    Good point about .45 LC. I lived most of my life in the Midwest, but have family in the Southwest. When I was in New Mexico visiting family, I found myself in a gun store, and one of the salesmen asked if he could help me with anything. Well, I was thinking of getting a 1911 pistol in .45 caliber, and blurted out "Colt ... forty-five" as my brain wasn't fully engaged. The salesman asked "what _kind_ of Colt .45" and I thought "that's a dumb question!" I had the image of a .45 caliber 1911 in my head, and couldn't figure out how the other guy didn't. And then I remembered where I was. I had no idea that cowboy shooting had become as popular as it was, or that new copies of the old Single Action Army were flying off the shelves there. They sure weren't where I lived. Live and learn.

    Taking another trip down Memory Lane, there's the 10mm Auto. At the time there were some very high horsepower figures in the firearms world touting this round. The FBI coverted to it, S&W and Colt made firearms for it, and there was the (as it turned out ill fated) Bren 10 ultimate defensive pistol made specifically for it.
    What happened? Well, the 10mm Auto turned out to be too powerful for the vast majority of applications, and difficult to carry and shoot well. It's the auto pistol version of a .44 Magnum in terms of recoil and pressure. It gave birth to the .40 S&W which dominated the law enforcement market for decades and is still in wide use today. The 10mm still holds on as an outdoorsman cartridge due to its performance on medium/large game, but that's about it.
    The .357 SIG, which is a fantastic round, also failed to catch on.
    However, recently we've seen the .300 Blackout, 6.5 Creedmoor, and a handful of others become commercial successes due to demand and successful marketing.
    The .30 Super Carry offers duty pistol level magazine capacities in a sub compact pistol size with a performance in those pistols very comparable to 9mm. Getting 17+1 rounds in a Sig 365 XL is very appealing, and with the explosion of Constitutional carry legislation being passed in 26 states so far it would seem to be poised for success.
    While I can't predict the future better than anyone else, I think it will catch on if the marketing is successful enough because it does offer a very useful answer to the capability issue that is often raised with compact and sub compact firearms. I've never complained about having too much ammo.

I'm sure someone like Hornady or Speer could work out the expansion characteristics for the slug. However, if it remains just another odd round that can be chambered in existing frames, I'm afraid you're right. It'll just dry up and blow away.

    A few decades ago, my brother bought a Grizzly WinMag in .45 Winchester Magnum. He swore that his semi-auto was superior in every way to my revolver, and that the .45 WinMag would replace the .44 Mag by the turn of the century.
    Although the .44 Mag is no longer even close to being king of the POWER hill, it is still very popular, while the .45 WinMag is just an interesting footnote.

      I remember splash and fast disappearance of the Griz 45 Win Mag. It had several big strikes against it. First was the over-sized 1911ish handgun so it was heavy and you needed huge paws to grip it. Second, was the much higher price for this one of a kind pistol. Third, as the saying going it was a solution looking for a problem. It wasn't THAT much more powerful as a 6" .44 Mag revolver. Also, around that time handloaders with Ruger Blackhawks in .45 Colt figured out they could beat .44 Mag power.
      The Griz was an interesting engineering idea but that's about it.

      I'm of the opinion that federal made a huge mistake trying to compete with 9mm. If they had kept their loading pressures to comparable of .380, then they could have dug into the 'lower recoil, smaller gun' market. Lot of new, and specifically female shooters out there in real need of softer recoil in a gun that they can carry easily. Since Federal has explicitly stated that they're trying to target .380 prices, it wouldn't be a huge leap for customer who would have bought the .380 to choose a caliber of the same price, and same recoil that offered the opportunity to carry more rounds.

For me the number of rounds where I start to feel like yeah that's about right is 12 in the gun. More is always nicer but I wouldn't want a bigger gun to fit more.
      This cartridge makes sense for that but I think the support for it is going to be slim for a while. It's kind of like 327 Federal. If you like what it does and you reload or otherwise can ensure that you will have a decent supply of ammo then it's not that big of a deal once you have the components. I had a big pile of brass for this casting the bullets wouldn't be a big deal for practice ammo but this is the sort of caliber where the quality of the defensive projectile is going to make a bigger difference. 9 mm is already one of those calibers and this is going to be more so. If you're looking at something with more energy and mass like 40 Smith & Wesson just about any JHP will give you pretty good terminal ballistics. Good thorough subject coverage, as always Paul. I was thrilled 30+ years ago when the .32 H&R magnum came out, especially when Ruger and S&W chambered some revolvers for this new cartridge, but I only wanted a Smith 16-4 and couldn’t afford one, now they are unobtanium. Next the Hornady .327 latest and greatest came out a few years ago, “almost as powerful as a .357 and less recoil!” Recoil in a small frame Ruger SP101 was quite unpleasant. S&W produced a few J frames and Ruger is desperately trying to keep it alive, and Ammo is expensive and hard to find. What I am tying to convey here is there will always be a niche market for oddities, but will they become mainstream, who knows? I am crazy about my KelTec P32, should everyone carry one, nope but when I am going minimalist it works for me. My CZ52 and Tok M57 are a blast and could be used for defense in a pinch, however I’d rather have my Beretta 92fs or Sig P938 for serious work if I was out and about. At home it’s the Les Baer Prem II in .45 and a short 11/87 behind the door. Some folks need just one or two firearms for fun and defense, that’s what works for them. But me, I can’t have too many, so there is always room for another critter in my stable! New cartridges always peak my interest. Wants and needs are an an enigma, my wife calls it a disease.

