- Your Northern Watch Co magazine editor was curious about the movement inside this cheap n cheerful Ali Express fakeroo. It also offers an opportunity to see how easy a battery change might be, or not.
So let's take a look.
This fake might actually be better than the real Swatch. Back opens, can replace the movement and the crystal, you can actually get it and it is cheaper than the Swatch.

Mine had a Sunon PH50 in it. They actually have a very extensive website. It is probably no worse than whatever Swatch is throwing in the real thing.
I got a real one now. There really doesn't seem to be any difference in quality. The fake strap actually feels better.
@@Kewrock My fake is exactly the same as Northern Watch Co one, I have had the Saturn model for around 3 weeks now and have had no problems with it. Friends have commented that it looks good and why spend £250 on a real one (even if you can get one, I can't, even if was prepared to spend that sort of money on a plastic throwaway watch, no Swatch shops within hundreds of miles from me, I live in Estonia) This fake one, you can change the battery anywhere, it even has a glass crystal and not a plastic one like the original, and will probably last as long. Omega + Swatch have messed up the launch of this watch and are still trying to make out it's a Rolex, re supply.

Frustrated with resellers(scalpers) taking advantage of the poor supply of the watch at Swatch dealerships…I bought a couple of these…
And I have no complaints(with the measely sum I paid for them).
Great video! How does one take off the small plastic nibs that keep the movement case on to get at the gears? Could you post a tutorial for removing the 24h gear please?

Yeah you see the Sunon chrono movements in lots of homage watches on Ali Express. Not that bad compared to some super cheap fashion watches.

I received a homage watch with a Sunon PE50 movement. My only real complaint with the movement is trying to set the minute hand exactly at the tick mark on the dial when the small second is hacked at zero. The minute hand jumps all over the place. I got it correct after multiple attempts only to find the minute hand jump about 1/2 minute after running for a few seconds. Extremely frustrating. All the chronograph functions seem to work properly. My 24 hour small hand is aligned properly. I suspect this one can't be adjusted since it's most likely direct geared to the hour hand. The large sweep second and minute chronograph hands can be re-aligned to zero if needed using the crown in position 2 and top/bottom pushers. It has a ghost date function which is hidden by the dial. I can hear it change date in crown position 1 and when I set the time at around 4 o'clock so the date wheel was never set at midnight (but it's hidden). The large sweep hand moves in 1/5 second increments but is a little jumpy, not smooth, even increments. The chronograph measures elapsed time and split times using the bottom pusher. The pushers do not "click" when activating the chronograph. I'm still in the process of testing the accuracy of this movement.

just got one of the more recent fakes delivered.... not bad at all... now I`m waiting for an ETA G15.212 / G15.211 movement to see if I can "upgrade" the stock replica movement :D

I think the ETA one is slightly wider by about 0.5mm and 1mm less in terms of height. The plastic movement holder has to fit perfectly too. The other issue is fitting the dial plate and hands to the ETA, which may have a slightly different canon pinion. Short answer; you never know until you try and make it fit.

You are welcome, always a bit fiddly to align the hand, but usually similar process on most quartz chronographs.

Good point about the replacing the PE50. However, can you replace it with G10.212? Have you attempted to remove the hands on the fake moonswatch?
No I haven’t removed the hands. I’m not doing much watch stuff now, rediscovered my motorcycle obsession!

thanks for the look inside. my chrono minute dial is not setting to zero always and sometimes it does not count the minutes. is that a mechanical or software issue? any fix?
I got the chrono hand to align on this fake Moonswatch at 12 by the standard method of resolving out of sync chrono hands. Pull the crown to first position. Press top pusher which normally starts the chrono hand repeatedly, this should advance the hand by about half a second each press. Then keep pressing until it advances all the way to 12 and push the crown back in. Start the chrono hand, let it run...press it again to stop. Then press lower pusher to reset, hey presto it should go to 12 exactly. Hope that helps.
Will this movement fit into a VK63 omega case as a swap?

I'm embarrassed to say I bought a real one, the Mission to Uranus as I really liked the blue dial and white bezel. It was trash, I sold it to a mate, the top pusher fell off and is gone. He took it to the Swatch Store for warranty, don't know the result yet. At least he only paid me what I paid. This movement in the fake at £7 is actually better than the unrepairable Ronda module in the Moonswatch which is only about $4. Btw, as I really wanted the colour, for less than £100 I got the V4 Pagani version, stainless steel, sapphire crystal, a high quality Seiko VK63 mecaquartz movement, got it a couple of days ago and it's a beauty. Definitely recommended over the plastic garbage real or fake. As for the Omega Mission to "Uranus", that's exactly where they stick their watch. 😁 Thanks for the video. Very informative. Superb video, thank you for sharing, I've bought 2 versions, 4 that have a more 'stone' feel to the face, but the straps are pretty poor, then I have the plastic face version with a strap that looks very good.

Probably be OK for 2 mins in a swimming pool and then water would seep in via the crown n stem.
You can change the Sunon PE703 movement with a Seiko VK63, now you have a great watch.

