Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! shop.forgottenw...
I don't normally take actual backup guns to the backup gun match; it's usually some oddball old pistol. But today, I decided to bring out the new S&W Shield Plus in .30 Super Carry. It's actually exactly the sort of gun that the match is designed for. I chose to minimize the size of the gun by using the 13-round flush magazine instead of the extended 16-rounder.
I took the generous magazine capacity of the .30SC to heart and treated the little Shield Plus more like a service handgun than a backup carry piece, liberally dumping rounds at every target.Combined with the compact Sentinel red dot optic, this was a great combination - I nearly won the whole match!

Other people there must've been really confused, seeing Ian show up with something that's not weird, this time
Come on... 30 super carry is not common from what I have heard.
It's more like... "Look. Ian brought a weird gun thats looking like a normal one."
It *is* weird, just not obviously so.
Sure that when Ian shows up with something that *looks* normal, the regulars will be looking closer.
I thought a bug match was a house spider vs arm chair pistol show down. Damn
And to think I'm a ffl. Shit lol
Oh just wait to see what else he was shooting that day...
Showed up with a gun that isn't over 100 years old. Strange.
He had to be sweating 7.65 French long or .30 super Carry🤔
He did shot with laugo before
@LabRat Knatz 9mm largo would be cool if it could out perform .38 super auto
That's just super.
Probably had to check his ID to make sure it wasn't someone personating him.
'So, what did Ian bring this time? A belt-fed machine gun? A sniper rifle?'
'He brought a S&W Shield Plus in .30 Super Carry.'
I meant Ian McCollum, you know, the Forgotten Weapons guy?'
'He brought a S&W Shield Plus in .30 Super Carry.'
'OK, if you don't want to tell me, don't, just stop being a jerk about it...'
It wouldn't be a belt fed machine gun, he'd bring a 1902 trials belt-feed conversion of trapdoor rifle, that someone converted to FN5.7
Belt fed derringer.
Hopper-feed carbine
Rocket-ball chain-fed pistol..

I've been watching Forgotten Weapons for years, and I really appreciate how far Ian has come with his shooting proficiency. It's really cool to see as a long time fan. Keep up the great work!
Thanks!
He's given me hope that I can improve

Can 9mm S&W owner order a .30 Barrels to drop in the frame?
Both .40 & 9mm S&W shield (BUGS) share the same frame and can swap barrels (experienced owner tested positive) it should be a non issue.
✌️
@@copcuffs9973 They can’t, he discusses why in his video on the pistol.
But can he do the spinner with it?
This must be Ian from the future traveling back in time with an antique Smith and wesson.
No other explanation, period!
The caliber must have flopped with the guns becoming ultra rare, hence the BUG match
Ian making gamer jokes.
We achieved perfection.
Rarely do I bust out laughing at a Forgotten Weapons video but "that's called a pro move, gamer tip" absolutely cracked me up
@@frofrozzty same
Ian at bug match, places 27/35 shooters. Ian with a normal gun at a bug match, places 3rd lol
This makes me more and more interested in a second gen CSX in .30 SC
Some people will say the round is too wimpy, but I've never met a person willing to stand down range of a 22. 13 rounds of get-the-hell-away-from-me in a small easy to conceal package sounds brilliant
‘Some People’ can be idiots.
CoughdemocratsCough
There is simply too little data for the .30SC to see if the 8-9% less energy make a difference and how the higher pressure is handled with higher round count. Someone would need to shoot thousands of rounds through a pistol that is built the same in 9mm and .30SC and document damage, dirt build up, bore cam footage.
My concern isn’t wether or not the person on the wrong end is willing or not but if they’re fucked up enough to not realize or understand they’re on the wrong end of the gun. Could this stop the homeless guy blitzed out on pcp from smashing my head in with a shovel on a bike trail? Maybe, maybe not. But that’s the same answer I have with 9mm or any other pistol caliber (aside from maybe 10mm). It all comes down to well placed shots on target and a platform that gives me more rounds and lighter recoil probably helps that out a little bit.
This is a dumb analogy.
Would you stand there and let me throw rocks at you from 20 feet away? Does that mean that rocks are a good self-defense item?
Oh my Ian,he did great!
This doesn't happen often
You cannot understate how much better Ian got with pistols since he started the videos on competition shooting.
Where he was a solid midfielder with iron sights at the beginning, he is now a solid Top 5 competitor with a modern gun with a good trigger and a red dot.
Nice little "blaster" :D - Nice seeing you actually using something competitive (not that I don't enjoy you bringing guns that most people - who aren't into firearms (even if only passively, as owning any in Germany is a hassle!) - either have never even heard of or which are at least normally not seen anymore!) and showing how good you are! I mean with a real side-arm (so what you'd call a service-pistol) you probably would have won this, especially if you went with extended mags (and if allowed: A laser!)
