In this mandalorian video essay I examine the symbolism of the immensely successful Disney+ show The Mandalorian and the star wars Baby Yoda phenomenon. In doing so, I showcase how the story of The Mandalorian maps almost perfectly onto the story of St. Christopher and give my take on how that may help us understand the show's popularity and what baby yoda that can tell us about the state of culture.

I don’t think a lot of people thought “Hey, that sounds a lot like that Saint Christopher bible story. Totally!”
yah you are right because no one heard about saint Christopher bible story xD but you could tell immediately that the story follows an archetypal structure. the story could blend in a lot more ways. he just found an example to argue his point which is a good one.
You can view it in a way, like, the story of Saint Christophe itself is based in something deeper, like certain archetypal underlay in our subconsciousness, which in turn is representation of some recurring theme in reality.
People certainly can enjoy something without realising why they enjoy it, or what it is exactly. I belive nobody after watching the original Star Wars (Ep IV) thought: "Hey, it's Journey of the Hero, refined, but in space vestern samurai setting!". But it still is. Papa George read Campbell, he actually knows something about storytelling.
😂😂😂
I doubt Jon Favreau thought about it either I think it must be purely coincidence.
I WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE BABY
The two most popular tv series of the day are about:
An outlaw / Man of the margin
He has almost no personality, is a near archetype
He rarely speaks and when he speaks he does so laconically
He hunts monsters/criminals for a living
He has a(n honor) code he follows
He accepts responsibility for a child he did not choose but came to him by chance
He is called Mando / Geralt of Rivia
There might be a change going on in the culture.
This channel deserve more recognition. I have spoken.
“A story that managed to be completely uninspired and radically reconstructive [...]”
That was beautifully put.

When they said “This is the way” I immediately said it afterwards.
What a great video.
It really feels like the heroes of the margin with the divine are returning to flip this chaotic and diabolical world.
This is the way.

Huh, the similarities didn't even occur to me damn, well done!
As all great storys, this one wanders in the path of older storys and myths
"R2-Beef2" has to be my favourite fan name for this droid. XD
Calling Jonathan Pageau , calling Jonathan Pageau
Werner Herzog is so pure and he loves baby yoda
I know, I just had to include that clip ahah
It’s so different from classic Star Wars though - the music, the script style, the manner of character development, the pacing.
Great video! Thanks for this light up on the St Christopher's story and this analyse on why the Mandalorian is getting back to the Star Wars source (the heroes journey and the anti-nihilist storytelling).
It remind me the videos from Jordan Peterson but with great video editing :)
Thanks Nicolas! I would recommend you check out the Jonathan Pageau channel if you haven't already. He is a friend of Jordan's and we've made a number of movie interpretations together. - Thomas
@@storytellers1 Thanks Thomas for replying to my comment, I really appreciate that you take time to read them and reply.
I also love the work of Jonathan Pageau, it's good to know that you interpret some movie with him!
We need, in this nihilist generation, meaningful stories that can elevate human being, and sharing those kind of analyse, that you do, is vital to keep inspiring storytellers to no only entertain, but deliver meaningful messages.
Nicolas
Saint Christopher is my official patron saint and I recognized the similarities in The Mandalorian. Awesome video along with your others.
Beautifully done, dude. Extremely well thought out. Keep up the exceptional work!

