    At the core of the American myth, we find the rags to riches story. To become wealthy and successful, in a society where all are supposedly born equal is proof of one’s qualities, one’s work ethic, intelligence and general value to society. To be wealthy is to be worthy and wealth therefore needs to be shown, and celebrated. The celebration of wealth in America is all over pop culture and to return to the wolf of wall street, the film revels in everything that comes with a wealthy lifestyle. It shows mansions and yachts, supercars and helicopters while also indulging in every vice of the superrich, lavish parties, alcohol, drugs and sex. And after almost three hours of unbridled excess, there is no reckoning, no condemnation or downfall. Instead, Belfort is still selling and the camera. turns to us. Suggesting we all are complicit in a culture where wealth and excess is so celebrated.
    Now this video is not a political argument about the distribution of wealth. Instead what I want to put the focus back on social status and wealth, about that in the American dream, wealth not only needs to be earned, it needs to be flaunted to show one’s success, to show ones value. What this current crisis has once again pointed out is how badly prepared we are. American saving rates are bad and very few people has an 6 month or 1 year emergency savings. It is clear that during economic prosperity, spending also goes up. As contrapoints argues, we live in a society that equates wealth with success, with being valuable, but most of us will never achieve extreme wealth, so what do we do, we fantasize and we fake it.
    The need to amass and flaunt wealth then comes from existential dread. In our individualistic society we are all born to feel special, to be something special. To be kings or queens, te bo aristocratic, to be the greatest at something. And in America the aristocracy are the rich and famous. The celebration of excess then is the conflation of financial success with the higher fulfillments of life. The American dream proposes that becoming wealthy, and flaunting that wealth by buying stuff, to gain social status fullfills needs like purpose, love, happiness and fulfilment.
    A great work ethic, ambition and trying to increase your income in combination with financial minimalism, saving and a safe, long term investing strategy such as Index Funds is the best of both worlds. There is just as much enjoyment to be had in actively saving money as there is in buying stuff, probably even more. And financial stability and peace of mind will give you the freedom to pursue other needs like love, purpose and happiness. Or as John Goodman says it in the Gambler achieve the f you position. (insert). Achieving wealth is not about social status, opulence or excess consumerism. Achieving wealth is about freedom, stability and peace of mind. And as personal finance channels like Graham Stephan advice

      What really struck me during this pandemic was how a lot of the Essential workers were grocery store workers.....coffee shop employees....cleaners... And they all make up the lowest paid employees. Minimum wage and part time workers with no benefits.

    "To become to become wealthy and successful in a society where we are all supposedly born equal, is proof of one's qualities" I think this especially rings true for me. I want to prove to not necessarily others but myself that I can be a somebody. I don't just want to be, I want to be better. I recognize this is an unhealthy mindset and am compliant with it.

    • @ResistanceQuest
      @ResistanceQuest 4 роки тому +7

      I think there is a way to balance "being better" with the pursuit of wealth. I think the mistake is probably in pursuing wealth for wealth's sake, i.e. equating wealth with betterness. If you are trying to find yourself and happiness in wealth alone, there is a good chance it will lead to the outcomes that *you know to be evil* or, as you put it, negative. But if you spend some of your time trying to figure out who you are, what your principles and beliefs are, and how to act on them in a way that makes the world better, I think you will find more substance in wealth and hence more happiness. Don't ignore your conscience now regarding the pursuit of wealth for the sake of self-serving simplicity. Listen to it (your conscience) and figure out how to live in alignment with it while also pursuing your goals of financial success. Just a thought.

