I have to side with the train aficionados on this one. Steel on steel hardly gives any grip, so that's why those mountain trains have the gearing rail in-between the normal rails. I love how realistic Teaville looks, so I think the small details just add so much. Love the trainabouts btw!
Biffa! That tram line you haven’t fixed yet is giving me anxiety😂 the one going through the park. Put some paths to the stops so people can actually walk to them otherwise there’s no point in that line😁

I plan to implement the passenger/freight line separation early on in my next city! I think it will be a good decision as your city grows!
Hey biffa, have you ever thought of making a skyscraper district, like install your favourite skyscrapers in real life off of the workshop and combine them to form TeaTown Skyline. E.g. u could have London’s the shard, New York’s Empire State Building, Singapore’s Marina Bay Sands etc. Great video as always!
I know this since years. Extra rails for Cargo or Passenger can help often. Japan do it since near 100 years. Germany, UK, U.S.A., and Kingdom of Nederlands like choka block and not split. 😂
The last city I built before taking a hiatus from the game had a massively complex rail system. Outside trains stayed on their own dedicated track, completely isolated from the city. Internal trains ran on their own loops, one cargo and one passenger. Trucks carried freight between the external and internal hubs, passengers walked across the street between external and internal stations. I don't remember the benefits of doing that. There was something I read, something about the mechanics of the game. It worked great and gave me lots more network to tinker with.
I wish that mountain line was a commuter train as imagine seeing that view while heading to and from work or traveling between sections of the city. Sigh. :) Good episode, fun stuff!
This video was great. Good to see you step through all the lines and how you put it together and how it paid off in the end. It helps show the benefit of separate lines. Good stuff Biffa!
Love it Biffa. Has giving me a new idea for the city I will be starting today. Going to build all the infrastructure of extra road and rails before zoning. Will now def be keeping passenger and cargo rails fully separate
That's why I use monorail instead of passenger trains. Monorails have the same stats as trains but are easier to fit in dense cities cause you can have stations and rails over the streets.
This was great, Biffa! More primers/tips/guides to using cargo trains would be great. I feel like I only know some of the basics for how to build an efficient network. Loving this series!
Love the mountain pass train line. Inspired. I am good at the functional aspects of this game, but this outside the box function + wow factor.. well, that I can not do. Nicely done Biffa. That's a Thumb up from me.
Biffa, have you thought of creating an intermodal cargo network? One that's not at all connected to your external connections but instead takes cargo from your raw material industry areas to your specialized factories and commercial areas? That can reduce truck traffic that goes between areas of your city (not jus traffic out and in)
I'm not even much of a traffic buff or anything but man these train tracks are so fantasy. They can barely handle a gradient of like 5% but these are next level. I always applaud custom maps or lp's that recreate the realistic almost level train network.
I really enjoyed watching all the design decisions you made in your re-design of the rail system. Could a future video focus on the passenger train system, now that it is separated from the cargo? Also, I was surprised you didn't do a comparison of the CSL overview maps, considering it was the thumbnail. Really love your videos and your cadence and strategic tea breaks!
Ahhh, first time watching. It's great. But the intersections! And all the paths! I hope I never have to drive in something like that... Ever... I hope...
That third double layered train roundabout is still essentially just four tracks, just split into one way tracks so passing trains don’t get in each other’s way while on the roundabouts, I have a couple in my city and they work very well.
At 9:44 you showed a nice double bridge (which looks absolutely fantastic :) ). But I think you need to turn some of the pillars a bit so they matches the flow direction of the river.
As right-of-ways can be very difficult and very expensive to obtain what I would suggest is on a section of track that you don't need just disconnect one section and leave the rest until the point where you might need something else there. Also, where you have shared track for a short distance and then a cargo station beyond that I would suggest using the same right-of-way and then separating the tracks vertically if you can't do it horizontally. I found this very interesting! Thanks.
That train station shot ...! The range of detail in this game is amazing! Even though the framerate takes a dive, to think this is still part of a game that lets you zoom out to regional scale is seriously impressive!
I know it's just a game. And we watch it for entertainment. But i would actually enjoy that it would be a tiny bit more realistic. Up and over everything 😂. Crossing a river on its widest part... meh okay. But still enjoy the series! Enjoy it more then the cityfixing. Cheers!
