    I have seen you talk about many of these over the year and it was lovely to get a top ten which reminded me of some I must read. Sharing Tomb of Sand was a highlight of my reading year. Despite all that the best thing about this video may be your hat.

    Thank you for such a great list! I can't tell you how many times I picked up/put down Your Driver Is Waiting at the book store this year...now I will need to go back and get it. I'm also looking forward to reading We Meant Well - one of the few Giller prize longlisted books I actually purchased because it sounds so good.     Hi Lindy! I’ve added a bunch of these to my TBR. Your Driver is Waiting is on the agenda for the LGBTQ+ book club I’m facilitating this year. The fact that it’s your number two gives me a thrill of excitement to get to it! I’ve been reflecting on my reading year and a lot of my favorite reads, similar to your experience, were either buddy reads or books I discussed with others in more detail. It really is special when the book takes on a life beyond the pages! Hope you have as good a reading year in 2024! Cheers!

      Such a daunting task to choose a favorite! I have read 555 books as of today (including novellas and short stories; can you tell I am not a tv watcher?!)...but I loved my time with Black Cake, The Housekeeper and the Professor, Caste: The Origins of our Discontent, The Universal Christ, and The Wishing Game. Oh, and When Stars are Scattered was a terrific middle grade graphic novel my kiddo and I truly felt was a valuable read. Happy reading to you, and I look forward to catching up on your videos!

      @@happyfamily1298 Thanks for recommending When Stars Are Scattered. I have it on my TBR but it had slipped my mind. I enjoyed a different graphic novel by Jamieson: Roller Girl.
      Like you, I’m not a tv watcher. That gives me more time for reading. 😊
      We definitely have overlap in our reading tastes: Caste, and Housekeeper and the Professor are examples.

    what a wide-ranging list! I wouldn’t expect anything less. I also put Valley of the Birdtail up there and agree the solutions part of the book is so well done. I’m glad to have Tomb of Sand back in my brain! no Friend But the Mountain…wow. I’m looking that one up!

      Hi Renee! I’m glad to hear that you read Valley of the Birdtail too. I didn’t know if that book had readers outside of Canada.
      No Friend but the Mountains is challenging because Boochani and his fellow refugees are in a situation that’s absolutely heartbreaking. The writing is clear-headed and finely crafted; quite a feat, considering its genesis. And it has given me awareness and understanding I doubt I could have attained from any other book.

      Thanks Shelly. Growing up with mixed heritage is another aspect of Bell’s The Talk that might appeal to you. And I stand behind all of the other books on my list too, of course. 😊

    Hi Lindy! I really enjoyed this top 10. I knew it was going to be a terrific range of books. I also found The Talk quite powerful. I was excited to find that my library has Wolf Suit as well as Your Driver is Waiting. I'm going to do my "best of 2023" very soon.

      @@lindysmagpiereads - One novel I often have come to mind when I think of my favorite novels this last year is An American Tragedy by Theodore Dreiser. The novel is closely based on a well-known news story of the time.

      @@Eldertalk Thanks for this. I haven’t read anything by Dreiser but the novel that comes to mind when his name is mentioned is Sister Carrie. Now I shall have both in the back of my mind as possibilities.

    SO ready for this!!!!!!! Just requested a few of them from the library! I had to get most of them from the state's library system as my local group of libraries didn't have them!
    Do you tend to do more of your reading from the library or from books you own?
    Have the best start to 2024 reading!

      I mostly read library books. I could never afford to support my book habit otherwise. Your best of 2023 has a couple that not only aren’t available through the library, but also not available through special order at the bookstore: Reservoir and Orpheus Builds a Girl. Did you buy those during your trip to England?

    I've just discovered your channel and am really happy about that.
    Such an incredible list! I'm going to check all the recs.
    My most favourite ones were "Kim Jiyoung, born 1982” by Cho Nam-Joo, "So you want to talk about race" by Ijeoma Oluo and "How to survive a Plague" by David France (it sat in my tbr for centuries, feels like it).
    They left an impact and gave food for thoughts.
    Unfortunately, I haven't read books from your top 10, but I added them to my tbr.❤️

    I wanted so much to love Tomb of Sand but i just could not stay engaged. There is beautiful and funny writing and I appreciated what the book did.

      I think I was in exactly the right mood for it. Plus, I found it full of surprising turns, or should I say tangents?, and novelty is something I value in my reading.

    My favourite book of 2023 has actually been two by the same author. I have read Is Mother Dead? and Will and Testamant by Vigdis Hjorth and she became definitely one of my new favourite authors. Meanwhile I have read a third book by her.

    No friend but the Mountain is the only one of yours that I've read. I read it a few years ago. It still makes me furious what he and other have gone through, and in Australia we felt powerless to help, our government certainly wasn't listening to those of us that didn't want mandatory detention for people seeking asylum.

I’m glad that Boochani is no longer imprisoned, but the continued mistreatment of asylum seekers around the world should be making everyone angry.

      @123456knit Simone can’t remember where she got the pattern, and probably created it herself after being inspired by something she saw in a book. The top has a hexagonal star. Try googling fair isle tam knitting pattern and you might find something similar. Good luck!

      Hi Jacqueline! One of these days you are going to convince me to pick up Deluge. I almost put in on request at my local library just now… and then I remembered that it’s nearly 900 pages long. Perhaps I shall need a buddy read to get to that one. I’ve got a big book readalong starting in February (A Suitable Boy) so Deluge will have to wait.
      My Fourth Time, We Drowned made my longer best of 2023 list, the one I’ve linked to on my blog. It’s such a humane and powerful example of what journalism can do.