    • @ResistanceQuest
      @ResistanceQuest 4 роки тому +7

      It's also worth considering if we are, indeed, all "born equal" in a country (I'm in the US) with such high income inequality and a large prison population. If we are "born equal", what does that say about poor people and recidivist convicts? Does it say that they are dispositional fuckups, predisposed or inclined for whatever reason to "choose" to live at the economic bottom? And therefore, the "wealthy and successful" are possessed of some intrinsic or proximately superior will or nature that propels them towards its top. This is, of course, the ancient mythology of wealth that prevails even today.
      But consider, on the other hand, that perhaps we're not "born equal" in the sense that we don't all have equal access or opportunity, security, protection before the law, or political freedom. This would mean that it is not necessarily something intrinsic to anyone's character that determines their wealth or position, but rather external factors, and therefore a high degree of economic success is less a marker of superior character and more of a perhaps heightened awareness of these factors and ability to manipulate them.
      Once again, just an idea.

    Interresting thought experiment, however there're two points in this analysis that aren't fleshed out (well). First is, if you live less materialistic you don't need the amount of money of a wealthy person. To put it in words of the analysis: the amount of money needed to reach your financial stability becomes less.
    Second point. As the aristocracy lost their place, so are the rich and famous lose their statue of grandeur right now. So that begs the question - what type of persons will become the new hero's? Who will the people be that a society looks up too and how does a society makes that decision?

      @@krypto276 i can't help myself but snigger a little bit when people claim that capitalism is the heart of the system - and that it will never change. Most of the time it shows a lack of historic understanding of capitalism and of the many, many revolutions that changed the world.
      Capitalism started to emerge in the 17th century. Quite late if you ask me.
      A pandemic can and will most certainly change the world (maybe not corona and i think probably not corona), but the black death in Europe for example changed the position of the working class. It even fuelled the movement towards the Renaissance. Without the black death we wouldn't have had the Renaissance, or at least much much later.
      Most changes happened when the 'have not's' became fed up with the 'have's'. A good example is the french revolution. Or the socialist revolution. The spring revolution in the arab world in more recent times. Heck, you can even argue that poverty fuelled the rise of hitler and anti-semitism. If japan didn't dragged the US into that conflict - chances are that Europe would be a fascistic empire right now.
      You can think of these revolutions and wars what you will, but the fact is that capitalism didn't played a major role in all of these - it was the miss use of power which led to these revolts

    Wow, I really love your message in this video. And I laughed out loud at the end. I've mistakenly used films like Fight Club and They Live to take a rebellious side against wealth, security, and materialism. Your video reminds me that while I can be a critic of materialism and individualism, I cannot use narratives like Fight Club to ignore the fact that I take part in the very system that encourages these ideologies. Your message about love, purpose, etc. is heart warming for me because for me that is what life has always been about. I am a musician and I've been in and out of different jobs, struggling to find work that is both satisfying and has purpose. So I spend a lot of time thinking about this conflict. Thank you!

      How is individualism a bad thing? The welfare of the people is always at the alabi of tyrants?

    • @alexsanders7404
      @alexsanders7404 3 роки тому +2

      @@kingkoi6542 Individualism can be a bad thing if everyone in a society doesn't keep in mind the welfare of others. I think individualism is important for individuals, at the risk of sounding redundant. An individual can meet their full potential in their abilities. But when you start talking about wealth and an economy based on individual ambitions, there's a slippery slope that leaves people who are less abled or less advantaged to benefit. A society based solely on individualism, which America has certainly flirted with and some would say has immersed itself in, is in danger of leaving a lot of people in the dark. So, individualism needs to be paired with other ways of thinking so that it's not just the individual that benefits. Bill Gates, for example, is someone, based on what I've seen, who has risen to the top as an individual but has also allowed his abilities in his ambitions to benefit the greater community and perhaps the entire world around him. The best example of individualism. Wolf of Wall Street is a negative example of that; while people benefited from Belfort's wealth and ambition, he is not a good example of someone who is going to make the world around him a better place for others. With him it was dog eat dog, and that's not a mentality that I subscribe to. It makes for great storytelling and wonderful movies and television shows, but we need to be careful not to become rank individualists, pushing our own self-interests while dismissing the people around us.