I thought full-size pistols wouldn't be allowed in the Back-Up Gun match
@@ChoChan776 This is a compact. Currently only S&W currently has any pistols in this caliber. I expect this will change very soon.
BTW: Ian has used some very large 1900's era semi auto pistols in this match; maybe he got an exception.
I think on S&W has this option out so quickly before the others because the shield's magwell has always been kinda "long" since gen 1, while the sig365 and then later the Springfield high capacity micro 9's went with much shorter (backstrap to trigger measurement) length... So now if the other other companies want to jump in on the action they will have to produce molds and recievers to fit the longer .30 super carry rounds/magazines... S&W kinda played it smart by not changing their design width wise when moving to the shield+ although people complained it wasn't as small as the competition... I guess time will tell on this cartridge 🤷♂️
I was initially disappointed that you werent running the match with trash but this was nice too.
I want to see S&W make a PC ported version of this. The high pressure 30SC round should really be able to drive the ports hard and negate a lot of recoil.
If the cartridge takes off I imagine S&W would offer a performance center version, which has a ported barrel as an option, in .30 super carry.
The always on auto brightness version of the swamp fox works well, the dot dims to basically off in the holster and by the time it moves up into eyeline the dot is on and working correctly
Very good display of the qualities of this gun and the ammo. Thanks!
Try the Pearce Grip PG-MPPL bottom plate on the Shield+ short (9mm X 10 and .30 S/C X13 round) magazines. It gives your 3rd finger support without adding capacity. Better control, same concealability.
Here's a theory about Ian's use of the 30 Super Carry Shield Plus. It might have something to do with his affinity for the 7.65 French Long cartridge. He did an interesting video comparing similarities between the 30 Super Carry and the 7.65 French Long, it's worth a watch!
I probably also have something to do with the fact that Ian is knowledgeable, realistic and not at all a fan of neither "tacticool mentality" nor "hand cannoneering" in general.
That kick in the third stage was so powerful it broke the microphone
HEEYAWWWWW
Ive honestly never heard a microphone do that from a kick alone lmao
Great video as always! I'm a big 9X19 fan too. .30 Super carry seems to be the shiznet. If you haven't seen Miculek's run down on the round and weapon it's worth a look. on the other hand placing 3rd out of 35 deserves a pat on the back! Btw, call your senator and tell them no mo disarmament rhetoric of any kind!
I LOVE YOU IAN!!!!
Now I am comfortable enough to get a Shield in .30SC. Will shelf my compact HP for this one.
Thank you for showing us your performance at BUG match. This and my average shooting alone will fit nicely.
I look at this fellow and think “if it came with a suppressor as well, this would be perfect for the Ares Light Fire 70 pistol from the Shadowrun tabletop game.” The flush mag is only 3 rounds less than the standard 16 the Light Fire gets, extended mag would fix that issue, and you can get the Light Fire in game without the suppressor too.
Great job as usual, I really think this round has a promising future bridging the Gap.
When you kicked that barrel every cardboard target everywhere craped its pants
Lol
Thanks for this video about the .30 Super Carry and S&W pistol. I'm impressed, but I'm in CA and will probably never see this pistol for myself.
4:03 to see him double cheeked up
First ever video iv seen of it in use in a practical environment. Thank you.
Props to the safety concern and procedures of the other guy with the timer
don't know if it will unseat the 9mm but it's definitly an upgrade to .38 even .38+p. in power AND capacity. the rest is a matter of price: if it becomes significantly cheaper than 9, people who shoot a lot will start to consider it.
I like how Ian drops shots and just laughs it off. Anti-gun people will maybe never understand that for most of us, we're just out for the fun of it.
I have the same gun and optic in 9mm and I am very pleased. First optic pistol and it's new life for myb72 year old eyes. Fun video to watch. Thanks
I have this exact optic on my 43x and I've only had this power off issue happen once at a steel challenge match. I ran all of woodland with this pistol (shield arms mags) with no problems from the firearm.
S+W mp shield. My pop has one in 45 apc. One in 9mm standard. The iridium night iron sights are on point. Love the weight and trigger weight. No stag points if pocketed as a EDC. MP shield is a good platform.
I have a Swampfox Blade in my rifle. Great optic. Motion ready lighting.
I quite like the ergonomics of the S&W M&P Shield, and it's my carry gun (in 9mm) so this was quite nice to see.
I'm curious: What was the difference in score between 1st, 2nd, and 3rd and/or would your dropped points from running dry have made up that difference?
I believe time; if everyone had the same # of points then it’s whoever did it the fastest I think. But I’m not a competitive shooter so that’s just a guess
@Ene ywnbam
@@Hephera ahh I can see I may have misread the question. Oh well.
