  • GUNDAM is a great monolith of an anime franchise. It's large, it's daunting, and very quickly we are going to cover what it is at its core...and where you might want to start.

I underestimated just how well the sci-fi worldbuilding of 70s Gundam would holdup. It still feels so unique and fresh to this day

Since people keep asking to provide a list on how to watch Gundams, I'll just re-post my guide list here:
Below are Gundam series from Alternate Universes (AU) that you can jump right into without watching any past series. It's newbie-friendly:
    *Gundam 00* (2 seasons + 1 movie)
    *Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans* (2 seasons)
*Gundam SEED + Destiny + Stargazer* (make sure to watch the Remaster version = the one in widescreen)
*Gundam Age + Memory of Eden* (simpler story, kiddy design)
*Gundam X* (set in post-apocalyptic world, a bit gloomy)
    *Gundam Wing + Endless Waltz*
*G Gundam* (Gundams with flashy martial arts. Ridiculous but fun)
Below are Gundam series from Universal Century (UC) which you have to watch chronologically in order to understand the story of the next installment.
    1. *Mobile Suit Gundam* (just watch the Trilogy Movies)
    2. *Zeta Gundam* (watch the series, but also has Trilogy Movies if you don’t have time)
    3. *Gundam ZZ* (series)
    4. *Char’s Counterrattack* (movie)
    5. *Gundam Unicorn*
    6. *Gundam: Twilight Axis*
Below are UC sidestories that can be watched independently if you already watched the very first Mobile Suit Gundam (MSG):
    - *Gundam: The Origin* (even though I said it’s a side-story, this is kind important since it’s a prequel set before the first MSG)
    - *Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket*
    - *Gundam: 08th MS Team*
    - *Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory*
    - *Gundam Thunderbolt*
    - *MS IGLOO* (2 seasons of CG series)
Below are UC series that’s set faaar in the future that it’s not really needed to watch previous UC series except for the first MSG:
    *Gundam F91* (movie)
    *Victory Gundam* (series)
    *Turn-A Gundam* (series)
*Gundam: Reconguista in G* (series + 1 CG OVA)
Below are lighthearted and fun Gundam toy series that you should watched after you’ve seen quite a number of series:
    *Gunpla Builders Beginning G*
    *Gundam Build Fighters*
    *Gundam Build Fighters Try*
    For kids
*SD Gundam Sangokuden Brave Battle Warriors*

You need too flip war in the pocket and 8th ms team , war in the pocket is at the very end of the war and they use the united maintenance plan for their mobile suits. 8th ms team is about a 4th into the war. and im pretty sure that twilight axis came before unicorn in the story line as well. i like your list though thank you for making it !

Y'all forgot about Gundam Sentinel. It's a novel, but the story is the most mature one of all Gundam, and it's fucking good. It's basically a high-quality military fiction in Universal Century.

I still think the original Gundam is one of the best pieces of pop culture media Japan has ever produced, and is a major, if not the major reason, Japanese pop culture is a major player in the world today. It was one of the first original anime to gain a large adult following. Countless creators were inspired to become creators by it. Countless people became engineers due to Gundam.
Even to this day the story holds up wonderfully. There are so many themes touched upon and explored in sensible and realistic manner. Its characters to this day are iconic and Char is an absolute legend of a character. Even in a head-to-head comparision between Star Wars and Gundam Star Wars comes off as hopelessly simplistic and juvenile.
Gundam shows scenes like competency not immediately translating into leadership ability with Mirai struggling to take over for Bright. Gundam shows what it feels like to become estranged from your parents due to growing up in completely different circumstances. It has interesting and unexpected character development like Amuro estranging himself from Fraw Bow due to his rising esteem and responsibilites. It has a tragic and interesting Romance in Lalah and Char. Kai and Miharu's story were excellently directed.
Yeah, everybody knows that the original Gundam was not the first serious anime or the first one with mature themes, but it executed so many different ones so wonderfully, with good art, good direction, iconic voice acting, iconic art.
To this day I still think Gundam is hopelessly underrated in the West and it's insane to see that for a long time even some of the mediocre OVAs like Stardust Memory were more popular here

    • @danballe

Dude Stardust Memory was great, sure many does not approve of the shouting bouts between Kou & Gato and mention that Gato is a poor made version of Char but, it is still pretty good. Not as good as War in the Pocket though.

