflection of the monitor on Rick's guitar. Someone should make a guitar like that with built-in effects that light up.
If I look back when I picked up the guitar at the age of 16, man, we had 2 guitar shops in town, the only way to learn other than a teacher was a book which was very complicated and required some basic music knowledge. I put the guitar down because I thought it wasn't for me and then someone checked it out and said "Man that guitar is not set up right, how could you even play on it?". So yeah, you guys gave us the knowledge, the unlimited knowledge of music and it is so easy to start this journey now because of you, thank you!
It's definitely a different world now, and if you have the means to get some basic gear, the learning curve can be as steep as you want. Doesn't mean you'll get good fast, but the opportunity is there. I looked at it like, I'm gonna lay the groundwork and stay the course. Once you commit to it financially, then you have no one to blame for failing but yourself.
I started in ‘86. I got the Doug Marks Metal Method cassette tapes. 😀
@@andrewbecker3700 yes, and to be honest for me it seems that gear got relatively cheaper. It is still hard to learn I think but at least you have options, I didn’t even know that my gear was crap and that is why it is hard to play.
@@ADAMBLAZEVIC Oh, there's no question the availability of let's say "adequate " gear, is much better. But that also makes it much more complicated to sift out the real good stuff in a world of overrated mediocracy. At least back in the day we knew what to expect. To much information can easily overload decision making and lead to impulse buys. I've learned to take a step back and tryn more accurately asses my wants over needs ratio. Do I really need a Chapman ML3 pro in Burnt Orange Sparkle? No, but she sure be purdy.

You guys should talk about what an amazing thing Corey Wong has done with his UA-cam channel. It's like a 90s musicians tv show dream come true thanks to the UA-cam era. Back in the day tv companies could shoot such things down because it's not financially viable according to them
I wish I could watch UA-cam without 20 ads all through it, and without having to pay for no ads. I'd rather pay you guys individually for website access to these videos as well as the courses, which I've happily purchased. Thanks for sharing and teaching us so much!

Very fortunate to have the networking of creators here. Rick has learn to use that. Before all this, if you were not famous, you don't matter. My knowlege is universal and I like to see others learn, and enjoy learning from players who I would have never heard of. records, concerts, may be a thing of the past.
The mic shootout would have been incredible if it was done and with acoustic instruments. Showing experiments with placement around the instruments. I remember running PA and listening to my aunt's flute to find the right spot (40+ years ago).
Knowledge Transfer (KT) is a term we use in IT a lot - it basically means teaching, like you said :) it's a fancy way to say "get a Subject-Matter-Expert (SME - we love our acronyms in IT) to teach one or more people how a certain piece of code/software/whatever works." I haven't heard it in terms of an economy before, but it makes sense. Thanks for a great video once again. You guys rock.
Ricks blue double cut Les Paul totally changed my opinion on double cutaway Les Pauls. A double cut with dual P90’s, now you’re talking. It deserves its own model name separate from the Les Paul. I didn’t realize that finding one with all four controls would be hard. Having two tone knobs is important for me. I can get by with a master volume, but I need those separate tone pots.
I think for me, the best thing a you tube person needs is good content first and foremost. You can get by with a more affordable camera (even your phone camera) and not the best lighting or setting if your content is really good and fills a need or talks about a very interesting subject not already on youtube. You can always spend money and learn more and make your videos look better, but the content has to be there first. It's about what you say and how you say it, not how good you look while saying it. And any career and recognition should be from your talent and what you share. My favorite you-tubers are already talented at what they do and just use this platform to share it with the world. (For example I love to watch a very talented guitar luthier who builds INCREDIBLE instruments. His master woodworking and his narration make them so relaxing to watch.) They aren't out to be youtube or instagram famous, but they have credibility that brings views because they have something to share that people want to learn or see, and they inspire. They know thier niche and cater to it with just great content, like you two do.
I hear the term "knowledge transfer" all the time as a software engineer. We know a system from years of working with it and you setup sessions to share the knowledge you have learned with new resources or perhaps new companies taking over a contract. Rick and Rhett are achieving knowledge transfer through youtube. That is why I subscribe! Subscribe people :)

Yes, but I don't really jell with the idea that KT is teaching because I did technical teaching in IT at one time. I am used to it from IT in government and KT happened say at the end of a project and the installation teams would work with the people who were now going to support what was delivered and need to know how to troubleshoot and problem solve the new system/equipment. Or working with a company or contractors and they are exiting and before they go they are going to dump a lot of working knowledge onto the permanent staff.
I love you guys, just don't turn into a brand pusher. Its a bummer when you have a great channel that gets turned into clickbait bullshit that gets you clicks . Music is Win is the biggest example of choosing money over good content. Be true to yourself and you'll have followers who are truly behind you.

The biggest con I can see for someone starting up a UA-cam based music-content career is that you are gambling upon a vehicle controlled by a nebulous corporate entity that controls what you can and cannot put out there. In fact, if you transgress the wrong "invisible" line, they could shut you down in a heartbeat. It's not a democracy and you can't control it - that's a rather shaky business model - especially, as you have no idea what the future, changing rules might be.

You are not the only one having issues with the scammers. Wish UA-cam could get on top of it. I enjoyed the video. I don't think you inspired me to start a channel but it was cool watching you guys talk about it and how you got started.
As a young physist and a future PhD I must say that the skill set expands almost for every job. You can't just know your particular thing (as music or physics). You have to be able to do at least supplementary computer jobs for your needs as video editing or coding. Even the entry level knowledge in the complimentary jobs is better than nothing and can help you greatly.
Nice conversation Rhett and Rick! One of the unrecognized and overlooked aspects of the evolution of your content is the conversationalist, unscripted style. It's very earnest, genuine, and intriguing for the viewer 👍 Perhaps this is influenced by the podcast format.
Watching UA-cam videos from years ago during UA-cam's inception is downright cringe worthy and hilarious. Scripted, uptight, preachy, low production quality. The format has come a long way and both of you guys have amazing content!
I am currently in the process of doing this very thing. I've been playing music (guitar, drums, bass) for 30 years. I also work a full time job but I'm putting out a UA-cam video every week with an original song every week. And a couple Instagram videos a week about my thought process for the song and UA-cam video that week. How important is TikTok?? This is one media I'm not familiar with and don't really have the desire to be. But I'm willing if it's needed to grow my other channels. And I couldn't agree more, All of this is alot of work but very rewarding and freeing to unlock more ways to make your creativity tangible. And productive. I signed up for this short course, and I really like the idea of a short course to teach one idea, mostly because I have a REALLY short attention span. And this one in particular is perfect for me because I really am stuck in exactly this place. Thinking about this, maybe you could do some short courses on some of the licks you play. Whenever you are testing a peddle, or a guitar or trying to dial in a tone, you play a pretty small number of licks, and I always wish I could learn them. You could introduce a lick, maybe where you learned it, and how it can be used in the context of playing. Just a selfish idea :- ) Thanks!