I don't recall ever seeing a complicated rail junction like that turbo rail interchange in real life. Cargo train routes in particular are mostly point-to-point between stations and classification yards (marshalling yards in the UK) where train cars are sorted by destination and coupled into new trains. Even the T-interchange is too elaborate; in real life that junction would be an at grade Y intersection. Passenger trains similarly avoid such complicated rail junctions by putting a large station at the junction location and requiring passengers to transfer from their arrival train to their destination train. The trains themselves can therefore travel mostly point-to-point between stations with no need for elaborate interchanges.
Biffa!! Thanks to you I started playing this game +/- 3 weeks ago and am in love with it. As you always ask for challenges, here you have one: build a city up to X population, but you can't bulldoze anything nor move things that are already placed (as in real life). -> Can't bulldoze roads -> Can't bulldoze abandoned/burned down buildings -> Can't move services once placed -> Can bulldoze: parks, parking lots, 1st Lvl buildings; but can't relocate any of them (you have to buy/build them from zero) Any suggestions to make it more challenging are welcome in the comments, the idea is to make it a litle bit more realistic.
Hey Biffa, absolutely smashed this game thanks to a lot of your advise and tips. playing vanilla on xbox no mods a couple dlc's usual stuff, and apart from a few tweeks, my citys running great. population 183k and happiness about 97% - 9 tiles, maximum im aloud in this version of the game :) thanks for your help, great vids, also love how u tell everyone off sometimes hahaha
Something else you can do to assist is at the split between cargo and passenger, use TMPE to set which line goes which way. Just as you can tell certain traffic cannot go on a road, you can do the same with trains telling it one track is passenger only and another is cargo only. You don't have to do it for the entire line, only where the junction/split is.
Hmm, changing the train network I see... sensible idea to separate the passenger and cargo networks, allows for basically double capacity on both as one operation isn't interrupting the other. I wonder, are you going to make the CSL Map of Teaville public soon? Because it would be lovely, I do have some ideas I wanna tinker around with drawing on TeaVille :)
I just felt like having a separate rail for cargo made sense. I also like to have passagers change trains at a devoted intercity station when they come into the city. This stops outside trains blocking up the system.
What I enjoy watching these series is Biffa's attention to the details. I'm still a "grid" type of player, mainly because I cannot see how to better use the scenery to make things look pretty. But man, this Teaville is making me rethink how I should play the game. Thank you for that!
Hi Biffa! If you use the TM:PE vehicles restrictions tool you can ban all passanger trains from your cargo network and all your cargo trains from the passenger line. Great video. :)
It's neat and looks pretty cool, but like you said a lot of train aficionados out there might hate it. I know nothing about trains but these things jump out to me: - The inclines (you mentioned this) - The sharp angles on some turns - Double bridges -- you have some tracks splitting right before bridging... in reality, why spend for 2 bridges when you could have 1 and then split after - Train roundabouts -- really curious if these exist. Seems like it's overkill given the traffic and it suffers from both the incline and sharp turn angles listed before Interested to hear what some train experts actually think. Anyway, hope this comment doesn't sound negative. Love the vids, keep up the awesome content!
Biffa, Hamilton District has 2 unconnected metro stations on the North side. You placed 4 stations on either side of the highway, but you forgot to connect a couple of them! I keep seeing the stations and hoping you will remember to connect :)
All aboard the tea train! It does feel a little unfair that the cargo lines have the scenic coaster and mountain routes but it is logical based on your setup. What you could do now is run a passenger line left out of the central station and take it north.
I think I'd have split them a little differently. Having all the incoming lines go to one intersection, then that one branch of that intersection feeding every one of the terminals means there's a choke point where all external cargo traffic will be going over one pair of rails. If you instead had two 4-way intersections, you could have 1 of the externals into one of them, and 2 into another, then have one crossover between them, and a still have separate runs from there to the various cargo terminals.
The mountainside line is rather swish, but it seems a tad wasted on a cargo line. I'm imagining passengers would line up to take the train that has such a lovely view.
Perhaps you should add another cargo train terminal on the newer side of the city that you are building in, it can also help reduce industry traffic in the city.
I really enjoy biffa’s videos, I have been watching his videos for almost a year now and I don’t even play City skylines mainly because my laptop is old af and I can’t afford a new one.
Remember when i decided it was time to separate my 2 train networks and how much work it took, so i appreciate how much effort you put into this video. Wish i had this help back for my first attempt though, those cargo train abouts look amazing!