So I know this video is from 2017, but I just wanted to say thank you.
Ever since I started watching anime, I had an innate hate for mecha anime. Not sure why but I detested the sight of mecha, if someone recommended an anime with mecha, I'd instantly reject it. This was knocked slightly by Code Geass, but I put it down to being a one off.
This video made me try the original Gundam, albeit after watching it twice. After about 2 hours agonising over whether I should watch the movies or the t.v. series, I decided I only had one 'first time watching' experience and watched the entire t.v. series and absolutely loved it. It wasn't perfect, the animation could be terrible but it did so much for me, it reminded me why I love anime. it also reminded me how amazing anime nowadays looks.
I'm now watching Gundam Zeta and plan to watch all of the U.S.
Gundam is fun, it is painful, it makes you hate how terrible people can be and it makes you see how amazing people can be. Mecha wasn't the problem, I was.
    Thank you.

I agree whenever i recommend a mecha anime it's like *nah it's nat 4 mi* but then they watch big 0 CG GL or Gundam and their instantly hooked.
I say always give it at least 3 or 5 episodes before dropping it as a whole even IF things only get interesting on the 10 or 15 ep.
I declined One piece but got into gundam sometimes that's how life goes you like what many few like over what (large) many like and am not bothered by it.

"It's relatively slow, which denies the story the sense of urgency that war dramas benefit from." Personally, I love that Gundam portrays a different side of war- the slow drudgery of a war that just seems to go on and on. It's why I adore it so much, and it's why I'm glad I watched the whole original series. However, I know it's not for everyone, so I don't disagree that the recap films might be better for some people. But I wouldn't say that the original shows pacing takes away from the "war"ness of it universally- I think it gives a unique and vital perspective.

      It is really good.
Its basically a 7 1-hour episodes with awesome animation- it was made to be viewed in cinemas after all(2nd best animated gundam imo after F91).
Has a lot of throwbacks/refrences to older series and the thing that pobably a lot of people dont know is that the composer for it is Hiroyuki Sawano and in my opinion its easily his best work.
Also His Unchild album with Unicor's osts sung by Aimer is greatness.
Although DO NOT wacht it if you havent wachted ealier UC stuff since Unicorn would feel hmmm shallow since it assumes you know about most of the stuff.

It's nice to see the younger generation take an interest in my personal favorite franchise, even several years past its inception.
I hope each of you can find something to enjoy about this franchise because I believe that, no matter where you are now, or where you are going, Gundam has something of importance to say to each of you. What that message will be will depend on you, but it is my hope that you will all have something to say about its subject matter and perhaps the philosophical ideas at play, but most importantly, I want you to try and see things from a different perspective, just as I did as I watched these shows and thought about them from childhood to adulthood. You don't have to outright change the perspective you have, or even agree with it at all, but I ask that you at least try and see things differently because that understanding is the first step to a more prosperous future that we should all strive for.

Yeah you might want to skip Mobile Fighter G Gundam and Turn A Gundam on your first pass. While not bad shows, they are so tonally and story different from any of the others that it will be jarring to step out to watch them and then come back. Other than using the Gundam name for marketing a Giant Robot show they don't really have any connective tissue to the main shows, even the alternate universe ones. Definately go back and watch them, especially Turn A which is fantastic. But don't jump into them while in the middle of the Universal Century stuff or WIng. It will be like going from Cowboy Bebop to Dragonball. And just skip any and all of teh cutesy SuperDeformed kids shows.

If you don't think the ending of 0079 isn't one of the best endings of any anime ever, I just don't know what to tell you. For the record, I firmly sit on the TV show side of the fence, thinking that what some call "bad pacing" is actually "time to breathe". That, and not enough shows recognize the significance of grandparent rebellions in warfare.

