My family is from Kalymnos. Every year since the 70's we have come for vacation to the Island. Some things have changed and others have not changed. The "volcano" is one of the things that hasn't changed, decade after decade. I am 41 years today and my earliest childhood memories include those of the burning trash, the "volcano", on the road to the Vathy valley.
I have never seen the Greek islands before.......that looks like absolute paradise. No wonder all the greatest minds in the old world came from that area. The scenery looks like it could stimulate the mind like no other.
Do a Documentary on how we here in Sweden handle garbage, we also burn trash but in a controlled way and for heating and energy, we even import from Norway. It is not a solution without some problems with it but this is just ridiculous. But its good to see that the younger generation learns the importance of recycling. Less then 1-2% ends up in landfills here now i believe.
+Magnus Bekkengen Your story goes: Functioning government handles its most basic task at above Average efficiency. Worth noting, but not exactly astounding. Theirs reads: Government teetering so close to collapse it can't facilitate even a basic form of sanitation. You can clearly see the implications behind their trash are probably a little more far reaching.
+Magnus Bekkengen What you do in Sweden is cool and all, and pretty much something similar happens on the Greek mainland (although in a much lower scale). However, Greece and Sweden don't face the same problems economically or frankly geographically. Managing a garbage system across 300 islands scattered across 7 archipelagos would be challenge enough. Being bankrupt while you're doing it, makes it pretty much imposible. So even though I think it is abominable in every way, unfortunately, as a Greek citizen and taxpayer, I can't see how it could be fixed by the cental goverment in the short term... Maybe the regional goverment will take action though.
Yes I know it is under different circumstances. But Sweden had to once take that first step towards what we got now. And some good news and examples of functioning system is just as important then the bad news. Greece is far from the only country with similar problems. And as you se in the video the kids garbage went to a functional port. And ideas and technology trickles down for the growing generation.
Why don't the Greeks talk to Sweden about how they get rid of their rubbish and other countries in their area. The Swedes converts trash to electricity? Swedes could reach out as well. Communication is always key for action.
this is the proper european thing and it's mandatory EU standart but greece does not keep up with this and they deposit in open illegal dumps and they burn waste there and it has high risks of wildfires and major health problems 0 sustainability while sweden is one of the most sustainable countries in the world
I was in Crete this summer. Near Chania we were in the nature, like for a walk and all of the sudden: Landfill of trash. It's not just on the land either. After you get out of the sea in some places, you'll find small pieces of plastic stuck to your body. It's really gross. This is mainly near cities.
+NannaLaurie Kind of like the Pacific Gyre of Trash from our "Throw it away" lifestyles. It's sad. Seems the sun is setting on hope for a "normal" tomorrow.
+Saffire Sanchez Yes, this is the political correct term for gypsies. The 'what can we do' attitude is the norm in Greece, this is what the state officials always say to the people. They are too corrupted to do anything!