    • @alexsanders7404
      @alexsanders7404 3 роки тому

      Also, I would be careful in saying that the welfare of the people is "always" at the alibi of tyrants. There's so much mistrust of leadership right now, and I understand why that is. There are some terrible leaders in the world. In my original comment I think I was talking about my own personal relationship with individualism and not so much as it relates to governing people. But it is an ideology that is soaked within American communities, socially. And it also impacts religion, which influences the way people feel politically. And that needs to have checks and balances on it. Individualism threatens people's ability to look at the other side and understand other people's stories. And tyrants or corrupt leaders benefit from that. So, this is a much more complex conversation than just individualism or not individualism; socialism or no socialism. Thoughts and ideas and ambitions from multiple ideologies and ways of thinking are needed when discussing human beings coexisting in the same larger habitat.

    • @kingkoi6542
      @kingkoi6542 3 роки тому +2

      @@alexsanders7404 I see what you mean. I really recommend you check out Dostoevsky for a better (less greedy) interpretation of individuals. Ultimately man has a sick pleasure with his pain, and people tend to do things despite their best interests. I don't mean to say that a drug addict chooses to become one, but ultimately at the end of the day it's their choice of whether they want to stop or not. It's weird, because there needs to be a balance between the two for a healthy society. Also giving people things doesn't help them, teaching them to become self-sufficient on the other hand does... I think the real problem is education, or a lack there of. And it's extremely healthy to distrust "authority" especially with the crack heads trying to lead countries today.

    The problem with this theory is that it doesn't take into account that we are facing an unprecedented crisis in economics as a whole.There are several economists that have been trying to raise the alarm for several years that modern economic theory is broken and since the entire global economy is based on that theory, we are headed for an unprecedented fall that there will be no recovery from.
    I am 44. The first crash I remember is the 1988 (1989?) crash. I was 13. Our economy never fully recovered from it. Then next crash was the Tech Bubble in 1999. Again, our economy never fully recovered and recovered a little less than after 1988 one. The came the 2008. It wiped out a huge percentage of the middle class. The recovery was the smallest we've ever seen. Then came the Pandemic crash in 2020. We have yet to see how well we recover but if it's a repeat of the previous pattern, there will less recovery then after 2008. For over 30 years, our economy hasn't just been going through a series of crashes, it has been steadily eroding. Getting weaker and weaker with every crash. This is a pattern that cannot continue. Something has to change. And that something is on a much larger scale than individual behaviour. It is the way our economy is structured, and it needs a rethink from the ground up.

The first time was 2008 after I'd spent my 20's working 115 hour weeks and living on a boat without running water or electricity to save as much as possible. Now I'm 40 with my career pulled out from under me AGAIN, $1800 left in my bank account, and who knows how the fuck long this will last because a third of America keeps trying to turn the pandemic into a political issue. So I kinda feel like saying fuck you for saying that I can hopefully just start over once the coronavirus stops being an issue

    Having achieved financial independence, finance experts like Jorden Peterson, Dave Rubin and Jason Stapleton taught greatest lesson, in which money doesn’t buy happiness but it can make things easier.
    America has always been an equal opportunity culture but few do make it to excess wealth. Though there are a lot of reasons, but as observed in WOWS, Jorden Belfort presents a religious type of capitalism; in which stuff and vices fill in any emptiness. People want to get wealthy by any means necessary, assuming that money and expensive things equal success .The problem is few people know how to stay wealthy, so they take a Ferrari and a mansion, and despite draining their sources, feel like that as they appear rich, they’ve made the American dream.
    WOWS mainly showcases that in a melting pot of a nation where many people have different definitions of the pursuit of happiness, Jorden Belfort sold the world on his definition; that even if people get hurt, at least your better then them.
    I’ve felt that the moral of WOWS was that Jorden Belfort learned his money wasn’t what filled him, but his salesmanship knowledge filled him, knowing that people are always drawn to those who can offer a ticket to success.