As a fan of not only Gundam but the sci-fi genre in general, this video put a huge silly yet happy smile on my face.
Also, Char Aznable was on the thumbnail. I am simple. I see this man and suddenly want to comment and like the video.
And if I may make a suggestion, an underrated series in the UC timeline, Gundam 0080 War in the Pocket is just a great war story for any newcomer to enjoy!

I know, it's a proper masterpiece, not only with regard to Gundam, but also to animation in general. I wonder why I'm the only one who mentioned in the comments, it's as if no-one is aware of its existence.

      @gravityhammer25 7 років тому +1

Yeah its crazy! The only way I figured out about 0083 is that I was playing Gundam vs. Gundam on PSP like 8 years ago. I noticed an interesting Gundam (GP-02)... and thought oh I wonder what this Bazooka does. I press the button to fire and watch a giant explosion decimate everything... i'm like damn it has a nuke. I knew I had to see what this series was about. Truly a hidden gem... i''m surprised OP did not mention it.
They have 0083 on Blu-Ray now... and it looks absolutely gorgeous!

Personally the Gundam franchise is my absolute favorite anime franchise it's one of the first anime franchises I really got into and let's face it if you like giant robots along with some interesting storytelling then you will love the Gundam franchise in any interation the universal century or different series like wing G Gundam iron blooded orphans and 00 (known as Double O for those who don't know) seriously the fights are cool as hell weather on Earth or in space and the best part about the seasons I just mentioned is that they are their own separate universe but if you are like me and you want a pilot these things then there are games like Gundam versus and Dynasty Warriors Gundam which I recommend specifically Dynasty Warriors Gundam 3 (available for xbox 360) which has all the way up to 00 and every Gundam in Mobile Suit prior to that series Gundam versus has all the mobile suits in the franchise because it's the most recent game although unlike Dynasty Warriors Gundam 3 it's only available on the PlayStation 4
And if you're wondering my recommendations for Gundam series to watch my personal favorites are Gundam Wing and Gundam 00 I also recommend checking out Gundam build Fighters series because it's really interesting and not like any other Gundam series it's people who built their own gundam model kits and those machines belt from the model kits get to fight while being controlled by the people who create them it's super interesting super cool and there's different creative versions of previous legendary Gundams featured

  • @okitasan
    @okitasan 6 років тому +5

I've never really been interested in Gundam though as an anime fan I have a general idea of the UC story just from osmosis. I recently watched Gundam Unicorn and was hooked by the first episode just based on the execution of the show alone. I sometimes had difficulty understanding story references but the direction, pacing and overall production value of the animation and design was intriguing enough. Then, as the story progressed I got a sense of the history and lore that was being referenced and started to delve in to the wikis to read about the previous UC stories.
Despite some annoying character moments, overall the writing was good enough to emotionally hook me and to really give a great deal of weight to the universe. For me, it was like watching Captain America 2. That was the movie that made the MCU "click" for me. It opened up the lore of that world in a fairly relatable way for a newcomer and had a realistic feeling gravitas to it, and same with Unicorn. From what I've read, some think even the original Gundam didn't convey the expansiveness of the history of UC's lore as well as Unicorn's 7 episodes did. So- I would say if you're curious about the UC story, watch Gundam Unicorn. At the very least, you'll have a damn good time watching some incredibly well animated and well put together mecha battles.
Of course, seeing as the show is pretty much the conclusion to the UC/Zeon story, I can see why people would feel you need to watch everything before it to get its full effect. I do wish that I had all that knowledge and emotional investment beforehand, because I'm sure it would've made the experience of watching it so much better. However, for me personally I never would've taken an interest in checking out the original UC stuff if not for Unicorn.

You know many, many people's first introduction to Gundam was Gundam Wing on cartoon network. Why no mention of that Arkada? I'm literally 100% ignorant of Gundam aside from that nostalgia Gundam Wing show I saw as a kid.
How does that show fit in with this whole universe? Should have at least mentioned it in passing.