I have had several trains pause randomly, inspected the rails and found no issue, however, it was a glitch... I have to solutions I can use, both simple and effective. 1, pause, delete the rails in front of the train and redraw about three sections (nodes) and resume, 70% of the time the trains start rolling a few seconds later. (Something made the rails look wrong to the AI) 2, If there is room on both sides of the existing rails, place one way tracks going either direction on the appropriate sides of the main line, starting a few nodes behind the stopped train and extending a few nodes further (I tend to do two train lengths) creating side rails(much like in real life bypass tracks)...within a few second the trains start moving and now you have a bypass to watch.
Hi All, Every since your train spaghetti video i have always used separate tracks for freight and another for passengers, they never use the same rail line at all. On ciites with 1 rail entry point not much you can do other than leave space for the 2 merging points, but if i have 2 or more entry points to the map i dedicate 1 to passenger and the other to freight. Also the very first passenger station is Intercity ( ?? is that the right word ) all other have that option turned off. The first station connects to another one for local loop or goes straight to multi station building. Freight has its own lines and no passenger trains use the line, it cut out 99% of train congestion and train stopped on the tracks backed up. Regards George
You didnt only separated your cargo trains from your passanger trains, you also separated yourself from other City Skylines players and youtubers... This was just incredible! The cleanliness, the thought.. brilliant!. You did outdid the separation you did on SipaTea CiTea!. Im so glad you put videos out for everyone to see.
Biffa, this is a wild setup! 😆 Rails are all over the place! 😆 I guess you'll be very careful on knowing how to "train" the cargo when you are bringing it into your city... 😆
Another thing you can do is use tmpe vehicle restrictions to make sure no intercity trains are using your new cargo line to cut through (or vice versa) and make it cargo only (and passenger only for the other line)
Would have been nice if you did one last overview after you put in all the new tracks, make it easier to see how you made the tracks weave through your city.
In the Netherlands you have a series called Rail Away, it's amazing as it shows all most amazing rail trips around the world. When I read the title I thought about that.
At 15:10... instead of expensive tunneling, can't there be a bridge? It seems like the road's between a mountain and a hill. Otherwise good idea. Just have several nitpicks; this way the trainlines (especially the interchanges) use up quite a lot of room. And of course, two separate tracks mean twice the cost. I think the city's balance is in the red? Wonder what you'll do to change that around. Oh yeah, have a sip of tea!
You should create a new asset to replace the motorway junction in the middle, near where the new train junction is. It can be a combination road/train/tram/monorail roundabout. And it shall be called "The Holy Biffabout".
Just for the record, the primary reason trains don't deal well with inclines isn't because of horsepower, but because of traction. Having two engines instead of one doesn't do much to help with steel wheels slipping on a steel rail. But I'm personally willing to suspend disbelief for the sake of a gorgeous city!
I wonder what the effect would be in real life on the land value of the houses near that mountain pass rail.
Pretty luxurious location and suddenly, Cargo lines in your backyard.
Would be cool if the citizens protested NIMBY!
Running train lines down the most expensive bits of land, up and down coasts...
Also he has the train going under the highway at several points. The train line should be as smooth and flat as possible, especially for a heavy cargo train, you'd want the highways going under the train line
Not to mention the incredibly sharp corners which would need severe speed restrictions or else cause some spectacular derailments

There are times when Cities needs a Roller Coaster Tycoon style road/track delete function that follows the nodes backwards so you don't miss anything
Felt nostalgic watching this
Well, that answered my question from your last video. Thanks Biffa! Looks like i have some work to do.
thanks biffa for this nice mod :) i finally got an overview over my map and was able to fix my train traffic jams :D hard work, but i did it
Hi All, Every since your train spaghetti video i have always used separate tracks for freight and another for passengers, they never use the same rail line at all.
Regards
George
Excellent job, Biffa. That had to be difficult.
Just FYI there's a mod that lets you build infrastructure outside your borders so you can build highways / rails without buying the big tiles.
I've got millions stashed away 👍
Another thing you can do is use tmpe vehicle restrictions to make sure no intercity trains are using your new cargo line to cut through (or vice versa) and make it cargo only (and passenger only for the other line)
Just funny to see these cargo trains in TeaVille after i watched "Unstoppable" on TV... 😁
Money doesn't matter... Placing the train bridges over the widest part of the rivers :D
Biffa, your videos are perfect for those of us still in lockdown. Thank you so so much
Would have been nice if you did one last overview after you put in all the new tracks, make it easier to see how you made the tracks weave through your city.
