  • The convenience of a computer to do thr thinking for you, means more down time if preventive maintenance isn't done. It's pretty widely known that these little solenoids contribute to alot of seized saws...so if you uave a stihl m-tronic and it starts to run lean or won't idle, this could be the issue.

I sold alot of my stall tronics, adjustable screws dont mess up and if they do a simple carburetor cleaning or replacing fixes it without a shop.

@@davido6915 exactly…saws are something a guy needs to be able to work on in the bush and in camp…IMHO there is no place for a computer on them that only a dealership can read…we are supposed to have the right to maintain and they are violating that. So is Husky…that’s one of the reasons why I went to Echo…good solid parts, great performance with a bit of work, and really good price (except maybe the 7310, it’s over priced now)…but great with some port work, lathe work and a muffler mod…

Thanks for the video. For 70 bucks, why not just switch to a non-mtronic carburetor ?

      There are 2 reasons:
      1) The coil also needs to be switched over, as these ones communicate with the carb, so not just $70, I'd actually purchased a carb for the 261 and tried I'd, but was not getting spark with the stock coil after.
      2) Customer saws and most of them believe these computer controlled saws are the best thing, so I can be tricky to convince them to convert it back to "old technology".
For me personally, I've gotten completely into Echo saws, because they don't use computer carbs, don't use the strato-port and don't use the weaker nylon caged crank bearings. IMHO, Echo are the best built saws out there right now.

@@jimssawsnstuff8903 Yes, agreed. I've been looking into Echo myself. My whole Stihl problem started with a weak solenoid, then it didn't run right, then it wouldn't run at all. I found out that switching the solenoid (To the 'upgrade' ) can also require a coil switch. I just watch Redbull661 switch an MS462 from M-tronic to standard in less than 15 minutes; carb, coil, and flywheel. If the 362 breaks down again, it's getting a new carb, coil, and an new old stock 362 flywheel. I've had it with computerized stuff. Thanks for the info, and reply. Have a great day.

I had a Stihl MS 362 M-tronic lock on high speed when testing it with the MDG-1 yesterday. According to the computer it was supposed to be past the high speed position and checking the idle. I couldn't shut it off with the switch and had to pull the spark plug connection, and even then, it was so hot, it ran for another few seconds just from the heat of the engine (dieseling?). This is a disadvantage of not having a manual choke, I could have shut it off sooner with a choke. Luckily I didn't have a real chain on the saw, or it would have been even more dangerous. This is the first time I've had this happen with a M-tronic saw. Unfortunately Stihl has to conform to EPA regulations with this style of carburation, that's all I can say.

The switches on them are kinda finicky.
As for the epa, Echo doesn’t run computer carbs. I had an Echo 620 pw for most of the summer doing tree removal and that saw was amazing, it puts the Stihl 362 to shame, absolutely eats it for breakfast. It has awesome power and torque, pulled a 24 in bar like it’s 64 or 70cc’s, always starts, didn’t vapour lock, just a dead nuts hard working saw. I’d trade any new husky or Stihl 60cc saw for a 620 any day.

@@jimssawsnstuff8903 Thanks Jim. Thanks for the info on the Echo 620 pw. We are an Echo dealer also and have access to bringing those saws in. I just need to educate people on the reliability of Echos. We've had some homeowner Echo saws, also climbing saws currently, but would like to bring in some pro Echo saws in and try to change some people over. I'm pretty tired of the electronics on Stihl and Husqvarna. thanks for gettin' back to me.

@@fischertoolandgarden I’ve switched over exclusively to Echo for my personal saws. I won’t buy any new saws but them.
I’m so tired of getting husky and Stihl computer / strato-port saws in my shop to fix for other guys. The new husky and Stihls are such a waste of money. They aren’t made to last anymore. The other day I called a couple of husky and Stihl shops for piston rings, hoping they had them in stock…they told me they don’t normally stock them because to do rings is about the same as the price of a new saw! I can’t believe they are that out of it.
Anyhow, didn’t mean to go on a rant… I’ve got a few vids on the Echos.
I find most of them really come alive with a muffler mod, but are respectable stock.
Top handle saws I’d recommend the Echo battery saw I think it’s DCB 2500 (56 volt), the 2511 is nice with a muffler mod and it’s light, the 355T is similar to the 201 T but not quite the performance of stock so muffler mod it.
For rear handle saws the 501 is a great 50 cc saw stock.
      620 is a great 60cc saw stock.
I have 2 of the 7310’s I really like them. Stock they are better than the Husky 372 xtorq, I’ve ported mine and they hang with the stock Stihl 661 in big wood. They will eat a 500i and they are less to buy and have ported than a 500i is stock. Hope that helps 😉

Hey Jim, I picked up a 261C that's got a scored piston - cheap. Buddy I bought it from swears he didn't straight gas it. It's DOM is 2015, it's a low hour, 1 owner saw. I'm thinking the fuel solenoid got it. How do I find the part number for a replacement solenoid for this early version 261?? Thanks.

I’ll post the part number after work tomorrow. Otherwise your Stihl dealer can pull it up if you give them the serial number.
Get the kit with the fuel filter in it too, saves a few bucks. Should be an Orange mesh on it (finer micron)
