- Sergio Vega joined the Talk Toomey Podcast to discuss his latest writing and production project. In this clip, Sergio talks about releasing his statement about leaving Deftones. He talks about the original plan of the band not releasing a statement about his departure and why he felt he had to speak up when the promo photos without him were released.

I'm a long time Deftones fan and think they did him dirty. He was seen as a member and treated like one to the point of contributing to the albums. It's not right.
I agree it's a little fucked up. He deserves better. I know there are always two sides of a story but the fact they didn't respond makes me question them

He was done dirty. I mean he said it wasn't even bout the money, so why not?! If he was asking for more if he was going to get royalties which cut into the bands cut. Especially if the band is still paying Chi's family. I would really like to know the particulars because it doesn't make any sense on why they wouldn't have him as a full member of the band. He created 4 new albums with them!!!!

There’s two sides to everything, if it was 4 guys in disagreement with/against 1, there’s definitely more to it behind the scenes than him simply wanting to be an official member & it’s not as simple as they’re wrong he’s right or vice versa
As a fan of Deftones, got to give credit to Sergio for how he handled this, what a pro! He'll always be part of the family
I love the Sergio-Deftones albums. All four of them are great additions to the catalog. In fact, Diamond Eyes and KNY are masterpieces in my eyes.
Sucha tremendous force, Sergio. He was a huge contribution after they lost Chi Cheng. Very sad he's out of the band...😔😔

When someone is both a “session musician” and a “touring member” of the band, that means they’re a member of the fucking band.
Sergio is a stand up dude. He saved Deftones ass. I love the Deftones, but how rude of them. Shame on them!

Just finding out about this sorry im late, as i saw deftones a few days ago and asked myself where's sergio. Loved his energy from a previous show in 2015 indeed contributed a major sound to his years of involvement.
Once you get past like year 3 of being the fill-in bassist, how do you not make that official? There has to be more to this story, but it really doesn't matter now. It was a good era for Deftones. Hopefully they address this in the future.

I was so bummed out with the absence of Sergio. Perfect fit for the tones but I'm glad it was clarified. All said, you can't stop a great, kind human being from moving forward and that's what he is doing. Love you Sergio.

When this all went down I was pretty upset about it and still am to this day. Haven't listened to any of their music don't drink their beer anymore and don't wear their shirts. I feel slapped in the face as a fan. I've really had trouble figuring how they didn't see him as a member. I mean the guy gave more interviews on behalf of the band while the band was sitting behind him on several occasions. He's also included at the Forefront of most of their photographs that get taken. When it all comes down to it it's really allowed me to appreciate just how great of a musician this man is and appreciate quicksand even more

I've been a Deftones fan since 2000 but it's fucked up what they did to Sergio. There's no real good excuse for why they did that to him.

I agree they did him dirty I’m a deftones fan but this is bad on their part the way they just used this guy and didn’t make him part of the band it’s not right.

Deftones version 2.0 is incredible. Sergio was an amazing addition. I am not really vibing with this new iteration. Sergio's absence is greatly felt.
Just make room for the guy; if it really is just about membership then make your lawyer earn his money for once and rewrite your operating/incorporating agreements to make Sergio a minority member. We're all old now, and we know "it's a business"- many of us own our own, and _we_ know that it's monumentally stupid to do this to people who contribute as much as Sergio has. It always costs you more, in the long run, to ghost someone who is (effectively) a partner.

I dont think they made it clear enough with sergio that he was always going to be a session player. It does leave a bitter taste because.. dude has been with them since 2009, yikes. But its their band, they decide whos going to be official. You have to respect that despite how they do business, theyre not perfect. And im not trying to say bassists are not essential but they can be recorded by the guitarist too or even chino himself since he can play the guitar too or anyone in the band that knows basic chords really.
as much as i love the band, how they did business was straight ass, had him there 11 years and never once mentioning that he was strictly there for sessions and touring. a decade worths of dedication and legit love from the dude just thrown out because no one could be up front with him

So, why did sergio lie about the Chi story? He must've "did" something very shady for deftones NOT to talk to him during the grammy awards.

“Fucked him over” implies they didn’t pay him or something. I’m not in love with the way they did this, but everything they did was contractually legal and they came to a decision.

Is all gotta be Chino, I mean he did steal Far's guitarist Saun Lopez and start new band and hasn't done shit with Jonah since that went down. To me that is no coincidence. I feel bad for Jonah, it's like, I think Chino is a great writer but to me it's kinda crazy and selfish.
Jonah produced chinos vocals and lyrics for Saturday Night Wrist.

I remember when 7-Words premiered on 120-minutes, Ive been down with these dudes for a long time, they've been my favorite band for most of my life, but I'll never be cool with the way they treated Sergio.

I love both bands, but I never liked the original deftones bassist, Sergio made them better, the albums with him are my favorite deftones albums. Not the I don’t like the early ones, but I NEVER liked his bass tone. Vega is just a way better bass player and they’re gonna suffer from losing him. They were already starting to repeat themselves with the last album anyway, quicksands new album is great tho