Yes, you could swap dials, hands, straps etc between all the fakeroo models, or add your own hands, crystal, strap to an existing Ali Express Moonswatch. Loads of stuff out there from MOD parts companies once you've done the measurements with a micrometer ;-)

Do you think one could you swap the movement on this with a VK64?
The vk64 is slightly wider plus not quite as high. The hands are also slightly different fitment. Probably not but it could be possible if you used a different movement holder or customised an existing one. Lots of work for little gain imho.

@@Bradkatz123 yeah just the usual start/stop with the top button and lower button to reset. TBH I have never let the watch run on the chrono button for a day or so to note what the sub-dials do, or how accurate they are. Kinda lazy but there are always 100 other jobs to do somehow, or riding the motorbike ;-)

I wonder if that movement can actually be swapped for a Miyota or Epson/Hattori, lots of Chinese movements are straight copies of Japanese ones. Do you know the reference number of that movement?
It's likely another chrono movement would fit, although the cannon pinion might be slightly different in diameter or height from the Sunon PE703, which would mean changing the hands too - possibly the crystal. Hattori V537 appears to have same date calendar numeral sizes, similar width. Cheers for the comment.

Hi. I noticed your 24 hour subdial (printed as 1/10 counter) is not properly aligned with the large hour hand. Your watch is set to 12:45 but the small subdial hand on the 24 hour counter is at around 6. Does the small hand rotate as you set the time and maybe the hand is just misaligned from the factory?
Yeah I messed with the watch chrono buttons and crown for five mins but the sub-counters just go their own way, couldn't reset them. Inevitable budget cutting to get the RRP down I reckon.

Norm we feel your pain at Swatch prices. That said we can't condone fakery. Maybe Nancy Pelosi will sort out all that Chinese replica stuff with a few stern words? Who knows..

Have seen PE90's in there as well, think it depends on who is producing it as it seems more than one Chinese factory at work esp as demand is super high still. Sunong move numbers of movements that even Seiko and Miyota would drool at the huge amounts sold, the old adage of stack it high, sell it cheap comes to mind here lol

Yes. It is just 'slaved' to the main hour hand, only it rotates at half speed:). You can't set it or stop it from turning. It's the biggest giveaway of them all IMO. They copied the dial layout of the original, where it indicates 1/10th of chrono seconds.

@@thenorthernwatchcomagazine6486 Mine looks very much like the original. It has Omega + Swatch on the dial with Speedmaster and Moonswatch either side of the hands. I have the Saturn version and the strap has Omega with logo printed on the short end and Speedmaster, Moonswatch, and mission to Saturn printed on the long end. The crystal is glass and not plastic like the original. I have had it for three weeks or so, I have looked on AliExpress and they are not available exactly the same now. So far it has been very accurate, we will see what happens when I have to change the battery. Only bought it too see what I would get and really quite pleased.

You can buy a Sunon movement on ebay for about £7-£10.

Better dan the real one, the movement is better and you can replace if it wroke and que open case is better and only for 60 dollars. Good deal.
I think it says a lot about the actual quality of the moonswatch that it was faked so fast and that in the comments you see people debating if the fakes are actually better watches or not. overall for the money and hassle of buying a moonswatch there are many watches available within the £207 watch price point that will outlast and serve much better.

For me it’s a different company copying the design of an expensive high quality timepiece, making it out of cheaper materials, with lower labour cost, without the attention to detail & selling it at an affordable price. I’m not a watch snob, I love lots of brands from Seiko to Rolex & I understand why Swatch have done this…….but I’d buy a Bulova Lunar Pilot everyday over a moonswatch.
got to say this is better than the real thing, a fraction of the cost [ probably more realistic cost for a plastic watch ] the movement can be removed unlike the real swatch where the movement is an integral part of the case, if it fails it goes straight in the bin
I have one and the two subdials needle are completely missaligned 😀😀😀 they are useless and accuracy is + 1sec/day
Yep I spent 10 mins messing with the sub dials and they just do their own thing, just dial decoration basically.
once you take it apart it can no longer be near water.
It's exactly as water resistant as it was when new, which is not very. No fashion watch is designed to be water resistant for long, they generally have no seals in the crown/stem or pushers - that's where water gets in, not the caseback. Actually I might destroy the watch later this year by taking a few showers, or just chucking it in a bowl of water, see how long it lasts.
It's absolute crap you're paying for. It's a shame.

@@chantsztung9197 That depends on the bph (beats per hour) of the movement. Many Japan and Chinese movements typically use 21,600 bph which translates to 6 ticks per second. Most Swiss movements use 28,800 bph which is 8 ticks per second. Of course there are higher bph movements along with hybrid movements like Seiko Spring Drive that have a smooth sweep second hand.
Open the swatch, its not much better "if any"
I imagine it's the Ronda quartz seen in Chris Ward, Luminox, Tissot etc - too low budget to buy a Moonswatch and crack open the case though!

@@thenorthernwatchcomagazine6486 The real one has the cheapest quartz chrono ETA inside. It has ticking, not running, chrono seconds and four actual jewels. For timekeeping, the Chinese is about on par with it. Treat them both the same, and the ETA will last longer.