+VICE Hey Vice quick question, not on this video. Why is your Vice Daily's and DeJur aren't working. I get a notification for them and as soon as I go to check them out, there's an error saying they are unavailable.
There are 39 active illegal landfills across Greece, 21 of which are on the Greek islands. Some of them-like the dump on the island of Kalymnos-are on fire. Why can't anyone do anything about it? *WATCH NEXT*: _Cocaine: Narcos, Sicarios, and Peru (Part 1)_ - bit.ly/1LXBecY
+VICE This is nothing new... Greece has been like this for along time. Trash and litter all over the streets, in the ocean, diesel pollution. And its not going to change.
I love seeing communities getting behind recycling. That guy putting in the hard yards to recycle and make some coin... And the schools, it's a great thing to teach the youth.
This is one example of how ridiculous government bodies can act and why so much money is wasted. Greece is a country with high unemployment and struggling economically which is used as an excuse these problems when in fact it is a perfect environment to act. The mayor here is talking about how recycling is difficult because of bureaucracy and building a legal landfill can cost hundreds of thousands of euros. The mayors job is to work WITH the community to overcome these problems not to decide he needs a huge facility and cash to build it and complain that its impossible. The solution is start small and employ people at a low wage to do as much of the work as possible this will allow you to have a working recycling center and help people find employment and therefore spend their wages. With a little earthworks and some bins or trucks that can move material onto boats the community could sell bulk materials and recoup some of the costs. I'm not blaming the mayor but the system we find ourselves in when life gets hard and we tend to blame it on something/someone else, I live in Australia and we have it good in comparison to Greece economically but the same attitudes exist. We build nice big recycling facilities surround it with bureaucracy, charge everyone to use it and then continue to increase rates and taxes because our government spends so much.
Maybe companies producing food/electronics can cut down a bit on the plastic waste? For example, A Razor gaming mouse do not need a big, transparent, display cube to show of the product. Just silly things like that adds to the mountain of garbage even more.
I don't think they've been censored. I think whoever the fuck over there in charge of Vice's UA-cam channel started fucking around with videos that weren't ready for upload or something. Most likely an auto schedule uploader. And they privatized/deleted the shit.
So here in 2020 is their anything being done about it is it being cleaned up or has it been cleaned up and where is it gonna go when it is cleaned up just another landfill cause that shit ain't gonna solve anything
Who are the "Roma" the deputy mayor is referring to when asked about who starts the fires? Are those Italians or is that an ethnic slur? Honest question.

Everyone is concerned about the smoke. Little do they know that that is the temporary problem. Metals such as lead, arsenic and the rest of the CAM-17 are not carried away by burning them. They stay behind and become concentrated to levels that are extremely harmful. On an island surrounded by salt water you are not concerned with your groundwater supplies but what about the fish that is locally caught? What about the dust that is picked up by the wind. Dioxins are bad but even after the site gets shut down you still have the metals. And the cleanup is always more expensive than proper waste disposal.
I went walking in Telendos and found a big dump between the harbour and the church. Tons of glass and cans. I had to go around the dump that was big and old. Yeah they have problems with their garbage.

I see comments of people here talking shit about Greece as if they have even an idea of what is going on there beyond of what they see on the media.....
These islands were designed 500 years ago when there was no "trash". The people dont produce enough To pay for municipal services and rely almost entirely on tourism for income which makes the trash situation worse. Why doesn't the tourism industry raise prices enough to pay into a fund for recycling/relocating the trash.
i have always thought of Greece as the mother of Europe, a strong country with strong leaders and good values. if it wasn't for the immigration crises, every European country would have helped you. Bad timing.

