Very little focus was put towards the supposed topic "Taking Down Tokyo's Corrupt Diamond Syndicate". There was one part in which Kyoji mentioned that he does not want to deal with other Japanese dealers. Aside from that, most of the focus was on outsourcing higher quality diamonds than available in the Japanese market etc. I'm not disappointed, just felt like pointing this out.
Do people really not realize that he’s trying to take down the corrupt markets by being legit and not some shady business trying to provide to a select few and possibly not even truly valued products by taking the spotlight away from them almost completely...?
yes people we get it, diamonds are just old shiny rocks with no intrinsic value....just like paper money, stock certificates, yellow metal and the like, but people still attribute value to it like an new phone or whatever. The point is it's a HUGELY protected closed industry. This guy is making a break into it and coming out a baller
+jctai100 Economics 101: value is often, if not exclusively, derived from an object's scarcity. This person has discovered he can cut out the middlemen and acquire the goods wholesale. The only surprising thing in this whole video and the only reason he can make lots of cash is that Japan's diamond market is strangely behind the times for such a well developed nation in almost every other commercial endeavour.
Human beings are weird like that. For example, baseball cards or Magic the gathering cards. Some cards are still worth hundreds to thousands of bucks. Why? Because humans assigned value to them. Water however, are deemed to worth cents to a gallon despite we could die not having them. Values are arbitrary.
+jctai100 It has intrinsic value, for being extremely hard (useful in cutting tools), reflecting light a certain way (useful in lasers) and for being rare on Earth compared to other minerals. GOLD, rubies, emeralds etc. on the other hand has no intrinsic value.
+Baleur Gold is highly conducted and is exceptionally corrosion resistant. Rubies are used in watches for their exceptional scratch resistance, but I would rank them well below diamonds, gold in usefulness. Note on diamonds: artificial diamonds can replace real diamonds in utilitarian applications.
He's is perfect for international business. Hrs so likeable. Seriously how could you not like him? He knows when to joke about and when it comes down to business he gets it done.
+Tí mó tàihòu shū. They make steel blades to cut everything using diamonds. They are useful to some industrial appliances, but yeah their value is a fraction of what they now cost.
Title of story is egregious. This has next to nothing to do with corruption in Tokyo's diamond market. This was a story about a Japanese man who is trying to get in to a very closed syndicate and to cut out the middlemen in the Japanese market.
Diamonds are essentially WORTHLESS! Their as common as sea shells. If any body bothered to do 5 minutes worth of research they would discover 80% of their value stems from DeBeers monopoly on them and strict market access. When the SHTF & you need liquidity dont expect to get much for that 5k+ diamond! Hell you'll prob be better off simply prying off the diamond & selling the gold/platinum band.
+Sam Fitzpatrick Here's an old article. It's quite long, but really informative. www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/1982/02/have-you-ever-tried-to-sell-a-diamond/304575/
He took his opportunity and killed it. 2 years later and he must be one of the bigger players on the far east Asia diamond market. Big cred for this man.
What a really chill cool guy. Not often will you come by such an awesome business man, especially in such a notoriously greedy and greasy business community. Props to him.

Diamonds are super overrated. 1. It's expensive because of how de Beers marketed diamonds as the symbol of love, and how the single player in the diamond industry is able to control the diamond prices since there's noany competition. 2. The diamonds you get may be blood diamonds, used to support warlords. 3. Diamonds are not forever - they burn more easily than cheaper gemstones. Just get the cheaper gemstones. They look as good. Or gems made from the contaminants in the air (google it) to support the environment. They can start dinner conversations. Don't follow the crowd and buy diamonds just cause everyone else is doing it. Either sell diamonds to stupid people, or boycott the purchase of diamonds.
+hitmarkah I'm relatively sure it was in dollars not yen for the first deal. 150 yen is literally less than 1.5 dollars. If it was 150 dollars it would be around 150,000 yen. Either way he made a huge profit. Then again I think by the 150 stuff the indian guy was just giving examples of percentage cuts.
Well thats because thats how much diamonds are actually worth and then taking them to a place where theres no good quality and a high demand you can sell them for whatever you want
i think ur underestimating the power the main diamond dealers have the fact there is a japanese market at all is only able to exist because these big dealers allow them to do so it would be so easy for them to use translators also th address the issue of language barrier
I love the Snatch movie reference when Dennis Farina's character will drink the shot and he would be on a plane! On another note, Israel controls the market? I thought diamonds come from Antwerp! Damn you Guy Ritchie...!!!

THANK YOIU! The title is so fucking misleading..he said the real title in the end.
Is he toast?
Do people really not realize that he’s trying to take down the corrupt markets by being legit and not some shady business trying to provide to a select few and possibly not even truly valued products by taking the spotlight away from them almost completely...?
i want to see more from him! how about a season just with the diamond trade in japan?
+Steven K. lol, he'd probably not be in the mood to do this sort of stuff all the time
I agree. He's such a character with a lot of wit and charm. Needs to be on TV.

