    Tip: cracking the gas tank and releasing the air pressure from inside the tank will keep the gas from bubbling out when you disconnect the carburetor from the gas lines.

    That is the CLEANEST saw I have ever seen !
    Back in the 1980s I wrote software for Ford Motor engine controllers, including what was called the feedback carburetor. It looks like the solenoid controlling the fuel mixture is actually controlling the vent to the diaphragm, which of course, does control fuel flow.
    The "33 times a second" is the speed that the processor reads all the inputs, runs the calculation for optimal spark advance and fuel and then send output. At 6000 RPM, the engine has 50 "combustion events" per second, so it is going to take at least 2 events to make an adjustment.
    Oh, and our "black box" was a whole lot bigger ad it did NOT have a diagnostic port !

    • @z7117z
      @z7117z 5 років тому +1

      At 6000 rpm there are 100 fires per second. If it were a 4 stroke you would be correct.

    Just a little tip.. to stop filling your eyes with fuel when you take the pipes off the carb just unscrew the gas cap first for a split second to release any pressure - works a treat.

    I took your advice and picked up the 261 C-M instead of the 361 since I have a 461. That is hands down the nicest saw I have ran. I love my 461 but it's alot of saw when I am cutting up north in the creek and on steep hills I like the lighter more agile saw.

    i wanted to do so on my 193t along with exhaust opening

    • @Human1337
      @Human1337  7 років тому

      There are a couple different styles of limit stops, the two ways I've removed them are simply prying in off with a flathead screwdriver, or threading a wood screw into the top and pulling the stop off. 193T is one of the best saws to do this with, responds well to MM from what I've heard. Just rip off the limit of the high side adjustment screw, and add some fuel on the high side after modding the muffler, will run lean if you don't.

    Yesterday I picked up a new Stihl MSA 120 battery chainsaw w/ battery and charger. It is very low end but does very well with cutting down stands of bamboo and cutting small branches of wood. It sure is much lighter than my MS390 w 25" bar and easier on the back while cutting the bamboo at ground level. Any thoughts on reviewing the Stihl battery line, Human?

    • @stihltech206
      @stihltech206 7 років тому +3

      Chris Dowing, the Stihl M-tronic solenoid is quite robust and very seldomly fails. I am a Stihl Gold Certified Technician and rarely ever see an M-tronic unit in the shop for anything but the common annoyance (stale fuel, broken stuff from rough use, general maintenance)

    • @stihltech206
      @stihltech206 7 років тому +1

      Also, the carb is expensive. about 150-200 depending on the model.

    • @fastrivers812
      @fastrivers812 7 років тому +2

      I totally agree w/ you. I was in the market for a 661 but passed because of the idea of the electronics including research I did where people had some serious issues w/ that model not starting. Likewise I have done work on older cars and newer cars and anything new costs more money in diagnostics and part replacement to fix and I don't want that to become of my saws. E.g., Mass Air Flow sensor, throttle body kit issues, computer controller replacement, etc.

    • @Human1337
      @Human1337  7 років тому

      First run of 661's had an issue with running lean "I think the fuel was puddling from what I heard". As with all new things though, there will be some growing pains. As far as I concerned though, they're all worked out, had nothing but awesome performance out of all the mtronic and autotune saws I've run.

    • @stihltech206
      @stihltech206 7 років тому

      Human, you are absolutely correct about the "growing pains" of the electronic carbs, but like you said they are pretty much over now. The flooding issue you are talking about had to do with the helical spring in the solenoid breaking. With some refinements to the microprocessor and a different fuel filter that is a thing of the past.

    • @stihltech206
      @stihltech206 7 років тому

      Dan Henderson, I dont need to look up a map. Im aware that in other countries they will still continue to sell carbureted models where in the US the models will probably go strictly m-tronic with some time. They still manufacture the lightning/contra in Brazil along with the 090 and some other old models that dont comply with US regulations, but the m-tronic is also available there.