-.-' an incinerator with a few HEPA filters on the stacks would work much more effectively to burn the garbage.... just saying seems like the burning ain't stopping any time soon soo might as well just toss a method of burning it better and with less pollution out there...
The government should have invested an efficient/ effective infrastructure to get rid of this garbage long before. Not to mention Greece's financial crisis, its even more difficult for changes on these beautiful islands. Hope they use the amount of money paid for fines for something more useful.
It's crazy to think that all these islands together can't afford $800,000 even with the help of a central government to build a transfer station. That's rapper money these days lol like seriously if 1 person gifted a million USD to Kalymnos it could go so far
When you burn rubbish like this, you don't just produce carbon dioxide and small particle pollution(ash). Rubbish contains tons of N, P and S containing compounds that produce oxides that react with water to produce acids. So, please, build a furnace to filter the smoke. It can be done cheap too. Hell, build the furnace out of trash itself. Find someone local who can weld.
I take it these people don't recycle. Plastic and glass bottles mixed in. I guess it would be hard to collect bottles from every island. Maybe have a spot on the island to sort it and then collect it once a year. Man Greece is going down the shitter fast.
Greece should start a recycling program that pays people per bottle and can they return. That would at least eliminate some of the toxic materials burning.
They are all like, 'oh no, we have this huge problem with trash' - and try to find ways to reduce the trash without looking at the cause of the problem itself, the way in which we consume and throw away.
food->give to animals plastic-> recycle papper-> recycle glass->recycle problem solved i cant imagine any other kind of rubbish people should take action not goverments
people don't understand that Greece already has fuck all money and wont be able to pay anyone back anytime soon never mind recycling and coming up with some kind of complicated way to properly handle the rubbish being produced by the islands and transport them to places where they can be recycled or put places where you can recycle them on the islands but what about all the shit you cant recycle? so unfortunately they do it this way
Smoke in an environmental trespass on the private property of the other inhabitants of the island. A court should file an injunction to lock down the area and force whoever owns the land to bear the burden of cleanup immediately. Where are the police? If the police don't act, then hire mercenaries. This is real crime.
it's an enviromental crime and the police unfortunately does not pay a 💩 but thankfully we get fined 10M € BY EU every year but still we don't become humans
This is shameful. Especially the racist part about the Roma. Get it together, Kalymnos. Your beauty is your bacon and if you ruin the island, no one will come.
I need to research the fine details but the recycling directive in Iowa is a complete money making scheme from beginning to end. Basically it is: Charge citizens for pick up. Then once at the recycle facility charge companies to buy recycle-able material, then companies that re-introduce material with newly manufactured material can label their items as "made with ??% recycled material" which costs money to do which is all passed back to the consumer and then the cycle starts all over again. The recycle pick-up company makes money picking up, then reselling while gaining BRAGGING rights how they help the environment. They should be able to get a system like that for Kalymnos. If they could afford to recycle COSTS, then they could fund to have any "non-recycle-ables removed from the island as well. I know I am missing lots of fine detail involving laws/ permits/ etc... Yet I can't believe some Billion dollar outfit just aching to make even more money couldn't get involved. C'mon, there are politicians living there. Those greedy bastards surely are smart enough to figure it out!

this shits crazy i wanna be able to travel around and journal all this that would be exciting
11:05 Yes it's a problem. The Gentleman with the cane is 34 yrs old
+Bud Trollman ....
They are all like, 'oh no, we have this huge problem with trash' - and try to find ways to reduce the trash without looking at the cause of the problem itself, the way in which we consume and throw away.
typo 5:04
"There are 39 active illegal landfills across Greece, 21 of which are on the Greek islands." Have you the list of these 39 illegal landfills, please ?
What if we remove the volcano?
recycle?
0
food->give to animals
plastic-> recycle
papper-> recycle
glass->recycle
problem solved
i cant imagine any other kind of rubbish
people should take action not goverments
+kala eimai +aluminium which is also recyclable with profit
people don't understand that Greece already has fuck all money and wont be able to pay anyone back anytime soon never mind recycling and coming up with some kind of complicated way to properly handle the rubbish being produced by the islands and transport them to places where they can be recycled or put places where you can recycle them on the islands but what about all the shit you cant recycle? so unfortunately they do it this way
Smoke in an environmental trespass on the private property of the other inhabitants of the island. A court should file an injunction to lock down the area and force whoever owns the land to bear the burden of cleanup immediately. Where are the police? If the police don't act, then hire mercenaries. This is real crime.
RonPaul Revered in an ideal world buddy but it seems that this is far from it😞
it's an enviromental crime and the police unfortunately does not pay a 💩 but thankfully we get fined 10M € BY EU every year but still we don't become humans
This is shameful. Especially the racist part about the Roma. Get it together, Kalymnos. Your beauty is your bacon and if you ruin the island, no one will come.
Errrr, where is the volcano that they burn trash in?
If it weren't for the air toxicity this would be PERFECT.
No it wouldn't
yikes
13:18 that mayor is such a worthless human being. I hope the locals can get a better one soon.
μπραβο vice
Dayum you could use volcanic heat to soften plastic into brick molds
More like these, please!
Those greedy bastards surely are smart enough to figure it out!
note: if you came here to see a video of a volcano being used as a landfill you will be disappointed
Whats the point of giving them billions in bailout funds just to fine them 10 billion?
I came here to see a volcano made of trash, spewing lava all over a town, not some trash heap on fire...