A storytellers video about my favorite recent series. Really brightened my day
0:50 I feel so bad that these actors spent so much of their lives on this latest trilogy. I hope Rey and Finn's actors get to shine in other films like Poe's actor has.
Like in X-Men Age of Apocalypse???
What a great analysis. Brilliant really. Thank you.
That is an amazing title haha. The video is fantastic too!
Thanks man, appreciate it! - Thomas
Wow! That is an amazing analysis!
Great content as always. This channel def needs more subs.
This is brilliant. Kinda wish I'd picked up on this, having already known the story of St. Christopher, haha.
lovely analysis!
Obsessed with this video and baby yoda
Top notch. Hail Mando! This is the way.
great video!
Great video.
I love your videos man
Thanks Luis!
Nice
Great video as always yadayadayada
Have you ever considered doing an analysis on Nocturnal Animals or "mother!"
Would love to see an analysis of "stay" as well!
inb4 "It's called 'The Child'"
Cool! Well, being from mostly atheistic country it wouldnt even occur to me, that Mandalorian was based on biblical story. Does this knowledge makes the show better? Sure does!
its is not based on the bible its is whats suggested in this video
Nice. :)
The child represents hope.
Did you change the title or something?
Paging Dr. Pageau!
6:43 I don't think the empire destroyed his people, that was the sepratist and their Droid army right??
I would watch this but Disney plus is to expensive right now and I hear lots of problems with Disney plus to, so I’m watching it with reaction videos.
0:48 I think they were wired out by the the interviewer. Not to defend the movies just the actors .
Baby Dropping Bill Burr
Baby Jesus and Joseph....
A ( Marie Sue Character ) will bring any Movie to crash and burn.
Didn’t like that conclusion though.
Juice
Baby Yoda eats soup, and maybe frogs. He's excellent at hide-and-seek. He's as inquisitive as any baby, playing with a metal shift knob from Mando's ship even when told not to. He trends higher on social media than the Democratic presidential candidates.
How did u know this was the story of saint christopher.?
Because I know that story thanks to Jonathan Pageau. But I only really noticed how explicit the pattern was after watching the season finale. - Thomas
Archetypes. The Heroes Journey. That's what Disney's Star Wars lacked. It was non relatable at a deeper level.
Eh one way to look at it lol
People are searching for God without realizing it.
Keep up the good work storytellers! Love your channel!
John Boyega is such a boss. He's been hating on these movies since The Last Jedi.
Er, what about the Mandalorian (and baby Yoda) being called "Foundlings" (like Moses)? Baby Yoda travels in what is practically a Moses basket. The Mandalorian and Baby Yoda are hidden away from an invading force, only to be found and raised by a people who have been dispersed throughout the galaxy and are seeking to re-build their homeland (Like the Jewish diaspora). Finally, Jon Favreau is Jewish and, therefore, much more likely to be making allegories about Moses (a Jew) that St Christoper (a Christian). Just saying.
Certainly the stories are connected in some ways. Although I would caution using the 'allegory'. The important thing is the story's symbolic structure, and what it means, not that it may or may not be an intended allegory for the St. Christopher story (or the Moses story for that matter) on the producers part. Hope that makes sense. - Thomas
I'll make you aware Moses is also featured in the ancient testament, which is part of christian literacy. Moses was found by the daughter of Pharao across the river, who gave him to a hebraic woman to be taken care for before exiling himself into another family, then finally join his people after god gave him purpose.
I'll also had the previous pharao, who was a friend of the hebrew, is reminiscent to the Republic, and the new Pharao is reminiscent to the Empire, as the latter one is persecuting the hebrew.
"Guns are my religion" : P
Well that's unironically part of my religio, Jesus said "if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one." Luke 22:36
>:(
But he didn't loose his family in the clone wars tho
Yeah he did, a super battle droid killed them
I just searched fhfhfhfhfhfhfhfhfh
You could make a religion out of this--*no don't.*
Lol technically you can make a religion out of anything.
InMaTeofDeath I would rather say, you can make a Ethic out of everything
@@christianbustnes9212 I would say both are equally true.
the story of ''St.Christopher ' is so god damn generic that i can super impose it on every 4th film that comes out.
this is not how you add depth to an essay not by drawing generic parallels how many movies or shows have we had where the bad guys turns good and saves his kill out of some morality?
terminator much?
KK will get a bafta for that garbage trilogy. Try telling people that the feminazy propaganda machine is not at work.
Well, I liked Force Awakens & Rise of Skywalker so I guess I’ll unsubscribe.
As for the Mandalorian/Baby Yoda, it clearly comes from the spaghetti western/Clint Eastwood western tradition mixed w/ sci-If.
Not that inspired imo. Firefly did it better.
You're completely allowed to like those movies. Will you not allow me to dislike them?
Storytellers; thanks for the reply. Of course no one can dictate personal taste. We all have the privilege to dislike any art.
What we can also decide on is who we want to watch/listen to.
* I think that Star Wars fandom has severely fractured. The prequels caused some splits but fan edits helped patch that.
But the sequel trilogy is a massive break.
- I used to be subscribed to the HelloGreedo channel. But since he really liked “The Last Jedi” & I rank it as the worst Star Wars film, there was too big a gap in opinion to be comfortable.
- I agree “The Force Awakens” & “Rise of Skywalker” is mostly mediocre original trilogy Star Wars.
But compared to the prequels (Jar Jars, sand & skin) & “Last Jedi” (Luke throwing away his lightsaber, contemplating murdering his nephew while glowering over him, treating Po like a fool about a dumb plan);
* Considering all that; Star Wars which repeats many things from the OT (with several new twists) is by definition something which is recognizable to what OT Star Wars is.
A welcome thing for this very longtime SW fan.
* To sum it up; Sometimes it’s best to agree to disagree & move on.
@@storytellers1 Grogu is Ben Solo, Mando is Han. But you're not ready for that conversation, given your blind hatred of the sequel trilogy.
What vapid horseshit. Just goes to show that people can read whatever they want into practically anything.