Scores are online (Google Tucson back up gun match), top 4 scores were 117, 109, 106. Winner’s stage scores were 26, 24, 40, 27. Ian got 24, 25, 34,23.
"that's called a pro move, a gamer tip there." absolutely incredible
Would love to see 30SC combined with the zspring magazines made by magguts. My p365 can hold an additional 2 rounds with just a simple spring and follower change, and the spring force is more consistent across the range of it's compression, making loading those last few rounds easier, while also making the final rounds of a magazine feed more reliably. Would love to see a p365x holding 18+ rounds of 30sc in a flush mag.
Time for ETS to get to work
I think we are going to see some very interesting things in.30 super carry 👍
I think you’re right. Maybe a carbine? I think it would make a great little sub machine gun for law enforcement. MP 5 size, not over powered but would do the job in a crowded city environment.
I can see that I need new .30SC cylinders for my .30 Blackhawks...
What the hell, he brought something actually good to the match?
Not a single malfunction! What's even going _on_ anymore?!
I'd love to see you do one of these with something crazy like a 460 or 500.
He's done it with a Wildey in 45 WinMag.
Seems like this is one case where it would be handy to have a summary of how scoring works at this range. Clearly here, you're allowed any capacity, rather than the match specifying 5 or 10 rounds per stage, and time matters, i.e. there's a per-second penalty or something.
Normally I don't care, since Ian's just showing off some weird 100 year old pistol, but in this case he's talking about capacity and why that matters in this match.
What I have taken away from the BUG matches, is that they are designed so that they _can_ be cleaned with a 6 or 8 shot revolver, without the need to reload. But you basically need to get dead center headshots on each target to achieve that.
I believe for scoring you need a single center headshot, or two center hits on the torso to clean the target.
Edit: I have never been to the BUG match, I am just taking my assumptions from having watched Ian's videos.
So when do we get a head-to-head competition between .30 SC vs .30 French Longue?
Thank you , Ian .
Shield plus is my EDC and I have been very happy with it! With Magguts I am getting 13+1 (9mm) in the short magazine and with the Holosun 507K its's plenty fast/accurate within 15 yards.
I'd never heard of MagGuts before and had to google it. Please try to capitalize that second G in the future.
@@Bacteriophagebs NOT CAPITALIZING IS MY SUPERPOWER! Fortunately your ninja level Google (yes, capital G) skills got you there! Jokes aside, I have had their spring kits in my Glock 42, and M&P 1.0 shield 9mm for thousands of rounds now with out a single issue.
Now I want to see the super 30 now in desert brutality pistol round
Hopefully he uses it in cornfield brutality!
How many rounds to spin the spinner?
@@mlpeacecraft339 about 12 if I remember his last video correctly
EDIT: I did not remember it correctly, he used 16, but wasting 2 or 3 shots
Ian read and followed the assignment this time.
Kel Tec P30 is the handgun I want to see in 30 SC. 7 round flush and 10 or 11 round extended, full grip mag.
Super excited for the future of gun innovation
Cool little pistol, this just popped into my head watching this. Do you think we will see a pistol that has a red dot integrated into it in place of iron sights in the next couple of years?
I don't see why they don't integrate a retractable optic. It should fold into the slide for carry and deploy when drawn.
Im glad you finally got your 32 French Long buddy
Neat to see that even those .30 caliber rounds have enough inertia to take down even the larger plates.
Except for the poppers requiring 2 shots each to go down. I would've hoped for a little more punch. 9x19 has no issue knocking down a popper, so while they may seem somewhat comparable on paper; the 9x19 definitely outperforms .30SC.
I can’t wait to see what happens if mag guts releases a conversion for Super Carry. 15-16 rounds in the short mag and 17-18 in the long one is my guess.
Ian is perfect for 2:20 just needs a cowprint vest and spurs on his heels
Quantity has a quality all its own.
Let’s call that ‘Movie Cowboy Syndrome’.
Great job Ian! I really liked this practical use review.
God bless all here.
Haven't got to fool around with one of these but I'm really hoping this caliber catches fire
All this talk about Super Carry has got me thinking about another round - the .240 Page Super Pooper - that would be fun to see on FW!
Very nicely shot!
Damn, Ian looking sharp.
.30 Super Carry, the thinking man's carry gun!
Looks like a good defence pistol tbh.
Hey Ian, I think there is a problem with the audio, you should check the mic and see what you can do to repair it or get someone look into it, have a nice day!
Now I want a .45 Super Carry developed soon. In a full size service pistol no less.
Guns often have "Caution, can be fired without magazine attached" or "Read manual before firing" written on them. This should have an old saying "Too much abundance leads to waste"
I have been considering getting a new pistol and it may be one of those now that I have seen this video
Ian,
Have you noticed ( as I have) that it seems a lot of 9x19 fans are suddenly eschewing the idea that a smaller caliber which allows a higher round count is a good thing? I’m hearing a lot of “It’s a smaller weaker bullet” and “If you can’t win a gunfight with x number of rounds having more wont help” and I’m finding it very entertaining.
