  • In this 5th episode of the wilderness camping adventure we have a very close call on the river. There is also snow, rain, frigid temperatures. Along with my dog Saku we are on a 68 day expedition travelling for 700 kilometers through the difficult, remote and rugged wilderness of Newfoundland, Canada. We are camping far from civilization and rolling with the flow of nature.

**BACKSTORY: In the Spring of 2017 I embarked on a 700km snowshoe, Alpacka raft, backpacking expedition across the harsh yet magical Newfoundland interior wilderness. I was solo as a human but far from alone. By my side from start to finish was my loyal Cape Shore Water Dog, Saku. We went through thick and thin together in order to travel across some of the least explored wilderness regions of our province. We encountered frequent wildlife while battling desolate barrens, thick bush, mountain ranges, storms, sub-zero temperatures, raging whitewater, massive lakes, the Atlantic Ocean and monster trout. Often we were days of man-power travel away from civilization. It was a big challenge and an unforgettable blessing.
Newfoundland is the island portion of the province "Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada"
We have A LOT of unoccupied land and endless outdoor opportunities. The interior of the island is largely uninhabited. What exists is primarily remote wilderness. That is where our trip took place. From the western side of the island we traversed for the most part trackless woods and waters to reach the eastern end of the province. I documented the entire journey by camera and that is what I will share with you here on my channel.

Hey folks thanks for waiting around during the delay. I appreciate all your support.
This episode take us up to the halfway point of our 700km journey. It was a tough one for me to edit and you will find out why. You'll probably have unanswered question's and concerns. It's a difficult life out there and every reward comes with a fight. I have written a book that will go further in depth on what happened in this episode, the others and what was never filmed. It will be released this summer along with Saku's own children's book. I will make copies available to you all when possible.
As for the rest of the series there should be three more episodes out over the next three weeks. I'll keep you posted here and on my social channels. My aim is to upload Episode #6 this Sunday.
    Thanks for watchin.

wow, hooly dooly , what an episode to come back too, hey! Man, i would have have been just as torn up about saku as you were, but thankfully him and you were ok. It really goes to show how risky plans can be and how they can change in a split second.
Hopefully there aren't any more "events" like that in future episodes!
In hindsight, would you get a life vest for saku for other canoe trips in rapids? Or just not do them with him? lol
Another great video, can't wait for the next one. Cheers mate

@@hoightb Hey man thanks for watching. The jacket is a touchy subject in white water for both man and dog. The issue is the hydraulics of the river. The are a recirculating currents in holes as you may know. If I get caught in one I need to remove the jacket to get propelled out. If Saku had gotten caught the buoyancy of the jacket would likely have pinned him in there because he could not remove it himself. Rescue would have been near impossible eventually drowning him by intake of water. The best bet was for me not to run it at all, but after hammering the first two I felt unstoppable. Lesson learned for me and hopefully many others

Ugh the Newfound Marsh. In '97 I was a Katima-victim who helped cut a good portion of the East Coast Trail. I remember going out to scout and flag with a group of 5 of us. Trudging back to the car, I was last in line (and likely the heaviest) when I suddenly found myself waist deep in what had been, for the previous 4 people, solid ground. The wind and rain in this video brought back some pretty vivid and physical memories. One day I'll get back there.

A big accomplishment doesn't come easy or we would all be doing it. Risks are taken but we never want them to pan out. That was one daring white water and you paid a small ransom but got back quite the experience having been ejected from your voyage and that's what adventure is all about. How you manage to do it all yourself and still lay down an excellent video is beyond me. This series is the greatest . So glad you took the challenge.

saved this episode and 6 as I've a few days off work sat down tonight with the family (yes the whole family are watching) doesn't get better! I watched your live stream, the other week, so knew that you and Saku were ok, but when the raft tipped it didn't stop the shock, it goes too show how things can change in a split second, glad you were both ok. Thanks for bringing us with you on your journey.

The downside to your trip maybe the loss of your equipment but the upside is you found Saku down the river in 20 minutes I'm sure you're happy about that a nice trip thumbs up being in the tent with the snow coming down all cozy out there in the wilderness

The gear means nothing and Saku meant everything. Thanks for tuning in and commenting Brian, cheers. Justin

Wow all I can say is I know this is epic that's all I can say and it's thanks be to God you and your companion Saku survived, it's lent I gave up UA-cam for the week so I only watch videos on Sunday except for today is St Joseph's feast day. Bad things happen to good people that's just the way it is but God's watching over you.

That written invironment info is great. Like, I do have a sense of what a marsh is, but more precise info makes the video much more relatable. Great job man!

I‘m glad Saku is okay. He won‘t mind it much. Dogs live in the moment. But maybe you should think about a life vest for him, if you continue to do rapids with him.

Yeah for sure thanks for watching. It's a touchy subject with the life jacket on a river. If he gets caught in a recurculating hydraulic current and is wearing a life jacket he's pinned there. Without a jacket typically he would be shot out to safety. Hard to explain but my book this summer will go into much more detail. Thanks for the comment and concern

Loved this episode Justin!... I did have a legit panic attack started bawling and cried for the rest of the episode when the raft capsized and Saku was gone. I immediately thought of how I would feel if I would've been in that situation...my dogs are my everything... I can't even imagine how scared and upset you must've been before you found him. Glad you both made it out of that situation safe and unharmed. Can't wait to see the next three episodes! I'll definitely be picking up a few copies of Saku's children's book!

Justin man, this episode was great, that had me on the edge of my chair, what a great job you did staying as calm as you did. A shotgun and battery can be replaced, you and Saku can’t. A inexperienced person may not have survived this. Can’t wait for the next one

Unbelievable. My heart sank when I heard the concern/panic in your voice after capsizing and losing Saku. So glad there was just some “minor” gear loss and not something worse. Stay safe out there. Cheers.

WOW! Bit tense there. You never know, one day you're catchin fish and relaxing around the fire and the next in an instant all can change. Way to keep it cool in that situation.
I'm loving every minute of your journey and the sceneries and sunsets are crazy beautiful. Loved the shot with the stars and moon at the setting.
Thanks again for taking us along Justin.