  • @aeonise
    @aeonise 2 роки тому +58

    What I got from this is there is negligible difference in performance between .30 SC and 9mm*, mostly down to the ammo's properties, so choosing .30SC is mainly about a little extra magazine capacity at the cost of rarer ammo (with attendant issues of ammo and availability pricing). The ammo availability issue may also make it hard to find quality .30SC ammo. Unless you're desperate for a couple extra rounds in a mag, I'm not seeing cause to switch from 9mm, and .30SC just doesn't have the marked superiority it would need to fight against 9mm's inertia as an established standard.
    Also, I will never get tired of watching Mr. Harrell pull all manner of things out of those pockets.

    Seeing the results from the meat target today, I'm pretty disappointed in the .30. I really thought the JHP would have worked better, considering the 1100 FPS he was getting. Maybe something different like an HST or Critical Defense might perform like it should, but who knows.
    Also, considering that you can get an extended magazine for just about every 9mm that might only add half an inch for 2-3 extra rounds, I kind of think the .30 is trying to fill a gap that really isn't there by answering a question no one was really asking.

    In my opinion, the only real use from .30 Super is if they can manage to fit it in a (nearly) .380ACP size frame. I imagine the felt recoil would be quite brutal, though. It may find its niche, but I think that's about as big as it'll get.
    Also, two of the main reasons betamax failed are: The players were more expensive and the tapes couldn't record as long as VHS (apparently a lot of people were upset they couldn't record an entire football game with a betamax tape).

    • @edwinball985
      @edwinball985 2 роки тому +2

      From what I understand, the price difference was because Sony was keeping betamax proprietary for a long time to make more money per unit, while JVC licensed VHS to everyone and their dog. Also, apparently Sony selected a one hour recording time for Betamax based on their experience with commercial products, but once the initial design was set increasing recording time proved much more difficult. This guy has a more detailed explanation of the whole thing:
      ua-cam.com/video/FyKRubB5N60/v-deo.html

Other than that, maybe some who favor single stack 9mm would benefit from the extra couple rounds. The fact we don't, you'd have to extrapolate alot of the results to how similar are these pistols and build quality, and how much of this is just the round being fired. Nicely done video with tons of practical information. I think 30 Super Carry is an interesting caliber. The real tell will be if companies like Ruger, Sig Sauer, and Glock decide to come on board. I also agree that knowing your weapon, how to handle it, shot placement, etc., are at least as important as how many rounds one carries. Also, the S&W Shield Plus is not really a small gun when compared to something like the Ruger LCP Max .380. The S&W Shield Plus SC is 19.3 oz w/ 13 rd empty mag. The Ruger LCP Max .380 is just 10.8 oz w/ 12 rd empty mag. One thing is certain, .380 and 9mm calibers are not going away. If 30 Super Carry wants to survive, gun makers will have to produce true micro-carry platforms in this caliber. So far, the only SC pistols are from S&W and Nighthawk - and they are not micro-carry size.

As I've repeated elsewhere, 9mm has a bad habit of spiking in price thanks to periods of panic buying, and those aren't going away anytime soon. It's true though if Vista Outdoors can't manage to get the price of .30 SC down a bit, it certainly won't grow in popularity.

    I myself do appreciate the "size to scale" especially since the 30 SC is not all that common of a "carry" pistol.

      Not that common _yet_ I never thought the 40 would be common. We'll see 👀

      I bet the .30SC would become more popular as a carry pistol as a single stack ultralight. Not trying to stick a couple more rounds into a double stack magazine.

      @@ScottKenny1978 Dude I'd love to go back to a 1911 platform. I carry what the Sheriff's Deputies carry, it's a double stack.

      @@ScrappyXGC Rock Island makes a double stack 1911, but you gotta put the thinnest available grips on it yourself. For whatever reason they ship it with the same fat grips as on their single stack.

      @@ScottKenny1978 I've carried a P10-45 for years. It would me nice to get back to a commander 1911 (yes the P10 is smaller than the Officer, it was capacity so I only carried one spare, I could bring 21 to bear every day, 31 if I wasn't working) didn't need replacement grips. Going from 8 (10 in the P10) to 12 in a single stack would be outstanding. The +P's... I use +P's in *every* pistol, hopefully not against any person. The P 10 is 11 +10 beats the hell out of 9 + 8 on a work day. You probably think like me, COM, 5X5 square or round at engagement. This possibility exists that we can have 13 + 12 on a work day. And a slim standard 1911, vs my 14 + 13, currently. I'm looking forward to the +P that rivals what's coming out of my G23.
      It's a bitch to pocket carry that when you just have to go. P10 just a small brick, Commander no one would notice. Toooooo many reviews comparing it to the 9, it should be the 40 and why or why not. A huge number of departments use the 40. Only reason I constant carry it. They need a mag, I got them, I need a mag they can get me. Non work day, multiply 13 by 3 and add one to that number, yea I busted out laughing when I realized how many rounds of 40. That laugh was good