Well yes, because 9 and above JHPs expand to the same diameter, making calibre irrelevant other than felt recoil and capacity. This IS definitively smaller and therefore "weaker".
@@skepticalbadger 9x19 is weak.
All pistol calibers are weak.
Haha, same argument you used to hear from all the revolver fans back in the 70's & 80's.
which is weird, this is meant as a backup caliber (to my understanding), it is meant to be smaller but still usable
It's a cool idea or whatever, I just don't dig the prices on the ammo and the 50k PSI operating pressure.
Your shooting improved a lot! You had good teacher
With that background, I was expecting Mixup98 to walk up with a Stoeger Coach.
Karl just did the 1770 Charleville French trading musket. Got hits with it at a hundred yards too.
30 super looks outstanding.
30 carry was the worst industry plant since that r51 jam-o-matic
“9 Parabellum is perfectly sufficient.” Guys who shoot historical guns and understand ballistics rate 9 mm highly as a personal defense cartridge, because with modern ammunition it literally outperforms any popular pistol cartridge that predated the .357 magnum. My backup 9 mm hits with 450 foot pounds of energy. That’s over TWICE the power of the 1851 Navy revolver, and that pistol set the standard of lethality for the American Civil War and western frontier. Hell, that’s 150 more foot pounds than the 1860 Army revolver which was used to stop horses in battle. Modern shooters are spoiled with power.
kinda misleading, people today want threats to be stopped instantly, not necessarily lethality, getting shot with a soft lead ball back then would be death or amputation, even with small bullets. antibiotics and medical procedures were in their infancy in those days. 30 carry is probably enough for carry though, shot placement and rapid shots are more important than power in my opinion unless you are dealing with hogs or a bear or something big.
Okay and what does this particularly have to do with Ian running .30 super carry in this video?
The issue is that .30 super carry is NOT as powerful as 9mm. There are SOME loads of 30 SC that are comparable to SOME loads of 9mm, but on average, 9mm IS more powerful than 30 SC.
Paul Harrel did a video on 30 SC and was not impressed.
@@theodorehunter4765 it isnt more poweful than 9mm, but does it have to be? its more powerful than 380 and alot of people still carry it so seems fine for people who want capacity over power 🤷♂️
@@theodorehunter4765 @Defzen343 is right....there are millions of 380 guns out there and they are adequate to stop a fight...loud noise, bang, ouch!!!!!, is all that is normally required to reverse a self defense condition. Few bad guys 'run towards the sound of gun fire' . Typically this is a rapid response so I can get away or allow partner to grab a bigger gun to back me up.
Strongly considering the performance center version, still deciding if 9 or 30sc. Other contender is the csx performance center when they come up with one

With a magnet in the holster it is possible to build off in the holster on out of the holster sight. Hint hint manufacturers.
I'm looking forward to more firearm manufacturers picking up on the cartridge and coming up with alternatives. I'd like to see a micro single stack.
Probably running it with French long. Like the hi point.
woah what a cool pistol, i never knew a gun like that would draw intrest from me.
"Gamer tip"?? Ohhhh so that's why Ian is so good at shooting! I thought he just practiced his aim like a dirty boomer scrub lol. He actually acquired all that skill from from being an epic gamer. Let's hope society doesn't force him to go siko mode or else we'll all be in trouble.
Ok zoomer
I suspected he had a new gaming chair.
Ian kicking that barrel as it was someone advocating a bolt action rifle superior to a self loader 😂
Lets be fair here, how many backup guns have red dots on them? So turning it off by accident really just evens the playing field.
Red dots are becoming ubiquitous. And when you're getting battery life of 50k hours (5.7 years) it's not the risk of failing when you need it that it used to be. As he noted, the press-to-deenergize button was annoying and unusual.
I'm not sure how I feel about red dots on firearms. I mean they are neat but is this really the future 🤔. I guess they are because of how fast you can aquire targets but idk.
@@tek4 whats better then?
I have a "always on" red dot and a laser/light combo on my conceal weapon (shield plus). Can't say that I'm willing to buy a pistols that isn't optic ready now, it's so natural and effective. It gives me a fighting chance, because lord knows I need it.
@@tek4 I can't fathom how you can be "unsure" about red dots.
Sweet.
Wait, this is FW, I should say "slick"
I'm wondering how .30 Super Carry will do in a PC Carbine, and what longer range ballistics and terminal wound characteristics would be?
Wound characteristics are determined by bullet construction. As shown in the Paul Harrell video, the .30 Super Carry Golden Sabers and Gold Dots had disappointing expansion. With higher velocity from a longer PCC barrel though, you'd probably get good expansion from those loads.