    • @piciu256
      @piciu256 2 роки тому

      I can't really say for longevity, as I'm not a logger, but there are only a couple of people complaining that their mtronic failed (these few are very loud obviously) while many more use the stuff daily and it just works, from what I read the only thing that fails really is the solenoid, it fails rich so no real potential for damage, and is around 20$ to replace.
      Most people don't adjust the carburator every time conditions change, only at the beginning of the day etc., so it runs lean in prolonged cuts and rich when limbing, the processor adjusts on the fly, all the time, for every change in conditions.

    Love your channel but yes you can still get carburetor vs. Mtroniks because they have found and have said they fixed all the Kinks in the mtroniks but they're still some other issues where carburetor actually performs better in certain situations than the mtroniks owe some guys are still sticking with the carburetors I'm still sticking with the carburetors that's what works for me mtroniks great for some but yes you can get carburetor still over the mtroniks have a great day

    If you hate the technology blame the EPA. Don't blame Stihl.

    • @stihltech206
      @stihltech206 7 років тому +6

      Dan Henderson, its not all about the EPA. The cardinal readon for coming up with the m-tronic system was varying qualities of fuel worldwide. The electronically controlled carb adjusts itself depending on altitude or higher concentrations of alcohol.

    • @danhenderson783
      @danhenderson783 7 років тому +3

      Samuel Michelson Masive pressure by the latest tier EPA guidelines would have all but killed the two strokes in America and Europe. A cleaner burning engine saved them temporarily.
      Stihl has very different models based on regions globally. Many models overseas are never sold here due to the EPA.

    • @volvo09
      @volvo09 7 років тому +1

      Samuel Michelson exactly, fuel quality can't be guaranteed and a system like this will make those small adjustments rather than leaving the operator unhappy or creating a warranty claim. I would have no problem buying a saw with tech like this.. Hell I'd buy a fuel injected saw if it was possible to miniaturize the system that much... no one is driving carb'd cars anymore because technology advances (dare I say driven by tightening emissions controls?) proved how outdated and crappy carbs were.

    • @danhenderson783
      @danhenderson783 7 років тому +3

      volvo09 Hmmmm, except most countries don't offer anything mtronic. Carbs are the norm everywhere except countries with strict emission standards.
      Example: South Africa does not offer the MS261. They still sell the MS260.
      Some countries in South America have such saws as the 070, 072, MS382, etc
      Stihl had a vast catalogue of saws that are never seen in North America, none of which are mtronic.

    • @danhenderson783
      @danhenderson783 7 років тому +2

      volvo09 This system adjusts the timing and fuel to air ratio, nothing more. 13.6 to 14.7 to one is The optimal range no matter what gasoline is run. Electronics does nothing to compensate for bad gas. A engine is either lean or rich or it is in the optimal range.
      Bad fuel quality such as low octane fuel still requires the same exact ratio to burn.
      The mtronic is not magical it simply senses the incoming air density/volume and delivers the appropriate amount of fuel.
      The end result is a cleaner running motor and ideally more overall hp.

    Just another thing to fuck, and when it does it's big money to get it fixed. Nah, all through my years of forestry all I ever used was farm/ranch saws and they did just perfect and they still do. Regular carburetors are fine. I'm not your average joe that cuts a few trees a few hours a day and store the saw away for months. Every day, all day every week, every month, every year and I say the farm/ranch saws do just fine for me in comarcial use, and I know a lot of people that I know that are in forestry will say the same thing. You don't necessarily need a "pro" saw for comarcial use.

    Electronic feedback carb systemss are historically the worst of both worlds. They work much less well than EFI (currently impractical for chainsaws) and are a hassle to tune for the real world. The unpleasant transition years for cars were in the 1980s.

      OB that is actually incorrect lockers have been felling trees for years and years and years on carburetors I have a whole line of Stihl carburetor chainsaws they are amazing and have had zero I'm talking zero issues with them big tree small trees that doesn't matter skip chain full chip doesn't matter where I got buddies or I have friends that have had all kinds of issues they are not hard to tune you can talk fuel injection all you want with cars but I certainly miss the days when you could work on your own vehicle in the garage without thousands of dollars of a diagnostic computer or thousands of dollars having a master mechanic work on your car so there is some actual huge benefits to the old school versus the new if you got lots of money to burn go with the new
