Worked at a metal treatment company on an industrial estate with a variety of different companies, including a cement works, based around us. Parking spaces were at a premium at our facility, with a nice level carpark for management and visitors, and the rest of us had to park wherever we could. We all noticed a nice new VW in the visitors space appearing daily and assumed one of the directors had treated himself, but the boss was as much in the dark as we were. When they finally got hold of the owner it transpired he worked at the cement works down the road, but used our car park to avoid getting cement dust on his new pride and joy. Happened at another company I used to visit and the boss told the foreman to get the fork lift and put it off site; of course, the owner was quickly on scene ranting at the foreman but it still got dumped on the road.

I used to park my shiny new Suzuki Samurai lined-up with many others on the forecourt of the Suzuki dealer near my friend's house ,so that it wasn't parked on an unlit national speed limit country road. I'm sure it must have confused anyone who played back the overnight CCTV footage!

The government could give me an interest free loan and I still wouldn't buy an EV. Halfway through the agreement your car would be worth half of what you still owe. It's a mugs game.

I remember buying a car from auction. Flat tyre and flat battery, had to be towed through. It got no bids, I got it for £60. When I looked in the glove box I found it was a repo with £1700 still owing. Mental.

Lots of 'snatch backs' going through auctions these days. Too many people living above their means.

Cheap, low deposit finance causes nothing but trouble and heartache for all involved. Sometimes the customer's own fault, and other times the fault of a greedy finance guy who stitches up someone with a bad deal just for the commission. It always ends in tears.

What's your take on Jan 2025 car sales figures? I expected something different after the December pre-reg fiasco.

      Who would have thought?
A bit early to be pre registering, just shows the state that the industry is in. Sad.

Did you notice the EV fanboy sites didn't get the SMMT data leaked out to them a day early like what happened in December?

Cleaner air by using EVs in our cities actually save the lives of children with breathing difficulties

      No, it does not.
Unlike you, I actually conducted respiratory research in the 1990s in a number of metropolitan areas via funded collaborations.
Then, there was still an excess of gaseous & particulate exhaust, tyre and brake sources.
HOWEVER, even then, we were unable to demonstrate actual deleterious effects on children’s health or anyone else’s for that matter.
30 years earlier, with lead still in petrol, very different matter.
Even in the late 1990s, we noticed funny money flowing to certain academics at Imperial College, who were willing to literally concoct false narratives using the same methodology and data we had.
One professor I know is still at it today.
Over the last 25-30 years, emissions control, stop/start, clean burn technology, multiple oxygen censors in the exhaust stack, catalytic converters, diesel particulate filters, exhaust gas recirculation, etc etc has resulted in a situation where modern passenger cars with petrol or diesel engines yield exhaust outputs slightly cleaner than the air being drawn into the intakes of the 1990s.
Only HGVs and large buses are capable of putting out unpleasant emissions and the prevalence of them where people walk is now so low that it’s problem solved.
      It’s now ALL POLITICAL SCIENCE.
The reality of the scientific findings is you cannot make a single adverse claim without employing a “model” in which you choose the input criteria and the algorithm.
      It’s literally lies.