    First, I would like to say I really enjoy your videos. However, especially in this video as you discuss the problems with desiring wealth you have riddled your video with ads that rip me out of your message. It detracts so substantially from your hard work that I have written this comment when I write maybe a comment every two weeks on something I am passionately for or against. I just ask that you consider what you are doing to your work jarring people out of its substance with three ads during a 12 minute video. Try and give it a watch yourself and see if it does not ruin the experience.

    I think my biggest issue with your thesis is that you only look at this from two extremes. I agree that wealth doesn't equate to happiness, but it's certainly more difficult to be happy when you aren't wealthy. This isn't due to prestige, glamor, or flaunting one's status, but because it is exceedingly difficult to gain enough wealth to afford a decent house, insurance, food, etc. in America's current economic system. People born into poverty and minority populations will always have it harder, while people born into more affluent and privileged families will become "self-made" millionaires. In addition, the idea that we can just build a big emergency fund and "wait for things to blow over" is shockingly naive and reads as hopeless, wishful thinking if you know basically anything about American politics under capitalism.Thousands of Americans are going to be evicted, homeless, and jobless in the coming months, and probably years, while the 1% will hardly be affected at all and will likely put forth no effort to help anyone but themselves, their rich friends, and their associated businesses.

    • @ajiththomas2465
      @ajiththomas2465 4 роки тому +1

      I agree. The reason why Americans can't save that much money in the case of emergencies is because wages haven't gone up since the 1980's and all the expenses of trying to live in society eat away at what meager paychecks the average working class American has. Don't even get me started at our horribly exploitive and abominable private healthcare system. And that's in addition to the rich and wealthy buying politicians to rewrite the laws and rig the game in their favor.

    In america we are born equal meaning equal rights. We are not born making the same amount of money. That is why we are so successful. We can actually receive rewards for our efforts.

    Man, I really disagree with the philosiphy espoused at the end, and you were wrong about several parts of your argument regarding "self-made" millionaires. It's not about saving, it's about making your money work for you. The reason most people don't have money saved is because the only way to get ahead is to fold back over and re-invest in things that appreciate in value.

    Love your content, nice essay, but your advice at the end annoyed me greatly. You call for more personal responsible finance, which suggests that poor people can be blamed for there own though lives.
    How is one to save money living of a minimum wage, high rents, flexibel contracts or no work at all?
    Your advice might be usefull for the privileged to feel better about themselves, not sure how this is helpful for the rest.

      All people, poor or rich, can leaen and practice habits of being resourceful (with money or other things).
      I think you give poorer people too little credit and imply they have too little agency over their lives. There are external forces and internal forces that shape one's situation. If you overemphasize one side, you are veering away from reality. Everyone can do something to better their own situation, even in seemingly small or insignificant ways to others of a higher economic class than they.

    this video started so great but got reeeeaaaal deep into capitalism worship real quick.... how about we have a system in place where huge savings in the bank aren't necessary because human life is valuable and therefore housing, healthcare and food are free for all because everyone has the right to it? The reasons Amaricans need a ton of savings to survive is because capitalism has made surviving nearly impossible for most people in the world.

    • @FalunEllieKoos

      Also poverty has an effect on the way we perceive the world, it creates a tunnel vision that wants to turn cash into materialistic things because they feel less likely to fall out of our graps then money, which just keeps falling out of your hands when you are on the low end of this fucked up system. Making smart, responsible choices isn't as easy as it sounds. This essay is very short sighted. your accent sounds Dutch, so: decorrespondent.nl/511/waarom-arme-mensen-domme-dingen-doen/19645395-f6c9a0bd (why poor people do stupid things)

    hmm what is the point of saving money if some rich idiots at wall street can make it disappear in two seconds? yes, the 20 somethings that have other 40 years to gain their losses back have no issue, but what about the 60 somethings that have lost all their saving in the market and now don't have enough time to get it back? how come those who actually give value to society aren't protected from the shifts of the market? becoming a professional investor in order to survive on top of trying to build a career that is actually fulfilling shouldn't be the answer.
