@@ted__ryan I don't think anyone is saying he can't do whatever he wants, but that it's a bit of a waste of everyone's time to make a rundown of a rig that doesn't work.
I actually think Stephen's superficial mindset is pretty creative in a sense. By picking what looks good and ending up with a bunch of random specifications that may not traditionally "work", you do end up with your own unique sound. Rather the than looking for the tone, you let the tone find you. Who knows, you may even learn to love it.
+KDowah Amen to that. my lil Kustom dual 30RC has the most ASSAULTING, disgusting dirty tone & I felt, at the middle school age, that I HAD to get a pedal to "clean it up". Nowadays, I see the amp's tone as a superb raw black metal/grindcore/crust punk voicing. Guess I had to become a better player to understand, appreciate,&utlilize a "bad" tone
+KDowah , yeah I guess... I personally feel he's expressing what a lot of guitar players are like, myself included: you try to rationalize the functionality of a piece of gear for having spent X amount of dollars on it, but often times you buy it because it's pretty and shiny.
Sam Love Oh yeah, I get that he's just bought whatever looks cool. I just think it's unintentionally affected the tonal development of the band. A happy coincidence, sure, but you can't argue with the results. They sound better than ever.
Sergio seems like a cool dude, and talks like a true musician. I like that he uses a pick. Stephen and Sergio are rad and unpretentious. The Deftones are such a sick band!
Greetings from the past, Stephen!! We met at Club DNA for that A&R show we did together in 1994. I played after you guys with The Sun; AND you were gracious enough to let me borrow your ADA midi patch changer, as mine took a crap just before we played. Congratulations on your career!! Cheers! Jason Roach
Stephen is my kind of guitar player. He totally shreds and is really down to earth which I think threw off this interviewer. "so why do you use this"? Steph: "uh, I dunno, I like the way it looks". Lol.
@S Jamison fieldy is a spectacular bass player. are you one of those guys who only listens to calculus shred music? even if you are, a lot of the bass parts on follow the leader are NOT easy to play at all. it doesn't have to be unusual time signatures to be hard to play
@Michael B. no. field is awesome. i would like him to be WAYYY more prominent on korn cds these days, like how he was super prevalent on follow the leader and life is peachy. the producers are always turning him down
Him seeing his gear from a superficial standpoint takes me back to when I was a kid and daydreamed over his guitars thinking the just looked so cool. Simpler times, man. I’d love to get back to that in music, and life in general.
Stephen is and has been my favorite guitarist and musician since the moment I heard Around the Fur in 97". He is a the best in capturing all types of kind emotion in h8s riffs.
It's strange how he said he can't think of a bass player in heavy music that uses their fingers... yet he's taken Chi's spot and he only used his fingers..
I've been listening to Deftones since the first album. They are awesome. Maybe Stef's superficial but it works for them. Sergio is awesome. I loved quicksand
Damn Axe FX has made rig run downs boring. "This is my Axe FX... it's cool, nice patches, I press these buttons, I blend these amps." No actual gear to talk about anymore.
No need to be overcomplicated about gear. Deftones have been one of my favorite bands for years, and they stay true to who they are. No need to be all technical about everything. Find your amp, guitar, some pedals, and just play.
My favorite guitarist of all time. Love the tone he achieved with be quiet and drive. My favourite song of all time. I bought that yellow MXR pedal that he supposedly used to make it but it never sounded the same as the album.
I’ve always had my eye on that black B8 with the red pups/esp logo. I think he retired that one not many pics of him playing that one but it’s my fav of his 8’s
i love stephen carpenter. i wish he was my uncle... o__O most importantly "i put those ones in there, they look great, the guitars look great, they feel great... it's up to ME to make them SOUND great". love that.
haha so cool to see an interview where the musician looks less stoned than the interviewer. guess you had a good time ;) great interview none the less!
Chi Used his fingers in this heavy music and it sounded pretty damn good to me. And for Deftones also being a melodic band I would say using fingerstyle would be more fitting
i just saw them tonight in seoul south korea, different bass players, used an orange tiny terror. the guitariste used 2sets of orange black terror, dunno about the effects, but sounded huge
UnderEternalSkies fact is a lot of players use their fingers because that's how they learned. I played with either pick or fingers depending on the vibe of the song, as well as that I played guitar before bass and still play guitar.
Premier Guitar is GrrrrrrEAT! y0u guys are s000000 awes0me i d0n't kn0w what to d0 with myself! Carpenter was just s000000 FL00RED by your inquisition he c0uldn't c0ntain himself!
There's something so weird about the whole Axe-FX thing; everybody's got one now but no one seems to be able to replace their entire rigs with one although that's what Fractal Audio essentially says the unit should be able to do. Looking at Stephen's rig. He replaced his JMP-1, the Rocktron Intellifex and the TC2290 with an Axe FX (2 in fact), so that's 4 rackmount spaces worth of gear replaced by 4 rackmount spaces of gear (?!) So what I'm saying is, are people getting into the Axe-FX cos it sounds great or cos it's just the latest gadget to have?
degge You're looking at rack spaces in an extremely myopic way. Steph is now using just the Axe FX II, with a controller, and a power conditioner. He didn't just replace all of his rack gear, he also replaced all of his analog pedals, the inconsistencies and idiosyncrasies that come along with maintaining that sort of rig over time, and he even shed a cab -- probably as the result of being able to properly emulate the low-end he was missing using just the 1960 Marshall. That was a drastic reduction in space, complexity, and maintenance (and the second AF is simply a redundancy -- a backup). If you owned an Axe FX yourself (I own an Ultra and am somewhat biased) you would absolutely appreciate the diversity and simplicity it brings to the table. Where before I had to have a Triple Rec, Orange Rockerverb, VH4, and Marshall head (and their respective cabs) laying around, I now have one unit that effectively emulates all of that, both live and in the studio, and now I can spend my money on guitars, which is what I prefer to do.
Silverjerk Hey dude, i was actually thinking on getting an axe fx ultra, but im new to the whole fractal thing. and i keep reading that the axe 2 is better, but a grand more. what are the main differences, and which on should i go with?
this was a weird rig rundown..."tell us about your setup" "I'm changing everything"
+Tommy McCracken and couple of years later, he's back to rig with bunch of pedals without Axe, i think
+Tommy McCracken "I'm changing everything"
"It's all for looks"
"This wasn't worth it"

Lol...
He looks more like the bassist of linkin park..
i thought he was the bassist of linkin park
He sounds a lot like him lol, especially when he says "songs"
I love Stephens guitar playing style. He has been an inspiration to me and my guitar playing almost since I started playing guitar.

All the heavy grunge bass players of the early 90’s were finger players. Picks don’t make anything heavier.
