It's a long story but about 24 years ago Dick Dale spent an hour teaching me how to play Miserlou on guitar and surf guitar in general. It was a lesson I will never forget.
@@skeletonkey6 It was pretty awesome. I did feel like an idiot though because I didn't actually realize it was him until he walked me into his dressing room and people were asking him pre-show questions. Below is the full story about how this happened if you're interested. This all came about because I didn't have enough money for a ticket. I waited outside the venue by the box office. I saw "this guy" step out of this old RV in front of the theatre and began heading to the side door of the theatre. I asked him if he happened to have any extra guest list spots so I could see the show. I told him I was a big fan of Dick Dale and really wanted to see him perform. He told me he would walk me in and he walked me straight into his dressing room to hang out. As soon as I realized "this guy" was Dick Dale I turned bright red and was so embarrassed. I started asking him questions about how to play surf guitar and that's when he grabbed two guitars and handed me one and began giving me lessons. After the show I told him he just made my day and I was so incredibly grateful for being so generous with his time and so kind to me. He never once made me feel bad that I didn't know what he looked like. In my defense the internet wasn't a thing yet really and the only photo I had was one of him from the 60's. I wasn't expecting that this man with longer white hair pulled back was actually him.
I saw DD in a small club on his 60th birthday. Clad in leather, turquoise, feathers and a t-shirt that read, "Well Strung." He played the trumpet during the solo. Shit you not, I have seen lots of shows, and other than MBV and Dino Jr. Dick Dale was the loudest damn show I have been to.
I have seen several tutorials on this instrumental But yours is the best by far. Especially when you do so in such a calm perfect english teacher way Thank you.
You are a 1st class guitar tutor! Thanks so much for your commitment to helping others. You need to be rewarded financially by those who benefit from your dedication. People take note!
This is a great lesson. Everything about it is top notch. The playing, the pace of the lesson, the sound of your guitar, etc. dude I believe this to be the best guitar lesson I’ve ever had on UA-cam. Not that it matters to many. But just sayin. Thanks
Great lesson, Adrian! Dick Dale was a lefty, played a left handed strat, but with the low E string as the first string, and the high E string as the sixth string. Weird, but...obviously, not for him. His music was blasting over the airwaves while I was in the Navy back in the early to mid '60's. Brings back oh so many great memories! Cheers, mate! :)
Спасибо большое! Я не знаю английский :( Но!!!!!!! Ваш урок сильно мне помог! Помог понять ритмику соло!!!! Поэтому и решил написать комментарий. Вам удачи! Спасибо за нужный всем контент! :)))
DD played the trumpet solo himself. He was quite an excellent trumpeter. Saw him at Brooklyn Bowl right before he passed, and he played a mini-set on trumpet!!
Thank you for the lessons! I have got some learning to do, spellbound and this one.. both more difficult than I thought xD Really nice how the accents are in the tremolo picking. Quite amazing subtle effect.
Been following you for several years and I continue to be impressed with your knowledge and skill regarding music. you may be the king of trivia relating to guitar players from way back when. Would love to see your version of Black Cloud by Trapeze. Thanks!
Parts 1 & 2, both excellent thank you Adrian. Really appreciate all the hard work you put into this. Just a thought and quick question please: seeing the board there next to you in this vid, did you use keyboard to transcribe this from the tune before putting onto the guitar?
Are you saying "I don't give a damn about any trumpet-playing band?" (just kidding, thanks for this breakdown. I've always wanted to know how this tune works.)
I built a Fender 6G15 stand alone reverb unit, it sounds great and you can get all the "surf drip" you want...now getting back to "Miserlou".....................................................
I think he is older than he looks. I did the math once from what he says on his website for what age he started playing guitar and how long he's been playing. I don't remember exactly now, but he's early to mid 40's I think.

Great lesson series, Adrian 👍 Didn’t know that Miserlou was derived from a Middle Eastern folk tune. 🤔
awesome lesson!
Brilliant
Awesome man! Glad I subbed. Gonna learn this part this morning (:

Super helpful.
What Effect/Tone do you use for the Trumpet Solo?
Haughtiness Nice Sound Guitare Good
007 from Russia with love"the gypsy camp scene" same scale used! Thanks for lesson really enjoyed!
I saw the late Dick Dale live and he seemed angry and explained how he used very thick stings, “ I don’t use pussy strings” he said….lol
Quality 😎🎸✅🏝
When utilizing the Surfy Bear is the Fender reverb turned off and what settings do you have the Deluxe set to?
Could you please do a lesson on It's no game (part 1) by David Bowie?
👌👍🤙
Are you saying "I don't give a damn about any trumpet-playing band?" (just kidding, thanks for this breakdown. I've always wanted to know how this tune works.)
I heard that in the studio, they used a combo of reverb and echo to create what was called "The Drip."
I built a Fender 6G15 stand alone reverb unit, it sounds great and you can get all the "surf drip" you want...now getting back to "Miserlou".....................................................

Man you play are seem to be a very sympathetic person
That is really cool. How old are you? U seem really young and still talk about 90-s like you 50 xD

Age is just a number.
Scott Taylor and also indicative of the year you were born