Yep. And in the first episode of the first series they start it by dropping one the size of a city on Sydney Australia. (They were aiming for South America but things went a little off course)
The original is a space opera about a group of space colonies that declare independence from the Earth government.

If you want to go even further down the "real robot" rabbit-hole, check out Dougram. Be warned though, it is a whopping 75 episodes long, but worth every second if you (like me) are enchanted by the idea of science-fiction war stories revolving around battleoids. If I'm not mistaken, Dougram was actually a rather direct forerunner of Gundam.

Chibi only focuses on new anime, when he hasn't see classic that put anime on the global map that is today, he hasn't seen Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star, none of the original grandfather of Harem Tenchi Muyo, and practically nothing from Gundam besides Iron-Blooded Orphans.
It took his fans *_years_* to convice him to watch the original Evangelion TV series, now he compares most young pilots for Mecha to Shinji, he still hasn't seen any of the movies of it.
Chibi's problem is that because he doesn't know much anime from the 90's or 80's he doesn't know where the tropes come from, but he also doesn't know how good shows were back then compared to today.

For me it is the original mobile suit gundam as I cannot forget the rivalry Amuro vs Char they had so many battles as it was enjoying and that quite "This is no Zaku Boy!!No Zaku!! cannot get it out of my head wow such good times indeed. It felt like you're on a cliff hanger watching it too as you didn't know what was going to happen next and the entire team of the white base felt critical to the operation not just Amuro by himself which is something lots of anime lack today. Char is perhaps one of the benchmarks of anime villians in general I mean look how many has been created who were influenced by his character as someone said his the "Darth Vader of Anime".

I thought that I knew what the original story was, but after hearing your recap I finally realiized that this show is basically Tosho Daimos but with more realistic world and realistc robot fighting. I imagine a Universal Century fanfiction where its events were instigated by far darker alien actors working from behind the scenes, controlling Zeon and Neo Zeon from within the shadows as their instruments, only and always a means to an end; those being humanity's subjugation and Earth's destruction.

  • @Iceteague1

My favorites are War in the Pocket, Stardust Memory, and MS Team because while they're based in the main cannon, you don't need to know much of the previous series to get into since they have there own stories so newcomers can idea of the setting and if you watch some the series, you may get some the references and nods while watching. That how gorgeous they're animated because when your OVA series, you don't need to worry about deadlines of networks or being on a high or low budget to make about maybe 6 to 13 episodes on video wouldn't be a problem if you great talent working them. Also, I love the dubs of them because while they were made in the late 90's to early 2000's, they were dub by Animaze who did dubs like Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Outlaw Star, and Ghost in the Shell and most them ADR directed by the late great founder of the company, Kevin Seymour.

I recently introduced someone to Gundam, starting with Origin. They really liked it. However, a combination of older animation, Tomino's utterly bizarre pacing issues, and the fact that she realized everyone she liked to begin with was going to die and a totally new cast was being put in place outside of Artesia, resulted in her not really enjoying the original series so much. Although, we tried to sit through the series, as opposed to the movies. In part because the dubbing is so incredibly awful in the first movie.
We're switching to the movie trilogy, and we've been watching Gundam in "order" so she's seen some MS IGLOO and we began on 08th MS Team after the Ramba Ral arc, which she does like a lot.
But I think the lesson that is important to learn here is that if someone begins with Origin, it may feel like a slap in the face when they realize what's about to happen to characters like Dozle and Ramba, and until a friend accidentally let it slip about Mineva, she assumed even the baby was going to bite the dust as the Game of Thrones-like nature of Gundam became more and more apparent.
So, currently, I do agree to start them on the Trilogy, even if the dubbing ain't great. And then, IF they are interested in the Zeon side, show them Origin, but it seems like as of right now it's a dick move to get someone emotionally invested in a cast where 99% of them are going to die.

    • @VaalerianG
      @VaalerianG 6 років тому +4

Why would you torture yourself into enduring a bad dubbing when you can simply enjoy the normal subbed version?!?! Dubs are 95% of the time extremely bad and cringy, and even worse in older anime.
