- Kicking off 2020 with a look at a complete classic - Dick Dale's Miserlou. I'm splitting this into 2 parts. In part 1, I discuss the 'Miserlou scale' and we learn the main riff. In part 2, I talk about the trumpet solo, we learn the other riffs, and I give you my surf tone tips.

This young guy can PLAY GUITAR, plus he's a darn good teacher as well.
The two aren't found together often enough.
young?
@@kolex3713 this persons probably much older, someone in their 30s seems like a baby to someone in their 60-70s :)
I have learned quite a lot from Adrian.
Adrian, you made it sound exactly like the recording!
What is amazing is how Adrian nails the tone of so many different types of music. Congratulations Adrian !!!
Surf sound is really hard to get right without specialized gear! I’ve been a metal/rock player for my whole life, the last 2-3 years I’ve been learning surf guitar, and it’s been a long journey. The techniques are completely different and the amp, tremolo, and reverb are key! But it’s renewed my passion for guitar playing! I encourage people to go out of their typical genres. Especially if they’re feeling uninspired!
If my memory is correct, although he was born in America, Dick Dale has a Lebanese background & the song was usually played an an Oud, which is an instrument with eleven strings. He heard Miserlou being played on one through a Lebanese connection, liked it & adapted it for guitar. The original version was popular with belly dancers. His version is popular with everyone :)
This is most accurate cover, the best picking and the best sound I've heard among millions covers of this song!
Great work!
This is how all guitar lessons should start. Play the piece entirely so we can determine if we like it or not. Awesome job!
Dick Dale: King of the Surf Guitar. There are still some old folks around these parts that remember him playing at the Balboa Ballroom. He is a local hero here.
The one vid I saw with him in it he seemed kinda like a dick lol
Yes!good memories.... then it was Dick Dale and the Del Tones I think?
@@garycutbirth3146 Yes, The Deltones.
IS THIS IN FLORIDA??
@@sooparticular No. It was here in So Cal. No longer stands. ☹
Brilliant! Thanks for doing this! About the scale: this is the exact scale that all of Indian classical music relies on. I'm from the south of India, where we refer to this as the Carnatic scale. I've been listening to Miserlou for years, and I never put two and two together, somehow -- thank you for breaking it down so well! This has been a revelation.
It's called mayamalavagowla in Carnatic Classical and bairav thaat in Hindustani Classical.
No need to be humble. You crushed it.
the scale in miserlou is called Hitzazkiar in greek rembetiko music , other scales from rembetiko could be possibly used to write surf songs (rast, niavent, etc)
Double harmonic minor I think?
Light years ahead of other lessons, no disrespect to them but your attention to detail is incredible.
I’ve been lucky enough to see Dick Dale live 10-12 times. You sound great Adrian. Thanks for the lesson.
I’ve seen the king twice and it was amazing both times. Dude played slide with a drumstick and the trumpet
An absolute ferocious player and one hell of a nice guy.
Rip
That Defo has the wow factor. I'd never heard of this track until I saw a Paul David's video. Fantastic playing and great backing. Great.
Amazing job. Dick Dale would be proud.... of himself for creating this song in ‘62. He never seemed to be Mr. Humble.
That said, you absolutely nailed it. Great job and I can’t wait for part two.
This is the best I’ve heard it played aside from the original, you should record and release this !
Def agree
I’ve played this song on stage with Dick Dale. I was one of The Centurions’ sax players. Great job on the song and the explanation on how to play it. I just need to pass on one thing. It’s not “Tremolo Picking”. It’s “Double Picking”. At least that’s what all the “first wave surf bands” called. Just an FYI. Keep it up. You’re on it!
Wow, amazing you got to play with the man himself! Thanks for the kind words about the video. Yes, you don't seem to hear the term 'double picking' so much these days, but where this kind of music is concerned it's probably the more authentic term!
On a scale of 1-10, I rate this a 50! Maniacal attention to detail makes for compelling content. Bravo!
Hey Adrian. Nicely done. I learned the tune when it first came out a lifetime ago. I've since forgotten it but it might be nice to relearn it. It was one of the songs that made me want to play guitar. Along with the songs of Duane Eddy, the Ventures, Chuck Berry, Santo and Johnny and some others. Thanks
Just one word: AWESOME!
Amazing, thank you can't wait to see part 2
This is absoutley brillaint, you played it perfectly in my eyes
this is fantastic. It's the most accurate lesson for miserlou. Nobody on youtube did the phrasing right until this video
Nailed it, man. The sound and the playing. Kudos.
Love the channel. Amazing player
Nice job 👍🏻 Not only the riffs but the tone is spot-on!
Such a great Jam. Always better to watch someone play it than just hear it. Great way to start the decade! Cheers.
What a way to start the new years! I love surf guitar!
Wow! What a fantastic rendition. Love the backing track too 👌
What a great play along with! Great practice!
Omg Adrian this is extraordinary! Thank you so much and Happy New Year to you and yours 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🥳
I enjoy watching you play as much as the lesson!
Love your vids, tones, gear, playing, & open approach, Adrian
Another fabulous lesson, Adrian. Cheers
Brilliant Adrian. Extremely well played and taught. Respect.