Diamonds ain't worth shit if nobody wants them.
Thats with everything
+Tí mó tàihòu shū. hurrr
+Tí mó tàihòu shū. Luckily, the rich elite constantly wants them so the diamond and gold business is still thriving. Long live Capitalism?

I love how polite he is when talking with the Japanese client.
I could watch this Japanese diamond man for hours... Pity this video wasn't longer:] Good work vice:]

As you can see from this documentary, all businesses are made from a nice meal. Food first, money second.
You forgot the strippers!
Food on strippers?
+Jarred Frost HAHAHAHA Business motto.

Of course you want your client to be full so that they are well and have a good mood and will be positive at giving their money lol

Diamonds are essentially WORTHLESS!
Their as common as sea shells.
If any body bothered to do 5 minutes worth of research they would discover 80% of their value stems from DeBeers monopoly on them and strict market access.

+John Smith Everything is essentially worthless if theres no demand for it.
The only thing diamonds are good for really is their physical properties. Everything else is just silly, it's just a damn clear rock.
John Ferguson Interesting read, got any good links where I can read up more about the subject?
+Sam Fitzpatrick Here's an old article. It's quite long, but really informative.

It's also out of date, no longer supported by Microsoft and still has massive security flaws that can easily be exploited to this very day.
+LoRd DiCKEnZ_122 He may have money but technologically he may be an idiot, or uses some crap software for his business that he can't part with lol

The Snatch reference at 5:08 is awesome
A true hustler, nice video Vice!
Finally something worth watching.
This Vice episode was put together much like a movie. I think there may be enough material to make a movie out of this.
pickpocket 18:18

The woman in black passing it on to the guy?
Good catch.
+McDNF good eye
+McDNF Yeah, and the seller gives the sign to that woman by sipping his tea.
+McDNF Wow, cool to see how it happens!

good one, very interesting.
Why bother buying them then. They are just rocks.
They need to do a follow up with Kyoji in half a year or more. Damnit that was interesting.
Loved the snatch plane scene references
Another freaking awesome guy
yo, vice can you tell me the price of them bracelets ( in dollars ) that were showed to him at the amore factory.
The production value puts all the network TVs to shame. Hats off to you guys.
This Guy was great.....Good attitude.
Nice references to the movie "Snatch" during the travel sequences
Just 1 question here.
How much does a start-up cost
Diamonds are super overrated. 1. Either sell diamonds to stupid people, or boycott the purchase of diamonds.
he's a cool guy
wtf he bought the diamonds for 150 yen and sold them for 5m yen. HUGE PROFIT.
Yes an absurd amount of profit. Fuck diamonds
+Tyler Han $150 is 18,000 yen not 150,000
+hitmarkah when the man said example of 100 I think he was talking like 100k usd
Well thats because thats how much diamonds are actually worth and then taking them to a place where theres no good quality and a high demand you can sell them for whatever you want
keep em comin !
love the Snatch plain ride reference
why is vice making documentaries on diamond syndicates? it's so random. But, I like it.
props to this man for goin out there and makin that money
This guy is a true business man. He will go far, guaranteed
Something exciting about his drive for success.
Now, THIS is a businessman!
Very good video.
Anyone have an update on Funny Boy? Did he change the Japanese diamond market?
nice guy maybe too nice for such a ruthless and monopolised market
whats to stop one of these dealers who's eyes he has opened to the opening in the japan diamond market from taking his idea and blackballing him
+M squared that I think those whole sealers he is buying to won't sell to anyone he is lucky he got in I think
i think ur underestimating the power the main diamond dealers have the fact there is a japanese market at all is only able to exist because these big dealers allow them to do so it would be so easy for them to use translators also th address the issue of language barrier
What kind of conditions are for the workers mining these diamonds?
coolest laid back dude.
this was really interesting
This is why in the Tokugawa cast system the merchants were placed near the bottom
Am I the only one who learned nothing other than the wonder and glory of the establishment "Burlesque." That is my first stop next time I am in Tokyo.
Very interesting story, I'm surprised they let you film in those workshops - I guess its no secret about diamond cutting.
i liked the snatch inspired plane scene at 5:08
That Star wars voice over is fantastic 2.30 in haha
This guy needs his own TV show
You would think someone in his position would be stressed out....NOT THIS GUY!!! He's wild as HELL!!💎
I can't help but like this guy. somebody make a movie about Him.
I'd watch an anime of this guy's business adventures. He seems super cool.
This guys is a true legend
I would like to know how he is doing with his diamond business in Japan.
The title doesn't go with the video? I'm confused (doesn't take much🤗).
hahaha so far this is my favorite Vice documentary ^^
Love the snatch reference.
this was just awesome..
what a great character, self made success story
great vid
I love the Snatch movie reference when Dennis Farina's character will drink the shot and he would be on a plane!
On another note, Israel controls the market? I thought diamonds come from Antwerp! Damn you Guy Ritchie...!!!