This one certainly builds stamina. Great lesson sir.
Sounds amazing! Thanks for the lesson ❤
Well played Adrian. I admire your playing technique and your fantastic sense of rythm. Thank you for reviving Surf music. Fabulous stuff.
Outstanding, Adrian! And as a beginner, I'm really appreciating the detail you give in your teaching.
Hi, there, Adrian! Cheers for this great lesson! The New Year starts very well! Happy New Year!
Awesome I can't wait to learn this!
WOW! This is bloody awesome!
Great to have the technical details and clear explanation of how to play.
Many thanks
The BEST I've seen it played!
That was special! Well done and thanks for sharing it 🌌☘️🌠
Outstanding as always, awesome playing, great lesson...time to start practicing!! Thanks Adrian, you rock!!
A great song to start off the year! (And a great surprise since I forgot that you were back this week.)
Best of playing I’ve ever seen of this, I’ve never seen even Dick Dale replicate this version as accurately as you have. I’d love to see you play the version he plays on Jools Holland.
Adrian - I watch all your vids. You do a great job of teaching! I hack at surf songs, but have been putting this one off. Now I'm excited to give it a go!
Adrian, thank you, for your lessons, your an awesome teacher and player!
Amazing play and lesson. You nailed it thank you.
Thanks Adrian. A superb lesson on an excellent guitar piece. The explanation about the scale and history meant nothing was left out. Very grateful for your amazing work. (Melbourne, Australia)
Your sound quality is awesome, it actually sounds like the original...well done.
Great lesson! There's a lot of lesson on youtube on this song but this is by far the most complete. I hope one day I can play this
Once, again. Perfect!
Great need part 2.😊
Nailed it...thanks for the first part of the lesson...much appreciated! :)
Excellent!!!! Well done.
FANTASTIC! You are really inspiring me to do it (play guitar) right. Thanks.
Imagine that one of your favorite three songs of all time is incredibly obscure. Would you wish you could keep it to (nearly) yourself, or would you prefer it eventually receives lots of exposure? I felt like I nearly had a heart attack when I heard it in 1994 on a TV ad for Pulp Fiction, since I'd never heard it on radio or TV. I knew it because my mother worked for a radio station in 1962 that gave her its rejected 45s. When I was a teen in 1982, I played her records and found it. I had it autographed by Dick Dale and hung it on my living room wall before that commercial. For years I played it only for special female guests.
hahaaa, thats a great story! got any other good finds from that mini-vault?
@@steelancer4148 Mostly crappola from 1962-63, but one day I may take another look through them. No pre-US fame Beatles 45s (bummer)...there is a Bruce Johnston one worth a bit and a Donna Lynn record I really like that is worth around $0.00.
Awesome playing this massive song.
Your playing this song was flawless.
Thank you for sharing! You do a great job teaching....keep up the good work!
Ah, a classic !! Lovely!!!
Amazing lesson. You are an excellent teacher !
Happy New Year Adrian!
sweet ...totally nailed those tones n vibe!!
Brilliant. I think you nailed it.
God only knows how long the right hand's going to take!
Excellent lesson Adrian 😎🎸✅🏝
Can you do some Khruangbin? Think you could break down his style really well...
yeah id love to see kruangbin too, they are great. maria tambien has been done already.
the guitar on those ones are really hard though, it would take a long time
Excelent tutorial, thank you!
Yep! A great player and teacher!
Thanks Adrian & happy New Year
Regards from São Paulo !

@dark days Not to sharp anymore at 70yr
Just discovered you! I'm subscribing! Exxxcellent work mate!
Thanks Adrian. You a real one.
great work mate
Damn it. Right after I blocked the trem on my Jaguar! Now I have to take the stack of washers off and find the trem spring again.
Excellent choice of tune and excellent video, as always. Happy new year, Adrian.
More Rock and Roll vibe in 2.20 sec. than most. Right up there with the Rumble thanks great sound.
WOW - Superb.
Hi my friend !! GREAT channel , nice taste in music and serious guitar skills !! Thank you for all the effort !! The first known recording of Misirlou is from 1927 Greek artist Tetos Dimitriadis , and the scale is Byzantine . Composer unknown . Ancient stuff , that reverberates through time .
The one that says B M F'er on it! Awesome thanks Adrian.
Thank you! It’s so RAD!!
Damnit. I was 2/3 the way through “Have a Merry Little Christmas”
(granted I was unlikely to finish it now the last Cadbury Roses are gone).
Now I’m torn. I’ve wanted to have a proper crack at this for years.
snap. drat.
Great Backing Track!
I’ve been missing that first F. Thanks, fills the start.
a good accurate rendition!!
Might have to put my trem arm back in the ole Strat for this one. Good vid man.
nicely done Sir
Great !!! Happy New Year from Southamerica, Chile ;)
Brilliant thank you!!
Amazing!!!!
Wicked awesome.
Great job done imo 👍
This is incredible!! Better than the other covers of this song! Is there any way you could put the cover of this song in a separate video ??
Thank you.! I could never figure out that lil chromatic run. (didn’t know it was chromatic. It’s perfect). Right before it goes back into main intro riff
